HT204350 Migration Assistant gives me no option to transfer user account! (but everything else)

MacBook Pro 15" Retina, 2,6Ghz
from SSD over USB 3

Ok, I need to elaborate more:
I have used Migration Assistant a "100 time" for myself and helping others. Never a problem!
Now I I am trying to simply move my user account from a bootable SSD (10.6.8) to my new Powerbook 15" (10.9) using a USB 3 interface.
It will tranfer everything BUT my user account!  I do not venen get the option in the dialog.
Same when trying to transfer (old) Mac to new Mac!
Beats me!

  • After Using Migration Assistant Can't Log On With That User Account

I used Migration Assistant to move only my Settings and Users from my Power PC (User name RLE 5) to my Mac Pro.  Because of what I have read in these forums I did not migrate applications or and files/folders. I will do that manually.  After migrating I tried logging in to my user account RLE 5 on my Mac Pro, but it is telling me I am using the wrong password.  I used the same password I used on my Power PC, but with no luck.  On my Mac Pro I went into System Preferences>Accounts>RLE 5 account and changed the password.  I then rebooted and tried again.  No luck.
Can somebody help me with this problem?
    Thank you.

Hi jenaS,  sorry to hear that you're havig an issue after refresh of the system, if ur logged in using a live account it shouldnt change or remove the pin, if you are usin a local account the issue there might be in the profile on the system it might be corrupted, do you have a screen shot of the issue?

Well thank you for your honesty.  Apple requires you have to have a Mac to develop iPhone apps, ergo my foray into OS-Xland. No way around it that one except for running OSX in a VM, which would have probably saved me some quid, true enough.
BUT for those interested parties: VirtualBox has a startup script in /Library/StartupItems/VirtualBox that will prevent OSX from fully booting on the initial (and required) rEFIt boot cycle. Once I temporarily moved that out of the StartupItems rEFIt went in as expected.
FYI, the openSUSE desktop running native is a little peppier than OSX native which was a nice surprise.  Now if the Mac just had more open source software we would have a deal. (:

  • What happens to migration assistant if power is lost during transfer?

What happens to migration assistant if power is lost during transfer?

it depends on the stage of the Migration. Anyways, the data is never deleted off the old computer, so if the Migration is aborted because of a power failure, then you can simply reinstall OS X and restart the migration from scratch.

  • HT204350 Migration Assistant is NOT working

Migration Assistant is NOT working - Have tried from from a hard disk and using the Thunderbolt cable.  Keeps Looking for Source.
Any ideas?  I really want to more on to my new Mac.

That the Migration Assistant doesn't work is a KNOWN ISSUE.  Last week I got a new iMac and the old and new couldn't find one another.  I called tech support 3 times and spent I don't know how long on the phone.  They finally suggested I take them both to an Apple store, which I did today.  The Genius knew all about it - said it's a known issue.  To "resolve" it he started the old iMac in "disk mode" and then the new one could see it, but that wasn't an adequate fix: After spending over an hour moving the files, they wouldn't have been in their proper folders.  I would have had to manually file 6 years worth of pics and files!  NFW - I returned the new computer and will make do with my old one until Apple gets this right.

  • HT204350 Migration Assistant in Mavericks does not allow User account migration

Users accounts do not show up at all.

After a similar problem I found http://www.hardturm.ch/luz/2014/02/fixing-os-x-10-9-mavericks-migration-from-ext ernal-volume/ which explains that since Migration assistant logs you out, it also unmounts external disks. As AtlNCS Admin points out, they have a solution in using ssh and command line stuff to mount the needed disk remotely, but someone in the comments had a simpler solution: do not plug in the external firewire disk until after launchine Migration Assistant. So before running MA, eject the external disk that you want to migrate to the new machine (and unplug it) then start Migration Assistant and after selecting "migrate from an attached disk" THEN plug in the disk. It worked for me.

