HT203254 Macbook pro 8600 fails to start

I have a macbook pro with the 8600m gt graphics chip.  I has recently failed and now will not start, no chime just disk spinning and steady white glow from the sleep indicator.
Is this product still covered under the extended waranty programme?  If it is, will apple cover the machine even though it won't start up?
Any thoughts or insights greatly welcome before travelling significant distance to Apple Store.

Thanks for the info, I bought the machine from ebay so don't know exactly when it was first sold.  None of the additional points worked, the machine only powers the DVD drive, starts the fans (slowly) and partially lights the sleep indicator.  I have read on 'net that Apple service desks need the machine to start so that they can run their diagnostics to determin whether the fault lies with the 8600M graphics chip.  'net would indicate that I have the most extreme failure case.
Do you know if this is the case - I'm trying to determin if it's worth a 6hr round trip drive to try and get it fixed or whether to cut my loses?
Again, thanks for your thoughts.

jamiesfromportland, greetings:  I do not take issue with your very valid reasons for purchasing RAM from Apple.  However by recommending not to purchase RAM from third party vendors I would suggest is unfounded advice.  Most of the problems that occur with third party RAM are attributable to the lack of adherence to the required specifications, viz. this post.
I would be willing to wager that purchasing RAM from reputable vendors such as OWC or Crucial one would find similar fail/success ratios as those purchased from Apple.  In both cases this assumes that the specifications are adhered to.
I have always purchased RAM upgrades from third party vendors with no performance issues.  True that I do so to save money but I do not skimp on quality.
    Ciao.

The logic board on my MacBook Pro has failed. How do I retrieve all my data from the hard drive?

Remove the drive and put it in an external enclosure. Backup the drive completely. Repartition and format the drive. Replace the drive into the computer. Take the computer in for the logicboard replacement.

  • Data transfer from 08 macbook pro that won't start up to new macbook pro?

i have a 2008 macbook pro which won't start up properly, although, it will will start up with the Ctrl+T command which to my knowledge allows it to become like an external hard drive.
my question is, which cable will i need to transfer data to my newer macbook pro that only has thunderbolt connections, and what are the limitations to the files i can move over? basically i need all my document files, iTunes files, and garage band files...

    1. You need a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter.
    2. All of your personal files can be moved over.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

MY macbook pro is slow to start up after log in. any suggestions on where to start addressing the problem?

Delete any items in System Preferences > Users & Groups (or Accounts) > Login Items
Same for  HD > Library > StartupItems
Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Deskop.
Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available.
Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.

  • MacBook Pro Speakers have a 'start' click. How can I disable it?

    Hello all,
It seems that my MacBook Pro Speakers make a 'start' noise, when they have to 'play' a sound from absolute silence. Why is that? This has become extremely annoying, especially when I get notifications from Adium every now and then. Any workaround on this?
    Thank you in advance.

It is quit possible that one of your speakers has become defective. A had a similar issue with my previous MB, brought it to the Apple Store and the genius determined that i need to replace one of my speakers and sub.
If you are still covered, i would advise you to get it checked out.

  • I have MacBook Pro and whenever I start Aperature 3 it stays on for about 5 minutes then it shuts down with an error of shutting down unexpected... anything??

Hello, I have MacBook Pro and whenever I start Aperature 3 it stays on for about 5 minutes then it shuts down with an error of shutting down unexpected... anything??
Also does anyone know how to take something from one picture and add it to another in aperature?
    Thank you!!!

I had the exact same problem. Here is what an Apple Support person told me to do - and it worked like a charm!
Go to your APPLICATIONS Folder. Find a folder within that folder called TOOLBARS. Remove the ENTIRE folder. Once you remove that folder, your Aperture should work perfectly.
There is something in that folder that you don't need that messes with Aperture. Try it. Mine worked perfectly!

  • Failed attempt to restart after updates, MacBook Pro now frozen on start up.

