HT204247 Why is my iPhone Backup WAY larger than estimated? Pics incl.

Thank you for reading!
I have an iPhone 5S 16 GB running ios 8.1.3. My iPhone is being backed up to iCloud. Currently the backup is estimated at nearly 600 MB. I am utilizing iCloud photostream. I do not have photos saved locally. The largest app under the estimate (when clicking "manage more storage" is only 12 mB.
Why is the backup SO large?!

You are welcome for reading. 600 MB backup is not large, by all means. I have no imessages, about 60 photos and my backup is over 1 Gig. You just don't realize what happens with files. If you were to create smallest file possible by using notepad on your computer and typing one letter, it would still have more then 20 kbytes. We are talking apps that require bigger files for even smallest stuff. So you can pursue that avenue - why or why or just be happy that yet you don't have to pay for storage over 5 gigs. Your poison.

  • Why is menu size so much larger than the files?

I am somewhat perplexed - I'm making a single-layer dvd and have a simple single screen theme (no animation) - it has one drop zone. The movie has 28 chapters so there are five of them, but so far I've added only one montage of photos to each menu page - it's a "mobile" quality in media browser and ave only 10 - 20 MB, then one song. On average these movie clips are 1:00 to 2:00 min long and the music is cut to that length. So, all told, it's probably less than 110 MB in files - but when I look at the project properties, the menus are 3301 MB!!!
The movie itself is only 1.1 GB so what is going on?
It's preventing me from doing the project and I've got no idea why it's making the menu size so much larger than the file sizes?
Can you please help me figure out what to do?
    Alexa

The 2 min clips were natively 2 min - I had each one separate and actually converted to media browser in "mobile" size (b/c the drop zone was 4 x 6 in size in the theme). They were tiny - in most cases I was shortening the audio (e.g. the song was 4 minutes and I was setting the loop to only 1:30 b/c that's how long the video clip was on the menu).
BUT, to resolve the question (I always like to post the answer) - I ended up duplicating the project to try to reimport the video. It was a fresh iDVD project and I happened to click on the project tree of screens - and, lo and behold, the ENTIRE menu was duplicated for some reason (and the movie, actually). I went back to the original and it was the same! I have no idea how that would happen do you? It only had one main menu screen - and then an entire duplicate menu - which I wouldn't even know how to access if I didn't see it in the project menu tree?
The only think of is that at one point I added a title menu link to the scene selection - it gave me a warning that my menu was more than 12 minutes, did I want to fix or ignore and fix later - which confused me b/c it was under 12 min, then but I clicked ignore. Does that create an alternate title menu and send people back to something else?
Anyway, I deleted the entire extra scene selection menus (5 of them) and it was back to under 4 GB.
So, I was able to burn, but still wondering about creating the "title menu" link on scene selections? It drives me crazy that it doesn't automatically do that so I like to add "main menu" links.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Why are my trimmed QT movies larger than the original?

I have a bunch of raw .dv files copied over from my camcorder that have never been edited or opened in any other program. When I open in QT X and trim the file, the trimmed MOV version is often larger than the raw DV. On one file, I even trimmed about half of it away and it still came out larger. I was under the assumption that DV is not compressed and neither is raw MOV,
After trimming the file and saving it, I select "movie" as the format since at this point I want to leave the files in as raw as a format as possible before I bring into an editing program like iMovie.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Since QuickTime X doesn't have any export "options" (other than dimensions) a "raw" DV Stream format should always be smaller in file size.
DV Stream is about 13 GB's per hour of recording. A QuickTime X "conversion" would use H.264 video and AAC audio codecs and should be about ten times smaller in file size.
Are you sure your files are DV Stream?
In any event, QuickTime X may not be the best tool for the job.
QuickTime Player Pro doesn't re-compress the source codec if you use a simple "save" or "save as".
A regular "save" after doing any edits will replace your source file with the newer version. No way to restore any of the edited information so you should use save as (keeping the original).

  • Why does my artwork print slightly larger than actual size? - MacOS 10.9.2

I have an issue which I have no answer.  Every time I print an artwork for product mockup, say a 3x5 card, it prints slightly larger than a 3x5 card.  I have to manually scale my artwork down to 98.5 in the print dialog to get as close as possible to the actual size.  Its not related to a specific printer.  I have an HP printer and a Canon printer and the issue exists exactly the same between the two.  I'm running Illustrator 17.1 on an iMac running MacOS 10.9.2.  Can you please help make this easier for me?

    Wayne,
Are you using PostScript printer drivers (or at least PostScript emulation)? Non PostScript drivers may behave a bit like gremlins.
What happens if you Save As or Print to PDF and then print from that using the actual size/no adaptation to paper size?