  • HT204350 Migration assistant in OS X Mavericks cannot find Time Machine disk

Well, the title says it all. My old Mountain Lion MacBook Pro had a harddrive crash and now I have installed a brand new SSD in it. It was not possible to use the Time Machine to restore the old system to the new disk during installation. So I thought, maybe it will work better after the basic system is installed. Nope. I can still activate Time Machine, but I can't regress even a single folder. And if I open the Migration Assistant it all goes well until I choose to use a Time Machine disk and then it just does not find any disk to use.
Of all the things you would expect from a specialised backup utility is that it should be possible to use for restoring a computer. If it isn't then why the **** have I been saving **** to it? I could have used the disk for a plain copy backup, a backup I could use.
I have seen a hundred of these threads when trying to find an answer. Has anyone found something that works? Has ******* Apple ******* fixed the problem somewhere?

In the sidebar of a Finder window, select the icon representing your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) At the top level of the volume are folders with these names, among others:
    Applications
    Library
    System
Enter Time Machine and select the most recent snapshot, which is behind the frontmost window. Are those folders present in the snapshot?

  • HT204350 Migration assistant is frustrating

So I have used Time machine to try and migrate data over with 3 seperate hard drives, all 3 of which are not seen with my new 2013 MBPr from my mid-2012 MBA.
I try to use the firewire cable and migration assistant...it goes great 1/2 way and then switches to wireless and asks me to plug in a firewire cable for faster transfers.
I only have 1 firewire / network cable adapter therefore can't do that.  This is super frustrating and I can't seem to find answers anywhere.  I'm pretty close to shipping the MBPr back as it is such a small upgrade...Ideas?
Both machines are Mavericks, fully updated.  2 drives were Western Digital, 1 was Seagate.

You have 3 drives 2 Macs & one Firewire cable.
All three drives fail migrating at some point. The common parts are Mavericks & the single Firewire cable.
I'd suggest you find another cable to test, if that also fails you can assume it is 10.9 (or something else installed).
How are you running Migration Assistant? Is it after a clean install & you have simply booted to 10.9 or are you trying to do it all from the installer ?
How did you install 10.9? Did you erase the HD & install or upgrade over an older system?
P.S. check the "More Like This" sidebar on the right ->

  • HT204350 migration assistant mavericks.

I am trying to migrate to a new imac using migration assistant. I connected the old machine and new via ethernet cable. When the files began to transfer, the indicator reported over 400 hours to transfer. Suspecting the files were transferring via WiFi rather than ethernet cable, after over an hour with litte change in the counter, I disconnected the WiFi source and, sure enough, the machines stopped communicating. I also noted that Migration Assistant was telling me that connecting an ethernet cable would speed things up but the cable was already connected.
I stopped the transfer, switched off the airport and tried again, following to the letter Apple's Mavericks Migration Assistant instructions. I have been watching both machines search for each other for going on half an hour now and cannot understand why these machines are not seeing each other. Both are running Mavericks.

I noticed that the old imac's network preferences indicated that the ethernet port was "inactive". I bought a new cable, plugged the ethernet cable from the modem into the old imac to "reactivate" the port. Then reconnected the two machines via ethernet and ran Migration Assistant again and the migration went fine. I'm not sure which step caused the desired effect but that's what I did.

  • Migration Assistant created multiple users.  After receiving my new MacBook Pro and seeing that Migration Assistant would take 40  hrs to transfer my data from my PC, I decided to do it incrementally - now my info is under 3 different users.  Ideas?

First time Mac User.  Just got my MacBook Pro 2 days ago.  Uppon setup, I founf that Migration Assistant would take more than 40 hours to transfer my data from my PC.  Thinking that I was taking a smart approach, I decided to break the transfer into smaller parts performing them when the PC was not needed.  What I've ended up doing was migrating my data into 3 diferent user's on the Mac.  So now I have an extensive iTunes library and contacts under one user, all of "my documents" under another user, and all of my pictures under a 3rd user.  Anyone know how to get all my data over to one user and then get rid of the other user names?

Erase the drive, reinstall Mountain Lion, migrate using Setup Assistant.
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
To restore wait until the installation is completed and the computer restarts. You should restart to the Setup Assistant where you'll be given an opportunity to restore directly from your Time Machine backup. Be patient since the restore will take so long. If your backup drive can run on FireWire instead of USB then use FireWire instead. It will cut that time down substantially.

