  • High CPU Usage when charging Macbook Pro 2011 13"

    Hey,
Over the last week or so I noticed that when my Macbook Pro (Late 2011 13") was switched on and charging the CPU usage shoots up to ~90% with the fan operating at roughly 6.2k RPM. I have had the laptop a year come the end of the month and mainly use it for word processing, coding and general web browsing.
I updated OS X to 10.8.3 this morning and the problem still exists. If I remove my charger the problem goes away.
I've tried resetting the SMC but I don't know if it worked.
Has anyone else had this issue and been able to rectify it?
There is no Apple store in my home town and I'm praying there is something I can do rather than drive 20 miles or so to the nearest store.
If it is of any benefit, it is the stock build in terms of RAM and HDD (haven't got round to ordering an SSD yet ).
    Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.3
    Boot ROM Version:          MBP81.0047.B27
    SMC Version (system):          1.68f99
    Thank you

    Hi Fernando,
I came across a Google search result which was from a forum belonging to a folding application I had previously installed, I cannot recall the name of it.
When I checked Activity Monitor application I could see that there was a process belonging to the folding@home application. Even though I had removed the application it still left a file behind which was continually being used (somehow).
Hope this helps. You may not have had this application in particular, but I guess there could be similar behaviours with other applications?
    Kind regards
    Jamie

  • Macbook Pro 2011 will not book Mavericks from SSD (I have tried E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G.)

I have a late 2011 15" i7 MBP with 10GB of RAM (8GB + 2GB) running Mavericks 10.9.1 that I want to install an internal SSD on and run just the OS and all of my apps off of, while keeping my Home folder with all of my media on the orignal HDD. I researched online for OS X compatible and recommended SSDs and baught a Kingston 120GB SSD (http://www.kingston.com/us/ssd/v#sv300s3). I also researched and found the most recomended way to do so was with an MCE Optibay (http://store.mcetech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=OBSxGB- UNB&Category_Code=STORHDOPTIBAY&Product_Count=3). I baught and installed them with no problem. I took out the super drive and replaced it with the Optibay which I placed the original 500GB HDD in, then I installed the SSD into the main hard drive slot. I manually booted the Macbook (holding "option") from the HDD. Using Disk Utility I then erased the entire (brand new, already empty) SSD in the -Mac OS Extended (Journaled)- format and Partitioned it as a single drive with the -GUID Partition Table- scheme and the -Mac OS Extended (Journaled)- format. I then used the recomended program "Carbon Copy Cloner" and cloned my HDD to my SSD. When it finished with no problems I changed the Startup Disk in System Preferences to the SSD and restarted. When the Macbook booted it made the loud Apple "dunnnnn" as it always does, then instead of the Apple logo appearing a gay circle with a diagonal line through it appeared (like on a "no smoking" sign), I later found this error to backed the "Apple prohibation sign". After showing this error for about 20 seconds, the Apple logo appeared as normal, and after about 30 seconds my log-in screen showed up and I was able to log in. The only thing I can imagine happened is that it couln't read the OS from the SSD so it defaulted over to the HDD and booted from there. After this happened I researched online for suggestions and fixes to this problem and tried EVERY single one that I found.
Below is a list of every trouble shooting option I did (that I can rememember right now) and none of them worked (making sure to wipe the SSD properly between new attempts):
--Use CCC to clone everything on HDD except Home Folder to SSD
--Use CCC to clone entire HDD to SSD
--Use Disk Utility to clone everything on HDD except Home Folder to SSD
--Use Disk Utility to clone entire HDD to SSD
--Clone HDD to SSD with CCC, then remove HDD from Macbook, forcing it to boot only from SSD
--Download a clean copy of Mavericks from the App Store and directly install it to the SSD then manually boot from the SSD
--Download a clean copy of Mavericks from the App Store and install to a USB thumb drive via DiskMaker X app (http://liondiskmaker.com/), boot manually to the USB OS X installer, then install the OS to SSD via startup
--Download a clean copy of Mountain Lion from the App Store and install it to a USB thumb drivevia DiskMaker X app (http://liondiskmaker.com/), boot manually to the USB OS X installer, then install the OS to SSD via startup
--Put the HDD in its original place and put the SSD in the Optibay (this lead to more problems)
///--As I was cloning the HDD to the SSD with CCC it got to my one of my apps, "Audacity", and said that one of the files had a problem and couldn't clone it, so I just deleted the app entirely.
///--I went to reformat and partition the SDD again because CCC cloned about 5GB from the HDD to the SSD, and as I was erasing the SSD it said "failed to umnount disk". Then I tried to just partition it and got the same error. So I placed the SSD back into the main drive slot and put the HDD back into the Optibay. I booted from the HDD, went back into Disk Utility and was able to format and partition the SDD.
Every single time I tried to boot from the SSD after trying every fix and trouble shoot I would get the "Apple Prohibation" sign. Between yesterday and today I have spent upwards of 20 hours reading about solutions to this via blogs, forums, and websites, doing these trouble shooting techniques, and talking on the phone with Apple tech support, Apple store technitians, and Apple registered local computer store employees.
I also read that the SATA cable or SSD is sometimes faulty and turns out to be the cause in this issue, but there is no way of actually checking for that, and I am able to read and write to the SSD and HDD which are both connected via the SATA cable, so I don't think it's the SATA cable or the SSD.
Please if anyone has any other suggestions that I have not mentioned or was able to do an internal SSD install and clone their HDD to it with no problems at all afterwords, tell me how!!!

