HT2090 iSight Not Working? W/Skype and PhotoBooth

Hello All,
My iSight camera isn't working with Skype, or PhotoBooth. I am running  Snow Leopard 10.6.8. The only time I can get the camera to work is after resetting the SMC. The camera will work for a skype session, but then the next time I go to skype, it does not work, and I have to reset the SMC all over again to make it work.
Does anyone have any fixes?
Thanks,
-G

(0)  Your problem might be a bad Skype install.
Reinstall the latest Skype version that is compatible with your Mac OS.
If the problem persists, consider the following:
(1) When you tried Apple's suggestions, IF, in EVERY user account you tested, the Apple apps also exhibited the problem (i.e., start an Apple app session, quit that app, and try an Apple app again BEFORE you launch Skype,) your Mac OS software may be damaged.
Properly applying the latest COMBO update for your Mac OS can sometimes correct software problems.  Here is how I do it:
• Use your Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions and then
download and apply the latest Combo Update, for your Mac OS,
the current one is at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1400
• Repair permissions again immediately following the system restart
   that completes the Combo update.
If the COMBO update did not resolve your problem, reinstall Mac OS X.  Then apply the Combo Update again before testing your iSight's operation.
If your problem continues after proper reinstall, make a current backup, and then use the final "Troubleshooting" suggestion:
"... contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service."
(2) When you tried Apple's suggestions, IF, in EVERY user account you tested, your problem ONLY occurs after you have launched Skype, Skype's comprehensive support system should best be able to help you use their product with your system.
Start here:  https://support.skype.com/
You can also search or post for help with your problem in Skype's dedicated Skype Discussions for Mac.  The Skype users who post there may have already solved the same problem.

  • Isight not working with skype and tokbox after snow leopard upgrade

Recently, I upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard. After the upgrade, I found that my built-in iSight camera wasn't recognized on TokBox. On Skype, it said that the iSight camera was in use by another application (however no other applications were running). The iSight is working with iChat, so I don't know what is wrong... everything was fine when I was using Tiger!

    hellokitty650 wrote:
Okay, so I restarted my computer and that didn't work.
Then, I went through the suggestions from the link you posted. I found that the iSight works in iChat and Photobooth; however, it does not work in iMovie HD (exactly the same in both user accounts on my computer). Just like before, the iSight is "in use by another application" in Skype on both user accounts.
I reset the SMC, but it didn't seem to help anything. Everything was acting the same as before I reset it.
I also noticed that my iTunes and my iMovie won't open; they both quit unexpectedly every time I try to open them. This happens in both user accounts as well.
Okay, so it will be simplest to work your issues in steps. We will start with iMovie.
Use your Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions. Then reinstall iMovie HD 6. Repair permissions again after the installer finishes.
If the version of iMovie HD 6 in your iLife '06 DVD is not "6.0.3", download and install the update:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/DL319
If you need to do this update, repair permissions again after the update is finished.
Test the reinstalled iMovie HD 6 to see if it works in more than one user account and post back the results.

My Isight is not working on skype and yahoo messenger but works on photobooth and ichat.
Ive reset my SMC and PMU but it still does not work. Only black screen appears on skype with a loading sign that takes so long. The light signal on the cam doesnt turn on as well which indicates that it is really not working.

Regarding Skype, post in the Mac Skype forums on Skype's website.  It's where all the Mac Skype users hang out.

  • Isight not working in Skype

Not only is my brand new Macbook Pro 17 inch iSight camera previewing me in vibrant magenta (go figure) it's not working in Skype. The audio is working but now video, just my picture is showing. I need help as to why my camera isn't previewing in real colors nor is it working in Skype. HELP!!!

It's possible that the camera is defective, but first I would try "resetting" it by zapping the parameter RAM by holding down the Command-Option-p-r keys at startup until you hear the startup chime ring three times.
In Skype, you need to be sure you are using the latest Skype Beta software for Mac, version 2.0.0.3:

  • Built in iSight not working wiith Skype!

I have googled all over and tried everything. I ve even seen this question being asked here before but no solution has worked for me yet.
I was using skype and isight just fine until I was unable to hear audio in Quicktime for one of my videos. So I try to download and update and ended up losing audio to ALL my videos. I believe thats when the problem started and skype could not detect any camera being attached.
So I deleted Quicktime. Unistalled it and reinstalled it. I also downloaded the svid codecs I had before and I also installed Peruvian.. which I didnt have before.
The skype video is still not working. I have repaired disk permissions as well and checked for updates, even reinstalled skype but it still says no camera attached when i click on preferences.
Please someone out there.. is there a solution??
Its probably a codec thing with quicktime but WHAT is it??
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
P.S. Isight is working fine in photobooth. I even tried yahoo chat and even that doesn't show any camera attached..

