I am trying to use a Microsoft wired 600 keyboard on my Macbook OS 10.8.4. The macbook identifies the keyboard correcly as a European keyboard, but that's it. It doesn't recognize the y is now a z, etc. Anything I can do?

The default setting for the function keys is that they do OS X functions.
To get a regular function hold the fn key and then press the function key.
This action can be reversed in keyboard preferences.

Mapping keys on Microsoft Keyboard

I have a Microsoft keyboard plugged into my MacBook Pro. Functionally it works fine. But since the keys are mapped in a different way, I constantly screw up the key presses when it's plugged in on my desk, or same thing when I don't have it plugged in and I'm on the road.
I've used DoubleCommand to remap keys before, but it remaps any all all keyboards, and doesn't differentiate between the MBP keyboard and an external keyboards.
Is there a tool or a method that I can not do anything to the MBP, but remap an external Microsoft keyboard?

External Microsoft keyboard with Spanish characters

I have a Macbook 2,1 (late 2007) white running 10.6.8. Have been having reoccurring kernelpanic problems (apparently associated with Skype and video) and Bluetooth connectivitybeing dropped intermittently. Havedone all of the research that I can on both of these problems and have pursuedalmost every one of the suggestions found on the various support groups toaddress these problems. One of thefeatures that I’m giving up is Bluetooth, so I am now using a wired mouse(Logitech) and just purchased a Microsoft Wired Keyboard 600 here in Seville,Spain, that claims to be Mac-compatible. This keyboard is a Spanish keyboard. I have installed the driver software for the Microsoftkeyboard for a Mac, available on the Microsoft support sight. However, I have not been able to getany of the new or relocated keys to work correctly. My system does not recognize the placement of the variouskeys and symbols provided by the new keyboard and instead, simply inputs thestandard Apple keyboard key symbols. I’ve worked with Language and Text preferences and the keyboardpreferences but to no avail. Isthere some way that I can make the keys on the Microsoft keyboard workcorrectly? Thanks in advance forany help that anyone can provide.

Is one of your problems that the characters typed do not match what is on the keyboard? In that case you may need to install a special keyboard layout, because PC keyboards are slightly different than the Mac versions. If you email me I can send you one from Logitech to try (tom at bluesky dot org).

How about my microsoft keyboard and mouse?

I have a microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse that have the extra buttons, like media controls, volume controls, the F-keys that are also shortcuts like undo & redo & new& open & such and I was wondering if those will work with my MacBook Pro that I am going to buy sometime soon. Like will Microsoft come out with a driver, does Apple supply one, will it just work?

I have a older wireless Microsoft keyboard/mouse at work (can't remember the model) and it is connected to a KVM with a Windows machine and various Macs. The volume controls works and I use F12 for the CD eject, which is a standard Apple keyboard command. Haven't tried the other keys on the Mac side mainly because I don't have a need for them. If they do work I'll post back.

What do you want to do specifically. They are two different document formats - one is PDF, the other DOC or DOCX. In what way do you wish to "add" ad PDF to a word document. You can embed a mini version within a document (copy it and paste it from within the x.doc) but that's a pretty hokey looking solution.
Oh, its mostly irrelevant if its office 2004,8 or 11 - they all do this more or less the same way.

When I disable my left windows key for gameing using Microsoft keyboard and mouse software, I can no longer type in firefox. How can i fix this?

Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse Software that you install with Microsoft keyboard and mice, (latest version) allows you to disable your windows key so that you don't accidentally hit it when gaming. When I take advantage of this feature, I can no longer type in Firefox. Typing in Firefox is completely disabled. Other browsers, windows, applications work, but not Firefox. What is it about the windows key that firefox needs for typing. Strange problem, but annoying because I have to use a different browser while game. Certainly not a deal breaker, but kinda strange.

the caps button doesn't work at all, the letter buttons display capitals when pushed whether the caps button is on or off, the shift keys are also out of whack!!
It seems it somehow got relocated to the "0" button because if you push and hold the zero button down the keyboard seems to operate normally, the number keys display numbers when pushed the letter keys display lower case when pushed but release the zero button and your back in the twilight zone!! Can anybody help me resolve this issue? one more thing im using an external usb keyboard right now and it seems to function properly if that helps any.

What MacBook Pro have you got? Only Unibody MacBooks Pro (Late 2008 and newer) have a backlit keyboard. If you have one of these MacBooks Pro, you can set up its illumination in System Preferences > Keyboard. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4882

That will work to import Excel spreadsheets but you asked "how do i get microsoft excel on my macbook pro?". The answer remains, install Excel.
LibreOffice is a good alternative to MS Office but it is not 100% compatible. So if you are exporting spreadsheets from LibreOffice for others to import to Excel, be aware that the export may not be 100% as you intended.

Also, there are other productivity suites:
1. iWork. It's the Apple's productivity suite and it includes Pages, Numbers and Keynote. You can purchase it at the Mac App Store.
2. LibreOffice. It's free and open-source, so you should try it first > http://www.libreoffice.org

Using a Mac wireless keyboard with a MacBook

I just bought a mac wireless keyboard with the intention of using an external monitor and a wireless keyboard with my MacBook (Leopard - 10.5.4.) I have a logitech cordless mouse. I installed the firmware update for the keyboard, it shows connected, and is turned, the light flashed for about 3 seconds,but the wireless keyboard doesn't work - only the laptop keyboard works. Any suggestions? I'm thinking it's beyond my expertise and I just need to return it and use it as a laptop. Do I have to also have a wireless mouse?

Excuse the ring. I finally found the answer. You can't have mouse enabled in Universal Access if you're using a keyboard that doesn't have the number keypad at the right.
