HT204093 Where is my mail folder on my mac

Okay I hope to make sense here....
I had all my mail in the icloud.  I then created a folder on my mac for mail older than 6 months.  Then mail that was older than 6 months in cloud I moved to my mac.
In mail I had renamed the older than 6 month folder.  I still see my old mail in mail.  I can't find the corresponding folder on mac, or when I do it really is odd size.  Mail in folder on mac is housing 10 years worth of email and coming in at 300MB when I think it would be way bigger, like 1 TB.
I created a new folder in mail, but I can't find the coorseponding folder in documents---> mail folder.
Where is the mail folder on the mac?  Where does it naturally default too?
Thanks,
Andy

Thank you of the quick reply and I kind of now have more info.
Since posting my question I "exported" the mailbox and voila, 2.6GB of info.  So I think I have some solution.
"Are you desiring to Archive mail older than six months and remove that from Mail?" Not from Mail, but the iCloud, but when I did remove from icloud, I want to make another back up, even though I have time machine.  I want to basically burn a DVD or put old email on other storage media.
"With a better understanding of your goal -- I can help you to a solution." Okay great, appreciate it! I hope I made/make sense.
"If you haven't done a Rebuild lately, I'd highly recommend you start there:"  Ummm  I've never rebuild.... so I also wanted to back up the data before I rebuild I think, right?  I have no other copy, these emails were removed from the iCloud, and put in a mail folder on my mac (which I can't find the mailbox (mbox) on the mac, user name--->documents---> mail folder---> there is no corresponding mbox that I just created, this folder/get info says circa 2012), so the mail on my mac is not copied from iCloud. Technically I do have the time machine backup.... but you never know if that gets corrupted.
So my thought prior to rebuild is to export, as a back up, then rebuild?  As to mailbox naming, since I have no idea where the corresponding folders are on my mac, exporting first, might be best option.  If I rebuild, will that break or possibly lose data?
Thoughts?

  • I d like to export mail folder ("on my mac") to different mac

I d like to export mail folder ("on my mac") to different mac!
    In detail:
I got a MacBookPro and have a lot of important emails saved in mail under the "on my mac" folder. How do I transfer those folder and emails to my Imac? Both macs mail is working fine but if i create a new folder under "on my mac", emails on the Imac disapear and they are not in the "on my mac" folder of the Imac. Any suggestions?

You will have to buy the version that is compatible with the version of Apple OS X that you are running.

  • Where is the mail folder in 10.8

I recently changed from 10.6.8 (snow leopard) to 10.8 (mountain lion).  In 10.6, in the finder window, under the library tab, there was a folder for "Mail".  I was able to copy the folder "Mail" and take it to another computer I have at a different location and keep both computers synched.
In 10.8, the Mail folder is not there.
Where is the application Mail, storing the mail folders with their content?  I want to do the same thing of synching another computer with all of my current mail boxes and content.
    Lee

    It did work!
    Thank You.
I did notice that the "Mail" folder in the Library maintains the same date, (the date when I installed Mountain Lion, June 11 2013 6:15 PM) even after there are updates and new E-mails comming in.
The size of the folder does change when I delete (put into trash E-mails) or receive new E-mails, but the date of "date modified" never changes. It stays on June 11, 2013 6:15PM.
Because the date never changes, it makes it hard to know when i look into "Time Machine", which is the most current Mail folder.
    HELP PLEASE!

  • Where is my mail folder in time machine?

For the first time today I've backed up using Time Machine, on my MacBook Pro using OS 10.6.8.
When I check the external harddrive I've backed up to, I can see/discern all my MacBook Pro files except emails. Mail only appears in a folder called Applications as the application itself. A friend using Yosemite says within the Users folder he can drill down to a Mail folder that houses the emails. He also says he's never failed to get his emails back when he's restored from his Time Machine back-up. My Users folder does not have a Mail folder.
Can anyone reassure me that my emails are backed up somewhere, or direct me to where they are?

It is highly unusual that your Mail does not appear in your Library folder. Somehow, it would seem that you've told the Mail application to store the mail in a non-standard location.
Ok, the first thing is to make sure we're talking about the same "Library" folder. You have at least two. One is at the root of your startup drive, and is the Library folder for the whole system. The other is user-specific, and belongs to you, but is inaccessible to other users on the Mac (of which there may be none).
From a unix file system perspective the two Library folders (directories) exist in these two places:
    /Library
    /Users/user_name/Library
Your Mail folder should be in the second one. If it's truly not there, then you could find it by opening the Terminal application and run the following command:
    mdfind -name Outbox.mbox
That should show you where Mail's outbox is, and therefore where your Mail folder is. Once you know that location, you can then check your Time Machine drive, using the instructions I provided in my previous post, to find and confirm that Time Machine is backing up your mail.

  • Where is the mail folder in Mtn. Lion?