You did everything 'right' and yet in most cases such as you present, it turns out to be a bad SATA cable 99% of the time.
I, too, have a Late 2011 15" model and never had a problem with my SATA cable and my SSD. Most people don't. But then there are those few who do.
You can likely find a 'warrantied' cable on www.ifixit.com - however, I've never heard of anyone having problems with the much less expensive options on eBay!

  • When does MacBook Pro 2013 Retina arrives Mumbai

I'm a student in international school in Mumbai and decided to get the first MacBook in my life because all student in my grade got two choices; Bring a new laptop or extend the warrent. Mine is still good but many of my friends already have MacBook(s) so I would like to have a new one. However, all stores in Mumbai say it will come at March or April. But, who believe that? To a person who has to make it before April 15, waiting is a big deal.
So, my question is when it would be. Hope anybody to give me answer, based on the launched datas that happened before this Macbook..

  • MacBook Pro won't close have to use power button

My Mac won't turn off. Desk top is blank with mouse cursor showing. Will only quit using the power button.
I have run the FSCK as David Pogue suggests, ran Disk Utilities from the Install disk but no change.
Anyone have any similar problems or better yet a fix?
    Jerry

This is usually caused by a process that is hung so the system cannot shut down. Very difficult to determine what may be the cause as almost anything could be at the root of the problem, and you cannot monitor what is happening after you select Shut Down.
If the computer goes to sleep without the same problem, then it's not likely due to programs you have running, although that is still possible. A running program may have corrupted cache files preventing it from properly quitting.
You could start by installing the freeware utility called AppleJack - VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Read the documentation carefully to learn how to use it as it requires booting into single-user mode and running it from the command line. It's pretty easy to use as it will run automatically.
I would also suggest the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If these don't resolve the problem then you may have corrupted system files that are preventing proper shut down. In this case you will need to reinstall OS X:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Unusual shutoff on Macbook Pro 2011 while sleeping

My 13" Macbook Pro 2011 will be fully charged and will go to sleep normally.  However, I will go about my day and 4 hours later I won't be able to turn my computer on unless I have it connected to the power adapter.  Then when I turn on my computer, the battery life percentage is 0%.  Why is this?
Isn't the battery supposed to last at least a day or so while in sleep mode?

Your hard drive will last a while longer if you keep the moving to the minimum when it is on, but on short term there aren't any problems. I have never even tried not to move my MacBook when the drive's spinning, and it still works fine after 2 years.
Of course, if you would have an SSD, move the thing as much as you want. Since they don't move on themselves, they can be moved freely.

  • Display issue - My macbook pro 2011 detects my display but does not display an image

Hi, I am having a problem connecting my MacBook Pro (2011) to my HP 2511x display.  I used the display all morning with my mbp connected and closed.  When I came back, after the computer went to sleep, I cannot get any image on the display.  The computer detects the display but no image appears.
    I have tried-
Installing the latest firmware and software updates
restarting both the computer and monitor
trying all of the possible display arrangements and settings for resolution and refresh rates
Also I am connected using a minidisplay to DVI adaptor in the thunderbolt port.
    Any and all suggestions appreciated.
    thanks.

    Hello Aminetti,
It sounds like your computer goes to sleep, and will not wake up, so you must manually restart your computer. I recommend the troubleshooting in the following article:
OS X: When your Mac doesn't sleep or wake
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5357
    Reset SMC
    Reset NVRAM/PRAM
    Test with external devices disconnected
    Try Safe Mode
    Try another user account
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • Macbook Pro (2011 Model) suddenly does not boot from SSD in main bay

I have been using Macbook pro 2011 and Samsung SSD (256GB) for about a year.
All of sudden, the computer will not from SSD from the main bay, but it will boot from the optical bay.
I have tried an Intel SSD 120gb which came with the computer, but it does not work either.
However, it will boot from the regualr hard drive from the main bay.
I have read somewhere that it could be due to the hard drive flex cable.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

It may very well be a problem with the SATA cable... for some reason (and I don't know why, but...) SSDs seem more prone in 'detecting' a faulty SATA cable than a standard hard drive. Where a hard drive will boot, an SSD will not.
I would advise purchasing a new SATA cable - from ifixit.com or powerbookmedic.com - and replacing the cable. That (normally) clears up the problem.

  • Does macbook pro of early 2011, macbook 17'' possess 3D vision and gaming ability?

Does macbook pro of early 2011, macbook 17'' possess 3D vision and gaming ability?

No 3D vision, but the top end 2.2+ 15" & 17" supports a pretty decent video card for 3D gaming, for a laptop, scores 30 on Cinebench. WOW will play on highest settings 50fps and better.
But still a Windows tower smokes anything Apple has and you can replace the video cards, so if your serious, you should go there or get a Playstation, better bang for the buck.

fter recent update to my macbook pro itunes will not open, it just bounces when I click on it

Means they are going to mess up your iPhoto Library pictures database  so it's unreadable by older versions of iPhoto on older OS X operating systems.
You have the choice to right click on the iPhoto Lbrary and inside is a folder called Origianls, use the Finder to Duplicate this folder, then move the OriginalsCopy out of the iPhoto Library folder and save it elsewhere.
I dont' think Apple will every intentionally touch the originals, however it's possible they could.