    Welcome to Discussions, mahat
For possible benefit of new Mac users, unless you are an OS X expert, it is not generally a good idea to manually delete files outside your documents folder except on specific advice from a trusted authority.
The above being said, with the application and system files you say you have added and deleted, let's start with the easiest possible fixes first.
If you do not have a current backup of all important files, do it now!
After you have the backup, if merely restarting your Mac does not correct the problem, try all relevant suggestions from:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
If you need help creating another user account for testing, see
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8235.html
If your iSight problem occurs in more than one app and more than one user account, the reset suggested there often restores proper function of inbuilt iSight.
If all your apps work properly in a different user account but some still give trouble in your normal user account, your customary user account has been corrupted somehow. The fix for that is to stop using (but do not delete) the old account and make the user accounts that works your new default login account.
If the problem for every app that gives trouble is exactly the same in every user account that you test, your problem is in your system or application software. If this is the case, post back and tell us:
      (a) which software apps you tested
      (b) which work properly
      (c) which do not work correctly in some way, and
      (d) list all problems for each that doesn't work properly (i.e., no sound, no camera, etc.)
If you do not resolve all your problems while you are following the above suggestions, we will offer specific suggestions for your remaining symptoms based on the details in your response.

  • Built-in iSight not working with Skype

Hi, I have an iMac Intel Core with Built-in iSight, and ever since I've upgraded to Snow Leopard OS, my Skype does not recognize my webcam- when I select the "Built-in iSight" option, it says it is in use by another applications, and when I select the "Built-in iSight (leopard)" option, it's just a green screen.
I've tried reinstalling, updating, and calling Apple. My friend uses Skype on Snow Leopard with a MacBook Pro 13'' and his works fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,

For any iSight trouble, start with Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
If your iSight problem occurs in more than one app and more than one user account, the reset suggested there often restores proper function of inbuilt iSight.
However, if after carefully following all the suggestions in the "How to Troubleshoot iSight" article, your built-in iSight still does not work, and if it does not show as a USB device in your Mac's System Profiler, yours is most likely a hardware problem. In that case, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
If Skype is your only problem app, you can get help for Skype specific questions here:
      http://www.skype.com/help/guides/
Skype even has its own dedicated forum for help from Skype users: http://forum.skype.com/
For any Skype questions or problems, you will probably get faster and better help from the Skype users or Skype Tech Support. Search or post in the appropriate Skype Support area.
If you still cannot find what you need, check https://support.skype.com/search_first/
    before contacting Tech Support: https://support.skype.com/support_selection
Of course we will be happy to try to help with Apple questions here in Discussions.

  • HT2090 iSight not working neither after resetting SMC? What other to do?

    Hello,
I don't know how to solve this problem with my builtin iSight camera on a MacBook.
I tried several times resetting the SMC and at the begginning it worked, but lately
this procedure is giving no results any more. I checked the System Profiler and under
the USB section I can see the builtin iSight camera displayed, but still no application
can use the camera - for eg. Image Capture says 'no camera connected'!
    What is left to do?
    Regards

    •  If you have not already done so, restart Mac and
try again.  If the iSight still does not work, continue.
    • If Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
suggestions do not help you, (are you certain that you
used the correct "reset" procedure?), yours is most likely a
hardware problem that will require a professional fix.
Unless you have a current backup, make one now.
Then use the final "Troubleshooting" suggestion:
"... contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service."
    • If you want to try one more thing on your own first,
use Disk Utility to repair permissions.  Then
download and apply the latest Combo Update for
your OS.  Currently, the latest SL Combo is here:
        http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
    • Repair permissions again immediately following the system restart
       that completes the Combo update.
Properly applying the Combo version of updates can sometimes correct software problems, but, if your trouble is caused by a hardware problem, there are no user serviceable parts of iSight.

Hi, hope that some kind sole can point me in the right direction.
Installed Skype and isight camera worked perfectly. Then today camera will not work. I have not changed any preferences or done anything different, it just does not recognize Skype.
It appears to have been hijacked by another application.

  • ISight not working with Skype on secondary user accounts

Having problems with Skype on my iMac. I cannot consistently get the built in iSight to work when logged into my partners user account. It seems to work OK from my main (admin) account but more often than not it don't light up and is greyed out in Skype preferences. This is a major problem for me that has been ongoing since Snow Leopard or perhaps longer.
I am running OS X 10.6.2 and Skype 2.8.0.722 - both the latest available versions. Any help appreciated.

