Means the previous owner did not restore the machine back to Snow Leopard before selling it.
Solution
1: Determine the serial number of the Mac since it's not booting
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1559
2: Follow the instructions here and enter last three or four digits of the serial number to determine the model of the machine
http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/
3: Your going to need to know something like "MacBook Pro 5,2" or something like that.
MacBook Pro's 5,2, 5,1, and earlier can use the 10.6 white retail disks sold by Apple online
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
MacBook Pro's 6,2, 6,3 etc and later need to call Apple for machine specific versions of the disks, they will ask for the serial number to comfirm the model as well becaues machine specific disks have drivers for only that model of hardware.
4: Once you have the disks, follow these directions and erase the ENTIRE drive because there are hidden partitions that need to be removed first before Snow Leopard can be properly installed.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
5: Once 10.6 is installed, then setup and log in, then Software Update fully until your on 10.6.8, if you choose after that you can purchase OS X 10.8 in the app store, which is a next level OS X after Lion.
6: If that machine won't upgrade to 10.8, and you want 10.7 Lion, you can call Apple and order it.

  • Windows 8 partition on a MacBook Pro

I've managed to install a Windows 8 partition on my MacBook Pro. When I retired I wanted to dish Windows completely, however there are still a couple of applications that I do need Windows for. When running in Windows mode on my MacBook I can't connect (or even find) any WiFi networks. Also, although it is of no consequence the time is out by one hour (altering the daylight saving settings makes it out by two hours). Before I try unistalling and reinstalling Windows could anyone advise whether i would be better just giving up and getting a cheap PC to run my Windows rubbish on?
    Thanks,
    John

Have you installed the Windows support software in Windows? You need it to make the MacBook run correctly.
As you are using Windows 8, start in OS X by holding the X key while your Mac is starting, and download the Windows support software > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1638 Then, follow the steps on the website to burn it to a USB drive.
After doing this, start in Windows, connect the USB drive and install the drivers

  • How to undo partition of my macbook pro hdd?

how do i undo my HDD partition?
i did partition while upgrading macbook pro to OS X maverick?
    ans plz..!!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can't undo a partition like you undo another action on an app like cut-and-copy or type something. To undo the partition, you have to use Disk Utility, remove the partition you created and resize the main partition to get the space of the other partition added to it > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU4.html
OS X Mavericks is in development and will be released in fall. To make sure you are running OS X Mavericks (or if you are using Mountain Lion or any other Mac OS X), open  > About this Mac, and tell me which OS X version you have.
If you are using Mavericks, you have to ask in the developer forums > http://devforums.apple.com

  • How does one take out a hard drive partition on a MacBook Pro?

I have a MacBook Pro that has been configured with a partition so that my Mac can run Windows. I haven't used Windows since I got the computer -- I'm a Windows-convert and when I got the Mac, I thought I might still need Windows. BUT since I'm not using Windows at all these days and would like to regain that space on my hard drive, I want to know how to take out the partition so that the drive will just be one complete one.
I wanted to take the partition before I installed Leopard and I thought the installation would include a way to do this, BUT I guess not because it didn't work.
I realize that my taking out the partition will likely mean that I will have to reload everything... but I need first to know how to do it. Any instructions?

*Hi LGSue, Welcome* to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
I hope you are aware that repartitioning will erase everything. It is best if you have a full clone on a FWH. You tell us nothing about your back up status.
I concur w do this before Leopard so you have a fallback. Doing a Combo Update to 10.4.10 in the process would leave you with the stable 10.4.10 and a fallback if Leopard proves buggy or unhappy with any of your apps.
Not often I differ from Niel.

  • Can't create boot camp partition on new macbook pro

Hi all. Having an odd issue installing boot camp on my 2011 Macbook Pro. When I try and create a partition it gives me the following error message:
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved."
It goes on to tell me that I need to reformat my drive and try again. Seems a little extreme and even worse, I'm wondering if this will work considering that I still have over 600GB of free space available on my drive. Thought I'd post here and see if anyone has had a similar issue before harassing support.

