HT204406 Hard Drive wiped out - Can I rebuild the library with iTunes Match?

My hard drive and external back of my entire music library (15,000+ songs) were completely deleted. I would like to recover this in some way other than loading each single CD one at a time again. I have iTunes Match so I was wondering if there is someway for me to rebuild my library via download from the cloud or something so that I can maintain a new physical copy of the files on my computer again? Or will I have to do this from my iPod?

Hello Mclary101,
Thanks for your question! Im sorry to hear about your computer but it sounds like you had iTunes Match turned on before this happened. You should be able to use this article to get your music in iTunes Match re downloaded:
iTunes: How to add a computer or iOS device to iTunes Match
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4913
To add a computer to iTunes Match
Open the latest version of iTunes on the computer you intend to add. You can download the latest version of iTunes here.
Sign in with the Apple ID you use with iTunes Match.
Choose Store > Turn On iTunes Match.
Click the Add This Computer button.
When prompted, enter your Apple ID password.
iTunes will automatically begin scanning your computer's library for matches.
A status indicator will allow you to track progress. You may also manually pause and resume the process at any time by clicking the Stop or Start button.
Once iTunes has completed matching and uploading your iTunes library, your music in iCloud will be integrated into your local music library. A download button will appear to the right of any content that you have in iCloud that doesn't already exist on your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Regards,
Sterling

I'm trying to put movies onto my hard  drive but i can't put the files with the same name onto the hard drive , finder won't let me change the name. What am i doing wrong?

Make a new folder and put them in that different folder. Then the names can be the same as others already on your drive.

  • Hard drive wiped out - can i restore songs from my ipod back to my computer

My computer hard drive is completly wiped out and my itunes back up with all my music is gone.
Is there a way to take what is on my ipod and transfer back to my new computer?

    Check out the instructions/suggestions here.
    Music from iPod to computer.
There's also another method. I've successfully tested this across several different Windows PCs.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), there's Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
The above methods will depend on what version of iTunes you are running.
I can't vouch that any of them will work with iTunes version 7.

  • Hard Drive Wiped Out - Can I Save My iTunes?

My hard drive is going to be wiped clean, icnluding all my iTunes files. Can I "reverse sync" from my iPod nano once I reinstall iTunes or will I have to back up externally using a flash card? If I do backup externally, will a simple transfer to a flash card work?

If you know you are going to be wiping the drive before hand, then I would say definitely try to make a backup of your iTunes folder now just in case. But to answer your specific question about iPod to computer transfer...

  • Deleted my music files to make room on hard drive. How do I get them back with iTunes Match now?

I ran out of room and since I paid for iTunes Match I thought I could delete my files but still have the music. Now the luttle clouds are gone from my library and when I try to play a song it tells me it can't find the file. How do I get the clouds back and the option to re-download just what I want?

I actually deleted my backup :-) That's the problem. But thanks.
I've managed to get some back but via a slightly different method.
Because the files weren't there, when I deleted them from my library they actually disappeared from the list.... So I created a new library (backed up my original one) and then synched that with Match so that all the files appeared. I'm just going through the ones I'm missing clicking 'download' and then when they're all back on my hard drive I'll revert to the previous Library which will hopefully pick up all of the recovered files.
    Bingo!

  • HT1351 I recently had my hard drive wiped out by a virus and had to reinstall windows and itunes. When i hooked up my ipod it didnt automatically sync my songs on my ipod with the library. How do I do this manually?

I recently had my hard drive wiped out by a virus and had to reinstall windows and itunes. When I hooked up my ipod it did not transfer my songs from my ipod to my itunes library. How do I do this?

iTunes syncing is generally in one direction only, from the computer's iTunes library to the iPod.  You cannot use iTunes to transfer song files from iPod to computer (except for songs purchsed from the iTunes Store).
However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.  (The CNET article seems to be popular.)
Once the song files are on your computer's drive, you can add them to your new iTunes library.  (Going forward, you should use a backup strategy, and include your iTunes data in what gets backed up.  Then, you would be able to recover your complete iTunes library, including things like playlists and ratings.)

