It's not uncommon for it to not work the first time and sometimes, you have to try it a few times. Turn off your antivirus software and your firewall while you are trying to restore the iPad. Enable them again after you restore.
If that still won't work, post back with detailed information as to what exactly does happen as you go through the process.

yes you are correct in your statement but i was curious to see if that interpretation was correct so i called....after about 15 minutes a supervisor came on the phone and said the update is not available for the original iPhone because it is only for the 4.0 software which is not compatible with the original iPhone...and i may not have actually known what was going on but i did realize that i could not make phone calls at certain times even though I had 1 or 2 bars....now i realize this was because of the "incorrect signal strength formula" that has been present since the launch in the original iPhone as you stated....just becuase i could not pinpoint the problem (becuase i am not an engineer) does not mean i used the phone flawlessly with no problems...now that i now what the cause of the problem is i can identify it every time it happens...i used to just think that maybe the call was dropped but in fact i never had any service to begin with because the phone incorrectly displayed that i had service when i did not

If you bought a used iPhone and it is asking for the previous owners Apple ID and password, that iPhone is unusable. That is the Activation Lock, an anti-theft protection system that cannot be bypassed, not even Apple can touch that. Email won't set up - keeps saying I need to update account password

Can anyone help please.
I have tried everything I can to set up email from my Passport.
I have a pop account and am using Windows 8 on my lap top. I get mails to the lap top and have sync the contacts and calender (created back up file) but when I try to set up email, I put the existing account details for the server etc and it keeps coming back with 'your email account can't be set up right now, please try later' then I get a mail message syaing my account needs to be updated with a password.
I have two email accounts, one at Tiscali and one on our own server.
Any ideas??

My question is whether or not these fields might cause issues somewhere I am not expecting

I think I will do this. I will use my apple ID and set face time and message to work independently. That solves one problrem. My other problem and maybe my bigger problem is that if I am using my apple ID, how do I iflter all of this so that my kids don't see my contacts, get my apps, etc. ?

I fixed it by changing the way my InitialDirContext is created.
Previously I was using:
InitialDirContext ctx = oracle.ldap.util.jndi.ConnectionUtil.getDefaultDirCtx(hostname, portNum, adminName, adminPass);
Now I'm using:

env.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, "com.sun.jndi.ldap.LdapCtxFactory");

In order to use your Apple ID to create an iCloud account, the primary email address associated with the ID must first be verified. If it isn't there, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage your Apple ID, sign in, click on Name, ID and Email addresses on the left, then to the right click Resend under your Primary Email Address to resend the verification email.