If you look at the pdf guide in Boot Camp Assistant, step one is to backup. Common sense before altering, installing new OS, and should be required of anyone even if just updating Mac OS.
Now, having fragmented space: Apple never considers defragging free space and says Mac OS X defrags some files, and that having more than 25% free should not impact Mac OS performance.
So I think that covers Apple support for their own OS.
When you install updates, applications and such, the patches are compressed, expanded, space is fragmented, and some vendors often choose to write their updates to the far end of the drive in order to leave high access for other portions.
the best and perhaps only way to move files is to boot from another hard drive, rather than pick yourself up by your own bootstraps and try to shuffle files.
I would never recommend using only built in tools. I don't advise Apple DU First Aid as the sole utility for maintenance and repairs for Mac HFS file system. nor would I use TimeMachine alone. They are free and there and better than nothing.
Create a bootable backup clone of Mac OS for one.
    Repair your internal drive.
Try using Boot Camp Assistant; or iDefrag; or Paragon CampTune (yes, it can be used to install Windows partition as well as resize partitions now or later if needed). Does a better job.
The use of x86 Intel cpus opened up new possibilities. Some unintended or not foreseen I guess too. A competition challenge to see who could install Windows on a Mac first and easiest took place in 2006. Apple came in later with their beta. but Boot Camp Assistant has always been a weak, lame, partitioning tool.
Macs and users using gparted and other tools? and try to stop the hand-holding concept? unlikely.
A better tool? there should be, and not only that, it really needs to just be rolled into Disk utilty as one more feature and tab along with other tools - so integrated and if you want to create, resize, remove an MBR slice and Windows partition, you can.
Paragon lets you create a partition, and also they have their own NTFS driver so you don't need to format BOOTCAMP (MSDOS/FAT32) during the install phase later.
Of course installing Windows in a VM doesn't have all the trouble of dual boot native install and given RAM and processor resources, can be more than functional enough for many.
With Windows 7 you can install and have a Windows-only computer, remove all traces of Mac OS (and boot OS X off 2nd drive, either with two SSD + hard drive or eSATA or Intel 'Bolt' interface as well as FW800.

  • What do I do if I have lost my MAC-installation CD and I want to do the partition of my MacBook Pro 15" i7 quadra-core?

    Hey guys and girls.
I have bought the Windows 7 Home Premium, because I use some programs for my study that can only run on Windows.
I have started the partition and finished installing, but the Windows system doesn't communicate with the drivers.
So I went through the internet to find some info about this, and I found out that I need the Install-CD for my MacBook Pro to install the drivers on the Windows system.
My problem is that I don't have the CD.
Is there a way to finish the partition without the Cd or a way to get another CD?
    Thanks, Joakim Østergaard from Denmark.

I think you need to re-read this document, paying close attention to how to make the DVD to install the Windows drivers:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.7.pdf
Your computer did not ship with any DVD's, thus there is nothing for you to get, nor is such needed.

  • Partition Windows On Macbook Pro

I want to partition windows onto my macbook pro so I can download the autodesk inventor software. I figured out that I can create a windows 7 or later install disk but I need the iso image to do so. So what iso image is needed and how can I get it.

You need to buy a retail copy of windows 7. A google search for buy retail windows 7 should turn up a few store that still have them. Or you could use a system builders oem version. Again a google search would be you best option to find a copy to buy.

  • Can I install Snow Leopard on a new partition on a Macbook Pro (Late 2011)?

