HT204382 Quicktime 10.1 says I need a codec, yet Quicktime 10.2 plays it

I have * .mpg files that Quicktime version 10.1 (501.29) [OSX 10.7.5 (Lion) on my mac-mini] complains it can't open the file "because a required codec isn't available" (It would be helpful if quicktime reported what media format/code it THINKS the .mpg file is, but….)
If I use "MPlayer OSX Extended" (Lion), it plays the file, but it doesn't allow me to access all features, such as closed captioning… Inspector tells me the file format is "TS", that is all.  This has been a barely acceptable work around for about a year now.
If I use "VLC" (Lion) to try to play the file, after a long time it displays a frame and then stops. If I view  VLC:Window --> Media info - -> Codec Details: Stream 0 reports: Codec: Mpeg 1/2 Video (mpgv), Resolution: 704x480, Frame Rate: 59.940060, Decode Format: Planar 4:2:0 YUV; There are 7 more streams, 3 are audio, 4 are closed captioning.
However, if I use Quicktime 10.2 (603.6); OSX 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion) on my macbook air, it plays the file! (but it  does one video track and just one audio track)  Quicktime:Window -> Show Movie Inspector reports Format: MPEG-2 Video, 704x480 (640x480), and 3 audio tracks, FPS: 29.97
I have tried to figure out containers and codecs for some time now and my head spins. If QT 10.2 plays the file but QT 10.1 (the latest version for Lion) doesn't, is it a defect?
The file is actually a recording of a stream broadcast coming from a HDHomeRun tuner, essentially the raw TV broadcast stream of a 480i digital signal.
I am posting this hoping to help those that are having trouble with Quicktime. Nothing that I have seen in the Apple documentation informs me Quicktime 10.2 on Mountain Lion supports more codecs than 10.1 on Lion.
I have seen a lot of posters having problems with Quicktime and Lion; While I can't guarantee updating to Mountain Lion and Quicktime 10.2 will help with your problem, it may be worth a try. Since VLC can't play the files, I may file a bug report with them. Should I file a bug report with Apple? How?

I don't know if Quicktime's requirements are the same as iMovie (since that uses Quicktime), but one thing in your post stood out:
On your 10.1 version, you post that it reports a 60 fps (frames per second) rate.
On your 10.2 version, you post that it reports a 30 fps rate.
iMovie cannot handle 60 fps. As I said, I don't know if Quicktime is similar, but you might want to check out that angle.

H.264 video should be supported by your basic Snow Leopard operating system. The DVCPRO HD family of codecs is part of the Apple "Pro" codecs package which is normally installed as part of a "Pro" video editing suite installer or contemporaneously installed separately as part of one of the newer pro editing apps like FCPX. if you already have one of these pro suites or apps installed or available, then re-install the correct codec package that is missing. If not, you will need to purchase a Pro suite or app to be able to install the required codec package.

Hmm . . . comes with a Utility MPEG2 Component ML app with no explanation of what it's for?
The utility app is an "assistant PKG installer." It allows Lion and Mountain Lion users to install the older QT MPEG-2 Playback Component installer PKG file which is not allowed to run on its own under Lion or Mountain Lion since these operating systems already have a QT X only MPEG-2 component embedded in the QT embedded structure. Without this utility you would have to either copy the component from an older system to your Lion or Mountain Lion system, use Pacifist for installation, or manually open the PKG contents and transfer the component to the appropriate component folder.
As to your "discussion" regarding the playback of AVI file types, there are really only two strategies here:
    1) You can add component support so that QT can play the files natively or
    2) You can convert the file contents to compression formats that are natively compatible with the unmodified QT component configuration.
Each user should decide for his or her own self which approach best suits their needs for a particular source file. In most cases, conforming the system's codec component configuration to play the source file directly results in higher video quality since no transcoding takes place but this strategy will not work if a codec which is required is not available for the user's operating system. On the other hand, converter utilities tend to support more built-in codecs and are easier to use since the user does not have to concern him or herself with the nature of the particular source compression formats but at the risk of some potential loss in visual quality. As to what converter to use, once again this is a matter of personal choice. In the case of commercial converters like iSkysoft, the codecs are built in while MPEG Streamclip accesses the host operating system's QT codec component configuration. I personally prefer the free HandBrake app for AVI, MKV, TS, MTS, and M2TS conversions since it has an exceptionally full-featured X.264 GUI with some user options that 97% of users are likely to never use.

