To restore from a back up made through iTunes, follow these instructions.
To restore from a back up made through iCloud, try the following:
The difficulty in restoring iCloud data from a back up is that the back up is older than the current version on iCloud and anything that is restored gets removed again when an iCloud sync occurs.
Ensure the device is connected to your local network.
Start the restore from iCloud back up.
Allow the devices settings to restore (watch for the confirmation of completion).
As the apps begin to restore pull the connection to your router WAN port (the one that goes to the telephone point).
Wait for the time out confirmation.
Navigate to settings > iCloud and turn off contact syncing (keep contacts when prompted).
Reconnect the router to the internet and let the restore process complete.
Delete any iCloud contacts from iCloud.com on a computer.
Navigate to settings > iCloud and turn on contact syncing (merge contacts when prompted).
May I suggest that you carry out a back up to iTunes before you try anything, that way should things become even worse, you can at least restore back to where you are now.

HT4859 I'd lost 80% of my contacts from iCloud activation from my iPhone 4.

I'd lost 80% of my contacts from iCloud activation from my iPhone 4. All I did was Settings > iCloud > swithed Contacts and Notes on. It had asked me if I wanted to merge my contacts with iCloud. I selected yes and when I look in contact most are gone!
I have an iPhone 4 and was operating using iOS 6.0.1 version at the time this happened. Can anyone help me retrieve my contacts? I had tried asking a genious at an Apple Store as well requested 2 technical follow ups - They were all useless. I can't restore my contacts as I have not back up my phone for a while.

Thank you for your suggestion. I backup on itunes. I went to itunes, deleted syncing my contacts, then re-synced them. But the Facetime capability option continues to be there on most (not all, for some curious reason) of my contacts. I am not sure I posed my question correctly. I want to be able to FT with my family, so don't want to delete the FT capability totally from my iphone and ipad. But I don't want all these other iphone calls from various contacts to ring on my ipad as FT calls. I want a way to select with whom I have FT capabilities. Any further suggestions? My Contact from ICloud imports only the name but not every thing else if I want to import it to Contact on my Mac. But that only happens with my own card.
Before, my V-Card in Contacts on my Mac was ok, but now it disappeared. When I try to import it from ICloud only my name appears.

The backup of your iPod Touch would include your camera roll photos. Restoring the backup to another iPod Touch or iPhone would recover them. Photos will not be restored by restoring the backup to an iPad.
Note: Apple deletes iCloud backups after 180 days of inactivity so be sure to do this before then.

The text messge cache is separate from your contacts. The only way to clear it is to restore your phone as new without using your backup. This is not related to iCloud.

Go to Settings>General>Reset and tap Erase All Content and Settings. This will erase your device. Then you will go through the setup screens again as you did when your device was new, and when given the option, select Restore from iCloud Backup.

Meanwhile, it automatically backed it up a few times on my iPhone and to the iCloud. In other words, I forever lost my clean phone contact list. Somehow, I only have gmail email list on my iPhone contact list.. bizarre... So, I went to iCloud and cleaned up the contact list since it's a lot easier to do on iCloud than directly on the phone. I even exported the Contact as a vcard into external file. But I can't figure out how to restore my Contact list by importing - either from iCloud, or, from external file into my iPhone.
Am I clear?
