HT204655 Photos library eats up huge amount of disk space

After upgrading to 10.10.3, I imported my photos into Photos app. All my photos are stored on a partition (HFS+ filesystem was applied) other than where OS X is installed, the size in total of this folder is about 36 giga. I checked off the option for copying the items into Photos library before importing, however, by finishing the import, the Photos library showed a size of 33 giga, the resources/modelresource folder contributed the highest proportion. I checked into that folder, found all files imported successfully were copied here. What should I do to solve the problem? Thanks!

Just to add a couple of suggestions:
If you already have the media from your camera saved to your computer, you can check Leave Files in Place in the Import dialog. FCPX will create pointers to your media and won't copy them to your event.
Depending on the format of your clips and the complexity of your project, you may not need to create Optimized and/or Proxy media.
And as digibudll said, deleting renders when your project is finished and delivered will often save a lot of space. That can be done from within the application.

  • My (empty!) photo library is using 2,6 GB of space

Earlier, on iOS 5, I synced my whole iPhoto-library from my Macbook to my iPhone 4 (32 GB). It was about 14.000 pictures, and used up almost 16 GB of space on my phone.
After the upgrade to IOS 6, my pictures got messed up. All my Events and Albums were gone, but every single picture was still on the device.
I connected the iPhone to iTunes, told it to NOT sync pictures (and delete those on the device). And ran it.
After that, I turned off Photo Stream on my iPhone.
And at last, I manually deleted those few pictures which was left on the phone.
I now confirm that its completly empty. Not a single picture left on the phone.
I have also rebooted a couple of times.
But still, my Photo Library uses about 2,6 GB of space on my phone! (According to whats shown in Settings -> General -> Use -> Pictures and Camera)
    Its broken down to this:
    Cameraroll : 0 byte
    Photo Library : 2,6 GB
    Photo Stream: 5,0 kB
(Sorry if not all menu items are written correctly - I use a different language than english)
So, whats using 2,6 GB on my phone? And how do I free that space?!?

    Hello violetsareblue,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
To help resolve this issue where your iPhone is showing storage space being taken up by photos that do not exist, I'd like you to please follow the directions below to reinstall iOS on your iPhone.
Make sure that you have iTunes 12 or later on your computer.
Put your device in recovery mode.
When you get the option to restore or update, select Update. This will reinstall iOS without erasing your data.

  • My program on Solaris 9 uses huge amounts of swap space

    hi,
i have written a program that uses very little memory but seems to use huge amounts of swap space in increments of 1.4GB. The initial install of the Solaris 9 only allocated 500MB of swap for 4GB of Memory. The swap space has now been increased to 16GB but the program seems to use more swap space.
The program uses an api to attach to up to 100 agents and (the peice i wrote) registers a callback to handle events from the agents, a small amount of memory is allacated to hold details of each agent but no more.
Can anyone shed any light on this as this program does run on other platforms with any issues.
    sdarcy7

are you sure you are release memory, what language are you using?
you can reboot the system and follow the memory process using vmstat and swap -l, after that run your program only one time, and run the command again so the memory after should be the same that the initial before you run your process, if not , you program is collecting memory and is not releasing it.
    Good luck,

  • How to limit the amount of disk space Time Machine will use?

On Yosemite, how do you limit the amount of disk space Time Machine will use?
I'm using a Seagate Goflex Home 2tb drive connected to my router as a Time Machine backup drive.  I use this for three things 1)Time Machine 2) an occasional backup of  windows document subdirectory  3) backup of music and photos for long term storage.   Doing something like re-partioning the drive is not an option.  I'll just go buy another drive for time machine's sole use. In addition, using software from Seagate is not an option.  I don't want to use their software for different reasons (mainly the GoFlex home is really designed as a "media server"  which I don't use.  I, of course, use iTunes. ) On the Mac, I'm only using about 250GB total but time machine is rapidly using up space.
Apparently using a terminal command like below, used to work,  but no longer works under Yosemite.
For a limit of 100gb the number below would be 100 x 1024
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine MaxSize 102400
To remove the limit, use the following command:
    sudo defaults delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine MaxSize
Now, I'm not too familiar with terminal and I'm not about ready to issue a command without knowing exactly what it is going to do.
Is there an easier "switch" someplace or an app that does this?
If I don't limit the size, at some point there will not be any space left for windows backups and additional photo and music files.

Hmm- added "sudo" and there was no error reported:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine MaxSize xxxxxx
    I guess we'll see.

  • If I bring in photos from Iphoto, am I using more disk space on my hard drive. I dont want to duplicate my entire file. I have 26000 photos in I photo.

If I bring in photos from Iphoto, am I using more disk space on my hard drive. I dont want to duplicate my entire file. I have 26000 photos in I photo.

You have to duplicate the photos unless you want to use PSE as the external editor for iphoto. In iphoto, your photos are stored in a proprietary library, which should never be messed with by programs other than iphoto. Writing to the iphoto library from outside iphoto is the fastest way to corrupt it and lose all the pics it contains.
So you can either set PSE as your external editor and send the photos from within iphoto, or you must export the photos from iphoto to be able to use them outside that program.

