Contacts have to be in the "iCloud" section of contacts. If they are in "On My iPhone" section, they do not sync to icloud.

I went into the cloud on phone it was on. Turned off and back on. Now i have 6 of one contactDeleted face books also incase that was the issue. you can look for some third party solutions that allows create any number of directories and even sync them with another systems (e.g. MS Exchange, LDAP, Gmail ...).
Also do not expect the auto complete there, searches allow to search for part of the contact - that is limitation of phone fetures (I suppose Cius is differend story ...). However you can find something like IntelliSearch - that allows you to pres a key once and this click represents each character on the key (somethink like T9 on mobile phones).

Does windows and mac run continuously using parallel, or is there some way to stop xp from running if you are not using it?

If you are running MS Windows in Parallels or Fusion or any other virtualization software you can shut it down while the machine is operating and still run OS X. There is no trick, you shut down MS Windows just like you would with any other MS Windows machine. That is one of the main advantages of virtualizaiton software, the ability to run both environments simultaneously if you want. If you don't want to run Windows then simply don't start the virtualizaiton software or if it's already running quit it like you do any app on a Mac.

It also takes time for the photos to be transferred out of your iPhone and into Photo stream on Apple's iCloud servers.
Note that this can't happen if your iPhone is not connected to a WiFi network:
When you enable My Photo Stream on your devices, all new photos you take or import to those devices will be automatically added to your photo stream.
iOS devices: New photos you take are automatically uploaded to your photo stream when you leave the Camera app and are connected to Wi-Fi. My Photo Stream does not push photos over cellular connections.
Macs: Any new photos you import to iPhoto or Aperture begin uploading automatically when you have a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection. Or you can change your iPhoto or Aperture preferences so that only photos you manually add to My Photo Stream are uploaded.
PC with iCloud Control Panel 2.0 or later: Open a Windows Explorer window and under Favorites select iCloud Photos if you are using iCloud Control Panel 3.0 (or Photo Stream if you are using 2.0 to 2.1.2). Open My Photo Stream. Click the "Add photos" button. Select the photos to import to My Photo Stream, then click Open.

You can't delete it. Look on all your screens and inside all your folders. If you still can't find it go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Home Screen Layout. This will restore the home screen to its original configuration but may move other apps around to do so.

because it went through the washing machine. ( I know!)
the screen doesn't work, but when I plug it into the USB port, the laptop recognizes it, and the call key doesn't work properly to call out, or obviously, anything else.
is there any way to get the contacts from the phone into the verizon backup assistant, or is there any other way? like taking it to the store?

I am not being critical, but you seem to want Safari to behave exactly like Chrome. Every software developer has a plan. Sometimes features in one product parallel other products - sometime not. There might be some things available that would help you. Do not hold your breath, however, for suggestions from people who use these forums. Most of us use (and like) Apple products. If you wish to make suggestions for future improvements, there is a feedback area on this web site that Apple employees read/review.
Candidly, your approach would be akin to suggesting that Apple emulate the "features" in Windows (heaven forbid).
I use Safari (and have for years). I use Firefox (not a bad product) as my alternate browser.
Sorry for what appears to be a pedantic lecture. However, I think most of us adapt to different products if we really want to use them.

I want email as I want this documented offical and no other means offeres me that assurance. I'd also like to discuss comensation for being harrassed with phone calls.

Well if you pay your bill the calls would not happen.
You need only tell them not to call you during working time.
The Fair Debt Collections Practices Act states you must tell them it is not convenient.
Now if marketing calls you can opt out at the Verizon web portal under your My Verizon account.
You will not get compensation for them to call you. Nice try.
However they could just shut your phone off and then you will call them.
Email is not an option.

I don't have the same version of OS X here but try System Preferences>Keyboard. Is there an option similar to "Use the F1, etc, keys as standard function keys"?
If so, and it has a checkmark, uncheck it & see if that does the trick.

Thanks for the response. That was helpful. However, I still want to know why did the songs I purchased yesterday appear on my IPod for downloading but the those I purchased today did not? After you rassistance I went to settings and turned on automatic downloading for my ipod. So if it wasn't enabled yesterday, how was I able to see the purchases I made yesterday on my computer on the ipod and then download them to the ipod? That is what I expected to see today but all I was seeing were the songs I purchased yesterday and not the ones I did today.

when i type in the name to send a text message it pops up and sends but the names do not show in contacts or on the message after i send it, They are somewhere but not on my phone and i just backed up my icloud.

The autocomplete names you see when you send text messages are in a separate memory cache on your phone and are not tied to your contacts. It's entirely possible to have names that appear there without having the contact on your phone. (if you ever delete a contact from someone you have sent a text message to, for example, their name will still appear when you address a text message even though their contact has been deleted.) You'll just have to add the missing contacts separately.

I wish to insert small animations into a Keynote presentation which I can make from my desktop, although I will ultimately wish to deliver from my ipad. Phone adds + to some numbers in contact list

phone adds a + to all numbers from my contact list that start with 571, making them international calls and prohibitive. When I enter the number in directly I can call, but not if a bring it up from the contact list
