HT204053 Saving to cloud to free up space on iPhone

I am out of space on my phone but purchased 20G icloud storage. Can I create a shared stream to put all of my photos on and then delete my photo album photos to free up space? I don't want to lose my photos, but also don't have a computer I connect to regularly to transfer my photos to.

Photo Stream is designed to be a way to share photos between devices and with family and friends. It is not designed to be for cloud storage. See: My Photo Stream FAQ - Apple Support
You may want to look into iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ - Apple Support It is designed for cloud storage and the following quote from the link describes how it can save space on your phone:
If you turn on Optimize [device] Storage, iCloud Photo Library will automatically manage the size of your library on your iOS device, so you can make the most of your device's storage and access more photos than ever. iCloud Photo Library stores the original, high-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and can keep lightweight, device-optimized versions on each of your devices. As long as you have enough storage, recent photos and videos that you access the most will stay on your device at full resolution.
To turn on Optimize [device] Storage on your device, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos or Settings > Photos & Camera, then select Optimize [device] Storage. You need an Internet connection to access an original photo or video that’s stored only in iCloud.
Having said that, note that it is still in beta. I personally don't yet trust it with the only copy of my photos.
If it must be cloud storage, you may also want to investigate Flickr and Dropbox.

I would like to know how to send songs back to icloud to free up space on my phone?

    Hi dougestale!
You have a couple of options here. Your music purchased through iTunes is always available for re-downloading through the purchase history of your Apple ID. An article about accessing and utilizing this can be found right here:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519
You could also choose to use iTunes Match so that all of your library will be available for streaming anytime. More info about this service can be found here:

Take care, and thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.

  • HT4847 Free up space on iPhone?

Hi. I have only 500mb of space left on my iPhone but 18gb on iCloud. How do I free up space on my phone, please?

iCloud doesn't expand the capacity of your phone, it syncs data from one device to other devices sharing the same iCloud account.  If you want to free up space on your phone you'll have to delete it.  You can see what's taking up the space on your phone by going to Settings>General>Usage.

Yes. That is exactly what you need to be doing on  regular basis.
Import the photos to your computer.
Either via syncing with computer or using iCloud Control Panel (Windows) or iPhoto (Mac).
    -> http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4083
After you import the photos, delete them from Photo Stream/Camera Roll.
You can sync the photos you want on your iPhone back to the iPhone using iTunes. (These photos are not part of the iPhone backup)

  • How do I move purchased movies from itunes to the cloud to free up space on my laptop?

How do I move purchased movies from itunes to the icloud?  I only want them off my laptop (library), as I need more space.  I want to keep them on the ipad they have been moved to.

Delete them from the local computer.  Nothing gets moved.  If the content was purchased from iTunes it should be available for download again in the future.

If the device is synced with iTunes on the computer and the content is deleted from iTunes it will also be removed from the device.
Realistically, if you want to keep the content, keep it stored locally.  Purchase an external drive to store the content on.  Keep in mind that iOS devices are NOT backup devices, they merely mirror the content in the iTunes library on the computer.

  • Free up space on iphone; pictures

    Hi everyone,
Most of my space on my iphone is taken up with photos. I was wondering if anyone knew of a way that I could transfer all of my photos to cloud-based service that would allow me to access them as quickly as I do now by just going to the photos app?
    Thank you,
    Steve

    You're welcome.
For your Photo Stream access on your PC, you need to download and install the iCloud Control Panel.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1455
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4486
PC: Open the iCloud Control Panel for Windows and select the checkbox for Photos (Photo Stream in iCloud Control Panel 2.x). You can click the Options button to verify that My Photo Stream is enabled and adjust the settings. Be sure to click Apply when done.
The photos transferred from one of your computers behind your back was not done by accident or enabled by itself. If you are now syncing your iPhone with iTunes on a different computer, under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes is anything selected? If Sync Photos is enabled, to remove all deselect Sync Photos followed by a sync. If Sync Photos is not enabled, enable it and select an empty folder or a folder of photos with a few photos followed by a sync. This will remove all existing photos on your iPhone that were transferred from the other computer and transfer the new folder of photos to your iPhone. After the sync is complete, deselect Sync Photos under the Photos tab followed by another sync to remove.

