HT204400 Apple TV drops strong wifi signal.

Everything up to date with reliable 50Mbps internet, Apple TV works with Cat 5 cable, but drops streams frequently and lags airplay when connected wirelessly. It is 10 feet away from the router. why? Restarted multiple times, checked software version multiple times, restarted router, restarted MBP, it just won't stay connected. Is there a fix coming for this?

I'm not having a problem with the speed of the internet, I'm having a problem with it staying connected... yes I know it's a wifi issue that's obvious... thanks for pointing that out.
Nohting for Apple to fix? hmmmm, well Two Samsung phones never drop the signal, a Samsung TV never drops the signal, a Samsung Tab 2 never drops the signal, an iPad Mini never drops the signal, a Macbook Pro never drops the signal.... but for some reason the Apple TV drops the signal 20+ times during one movie and it won't stream airplay.
Not to mention multiple other posts complaining about it staying connected even using Apple Airport.
So hopefully there are other people who will read this post that can respond with more than just pointing out the obvious. I mean seriously theres gotta be something that can be fixed or something because thus far Apple products have been impressive, this doesn't seem to fit their M.O.

Theoretically yes. It will really depend on your situation. Please review the following Apple Support article to understand what is possible with the AirPort base stations and post back with any questions or help in setting up your extended network.

  • My Apple TV has no Wifi Signal

I have been using Apple TV's airplay almost everyday using Wifi.  Suddenly, there was no Wifi signal from Apple TV at all.    Other machines like xbox, bluray, and TV have no problem and all have strong signal. Apple TV shows zero Wifi signal at all and I cannot even see its wifi Mac Address anymore. I have to connect the machine to my router using an ethernet cable so it can connect to my network.
Is it broken? What should I do?  Any help please?

hi, sorry for the late reply. the wifi suddenly dissappeared, so I plugged in the ethernet to update the software, reset, and/ or restore.  I did everything.  And still no luck after removing the ethernet cable in between changes.  The ATV got no wifi signal, no wifi address at all.  the status are all N/A.
I'm returning it to Apple tomorrow.
    Thanks for all the comments.

  • My ipad cannot access Internet although I have strong wifi signal

My ipad cannot access Internet suddenly although I have strong wifi signal & my iphone, macbook and other laptops can connect to the wifi network. I tried to reset the network settings, connect to itunes, check the router. but it doesn't work. Can anyone help me please to solve this problem? Thank you very much

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Have iPad 2 and also iPad. Why does old iPad get stronger wifi signal?

Why does  my new iPad 2 have a low wifi signal, while sitting next to first iPad that has strong wifi signals?  All settings are the same.

That's unlikely since the iOS and hardware in this area should be identical.
If you are having reception problems take your iPad2 to an Apple store for some testing.

For your issue - Solution may be found if you search in the "More Like This" section over in the right column.
Change your router channel.  Sometimes this is all you will have to do.
Power cycling the router.  Read the router's user manual or contact their tech support for instructions.
    System Preferences/Internet & Network/Network
    Unlock the padlock
    Locations:  Automatic
    Highlight Airport
    Click the Assist Me button
In the popup window click the Diagnostic button.
System Preferences/Network- Unlock padlock.  Highlight Airport.  Network Name-select your name.  Click on the Advanced button.  Airport/Preferred Networks-delete all that is not your network.
Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined."  Click the OK button and lock the padlock.  Restart your computer.

I bought the Airport Extreme because I thought it would increase the range of the WiFi signal in my house. I have a DSL modem (also Wifi) and there are parts of the house that do not seem to have a strong Wifi signal. The Airport Extreme does not seem to be increasing my Wifi signal strength? Any thoughts on what I could be doing wrong? I am able to connect to it, etc. Just thought the strength would be better.

The broadcast power of all wireless routers and devices is limited by law.....and all manufacturers run their routers full blast.....so the relative signal strength of wireless routers from one manufacturer to another will tend to be remarkably similar.....despite the fancy advertising claims.
You may want to consider adding another AirPort Extreme to "extend" the signal strength in your home. If you decide to do this, the "extending" Extreme would normally need to be located at a point that is approximately half the distance from your "main" AirPort Extreme and the general area that needs more wireless coverage.

  • HT4199 My 2010 MBP 15 keeps dropping the wifi signal or not initializing at all.  I have been to Genius bar 5 times with no fix...help

After 5 trips to the Genius bar, my MBP 15" mid 2010 still drops any wifi connection (except for the one at the Apple Store) sometimes it will not even connect at all except by ethernet.  I travel and use many different wi fi systems.  This has just started in the last month.  I am running Lion 10.7.4.  can anyone out there help since Apple can't?  This is th very last Apple I will ever purchase.

Looks then it's either of 2 things.
An interference issue at home or...
    Your location settings...
Sometimes when moving around constantly to different locations, funny things can start to happen due to the way the WiFi tries to connect and guess as to the best network to try to connect to, etc.
Next time it starts to drop off, go to your preferred network list, and delete everything there.
If it still persists, we can try a dozen other tricks.
Or, we could simply pull the entire configuration folder right now, then reboot and see what hapens.

  • IPad and iPhone 4 and new 5s drop connection with airport express. This just started recently after working fine for a year. PC does not drop. Wifi signal fine. Help?

Streaming music with airport express and Apple TV to 2 different systems. No problem with Apple TV. iPad and iPhone 4 and new 5s keep dropping their connection to airport express. Airport express connection to wifi appears to be fine. No dropping by windows PC. This just started recently after working fine for a year. Help?

