HT203176 MacBook Pro will not wake up from sleep

My MacBook Prof laptop will not awaken from sleep sometimes. The laptop could be left open and I walk away for awhile. Come back and it is in the black screen status. When I hit a key to wake it up....it won't. Have to hold the power key down for several seconds to turn it off, then push power key to turn back on. Also, sometimes I close the lid and walk away. Come back several hours later and it will not wake up. Went to the Apple store a few weeks ago. They ran a quick diagnostic on my hardware and said it was all fine. They suggested they wipe clean the hard drive and I start fresh. We did and everything was fine for a few weeks. Now it starting all over again? Very frustrating and time consuming to have to restart your computer multiple times a day.
Any suggestions or thoughts? Could it be a hardware issue? Should I let the Apple store run the 7 hours hardware test?
Thanks.

How recently? I would still give them a call. You may be surprised at the outcome.

  • MacBook Pro will not wake up from sleep

When I left for work, my MBP (2007) was working fine, I put it to sleep).
When I got back from work, I tried to wake it up, and nothing.
I powered it down and tried to reboot. Nothing, not even the chime.
I pulled the battery, and held the start button for 10 seconds.
Tried to reboot with and without the battery; no chime, dark display.
Sounds like my firmware fried, and Applecare expired recently.
    Any suggestions appreciated.

  • Mac Pro will not wake up from sleep mode

    Hi,
In my Energy Saver I have my system set to go to sleep after 15 minutes of not being used.  Unfortuantely, when I try to wake the system up from sleep mode, it freezes on the screen saver and I have to hard restart the computer to get it to turn on again.  I see that this is an issue with MacBook Pros, but I'm not seeing much in the Mac Pro Towers.  I did see a thread about Parallels VM causing causing OSX to not wake up from hibernation mode, but I am not always running my VM Ware when the system decides to not wake up.  Any help/advice is appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Julia

most people also move most of their user folder to another hard drive.
sounds like a more normal Mail + OS issue if just that.
hard restarts = directory corruption so don't reboot w/o first either Recovery Mode, then follow up with Safe Boot.
And maybe you have 3rd party hardware or software that is not compatible with 10.8.2 needs to be considered as well.

  • Mac Pro will not wake up from sleep

After replacing my boot HD with a Solid State Disk, I have had experienced a couple of strange problems.  One, is that Apple Mail will sometimes not quit when commanded to do so, it requires a force quit.  Mail remaining open causes a hang when trying to shut down. Second, when the machine goes to sleep due to inactivity, it often cannot be awakened.  The only way to restore normal operation is to hold the on/off button until the computer shuts down.  I can then restart and all is normal.  I can not confirm that this behavior is related to my SSD boot disk, but it did not happen prior to using the SSD.
I have an early 2008 MacPro, 10 GB RAM, 120 GB SSD, running OS X 10.8.2.

Be sure to try restarting, if you have not done so since this problem occurred.  You should also power off the printer while you do the restart...
If that does not help, you can try resetting the printing system.  Open System Preferences Print & Scan (or Print & Fax) pane.  In the sidebar with list of printers, right (control) click anywhere.  Select Reset printing system.  You will have to add back your printers after you do this.

Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. The purpose of this test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • My iMac will not wake up from sleep after upgrading to OS X Mavericks

After upgrading to OS X, my iMac will not wake up from sleep.  Each time I have to do a hard restart.  Is there a fix for this problem?

    Hi,
I have just had the same problem with my iMac and after upgrading to Mavericks my iMac would not wake without pressing the power off button and re-booting.
Anyway, I have since done a complete new install on my iMac and have gone 5 days without an issue with the iMac not waking.  It was a bit of a pain to do but my own view so far is that the problem is linked to the upgrading of the OS instead of a clean install.
My iMac now flies with a new OS installed instead of an upgrade.

  • Maverick will not wake up from sleep

Maverick will not wake up from sleep. i dont see any related issues. maybe i am the only one? Ive been trying to run maverick for the last 2 months. I thought everything was fine after I erased, reformated and partitioned the HD and installed Maverick on a clean drive......  and then i get the ? startup disk. And then when it does run, I cant let it go to sleep. It will not wake up from sleep. I get the spinning beach ball of death everytime. I leave my computer on and run to the grocery store and come back........ I have to shut my computer off from the control strip and push the start button, every time.
Anyone know if this will damage my computer??
I have selected the HD in the preferences startup; I've unplugged it for several minutes; started up in S mode; zapped the P ram; ran permissions; you name it. im at a loss.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Should i buy another Mac? I cant afford one in this economy.