  • Lightroom uses huge amounts of HDD space (temporarily) from my main drive when exporting?

I'm having a HUGE issue with Lightroom using massive amounts of HDD space on my main drive when I'm trying to export photos.
The photos are on external HDD and are being exported to the same HDD. The space being used on the C: Drive (main HDD) is upwards of 19GB, while the exported photos are only taking up a very small fraction of that size once saved...
What gives? This is causing Lightroom to fail most times because it is running out of space on my HDD while it exports.
As soon as a close Lightroom the C: drive goes right back to where it was as if nothing happened at all.

I have and the same thing happens. I'm wondering if it's an issue with my
    main drive being an SSD.
I've gone so far as to direct link the AppData folders (local and roaming)
for Adobe to my secondary drive thinking it was temporary cache, but the C
drive still gets used and it drops by about 1GB a minute during export.

  • Photo library albums and folders taking up more space

If you create albums and folders on photo library it appears to duplicate the pictures and take up more space.  Is there any way to avoid this since you can't group pictures otherwise?

Change your import settings to 128 AAC (assuming that's what you want - I'd choose MP3s, personally, since they will work in other programs and portable devices).
The previous default is AAC encode, High Quality (128kbps)
Then you can just right-click on selections and choose "Create AAC version". It will say "Create MP3 version" if you decide to use thoe import settings.
Of course you already have an AAC version, but itunes will convert it to the lower rates. I just tried it on the free single of the week, "Boarded Doors" and the file size went down from 6.9MB to 3.2MB.
You can choose to convert an album at a time - you don't need to do it song-by-song.
I suppose you could do your entire library in one fell swoop, but frankly with the size of my library, I think itunes would crash at some point. Also my hard drive would fill up. ; )
Note - this makes a COPY and does not replace the original file. So you'll need to delete the originals and make sure they go to the recycle bin.
Still, it's faster than feeding all those CDs in the drive!
So that is another reason for doing one CD at a a time, to make sure the copies get made and that the duplciates get gone.

  • IOS 8: iTunes Match hogging huge amount of storage space on iPhone (6 Plus)

    Hi there!
I use iTunes Match for a long time now, Have about 18k Songs in in all tagged incl. covers (compressed with JPEG mini app)
After updating to iOS 8, I'm quite sure that Match seems to be the root of a massive use of "other" storage space on my new iPhone 6 Plus. I opted for the 16GB because I thought I don't need more because of iTunes Match. Apparently I was mistaken as the baseline design by Apple is no longer sufficient for using the basic services Apple provides. I tried to solve the problem by restoring the Phone two weeks ago, but the problem reoccurs no matter wether I create a new iPhone and activate iTunes Match or restore it form an iCloud Backup.
I made some screenshots to show the problem:
Note that I have deleted every single cache-file prior to this screenshot and that there is not a single music file on the iPhone.
There also still seems to be a problem with the delete-function integrated in iOS, as music-data is not always wiped, but that's old news I think:
After experimenting with deactivating and activating iTunes Match on the phone and downloading a short album (~50MB) for testing purposes, this happened:
I am out of ideas how to fix this...Applecare is more or less not available right now here in Germany because of the iOS 8.0.1 disaster.
I'm really ****** of as more and more space is eaten up on my phone without even having any use of it. Restoring my iPhone every 2 weeks can't be the answer.
Does anybody have an idea how to fix this? Is this problem a known bug and fixed in iOS 8.1?
    Any help is appreciated
    Kind regards,
    Thorbjörn

    Hello Dan,
I am having the exact same issue except mine might be a little worse. I restored my phone and "set up as new" about 3 times. I didn't have much to lose as far as "backup" was concerned so I just went ahead and wiped the whole phone clean. I am missing 10gb.
I Have accepted the fact that iOS takes 5.2GB of storage to run my phone (which is ridiculous). I have also added up all my used data in the "manage storage" portion in setting and it adds up to about 2gb. So basically I have about 10GB unaccounted for. I chatted with apple twice and talked to supervisors and they all tried to walk me through the same process of restoring, rebooting, clearing cache, resetting etc. nothing has worked. I've come to the conclusion that it's a faulty flash drive and we just need to return our phones for new ones. Nothing can be done.

  • Client Cache requires ridiculous amount of disk space

I'm testing SCCM 2012 R2 with a Windows 7 client. I'm on my second application install and both apps gave me error that the cache was not large enough. The first time I increased it to 9GB and for the second app I increased it to 15GB. Both times I did it
    manually from the client machine.
If these apps are only 5MB in size why is the cache having to take up so much room? Also, is there a way to have the install automatically delete the cache if the install will be too big?

