Good morning
I know my .me and .mac e-mails are no longer retrieving mail because I'm still on Leopard. Upgrading to Lion would be too onerous as certain things will not work. My question is is it possible to see what e-mails I got before deleting the addresses from my mail preferences (I thought I could still use just the e-mail)?
I can't set up and use icloud so I take it I can't forward e-mails to gmail either?

You can use your email on Leopard, though nothing else.
Firstly, if you haven't done so you must go to http://me.com and click the link to migrate to iCloud. There are two options: it doesn't really make any difference which you choose; and you need to do this as a matter of urgency since the facility may be withdrawn at any time.
That done, in theory you should be able to access your email in Mail at the same server settings, but this hasn't worked for everyone: you can set Mail up manually to access your iCloud email:

Once migrated, your mail will also be available at http://icloud.com

If the old ID is an earlier version of your current ID, temporarily recreate the old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change. Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address. You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll. Other possibility is setting up virtual machine with Snow Leopard server software on new computer.
Any opinions on what would allow moving forward with the least hassle and best workflow continuity?

That is not true.
Mountain Lion does not have Rosetta so it is not capable of executing PowerPC code. If you have MS Office 2004 that is coded in PowerPC code and will not run in Mountain Lion. What you need to do is upgrade to an Intel version of Office.

I believe I can use I tunes. I know how to sync my address book into the IPad but can't remember how to delete the ones that are there.

If you are syncing your iPad with your computer, one way to delete all your contacts might be to connect the iPad to the computer, then in iTunes select the iPad in the sidebar. Once you've done that, go to the Info tab. Uncheck the box for syncing Contacts, then in the lower right, hit Apply. All the Contacts on your iPad will be gone.
You haven't asked for solutions to use Snow Leopard with iCloud, but there are some solutions for Mail, Address Book and Calendar.

Should you upgrade is your decision. If you don't need the advanced features of Mavericks, then there is no reason to upgrade. If you don't use applications that require Mavericks to upgrade, then you don't need to upgrade.
Note that beyond Snow Leopard you won't be able to run PPC-only applications such as Office 2004.

I just got and iPad and want to use iCloud on my MacBook, which is running Leopard 10.5.8. I'd rather not upgrade to Lion due to issues I've been reading about. Does anyone know if/how I can use iCloud while running this system OS?

There is no Mobile Me anymore. It has been gone for several years, now. However, your existing calendar and mail will integrate with iCloud if you enable it on your system.

It's evident that you are using Snow Leopard or earlier (or very early Lion) since you have the now obsolete MobileMe preference pane.
The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.5 (Mountain Lion preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is non non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
To make use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mavericks, provided it meets the requirements.
The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of memory
OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
7GB of available space
Lion is available in the Online Apple Store ($19.99). Mountain Lion (10.8.x) is also available there at the same price but there seems little point as the system requirements are the same for Mavericks (10.9.x) - which is free - unless you need to run specific software which will run on Mountain Lion only.

Why won't my iMac (Snow Leopard) iCal sync with both iCloud and iPhone?

No matter how many times I enter all the correct info neither iCloud or iPhone will pick up my entries on my iMac.
Also, there is no iCloud ikon in my preferences for waht that's worth.

Once you enable iCloud, your iPhone will no longer sync properly (or at all) with iCal UNLESS you upgrade to OSX Lion. I tried various techniques yesterday for about an hour to see if I could get all three on the same page, but I could never get it to work. Items would appear in one or two place, but never all three. iCal won't sync at all to iCloud without Lion. This is not a secret: Apple states in its promotional materials that you need Lion to use iCloud on your Mac.
I posted this to another similar question last night, but it needs to be repeated:
This is the kind of thing that I hate, hate, hate about Apple.
Why is it that if I bought a Mac before July of this year, I must pay to upgrade my operating system in order to take advantage of iCloud? Meanwhile, a Windows Vista SP2 user, who bought a new computer in May 2009, already has everything they need on their computer to use iCloud.
Why was it possible for Apple to write a free iCloud Control Panel that was compatible with existing versions of Windows, but Mac users must buy an entirely new operating system?
It's not the price that bothers me – I've already paid for it. But Lion was such a buggy mess and the interface "improvements" so useless that I "downgraded" back to SL. Now I find that I must choose between a terrible operating system and the features in iCloud.
If Apple gave Mac users the same amount of backwards compatibility that it gives to Windows users, people with OSX 10.5 (Leopard) would be able to use iCloud. That's something to think about the next time you go to purchase a new computer.
(P.S. Something else to think about: If you bought a Mac before October 2007 (when OSX 10.5 was introduced), your computer won't run iTunes 10.5 unless you buy an upgrade. But a PC user, who purchased their computer as long ago as Sept. 2004(!), can run iTunes without an OS upgrade.)

iCloud requires OS X 10.7.2 or later, so you have to upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion or Lion.
First, see if your Mac is supported > http://www.apple.com/osx/specs If it's supported, open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion. While Mountain Lion is downloading, you can make a backup of your data.
When the download finishes, the installer will show up, so follow the steps to upgrade Mac OS X. After upgrading, you will be able to log in iCloud in System Preferences > iCloud.

hi i have had problems with my icloud since i started as i couldnt get my email address and my apple id just to be the same from get go i started off with a mobile me account and now it has changed over to icloud completly i dont no how to change any of my details i am getting married soon so want to change my email address and it would be so much better if i could have the same email for my itunes and everything else any one no how to resolve this

Your ex-MobileMe address is (in both @me.com and @icloud.com versions) your Apple ID and your login. You cannot change this. However you can add up to three 'email aliases' - these are additional addresses (not accounts) which deliver into the same inbox as the main account. (In fact it's a good idea to give out alias addresses, rather than the main address, because if they attract spam you can easily change them.) (New aliases can only be @icloud.com ones; @me.com addresses cannot now be created.)
You should be aware before you start that once you've created an alias you cannot turn that address into a full iCloud account, move it to another account, or reactivate it if you delete it.

The only alternative is to create a completely new Apple ID (for which you will need a non-Apple email address to become the ID) and open a new iCloud account with that by signing in in System Preferences (or Settings)>iCloud and choosing a new @icloud.com address.
If you do this you can continue to use the old login for iTunes. Or you could change the login to the new ID but you can't transfer purchases from one iTunes account to another.