  • HT3775 my mac wont play a quicktime movie file, it keeps saying i need a codec and then bringing me to this page. there is no links on where to get this codec? help!!!

I try play this quicktime movie file and then it says i do not have the required codec and the only thing i can press is "ok" or "tell me more" and then it just brings me to this page, it says nothing about how to obtain this certain codec. I need this to work on my macbook! Its not the video file because it works perfectly fine on the iMacs at University. Help me out, please!

Quicktime has it's limitations and can't, natively, play certain video formats.
Try VLC.  It should be able to play anything you throw at it.

  • I drive a PowerBookG4 (10.4.11) with QuickTime (7.6.4). Need either update of QuickTime or alternative software. Any thoughts. Help

I have a powerbook g4 (10.4.11) with quicktime player (7.6.4). Most internet media play in fits and starts -- not smooth -- no doubt due to the age of my computer and/or quicktime. I can't afford a new computer so need either a software update of quicktime or download of an alternative app that will play smoothly on my computer.
    Help.
    (And thanks)

If the difficulty is with streaming video off the internet, the PowerBook is the wrong computer. While still strong in many respects, streaming video, in some cases requires an Intel processor, and in other cases just won't play smoothly. This is, unfortunately, not a new issue.
One option you might try is to sign up for Youtube HTML5 video. With OS X Tiger and Opera 10.6 you can see if HTML5 delivery of video works better for you. Go to http://www.youtube.com/html5 and Opera can be downloaded from http://www.opera.com/browser/download/?os=mac&ver=10.61&local=y
In terms of an alternative app to play video, you might try VLC at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html

I can't open my AVI files and see video, I only hear the audio with a black screen. My format for my dash cam is H.264. When I try and open my files the messeage I get is

  • Downloaded Prometheus, won't play on Apple TV, says computer needs authorization, but it is authorized. Plays on the iMac though.

Have tried all the support ideas no results.

I just posted on the same issue.
The error msg is bogus. In my case, the problem is that the AppleTV (2nd gen) cannot play the 720p HD version.
iTunes actually downlads both HD and SD versions. I deleted the the entry from my iTunes libary listing, but kept the file by NOT moving to trash. I then added just the SD version. It plays correctly.
But I paid for HD to view on my TV, so I am not totally happy about this. HD is of no interest on my smaller computer screens...
This looks like the HD version is not encoded correctly.

  • Do i need a codec for avi files to play in flv

i have no mpeg moves files on my computer so when it says browse for your flv file it shows me nothing right.

i have to have flv files already encoded for them to view on my computer right.
If you have a registered version of Flash Professional, it comes with Adobe Media Encoder which you can use to create your FLV files. The following article should help
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/quickstart/video_encoder.html
If you don't have Flash Professional, there are other encoders you can use.  Riva FLV Encoder works pretty well on AVI, MPEG, Quicktime, WMV. View the online-help for a list of supported codecs.

I can't open iTunes, dialogue says I need QuickTime 7.5.5, but when I download the upgrade it won't install over my QuickTime Pro 7.2.1. How do I upgrade QT so it'll be compatible with my iTunes?

    BDA and TMM,
Excellent thanks. I've got iTunes working now, after downloading the latest version of iTunes by clicking Software Update from the Apple menu. And I downloaded QuickTime 7.7 from the links you recommended, BDA. For some reason I'd been unable to locate the latest QT for Leopard no matter how hard I tried—it was probably staring me in the face all the while.
    Much appreciated,

  • Once I installed FF 7.0.1, all websites with Quicktime videos will not play. Each page says I need to install QT. I'm on a Mac, OSX Lion. Everything worked in FF 6.*

I'm using a Mac, OSX Lion. I've been using Firefox for years. Lately I've been using version 6.**, meaning I keep the version up to date as updates come out. Quicktime videos have never been an issue. But, once I installed FF version 7.0.1, websites now tell me I need to install QT. This makes no sense. Worked in FF 6, doesn't work in FF 7. Videos on Apple's website won't play in FF 7.0.1. Says I need to install QT. Makes no sense, QT is part of the OS X Lion install.

I had the same problem with divx also and here is a solution that will work for both first install the firefox add on Add-on Compatibility Reporter that can be found here
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/
next restart firefox then install the add on unplug that is found here
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/unplug/
once that is done you might need to make sure that unplug is enabled. if done correctly after its setup you should be able to use the web player you have installed in windows to stream the videos you find on the net.
