You need to have Snow Leopard, but I think 10.6.7 is Snow Leopard. You should run software update before downloading Lion (I think that will take you to 10.6.8). You should also check that you do not have old PPC software (see "About this Mac" under tha Apple menu). You should clone your hard drive to an external drive so that if something does go wrong you can revert to Snow Leopard. Having said that, I had very few problems and all were very minor.

So clone backup your data at least twice, and you will be set to do the installation. Upgrade and install even with the Flash drive requires 10.6.6 or later. -
I am contemplating purchasing an iPad, and then possibly a Macbook pro. Currently, I have an iMac G5, and a Powerbook G4. Neither which can be upgraded past Leopard. My question is do I need to have Snow Leopard in order to be able to update an iPad? Do I need to reverse my thought on which to buy first?
I plan on keeping the iMac and PB until they cease to work ( have replaced HD's on both already). I mostly use the PB-- lots of writing, surfing, email, etc.

You first must upgrade to Snow Leopard. In order to upgrade to Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks you first must upgrade to Snow Leopard. Your model should be able to run Mavericks which you can download for free.
Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
Snow Leopard General Requirements

Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

Remember to do the following before starting the upgrade process:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Restart the computer from the Apple menu.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X. -

Snow Leopard retail disk will load Version 10.6.3, and you'll need to update it to 10.6.8 (this is just one update, you don't need to go to 10.6.4, 10.6.5, etc.). Go to > Software Update to update.
Then you should have the Mac App Store, which is where you go to download the Lion installer. -
I need to reinstall Snow Leopard
I need to reinstall Snow Leopard. My MacBook Pro refused to boot up and by a process of elimination I got to the point where I reinstalled Leopard from the disks that came with the computer. Now I need to get Snow Leopard back so I can access Time Machine and get my files back, I bought Snow Leopard as a download. How can I access and reinstall it?

For hard drives the "fresh install" order for best long term performance is:
OS X (all updates and upgrades)
All Programs humanly possible at the time.
User files dead last.
SSD's don't matter as they use wear leveling and access speed is equal across the whole media far as I know.

There are only two versions of Snow Leopard, the ordinary one and the server edition. Most people have no need of the server edition. Any Snow Leopard retail disc, no matter how old, even 10.6.0, can be updated to 10.6.8, so the version is pretty much irrelevant. You need to make sure your hardware is up to scratch for Lion though - you have to have an Intel processor, Core 2 Duo or better - NOT Core Duo.

I have created a new partition on the Mac HD for Lion as I would like to dual boot. Do I need to install Snow Leopard on that partition before installing Lion? If so, can I use one of my Time Machine backups to do this?

No, you can't partition a Time Capsule's internal HD. Both partitions will back up to the same sparse bundle. keeping the backups for each partition separate.
Time Machine will not take the two OSX partitions as two different computers, but for best results, exclude the Snow Leopard drive from backups on the Lion partition, and exclude the Lion partition from backups on the Snow Leopard partition.
There may be some files on the Lion partition that Time Machine on Snow Leopard won't like, among other things. See #10 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details. -