  • Why are the incremental backups so large??!!   16GB vs. 300MB

I have the Time Machine system preference turned to Off, as I do the backups Manually every couple of weeks (Back Up Now from the Menu Bar). Here is what puzzles me: I don't work with large files. My incremental increase in size in a couple of weeks might be 200-300 Megabytes. Yet, each incremental backup is 12- 16 GB, which of course takes forever. Can anyone shed any light into why the large size??

what Tesserax said ! or, if you have +disk warrior+ installed, it could be its +trash protection+ folder.
install timetracker from here. it will let you look at any given backup and determine what has been backed up. that way, i discovered the DW folder as the culprit and excluded the sucker from being backed up. voila, backups came back to a regular size

  • Why is my iCloud camera roll backup much larger than my camera roll?

    Hi,
I recently reached my iCloud backup limit and was looking for things to get rid of to improve this, after deleting a load of photos I had a bit more space, but checking the backup of my camera roll compared to the actual camera roll size on my iPhone the two are massively different - on the phone it says 4.8GB, whereas on the backup it says 7.8GB! Is there a reason for this? I have backed up since deleting the photos by the way, so that's not the issue.
    Thanks in advance.

Never mind, I found another discussion with the answer, I just turned camera roll off in my backup and then backed up before turning it back on and backing up again - it seems the backup was keeping the old photos for some reason.

  • Time Machine says my initial backup is way larger than it actually is.

I am doing an initial backup to Time Machine. I have 810.5 GB worth of data (according to the "options" tab of Time Machine System Prefs). However, when I go to do my first backup, I get a message saying that I have 972.8 GB of data which is too much to fit on my 1TB Time Capsule.
Any ideas re: why Time Machine is calculating 162.3 GB more than I actually have?

If you download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget via this link, it will show the messages from your backup attempt.
The critical message will be, roughly, "No pre-backup thinning needed: 972.8 GB requested (including padding), xxx GB available."
The "padding" is about 20% that TM adds to the actual amount of data, for workspace it will need on the backup volume.
A general "rule of thumb" is, TM needs 2 to 3 times as much space as the data it's backing-up.
But this actually varies greatly, depending on how you use your Mac. If you frequently add/update lots of large files, then even 3 times may not be enough. If you're a light user, 1.5 times might do.
But yours is just barely larger.
    You have three options:
    1. Get a bigger drive for TM.
    2. Exclude a lot (a whole lot!) of data from TM (via TM Preferences > Options).
    3. Use a different backup app, such as a "bootable clone," that doesn't keep copies of items that have been changed or deleted.

  • IPhone Backup taking more than 2 hours...

I have had my iPhone plugged in for over 2 hours and it's still backing up. Why is this happening. And yes I've already updated to my chagrin to the iOS4. What could the problem be.

How many photos are in your iPhone's Camera Roll and how many photos were undone?
Import all photos from the Camera Roll followed by deleting all photos from the Camera Roll. If you want any or all of the imported photos available on your iPhone for viewing, you can transfer the photos from your computer to your iPhone via the iTunes sync/transfer process per the link provided. Photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone are not included with your iPhone's backup. All photos in your iPhone's Camera Roll are included with your iPhone's backup.
No iTunes content on your iPhone is included with your iPhone's backup - no music, movies, TV show, podcasts, or 3rd party apps. Removing some music from your iPhone has no effect on this, but removing all photos from your iPhone's Camera Roll should.

32k /8 would have give me at most 4000 characters. the query certainly does not have 4000 characters.
Anybody could enlighten me with the reason why oracle could not parse my query? Is there a way to insert '\n' in Pl/SQL?
    thanks!

You do in your select statement length(r.area_code) <= length(:v_orig_number), so least(length(:v_orig_number),length(area_code)) will always return
    length(r.area_code).
    substr(r.area_code,1,least(length(:v_orig_number),length(r.area_code))) will return area_code because substr(r.area_code,1,length(r.area_code)) will return r.area_code.
    SUBSTR(:v_Orig_Number, 1, LEAST(LENGTH(:v_Orig_Number), LENGTH(R.Area_Code))) will return
    SUBSTR(:v_Orig_Number, 1,length(r.area_code)).
I believe you can use select statement
    select *
    from rate
    where rate_id = cp_rate_id
    and service_id = cp_service_id
    and cp_orig_number like area_code||'%';
    Use this PL/SQL code.
    set serveroutput on
    declare
    cursor c_rats( cp_rate_id     in rate.rate_id%type
                 , cp_service_id  in rate.service_id%type
                 , cp_orig_number in varchar2)
           is
           select *
           from   rate
           where  rate_id           = cp_rate_id
           and    service_id        = cp_service_id
           and    cp_orig_number like area_code||'%';
    begin
      for r_rats in c_rats(1,2,'ABCDEFG') loop
        dbms_output.put_line(r_rats.rate_id);
      end loop;
    end;
    /Here I used rate_id = 1, service_id = 2 and orig_number = 'ABCDEF'.