I need to get Pro Tools 9 up and running again after I migrated from PC to Mac, but I know that Pro Tools 9 doesnt work with Lion.. I dont have the money to upgrade to PT10 so my thought was to go downgrade to Snow Leopard to get it working. But I dont want to leave Lion, so my question is if I can make a new partition and install Snow Leopard on the new partition and have both OSs bootable?
The guy in the store I bought my mac from said Snow Leopard probably wouldnt play nice with the mac since its adapted to Lion but I dont trust people that get money for preaching about the constant need for "the latest". So I thought I'd ask the experts instead, so here I am! What do you guys think?

theoretically, it should work - but the guy at the Apple Store is correct....computers that ship with the latest operating system do not support being downgraded.
You might not get past the spinning beach ball & gray screen if you try to boot from the Snow Leopard install disc.
It's worth a shot though if you want to try it. Just don't try to 'downgrade' the current Lion installation back to Snow Leopard. Try instead to create a new partition specifically for Snow Leopard. Disk Utility - select the top HD (probably reads Hitachi something)...select it, click on the Partition tab. Select the top partition, and you should then be able to see the + so you can add a new partition. I would probably make it about 20GB give or take depending on how much space you think you will need - but i believe the Snow Leopard installation by itself takes up around 8-10GB.
Once this partition is created, insert your Snow Leopard installation disc, restart the computer and hold the C key down to start from the install disc. When it walks you through the steps for installation, select the newly created Snow Leopard partition. Install. Be sure to go through all the Software Updates (numerous times) after the installation is done.
You can select which startup disc you want to boot from by holding the Option button down at startup until you see the gray startup manager that shows your Lion partition, Recovery Disc partiton, and your Snow Leopard partition.
If for whatever reason this doesn't work, simply just erase the partition. It likely will not work but you should be able to just erase that newly created partition without any other problems.

  • Install Snow Leopard on new partition (on new MacBook Pro)

I need to install OS X 10.6 on my new MacBook (10.8.2) because older programs won't work on my new machines.
I've successfully created a new partition. However when I hold down option button on startup I only see original partition and Recovery-10.8.2 but not the new partition. How on earth does one install an older version of OS X on a new machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    1. It does. The newer Mac OS X versions contain the drivers for older supported machines. The older OSes don't contain the drivers for newer computers, as those didn't exist when the older OS came out.
    2. Restart the computer with the Option, Command, and R keys held down, open the installer, and specify the new partition as the destination.

  • I deleted a partition on my macbook pro and now that space is not visible in Disk Utility

I had a dual boot setup on my 1TB drive on my macbook with a linux partition. I decided to delete the linux partition and free up some space for my OSX partition. I went into recovery mode and first erased the linux swap partition then the linux partition. Then I went into the partition tab on Disk Utility and clicked on the "-" button for each swap partition and linux partition. Now when I go into Disk Utility now though the 500 GB that should have been freed up is not visible and I cant resize the OSX partition to include the extra space.

Let it finish, then you can safely delete it.

  • I can no longer do a single partition with my macbook pro

after installing mavericks. I had a win 7 installed but it stopped working after the OS upgrade so i deleted the that partition hoping to do a clean install of win 7 again but i am having issues doing a single partition. i am getting this error - Partition failed with the error:  Couldn’t modify partition map because file system verification failed.

Hi I am having a similar issue maybe you can help me.
I have been trying to make a partition lately for windoes 8.1
I have OSK Mavericks and I tried both using bootcamp to make a partition and then I tried using disk utility to make a partition.  I have looked up how to fix it such as verifying the disk or verifying the disk on the repair drive. I have also tried typing in that command in the Command+S startup.
Nothing is working I am getting errors every time.  I really really really need help here.  I cannot figure out what is wrong.   If you could help me that would be very appreciated.
(Btw the first time I tried partitioning through Bootcamp it was working but then I ejected my usb as it was making the partition and it gave me an error.  Partitioning has been giving me errors ever sense that.)

  • How can I add a bootcamp partition to a MacBook Pro (10.6.8) with Parallels 6 already installed?

Goal: Install Windows 7 to run Rhino 5

Open Boot Camp Assistant, read the documentation carefully, then configure the partition. Your hard drive must contain only one partition - the OS X partition. If you've made a second one on which to run Parallels, then you cannot create a Boot Camp partition.