  • HT201317 How do I move photos from iPhone to iCloud to free up space on iPhone?

My wife has a ton of photos on her phone which is preventing her from updating some apps and other things because her phone is out of storage space.  How can she move it to her iCloud account so she can delete it from her phone?  She still wants to easily access the photos from her iPhone.

You do not store photos on icloud for archiving.  You do this by syncing photos onto a computer.  icloud will store backups of camera roll photos, but that's only good to you if your device somehow "dies" and you must restore everything back on it.  You can't selectively restore just photos from icloud.
Read this...  import photos to your computer...

  • Can't seem to free enough space on iphone 4 for ios7

Seems others have this problem too... removing pics and videos, hardly any apps (just not a major app person)  voluntary apps are just WWF, Candy Crush, Amazon, Ebay, FB and Twitter. Linked in, Translate, Pic Stitch, ESRB ratings and Weather.
Is there any chance I can get ios7 or am I just out of luck?  I mainly want it for the Face Time capabilities.
    Thanks!

  • TS4104 I would like to know if the music I put in the cloud frees up space on my disk ? And can I put my movies in the cloud ? I-tunes and Flixster ?

    1.   I would like to know if my music that I put in the cloud will free up space on my hard drive?  2. Can I move the movies I got on I-tunes to the Icloud ?  3. How about the movies I got from Flixster ? I need to freeup the the disc of the 1.85 GB on music and  2.69 GB on video .

You have to store the music or movies on your device to listen to or watch them.  Music and movies purchased from the iTunes store is already in iCloud (but not stored in your iCloud account) as it can be redownloaded from the iTunes store if necessary.  Movies from Flixter cannot be stored in iCloud, and music not purchased from theiTunes store can only be stored in iCloud if you subscribe to iTunes Match.
If you need to free up space on your device, import your purchased media to your iTunes library if it isn't already there by connecting your device to your computer, opening iTunes and going to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.  Then sync something off your device to free up space.

  • How can I safely transfer my 125GB of itunes music files to free up space, but still keep itunes on my MBP, and access the music with the cloud and match?

I have already backed up all the itunes files on two different external drives. And I have already set up icloud and itunes match. I am still paranoid about deleting the files from my MBP, but I need to free the space. What steps should I take to delete the files. And can I still keep itunes (w/o all the music files) on my laptop and access the music from the cloud? I know I can run them with the external drive plugged in, but looking for a way to do it w/o pluggin in.

I have tried that as well.  The purchased songs are not in my playlists and they are still there.  I manually deleted them on the phone but the sync puts them right back on there.
I only sync playlists and they aren't on there.

  • I am a bit ignorant when it comes to my iphone 4. Can somone help me delete saved text messages? I have tried to delete them one by one in my messages, but it still says that I have 2.3 saved messages. I just want to free up space  on my phone.

Dearest Ones in the Apple Tech World,
I need to free up space in my storage, and I can do that if I can figure out how to delete my saved text messages. Anyone out there know how in the world I can accomplish this?
I have tried to delete them one by one, but it still says that I have 2.3 GB of saved messages!
I am not the saviest when it comes to operating this phone. Any help would be appreciated!
    THANKS SO MUCH!

There's no way to delete all message threads at one go. You can however do one contact thread at a time.
In Messages app where you see a list of messages from different contacts,  tap Edit (top left), tap the red (on the left), then tap the red Delete button on the right.

Assuming you have finished with your old backup.....
You can see what your iCloud storage is used for and delete any unwanted content at settings > iCloud > backup & storage > manage......

The same is true for photo's.  I have too many photo's on my phone taking up space.  Now I realize I can remove a lot of the photo's via sync options, but ...

This can happen if iTunes gets confused about what is and isn't on the device. These steps should resolve.
    Backup the device.
    Restore as a new device.
    Restore the backup made earlier.