Hi, check for updates on Skype, maybe uninstall & Reinstall Skype!!
Reset Permissions (Get Info ) Repair Permissions (disk utility)
Maybe run Onyx (free maintenance app):-http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/onyx.html
Make sure you are in Your Admin Account & the padlock is UNLOCKED...L

  • The mic is not working on skype, and its not muted

Every time my sister or myself go to use Skype on the IMac, the mic does not work, we can hear the person on the other end but they can not hear us, the mic is not muted, and when you go into the sound settings the mic is on the proper setting from what I can tell, and when I go into speech (under speech recognition) the microphone option for built-in microphone is grayed out. I don't what exactly this all means, but if someone else does, and can help me fix this problem I would greatly appreciate it.

I find it quite frankly perthetic that this issue still occurs and is simply ignored by Apple. You find this problem over and over, mic doesn't seem to work, but calibration does pick up sound, and there is no clear indication what is wrong, and what could possibly be done about it.
Like Dragonlover above, I have the same problem, and while looking through various Forums, I see that A LOT of other customers have the same issue. Help on this is virtually been zero from Apple. I now need to use an external mic which is just what I had in mind when I bot the Macbook Air...
Hope that the next 56 views will not just look and leave but post of they have the same problem, just to show how utterly sad it is that this is clearly a problem not just on the iMac, but on all Macbooks too. Sad Apple...just sad...

  • Earphone's mic not working in skype and messenger call after 5.1.1 update

I'm using my earphone to call a friend of mine in messenger however my friend does not hear me on the other line while using my earphones.. I've tried a different earphones with mic and still the problem persist. I thought my earphones are busted so I've tried it to call directly using my network. It works perfectly fine. Also I've tried calling my friend in skype to check if it's only messenger related but still the problem persist. Before the 5.1.1 update it works fine, I hope the issue would be solve as soon as possible..

This problem also persist in facebook's messenger call.. Anyway, thanks for the heads up.

My external FW-iSight is working on Skype and facetime - not on iChat or Photobooth.

    Welcome to Discussions, nils
    (1) External iSight can be difficult to use with other Firewire devices or certain AV software.
    More info: http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage6.html
If you must use iSight with the hardware or software that is causing your conflict, perhaps adding a separate Firewire card for your external iSight will help you.
    (2) Searching Discussions shows that other users have also encountered problems with Apogee Ensemble:
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9877690
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=605949
My web search for "Apogee Ensemble known issues Mac OS X" returned several other items.
Although none of the posts that I saw specifically addressed your external iSight issue, something in one of them may give you ideas if your problem is not otherwise resolved.
    (3) If you have not already done so, check Apogee's Ensemble FAQs for relevant info:

  • Will isight cam work on Skype?

    Hi all..
I am totally out of my depth here as i normally only use my Mac for music. My question is will an isight cam work with Skype, and what else do i need to set up a chat.
I have a ibook G4 with a 400 firewire port, 1 Ghz of memory, and would dearly love to chat to my niece.
Sorry for asking total beginner questions but we all start somewhere. Any advice would be gratefully recieved.

Yes. But, apparently, from reviewing the other comments posted, you do not want to upgrade to 10.5 for now. In Skype, open preferences and select iSight for audio and video. Sometimes there is reverb if the volume is too high using iSight audio - it is best to use headphones with microphone rather than iSight for the microphone (it works, but, best to have some distance from the computer speakers).

iSight not working with Cisco Webex, Citrix GoToMeeting or Microsoft Lync (error = webcam not detected); BUT iSight works with Skype, Facetime and Photobooth.
3 hours of phone support with Webex - no luck.
Tried SMC and PRAM reset - no luck.
Tried erasing disk and reinstalling OSX 10.8.4 and apps manually with latest versions - no luck.
Apple phone support says it's not Apple's problem because Apple apps work.
Exchanged at Apple Store for another new MacBook Air, again installed apps manually with latest version (not from time machine) - STILL NO LUCK!!!
Is there an update Apple or Cisco, Citrix and Microsoft need to put out for the new MBAs or do I just have 2 lemons???

It will be interesting to see what the vendors say about using a Mac-compatible external webcam.
If not, some netbook or other Windows® device might offer compatibility at a much lower cost than a compatible Apple notebook.
We will watch for your update(s).  What the vendors tell you will be very helpful to others who share this or similar issues with their new MBAs.