I suggest you use the Recovery Partition Disk Utility to check the hard disk and then re-install the OS from there.

  • MBP will not wake up from Sleep

    Hi,
I installed Leopard successfully on Friday, and since then, my computer does not wake up from sleep about 50% of the time.
When I open the lid to attempt to wake it up, I hear the normal CD drive clicking sound (not the best way to describe the sound, but I don't know how else haha), but the screen just remains black. I cannot tell however, if it is a) waking up and the screen is remaining black or b) not waking up at all. The only way to remedy this is to hard to a hard shut down with the power button and then to power back on.
Anybody else experience this or know what could be causing this? I never had this problem with Tiger in the 5 months that I had it on my MBP.
    Thanks for the help!

Just installed Leopard on my original 15" MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo. Last night, I had several applications open (Safari, Transmit, Timbuktu Pro) set up in separate Spaces. I closed the lid to put the machine to sleep. The sleep light was pulsing normally.
This morning, when I opened the MBP, the screen came on ok showing the last Safari page I was on and the Airport Indicator showed that it re-connected to my wifi as normal. However, the cursor was scrambled (the was a vague set of dots but no arrow where the cursor should be). This "scrambled cursor" moved around the screen when I moved my finger on the trackpad but the computer did not respond to any mouse clicks or keyboard input. I tried commandoptionQ to force quit but no luck. Eventually I had to press & hold the power button to force a restart & the computer then started up normally.

  • IMac G5 iSight will not wake up from sleep

This has been happening to me for some time.
Occasionally my Mac do not wakes up from sleep. Instead it hangs!
    Here how it goes:
I press a key on keyboard; my Mac wakes up, but screen remains black with only mouse pointer. I cannot see login window.
And Mac stays this way for hours. No matter if I press a key, click a mouse.
The only remedy is to press power button and to shut it down.
Then I have checked console.log. Nothing spectacular. Here is log from last accident:

Wait - before you take it in for repair or get put on hold with Support try this:
Go to System Prefs, Energy Saver, then set your display sleep and computer sleep times the same. Check both check boxes too.
Trust me, I've been working on this problem with Apple and checking the discussion boards for over a year now. I've had my logic board replaced, power supply replaced, been through about 8 Apple techs and tried just about anything you'll read on these boards or get told to do by a tech. If you notice about every 4th or 5th page has someone posting about this problem. The above suggestion is the most recent thing I tried (from reading posts here in this forum, not from an Apple Tech) and it has come out of sleep for the past 30+ tries without a problem. This is not to say this is IT(the final sovle), because it has been known to go on a good run for a week or so and then come up again. This 'fix' however, has been the most promising. If it continues to work, I will let Apple know and hopefully they can fix the bug. They have all sorts of case history with me on this problem.

You can Try resetting NVRAM/PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

if that does not sort it I would reinstall OS X

  • MacBook Pro will not wake from sleep

My new 13" MacBook Pro will occasionally refuse to wake from sleep. Touching the keyboard or moving the mouse will turn on the keyboard background lights but the computer will not wake. This occurs without any peripherals attached.  I have reset the PRAM and the SMC ... no help.
The only option for recovery is the hard power down with the power button and restart. Anyone else seeing this?

Yes and I hate it. I am having pretty much the same problem, and have tried the same solutions, also Iupgraded to Lion and there still has been no relief. My computer just runs slower.

  • MacBook Pro will not wake up under Windows 7

Note: I've just installed Boot Camp 3.1 and the problem persists.
The first time I put the computer to sleep (by closing the lid) under Windows 7 x64, it will sleep and wake no problem. The sleep indicator will flash. If I try to put it to sleep a second time at a later time, the sleep indicator will not flash and instead stay bright. By opening the lid, the light goes off, but the computer will not wake, forcing me to hard reset.

I have had this problem since I got my late 2008 Unibody Macbook Pro. I have posted the problem here many, many times and never have gotten a solution. I have escalated this to Apple support too many times to recall and I keep getting told that this is a Windows fault and only happening to me. Despite me pointing them to these support forums showing many people having this issue. Apple refuse to admit anything is wrong. I eventually got my money back after taking the case to consumer affairs. Joyous.
    Hope you have better luck!