  • My iMac Seagate 1T hard drive crashed. I replaced it with a Western Digital 1T hard drive. Where can I get the Lion OS?

My iMac Seagate 1T hard drive crashed. I replaced it with a Western Digital 1T hard drive. Where can I get the Lion OS?
The iMac comes up with a ? in a folder, even after starting with Option/Command/R keys pressed.
    Please help.

Call Apple to purchase replacement discs or order a copy of Snow Leopard from Apple's Online Store. Follow these instructions:
Drive Preparation and Install Snow Leopard
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. When completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard. Once you boot from Snow Leopard you should open Software Update and install all the available updates required. After you complete this and restart the computer open the App Store application in the Dock or Applications folder.
    8. Sign into the App Store with your Apple ID and password. Purchase and download Lion.
    9. After Lion's installer downloads, install Lion.

The iTunes application should be installed on the system drive. You may need to repair iTunes to fix that error regarding a missing .exe.
To organize your library properly see Make a split library portable.
If you don't have a working version of the library that can be transformed into a portable shape I have tools and techniques that can repair the broken links.

  • PC hard drive wiped out, how do I transfer to new one?

Our home PC (running Windows XP) had to have it's hard drive replaced, therefore I lost everything I had on itunes (I know, I know, I should have had it all backed up!). I spoke to a great guy on the helpline, who told me how to at least get all my purchased back on once I'd reinstalled itunes, but not all my purchases were put back on, including songs and some movies.
First question: How do I solve this? I obviously don't want to have to purchase the missing items again.
Second question: The very helpful itunes guy on the phone prompted me through the steps to get my purchased music off my ipod, which I vaguely remember how to do, but can someone please remind me?! I have changed itunes on the PC to manually manage, so my ipod doesn't get wiped when I plug it in.
Third question: I now have a laptop (running Windows Vista) and have installed itunes on it, but I would like to use this now as my main 'computer' as it were, instead of the PC. Can anyone tell me how to go about this? I'm frightened of plugging in my ipod and wiping everything off!
If anyone can help I will be eternally grateful!!! Thanks!

  • How to stop iTunes creating a new library on my hard drive when it can't find the one I have created and told it to use on an external drive?

I have quite alot of music etc so to save hard drive space I have created my iTunes library on an external hard drive. If I ever accidentaly open iTunes when that external hard drive isn't attached iTunes makes a whole new library from scratch on my computers hard drive. I find this highly frustrating as I often open Itunes to find no music as it have changed librarys and I have to re-load my actual library: very frustraiting and time consuming.
I would like to know if it is possible to lock iTunes some how to stop it from changing folders when it can'f find the library, or atleast give me a warning that it can't find the library before creating a whole new one????

Tunes works through a database file which has a list of your tracks.  When you click on a track it looks up in the database which file it needs to play, then plays the file.  If something breaks this link then you get !  The two main ways to get ! are to move a file from where iTunes expects it to be, or to delete it altogether.  I don't know which has happened in your case.  You can try using Spotlight to find a file for the one referred to in a broken link.  If the files have been moved then they need to be moved back.  If they were deleted completely you will have to restore them from a backup or download them again from the iTunes Store and rebuild your library.

  • HT204406 My HDD crashed which held all of my music.  Can I recover the music from iTunes Match and download it back to a new HDD?

My HDD crashed and it contained all of the music from which iTunes and iMatch pulled files from.  Is there a way to recover the music from iTunes Match and download it back to my new HDD?

My computer HDD did not crash only my external drive with the music files.  I have not had to reinstall iTunes software.  The iTunes libarary is still complete and shows the complete list of music.  I have also ran Update iTunes Match and all of the music is on the cloud.
I cannot play the music from iTunes that is on the cloud, however the music I purchased from iTunes did download and it will plan from my computer.
The matched or uploaded music is what will not download and I can't find a command that allows me to download from Match.
Sorry if I'm not being very clear, however I do really appreciate your help and suggestions.
