HT204136 Restoring from iCloud and iTunes backup used together

How would I restore my iPhone if I'm doing iCloud and iTunes backup together? The articles lists that as an option, but when it comes time to restore, can't you only pick one to restore from?

Here are a couple links that might help you decide

UUpdate the new iphone to iOS 8.3 before you try to restore the backup.

  • HT1766 I've just purchased an Iphone 5c. I have chosen the restore from iCloud and the phone has now restarted to complete the restore. It has been 3 hours and the progress bar has not moved.

I have chosen the restore from iCloud and the phone has now restarted to complete the restore. It has been 3 hours and the progress bar has not moved. I have now tried to reload again by holding the sleep etc, to no avail

If all you want is your old photos, you could backup your new phone using iTunes, then restore it from your iCloud backup, import the old photos to your computer, then restore it from the backup your made in iTunes returning your newer data to your phone.  If you want your old photos on your phone, sync them there from your computer using iTunes.  The process would look like this:
Connect your phone to your computer, when it appears in iTunes on the left sidebar right-click on it and select Transfer Purchases; right-click again and select Backup.
Disconnect from your computer and go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings to return it to new
Go through the activation setup, choosing to Restore from iCloud backup.  Make sure your phone is plugged into a charger and has access to wi-fi as this can take hours to complete.
When complete, without connecting your phone to your computer, open iTunes and go to Preferences.  On the Devices tab check "Prevent...from syncing automatically"
Now import the old photos to your computer (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083)
When done, open iTunes, right-click on the name of your phone on the left sidebar and select Restore from Backup, choose the backup you made in step 1.
Go to the Photos tab and select the photos you want to sync to your phone and sync.

Welcome to the Apple Community Xena1940.
When you restore from back up, the process will restore the OS and some initial data, it will then restart and allow you to use your device while the remaining data is downloaded and restored in the background. have you allowed enough time for this to complete.

  • My ipad2 wants to now setup as new, but it's not new, and asks to restore from icloud or itunes. I don't know what to do

For no known reason, my Ipad 2 crashed. I turned it on one day and it acts like it's new. It says "setup new ipad" or restore using icloud or itunes. I don't know which to do because I don't want to lose what I had on my ipad and I don't know if I had icloud setup or not.

You don't have any choice. You will have to set the iPad up all over again now. Take a guess and pick one or the other and hope. You will be able to download most of your paid content again for free.

  • HT4796 i have successfully migrated the music but it just shows up in my files and has not updated my iTunes library which is still getting the music from iCloud and is not using the migrated files. Any ideas?

I have successfully used windows migration software to move my music library from a PC to my MacBook Air.
However the music files are just stored in my file system and have not updated my itunes files. Itunes is still getting the music down from icloud instead of using the music files.
    Any ideas?

If you're using Windows Movie Maker and HP Photo to build slide shows, this is not an iPod touch issue (nor an iTunes issue), so I'd suggest you take up the problem on a web site that deals with Movie Maker or HP Photo issues. It's really not something we can help with in this forum.
If you're building this slide show on your iPod, please post back and tell us what app(s) you're trying to use, and whether the iPod app on your iPod touch shows and plays your songs correctly. Knowing the specific model of iPod you have and the version of iOS it's running will probably also help.
    Regards.

  • HT201250 After restoring from a time machine backup using migration assistant I can't log in

Hi, I recently bought a Mac Pro and using a Mountain Lion boot disk I made installed a fresh ML install which went fine. During the final part of install it gives you the option of restoring user data etc etc from a time machine backup which I have from my MacBook Pro which again in principal went fine until I went to log in when I got the message 'An error has occurred unable to log into this account a this time'.
Looking on the web I thought at first it was a password issue so restarted with command-r and reset the password, however the same error still occurs. I don't think it is password issue as if you deliberately enter the wrong password it rejects it immediately where as with the correct password it hangs for about 15secs before throwing up the above error.
    Can anyone offer any advice?
The only thing I can possibly think of is that on my MBP where the time machine backup is from my home folder is on a 2nd HDD that is not the boot disk and I only have a single HDD on my MacPro.......

You might try to access the desired Time Machine backup from "Browse Other Time Machine Disks" (click Time Machine icon in the Dock).
Also, you might find some help here.

  • Restore from an old iTunes backup but preserve recent app data

I may need to restore from an iTunes backup that is several months ago, and I'm trying to figure out if there's any way to preserve the newer app data that gets synced to iTunes.  Obviously it's not an issue for apps that store data in the cloud, but for my apps that store data on the device, when I sync *after* restoring from an old backup, will the more recent app data that *presumably* is on my computer in iTunes overwrite the old app data now on the phone?

Yes, if you restore from backup all the old dats gets erased.

  • Restoring from iCloud and getting Disconnected Half Way

    Hey,
I am dispirit  for help here, my iPhone got stolen, and the first thing I did was lock it remotely, after that it dropped of the grid and disappeared.
Anyway I bought a new iPhone and am trying to restore it from my iCloud account, everything works perfect however though my backup is only ~280MB in size the restore estimating time is ~ 3 hours. and from 6 tries already none of them succeeded.
I keep on getting DC or dropped half way through, its always a different percentage and I am sure its not my internet connection.
I tried to bench mark how fast the restore is downloading by calculating it from my router and it wasn't downloading very fast, infact it was very slow like 2MB each 5 min which was really strange cause my connection is 4Mbps and it never drops speed and the iOS on the device is already updated to 5.1.
Now I don't know what to do, my backup is stored in the iCloud but I can't get to it , really depressed

    1. There is no indicators showing the state.
    2. Maybe caused by slow internet connection.
Did you have a local backup instead, which should be more faster.