  • Yosemite setup, migration assistants and timemachine restore didn't transfer ANY files to SSD

    Hi,
I'm at a total loss after 2 days of trying to upgrade my hard disk to an SSD in my Macbook Pro.
I have tried Yosemite Setup assistant, the Migration Assistant in Utilities and Restore from Time Machine.
All 3 processes run for 5 hours and say they are transferring information with a progress bar and finish saying my mac is ready to use, but none of these processes actually transfer a single file.
At the end of 2 days, they have just created a new empty user. No user files, no applications, nothing.
Please can you tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Here is what I did in detail
    17" late 2011 MBP
    original 750gb HDD is full.
bought a Samsung 850 EVO 1TB SSD and a caddy to replace the optical drive
Left original HDD in place so I am transferring files between 2 internal drives (HDD->SSD)
installed the SSD and formatted default option Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)
    rebooted into repair partition (10.9)
Installed OS X on the SSD
Setup assistant told me it could not transfer data because the HDD had a newer OS
Skipped transfer and installed 10.10.2 Yosemite on SSD
Yosemite successfully installed and working on SSD
Opened Migration assistant on SSD in Utilities and selected everything to transfer from internal HDD to SSD
Migration Assistant runs for 5 hours and says it is complete - but not a single new file has been transferred onto the SSD!!
Read that Migration Assistant is less reliable than Setup Assistant
Follow a guide to Boot into Safe Mode on SSD, delete user folders and setupdone file to trigger setup again.
Restart SSD and use Setup Assistant as though new installation to transfer files from HDD.
Setup Assistant runs for 5 hours  transferring files from internal HDD and says it is complete - but not a single new file has been transferred onto the SSD!!
Reboot into repair partition (10.10) on SSD
Erase SSD and install Yosemite again
Setup Assistant runs for 5 hours transferring files from internal HDD and says it is complete - but not a single new file has been transferred onto the SSD!!
Reboot into repair partition (10.10) on SSD
Erase SSD and install Yosemite again
Setup Assistant runs for 5 hours and says it is complete - but not a single new file has been transferred onto the SSD!!
Reboot into repair partition (10.10) on SSD
check HDD - repair disk found B-tree node and leaf count errors fixed disk OK and repair permissions some needed fixing
    check SSD - repair permissions
Reboot into repair partition (10.10) on SSD
Erase SSD and install Yosemite again
This time connect an external HDD with Time Machine backup.
Setup Assistant runs for 5 hours transferring files from external HDD Time Machine Backup and says it is complete - but not a single new file has been transferred onto the SSD!!
2 days later I feel as empty as my new SSD: 981 GB free of 999GB
    Please help
    Thanks

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply
I just used Carbon Copy Cloner while waiting and it seems to have worked, except it cannot create the restore partition.
If I try again using Restore in Disk Utility in the 10.9 Recovery Partition, will it create the Recovery Partition on the SSD as well?
I was surprised that having installed Yosemite (10.10.2) on the original HDD, that the restore partition on that volume was 10.9 - how can I get my data and a 10.10 recovery partition onto the SSD?
    Thanks

  • Without Migration Assistant, what is recommend method to move user directory from a Mac to local home on SLS?

I need to move a user's home directory contents from an old Mac to a "Home Folder for a Local User" on Snow Leopard Server (SLS). I both the old Mac and an external drive, which was used to make a TimeMachine backup of the old Mac. Since SLS does not have Migration Assistant, what is the recommended method to a user's data to SLS home folders?
    BillK

Sorry...not trying to be cryptic, but any of the methods you mentioned for copying would work. Simply mounting the sharepoint and copying the data would work. I didn't mention a specific method, because I wasn't sure what was available to you.
As to the permissions, once the data is copied, if you are moving form one Mac to another, and not using the same existing OD on both, the owner may be the same (depending on the name you use on the accounts) but joesmith on one Mac will not transfer permissions to joesmith on another Mac. So you will need to make sure the owner of all the data is set to the correct user on the new Mac. Using the command line, you could navigate to the home folder and use this command to make the owner of the files the correct user
    sudo chown -R nameofuser *
nameofuser would be the name on the account that you want to give ownership to
    then sudo chmod -R u=rwx *
to make sure the owner has full access to everything in his/her home folder.
    Hope that's more helpful
    Jeff