I've never had this type of issue, in all the years we've used ConfigMgr.
Assuming your installation of ConfigMgr is healthy, the first thing I'd look into, is if you may have inadvertently created the package for your 5Mb application by specifying the wrong source folder.
What I mean by that, is that sometimes, it's easy to inadvertently point the package source location at the wrong folder for source, if you point the source folder at, say, the root of a large software library (instead of the specific application folder), your
end up creating a package that is massive in size because it has all source for all applications in a single package.
(I've seen it done. It's not funny at the time, but afterwards, it gets a grin and office-myth status ;)
So, on a client, examine the ccmcache folders and content. if there's only supposed to be a single application install source in there, verify that.

  • How do I minimize the amount of disk space project files take up on my internal HD?

Does anyone know the best way to keep as much of the video footage I import on an external drive instead of my internal hard drive/ FCP "events" folder?  My external HD has a lot of space  (Western Digi Firewire 1.5TB), but my laptop has a tiny HD (100GB).  I noticed that while editing a short video that is about 12 minutes, my FCP "movies" folder has swollen up to about 15 GB worth of space.
Are there settings available to prevent this?
Is this because the "create optimized media" and "create proxy media" preference are checked?
I noticed in a tutorial video (lynda) that the narrator was able to import video files (.m4v) from a separate scratch disk and "Save to" a separate drive.  When I choose this option, it only allows me to save to my internal hard drive.
If this question is answered in another post, please indicate link.
    Thanks!

Fairly obviously, I'm not a fan of the new arrangement.
It eats up space on small screens, can't be relocated to a second screen to keep the main screen just for the document and the supposed contextualism fails to materialise when you need it most.
You can hide the Format sidebar in the View menu, but there is no keyboard shortcut as there was for the Inspectors in Pages '09.
I remain as mystified as ever by the fans of the new arrangement.

  • SSD not displaying the accurate amount of disk space available (Macbook Air 2011)

Weird issue and dont know if this is a bad SSD or just a bug in Lion BUT I have an i7 18 ghz 2011 macbook air with 256GB SSD. Now the issue is if i click on "Macintosh HD" and press command +I i get a one number, later i go into disk utility and it says a whole different number (space available). I deal with large files for video and im always deleting some and adding others. I reformatted twice and had everything re-installed, but after a few days of usage the symptoms come back. Anyone experiencing this issues? can it be a hardware issue or a bug in Lion? I called support, but they told me is out of my 90 days and i live way too far from an apple store.
    see the picture below.
Disk Utility says 69GB free, while the Finder says 199GB free? that is a HUGE difference.

Actually, it will make "Local Snapshots" whenever Time Machine is ON, not just when the normal backup destination isn't available.   See #30 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details.

  • Clean install with least amount of disk space?

    Hi,
    I just ordered a MBP 15", with a 128gb SSD.
When it arrives, I'd like to do a re-install and select only the options/languages that are necessary for me.
Is there a tutorial, or can you help me with some tips on making the footprint as small as possible? I need to save some room for Boot Camp.
I heard that you can cut out the printer drivers, and install the needed driver from the manufacturer website.
Any help is appreciated, this is my first Mac so it's all a bit new to me.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Unless you plan to use Garageband or iDVD, both have large addon libraries, the first for the loops, the seconds for the custom DVD menu background and layout. If either is not of interest to you, back them up in a later use folder on an external hard drive, but you don't have to load them all the time.

  • Default partitions taking up large amount of disk space

While investigating in Disk Management after having my Yoga 11s laptop for a few months, I noticed a bunch of partitions that are taking up a large portion of space on my computer. Which brought up a bunch of questions (related to the screenshot below):
What are the EFI System Partition and OEM Partitions?
Does the recovery partition work with that OneKey Recovery?
What does OneKey actually supposed to back up? Both the core OS files and all of the personal files/data?
Why are there two recovery partitions listed?
If the other 4 partitions are needed/used why are they all 100% free space.
Should I be storing personal files on the D: primary partition or C: partition?
The allocation of file space doesn't seem to line up with Lenovo's description here (which also mentions only 3 partitions, not 6): http://download.lenovo.com/express/HT062547.html
I just purchased a 2TB external drive and planned to partition it into two 1TB partitions and use one for backup and one for storage. In this case, do I need such a large recovery parition, or any at all on my computer?
I had planned on using the Windows 8.1 native File History for backups on the external. OneKey seems to be more of a manual backup process, but I'm trying to figure out the best why to backup both my own personal files and the system files themselves. What's the best why to set that up?
    See screenshot:
    Thank you for the help!
    Kevin

Thanks, I also found this article after some digging that explains the default partitions: http://www.lionhack.com/2013/12/25/lenovo-yoga-2-pro-partitions/
What's the reasoning behind Lenovo creating the separate C and D drives?

  • Recover Massive Amounts of Disk Space

This isn't a question, but a tip: You should delete the contents of the "Soundtrack Pro Documents/Temporary Files" folder after your projects are finished. I'm surprised at how much space the temp files consume. Every week I do this and recover 8-12 gigs of space back!

    Wow! Sweetness! Thanks.