Hi, please forgive my ignorant description, I am useless outside of emails and documents.
This morning I clicked yes to update my MacBook Pro. I think it was on mountain lion and had an upgrade bundle. During the restart the charger plug was dislodged for a few seconds. It came up with an error message (along the lines of "not all updates successful" and prompted for a restart. I restarted and after the start up sound I am frozen on a white screen that says -
panic (CPU 0 caller 0 xffffff8028e59241): "Unable to find driver for this platform:\"ApCI\".\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-2050.20.9/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExp ert.cpp:1548
Further down it says Mac OS version not yet set.
I tried turning it off and on again and ended up back at the same screen message. Also tried control option escape and nothing happens. I live in regional SE QLD, nearest Apple store is in Brisbane. Is there anything I can do or do I have to wait till I can get it to a professional?
    Thanks.

Boot into your Recovery partition (if you can) by holding down the command and R keys whilst booting. Once there elect to resinatll the OS (you may need your Apple ID and password for this). You'll not erase any data, etc., by installing a fresh OS.
Once your OS install is complete, you can restart and go through the update process again, this time remembering not to unplug from mains while the updates are installing.

  • MacBook Pro Mid 2012 not starting up after Yosemite Update

I'm using a MacBook Pro mid 2012 model , enrolled into Yosemite Public Beta Program ...
After the official public launch , app store suggested that i rather update from beta 5 to beta 6 , as downloading extra 5 gig of OS data seemed unnecessary for me , I just updated from the app store.
Post the update , after shutting down my MacBook , I tried starting it up after 8 hours , it failed to respond to any of my prompts .
    Keyboard not responding
    Power Button not responding
Li-Po Battery indicator alone works ,
When plugged MagSafe , it indicates charging .
The Sleep Indicator (in the front - that of hard disk drive ) blinks occasionally.
Later, when i tried powering up with MagSafe , It booted luckily , after some 20 hours of work , i shut the system down ,
Again when i tried booting up  , it failed .
The problem persists since 3 days.
I tried booting up in Safe Mode - No result
Tried Verbose Booting up - No result
Cleared NV RAM - No result
Cleared SMC as Apple instructed for Intel Based MacBooks - No result.
Removed Battery and kept aside for a while , After an hour tried powering up , It booted up , Went till Apple Logo , The loading bar was some 45%
Then it started to go down with a black screen ,
    It never starts up again.
After regular intervals of removing and installing battery , it starts up to white screen and goes off.
I am really worried and desperate now.
I am not sure whether my HDD is dead or my Battery is dead  or my Logic board is dead or my Yosemite Install was not right ?
After hours of online research , nothing seems to be helpful .
People at Apple Care (Premium ReSeller , India) are so irresponsible in attending the issue ,
They say its helpless without even doing some basic troubleshoot.
Where would it have went wrong and What am i supposed to do now ?
    PLEASE HELP !!

    darkrider92,
I have the same model MacBook Pro as the one that you got from your mom. Were you able to install the 10.6.8 update successfully onto the factory drive? Were you using the factory RAM when you tried to install the 10.6.8 update on the SSD?
Have you checked  the Web site of the SSD’s manufacturer, to see if there’s a firmware update available for the SSD?
You can download the 10.6.8 update outside of Software Update from Apple here; in case you need to try to install this update several times, running it from your local disk would be more convenient than waiting for it to download again.

  • MacBook Pro (15", Late 2011) Start-up troubles

I'm having start-up issues with my MacBook Pro. Yesterday night it was working fine and I had no problems at all. I left it to go to sleep as usual, and this morning when I tried to start it up the screen started showing jittering grey pixels and seemed shifted to one side.
After that it shut down and when I tried to restart it I couldn't get past the grey screen after the apple logo and spinning indicator came on. It just stays on the grey screen and after a couple of seconds shuts down again. I ran a hardware diagnostic test and no problems came up. Also, when I try to boot up in safe mode I get the progress bar at the bottom of the grey screen, but after that a blue screen with vertical black lines appears and I have to shut down and restart again. The same happens if I try the recovery option (command-r). I can boot in single-user mode with no problems. Can anyone help me figure out what's going on?

You may have experienced a hardware failure of some kind. Give this a try:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless.
If this is not possible then you will need to do this:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

I just downloaded the new Yosemite on my 15" Macbook Pro and it failed, will not turn back on. I got a loud beeping noise from it. It will not do anything. I am on the phone with Apple right now and they made an appointment for me to take my Macbook to the Apple store tomorrow.

Diana, did you try starting in safe mode (hold down the SHIFT key and turn on the Mac) and do you have an installation on an external drive or even an empty external drive?