I am setting up Time Machine to back up the files on my iMac.  I want to exclude Applications, the System, and related files for space reasons, but want to make sure that I get a backup of my e-mail files.  I have searched for the MAIL folder but can't find it.  What is the path to where the e-mails are stored in Mountain Lion?  Thanks

Hmm - out of curiosity - would the User Library be part of the System deep down in the file hierarchy?
    @ ReidMac:
Not sure if excluding the System (or Applications for that matter) would be wise - it may prevent you from being able to restore from Time Machine in case your system is borked? If size is of concern - and since Time Machine keeps making backups until the disk/partition is full - have you considered a different backup strategy, such as a bootable clone which needs exactly the same amount of space as your system currently uses?

sounds like a corrupt database or index
the glitch is your home folder and mail folder, esp look at syncservices
I'd post in the mail or Lion forum where you will find similar issues being discussed.

  • Can I copy mail prefs and mail folder from one mac to another?

    Hi everyone,
My mac book pro's mail is corrupted... I've tried with a new .plist file and other than losing my settings it fixes the problem ! Instead of recreating my settings could I just replace the .plist file and the mac folder in my library from the imac (essentially the same on both computers) and be good to go without the setup hassle?
Or is this a very very very bad idea?
    Thanks for the info,
    Philly

Yes, that should work just fine, if the same version of Mail.
For safety drag, your old mail folder and plist to the desktop, until you're sure all is well.

  • Where is the stamps folder on the mac for Acrobat Pro Xl?

About a month ago I downloaded dynamic stamps for received and paid and "installed" them on a team-mates mac running OS X.
It was straight forward.  I did some forum searches and it gave me instructions to copy the .PDF file with stamps containing java scripts to a folder on the mac.
Now a month later I find I need to do it on my mac.  I am looking for the stamps folder on where to "install" the .PDF file again and can't seem to find the stamps folder on the mac.  I tried creating the stamps folder to see if it would take and acrobat did not recognize it.
I tried using the console to find the stamps folder for user and application with no luck.
Any help would be great.  I know it works because I was able to install it properly on one mac in the past, I just did not copy down the instructions and can't reproduce it.
    Thanks.

It's in your user (Home) > Library folder. In recent versions of Mac OS X, this is hidden by default.
In the Finder, hold down the Option key first while choosing Go > Library so you can see it.
    Then find it in:
    Library > Application Support > Adobe > Acrobat > 11.0 > Stamps

  • Gmail IMAP Sent  Mail folder missing in Mac Mail

I made a change in Mac Mail by using the Mailbox/Use this mailbox for Sent Mail menu item on the [Gmail] Sent Mail folder and the original
[Gmail] Sent Mail folder has vanished. It still appears in the Gmail web interface and is checked on to show up in IMAP, but it doesn't appear in Mac Mail. Sent messages to appear in the Mac Mail snet folder, which is fine but I want to [Gmail] Sent Mail folder back. I tried turning the "show in IMAP" setting in Gmail on and off and it works for other folders, but not for the "Sent Mail" folder. I also tried restoring an older copy of the com.apple.mail.plist file but that didn't work either. Any ideas how to get it back? Pop is turned off as well.

It seems this is the desired behavior in Mail, as I don't need the [Gmail] folders to appear since the mail is all in the Mac Mail folders.
Of course, this might all break again when I upgrade to Mavericks :-(

  • How do I permenently delete yahoo bulk mail folder on my Mac ? I

How do I permenently delete yahoo bulk mail folder on my iMac?

    1. No.
    2. You either buy a download code for Mountain Lion from the online Apple Store or get Yosemite from the Mac App Store.
    3. Game Center isn’t part of 10.7.5.

  • Where is the mail folder use/library in MacOS X 10.7.5 in a Mac Air?

I would like to know how to find the folder wher the mail application is storing the mails in the MacOS X 10.7.5
I know is somewhere in mail/ library, but I am unable to find it. Perhaps is hiden and I don't know how to locate it.
    Thank you very much.

Actually it's in youruser/Library/Mail. The user's Library folder is hidden by default in 10.7 and later, but if you go to Finder, hold down the Option key, and select the Go menu, the Library folder will be shown in the dropdown list and you can open it from there.

  • Where is my mail folder

I have decided to restore back to SL as I find the performance of Lion slow and my MBP is running far hotter than I'd like and the fans are revving way high.
So I've backed up using Time Machine, initialised the hard drive and resinstalled 10.6.8.   Now I'm looking for my mail to convert over. It seems to be missing
    It was in User\Library\Mail\....

There are instructions here for restoring from Time Machine for Mail:
    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/15.html
    See the blue box.
However with the new Lion format I don't think you can go from the new format back to the old one.
If it's an IMAP not a POP account then all emails will still be on the server and should just redownload.
Kappy has got a useful list on how to restore from Lion to Snow Leopard - I'll see if I can find you the link.

  • Mac Mail Folder on my Mac - Moving it and contents to new MBP

I have a folder in Mac Mail that is on my Mac. It's an archive of my old emails. I thought if I copied it from Home>Library>Mail>Mailboxes to the same on the MBP I could view them in Mac Mail. Well I was wrong. So how do I move this file over from my old Mac to my new Mac where I can view them in Mac Mail? Thanks.

Drag the old folder onto the new one's Desktop, then in Mail select File/Import Mailboxes, then check Mac OSX Mail on the next screen and select the old mailbox folder.