What does any of this have to do with the Apple TV?

  • All (only) Apple devices dropping home wifi. What do I do?

All my Apple devices (2006 iMac, 2012 iMac, Apple TV and son's iPhone 4 - when he's over) dropping Wi-Fi.  What gives? Window 7, Window 8, Android tablets, Android phone, HP network Printer and even blackberry playbook and phones have no issues.  Only the Apple devices!!  Yes we have a lot of devices here but never more than 4 are ever here so not all devices are working at the same time.
I'm at my wit's end.  It first happened when I pulled out my (never had any issue with) 2006 iMac for my son to use while he's staying with us.  As I was updating everything, it kept dropping off the network.  Now, my 2012 iMac has started doing it too as well as my (3r gen) Apple TV.  I can't even watch one TV show (42 minutes-'ish) without having to reset 4 or 5 times.
Why only Apple!!!  I have my 3TB digital collection connected up to my iMac and often watch movies from (i.e.) the bedroom using a Win 7 Laptop hooked to a TV pulling the file from it.  Never used to be an issue but now I can hardly ever connect to it because it dropped off the network.
Can anyone give me actual USEFUL information on how to fix this?

Oh.. and Drew... I have no idea what you're talking about.  I have no clue as to how to "record" nor what "deauth" is  :-(  though, among the people I know, I am, at times, the most knowledgeable computer geek I know but I really only know very little.  Sorry.
    It's not the first time
Deauth packets are used to tell a device to 'get of the network'. They don't require an authenticated connection, so anyone with a wifi card can use them to spoil your day. There are Linux tools that have the ability to target Apple devices by MAC address. It's tough to test unless you can run an app to see if there are lots of deauths being sent to your devices (I haven't tried on OS X, hence my question to the other users). There should be a way to get better logging of wifi disconnects on OS X. This covers it iirc…
    http://hak5.org/episodes/episode-706
Since Android is also disconnecting too it's probably something else. You'd need to check for overlapping channels from other networks & do all the regular wifi debugging. iStumbler can help you see other networks (& overlapping channels).
It appears the wireless diagnostics has the ability to help too, I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned…
    About Wireless Diagnostics
Read through that it should give you some tools to see what is happening.

  • Strong Wifi signal but SLOOOWWW connection? Help!

    Dear Folks,
I'm getting terrible throughput to the outside world over my home Wifi network with the iPad. Yeah it's DSL, but the performance is far, far below normal for that. Both my Macs are connecting wirelessly just fine. But most of the efforts to get online via the iPad (Safari, iTunes store, App Store, etc.) just time out before completion, or with a screen only partially loaded.
Ain't a signal strength thing. I'm getting three "arcs" and I'm sitting in the same room with the wireless modem. No RF problems here, bucko! Ironically, my neighbor has an unprotected Wifi network and even though I only get one "arc" of signal strength linking to it, that performs great. Data throughput is plenty fast, no problem logging into websites, app store, etc. via her network.
Clearly I have a config problem that is specific to my network and the iPad, since other computers and other networks work fine. But I can't figure out what.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Ctein

    Dear Jim,
Thanks for your help-- here's additional info:
    1) I don't know what service class and carrier my neighbor has. I mentioned it only to note that this demonstrated that signal strength was not the obvious problem. (Aside from the fact I'm sitting 1.5 meters from the router.)
    2) Run off my MacBook Pro on the home network, speedtest reported 1.3Mb/sec download speed, 300Kb/sec upload speed and 119 msec ping. IOW, typically mediocre DSl, but serviceable. The speedtest app can't even procure a server list on the iPad via my home network, and it times out (this happens with both the normal DNS of 192.168.1.1 and after I added OpenDNS of 208.67.222.222). If I log into the neighbor's network with speedest, the iPad connects fine, reporting download and upload speeds ca 2Mb/sec.
A service like the Google Maps app can function, but it loads maps VERY slowly. Safari simply times out 9 times out of 10.
    3) Router is an 802.11g -- Netgear WGR614 v6.
    4) DHCP settings on the iPad are
    IP Address: 192.168.1.3
    Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    Router and DNS: both 192.168.1.1
(these are consistent with what the router reports)
    Router settings are
Get IP Address dynamically from ISP
    Get DNS automatically from ISP
broadcast on channel 7 in both g & b modes.
    WEP enabled
    5) Latest OS-- 3.2.1, but I was having the same problem with OS 3.2.
    Any clues here?
The help is much appreciated! I just hate this network stuff-- still makes me feel stupid every time something goes wobbly.
    pax / Ctein

  • Even in a strong wifi signal environment, my iPad has begun to load very slowly.

    This is a recent occurrence.

    1. Close all inactive apps in the Task Bar. Double-click the Home button and hold apps down for a second or two and tap the minus sign to close app.
    2. Try a reset. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple Logo

  • Has anyone had issues with iPhone 5 on wifi, mines keeps dropping the wifi signal.

Has anyone else experience this issue?

I have had that issue with no text alert sound and also with calls, no ring for the call but then I got a missed call or voicemail alert. Never had the blurry lines though. Right after I upgraded, the ring changed to a very short version of what I have selected and only rang once, other times not at all. This was a very big problem since I am working from my car most of the day and get a lot of calls and texts.  I did a reset with home button and button on the top as described in a post somewhere here on the forum and the problems stopped. So far so good. Give reset a try!

  • IPad 3 keeps dropping wifi signal

To regain connection I just have to go on the wifi settings page (not even turning the wifi on and off) which then gives me the signal again. Ive tried resetting network settings, but nothing works.
