HT204032 Power Nap on Mountain Lion

I use Macbook 13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008 and osx Mountain Lion. Can I use Power nap?

Power Nap wakes the computer every hour to do specific things and then puts it back to sleep.  Any computer that is booted off a HDD will spin the drive up for a few seconds and then spin it down again.  While this doesn't consume a lot of power, it makes annoying sounds and tends to add wear to the disk drive.
Hence, Power Nap is restricted to computers WITHOUT hard disk drives, even if it is one where the HDD has been changed out to an SSD.

  • MBP Pro 2011 with SSD ... No Power-Nap on Mountain Lion?

    Hi,
I have bought my MBP last summer with an 256GB SSD. But after installing Mountain Lion I don't find the Power-Nap feature? Will this be available for my MBP in the future?

it is because those computer have special built in batteries that Apple designed for efficiency. Those can probably know when to receive emails and when to sleep while the other ones might require a different switch.
Or it's just that apple wants you to get new hardware to have the new feature
In either case, your computer is not supported for this feature.

I have a new MacBook pro (mid 2012) with upgraded SSD drive, is there any way of getting power nap functionality now or in forthcoming firmware updates? I assumed power nap was standard to all devices running mountain lion.

  • HT204032 Power Nap Compatibility.

In the article about Power Nap it says that the Macbooks that are compatible are the Macbook Airs after 2011 and the Macbook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012). Does this mean the retina display ones AND mid 2012 edition or just macbook pro with retina in mid 2012? I have the New Macbook pro bought in July 2012, when I upgrade to Mountain Lion, will I be compatible to use Power Nap?

    Thanks,
    Harsh

I believe it is limited to the Retina versions, as they use SSD Flash storage - unlike the other MBP models.

  • HT204032 Power NAP and Time Machine Backup

One of the features of Power Nap is to allow backup even when the notebook is in a sleep .
i notcied that even when Power Nap is enabled , i loose the backup process immediatly if PC goes to sleep. the condition happens when the backup is already working and after some time when not using the PC it goes to Sleep .
is there a solution for the same ?

Same here. Doesn't seem to work as advertised? Neither does it continue a backup when going into a "power nap"
The info isn't clear, but TM has always cancelled a backup when going to sleep.
nor does it start a new backup during a "power nap".
It should, but only if the previous one was more than an hour earlier.

  • OSX Mountain LIon - Power Nap functionality MBP 13' with SSD

    Hi there,
I own an early 2011 13' MBP with a preconfigured 256 Gb SSD. since OSX Mountain Lion will be released next July, I was wondering if the new Power Nap functionality will be supported on my MacBook (on the website it states you need flash storage installed)?
    With kind regards,

The documentation seems to vary somewhat.  On the tech spec page it says this:

  • Mountain Lion - Power Nap Question!

I understand the new ' Power Nap' application in Mountain Lion lets you download all the mails and other updates even Mac is in sleep mode.
Do I have to be connected to Internet for automatic downloads? They say Mac adapter only needs to be connected but do I need to be online to receive automatic updates?
    Sanket.

You would always need to have an internet connection, and be connected to it, to recieve software updates. That is where the updates come from, IE the internet. So without one where do you think it would get the updates from, Thin air?

  • Mountain Lion on iMac with no SSD - why is Power Nap forcing my computer to sleep?

I have an iMac purchased in mid-2011.  It has no SSD.  So why is it going to sleep when tasks are still running?  If I'm encoding a video in HandBrake, downloading files in Firefox or Chrome, etc...the computer goes to sleep, despite the fact that it's still doing something.  Why is this?  If my iMac is not Power Nap capable, shouldn't it use the old method for determining whether or not to go to sleep?  Why can't we choose between Power Nap and previously functioning sleep behavior?

    Maybe this will help: http://forum.serviio.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=7791
I am unclear on how that will help.  It is a link to a post from a user on a non-Apple website whose first and only post is about how this problem exists.  And I assume if you're referring to the Apple Discussion thread that other post links to, you would have just posted that link instead.
If you intended to link to that other Apple Discussion thread, from that discussion thread, Apple told one user, "Apps need to use power assertions while engaged on activities that should not be interrupted and we are working to evangelize this." meaning that Apple realizes they haven't done a good job of letting developers know of this; and that was from October 18, 2012, nearly 3 months after Mountain Lion's release date and I believe nearly 8 months after the first developer preview.  So by Apple's own admission they haven't done a good job regarding this issue.
However, that does explain why Mountain Lion is behaving the way it did.  Both Apple and developers dropped the ball on this given that major apps (Firefox, Chrome, etc...) still don't implement Apple's new method of power saving.