  • Is it possible to restore my iPhone from both iCloud AND iTunes?

    Hi there,
Is it possible to restore my iPhone from both iCloud AND iTunes?
I backed up phone to iCloud only (not iTunes... yea Im a dummy)  and when I restored everything was great except my music and pictures never came back! I did get a fraction of my pictures though... maybe 40 out of 1000. I synced with iTunes and now have my music back but almost no pics.
Shall I just erase all setting/content and  try again to restore from iCloud and then sync with iTunes? It just takes so long so I thought I'd ask to see if anyone had a better idea. I miss my pics.... D*mn iCloud
    Thanks so much!
    Lekha

    Welcome to Apple Communities
Yes, you can restore from an iCloud backup and sync with iTunes. Probably you won't recover all your photos with iCloud backup because you can only recover photos taken in your iPhone. When you sync your iPhone in iTunes, you will have your music and photos

  • Restore from iCloud backup. Pictures missing and ones there are blurry?

I went to the Apple Store and got a new phone so they went and did a restore from backup from iCloud. So, everything was fine and I went home and my apps were there. I look and only 900/1,700 photos transferred from iCloud onto the new device. Although, I have no more room on iCloud so they may still be there but because there is not enoguh wiggle room in the cloud for them to download, they cannot be pushed to the device. Or, more likely, my photos may be gone because the "genius" at Apple had wiped my phone so I'm not sure if my backup is still available or if it just says that it is. And, the 900 pictures that did transfer are all blurry and wont unblur so what should I do? Should I buy more storage and then restore this phone and restore from the previous iCloud backup? Help please

First of all, treat your device like a camera - always sync photos to a computer for archiving.  Many users have lost photos doing a restore from iCloud, and this is generally due to several reasons: only photos in the camera roll are backed up, and (it seems) iCloud messes up often enough when backup/restore is used.

  • Water damaged so got new phone. Restore from iCloud? or Older iTunes backup?

Hi. My wife bricked her old iPhone 6 by water damage. We now have a new unactivated phone from Verizon. My question is...how should I restore her new phone? From her daily iCloud backup? Or from the older iTunes backup from a few months ago?
I've heard that iCloud restores don't typically restore everything like Photos, etc, so I'm wondering if I just try to restore from the older iTunes backup to get more of the photos back.
    Any help would be appreciated.

If the photos were in the Camera Roll then they will be in the iCloud backup.

  • How to restore from Time Machine when backup is larger than HDD

In an attempt to upgrade my 13 inch, 8GB 2010 MacBook Pro (750 GB HDD) from Mavericks to Yosemite, the Yosemite install was stuck at "about a minute remaining" for hours (overnight).  So I cancelled the install and tried again only to be stuck at the same spot.  I took the mac to an Apple Genius Bar to have it looked at while it was stuck at that install step.  They couldn't fix it and did a fresh install of Yosemite.  Luckily, I had backed it up about a week before, so I wasn't losing a whole lot.  I attempted to restore from the Time Machine backup using Migration Assistant (2TB external USB 3.0) of the latest backup but the estimated time to restore from backup kept climbing to more than 150 hours.  Eventually it had an error message that there wasn't enough free space on the HDD (the same 750 GB drive that my backups were from).  There was less than 100GB of free space on the HDD before attempting the upgrade.
How can I restore at least a portion of my Time Machine backup, like my Documents and Apps?  I don't even mind going back to Mavericks so that I can use my computer again!  For example, I need MS Office but I cannot use it on Yosemite if I do not first get my original backup working again so that I can unregister the current version (the product key is "lost" with my inaccessible backups!).
Most of the information I can find online is how to prepare for a proper backup, but at this point since Apple Genius did a fresh install, Time Machine has my only backup!
    Any advice would be great!
p.s. This may be useful to know:  I had several virtual machines from Parallels: Windows, Ubuntu, etc before I upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard.  Mavericks required an updated Parallels that I never got but I'm sure those VMs are hiding in my backup drive.

OS X Yosemite: Restore items backed up with Time Machine
While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.
If you need to restore from a backup of the hidden user Library folder, first select a snapshot, then press shift-command-G. A Go to Folder dialog will open. In it, you'll enter the path to the folder. The dialog will help you by automatically completing the parts of the path when you start to type them.
The path begins with slash character ("/"). Enter that. The rest of the parts will be separated by slashes.
The next part is the date and time of the current snapshot. Enter a "2", and the rest of the date should be filled in automatically. Press the right-arrow key to jump to the end of the path. Enter a slash to start the next part.
Next is the name of the volume (usually "Macintosh HD" unless you gave it a different name.) Start to type that, then jump to the end and enter a slash.
The next part is "Users", followed by a slash.
Next is your (short) user name, which is also the name of your home folder.
Finally, enter "Library", then press return. You should now be in the Library folder. From there you can get around as in the Finder.