  • Time machine claiming my backup is larger than the capacity of my computer

I have a Macbook, Version 10.5.8. It crashed in July but I had everything on a WD Passport external backup. Once I transferred the backup to my computer after Apple replaced the hard drive, every time I have tried to back up, time machine is unable to backup to my WD Passport because it says the backup is too large for my volume. My WD Passport's available capacity (when erased) is 111.7. The capacity of my Mac HD is 148.73 GB but I have only used 125.45 GB. In my options in time machine, I have reduced my backup to only 111.7 GB so it will fit on my external, but when I try to back up, it says the backup requires 134.1 GB and only 111.7 are available. What is going on? Where is this extra data coming from (especially when I haven't even used as much as the backup claims it requires)?
I know that my WD Passport has a smaller capacity than what I have used on my Mac HD, but even when I previously attempted to back up my entire computer, time machine claimed that the backup required 150 GB when only 111.7 were available. Basically, time machine is consistently saying that there is an extra 20 or so GBs that need to be backed up, when I have no idea where this is coming from.

  • How to restore from Time Machine when backup is larger than HDD

In an attempt to upgrade my 13 inch, 8GB 2010 MacBook Pro (750 GB HDD) from Mavericks to Yosemite, the Yosemite install was stuck at "about a minute remaining" for hours (overnight).  So I cancelled the install and tried again only to be stuck at the same spot.  I took the mac to an Apple Genius Bar to have it looked at while it was stuck at that install step.  They couldn't fix it and did a fresh install of Yosemite.  Luckily, I had backed it up about a week before, so I wasn't losing a whole lot.  I attempted to restore from the Time Machine backup using Migration Assistant (2TB external USB 3.0) of the latest backup but the estimated time to restore from backup kept climbing to more than 150 hours.  Eventually it had an error message that there wasn't enough free space on the HDD (the same 750 GB drive that my backups were from).  There was less than 100GB of free space on the HDD before attempting the upgrade.
How can I restore at least a portion of my Time Machine backup, like my Documents and Apps?  I don't even mind going back to Mavericks so that I can use my computer again!  For example, I need MS Office but I cannot use it on Yosemite if I do not first get my original backup working again so that I can unregister the current version (the product key is "lost" with my inaccessible backups!).
Most of the information I can find online is how to prepare for a proper backup, but at this point since Apple Genius did a fresh install, Time Machine has my only backup!
    Any advice would be great!
p.s. This may be useful to know:  I had several virtual machines from Parallels: Windows, Ubuntu, etc before I upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard.  Mavericks required an updated Parallels that I never got but I'm sure those VMs are hiding in my backup drive.

OS X Yosemite: Restore items backed up with Time Machine
While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.
If you need to restore from a backup of the hidden user Library folder, first select a snapshot, then press shift-command-G. A Go to Folder dialog will open. In it, you'll enter the path to the folder. The dialog will help you by automatically completing the parts of the path when you start to type them.
The path begins with slash character ("/"). Enter that. The rest of the parts will be separated by slashes.
The next part is the date and time of the current snapshot. Enter a "2", and the rest of the date should be filled in automatically. Press the right-arrow key to jump to the end of the path. Enter a slash to start the next part.
Next is the name of the volume (usually "Macintosh HD" unless you gave it a different name.) Start to type that, then jump to the end and enter a slash.
The next part is "Users", followed by a slash.
Next is your (short) user name, which is also the name of your home folder.
Finally, enter "Library", then press return. You should now be in the Library folder. From there you can get around as in the Finder.

  • Initial Time Machine backup is larger than the HD it's backing up?

    Howdy,

I don't use FileVault, but I suspect that is the culprit. Since FV can only be backed up after you log out, it might be causing the problem. I know from reading the posts that FW and TM do not play very well together. It might be calculating your home directory twice. Just a thought.

  • Why is Keynote storing images 20x larger than the original file size upon import?

In Keynote, I'll add a 150KB PNG image to a slide and the 500KB presentation goes to 3.7MB... a more than 3MB increase. I'm trying to troubleshoot large file sizes as a simple deck takes up 50-100MB on disk. Anyone know what is going on to make the file 20x larger once added to Keynote? And how I can keep the file size down? The 'Reduce File Size' option is worthless in this case... offering a less than 10% reduction on the earlier 20x amplification. Thanks

    Chris H 71 wrote:
This was originally in Keynote 09.
Yes converting an existing version 5 file in to Keynote 6 does many strange things. Any existing version 5 files I have, I continue to edit in 5. When starting a new presentation, I can use 6 without many problems at all.
I provided the files to replicate the issue to Apple support and never heard back.
Apple do not provide feedback to users on issues, they only request information from users.

  • Why are Garageband 10 audio files larger than the previous version?

I was working with Garageband 10 creating note files for my iPad app.  When I exported them as aif format, the file size was 2.1 mb.  When working with Garageband 6, the aif file sizes were 1.1mb.  Since Apple limits the file sizes of apps that are submitted to the App store, I can't use Garageband 10 with its new instruments.  Is there any way to decrease the aif file size and still keep the same format?  Thanks for any help!

QuickTime Player Pro doesn't re-compress the source codec if you use a simple "save" or "save as".
