HT2292 Have upgraded to itunes 11.0.1.12 start itunes and it is closed, message reads I tunes closed to help protect computer, data execution prevention has closed itunes. windows Vista 32bit

Have upgraded to itunes 11.0.1.12. Start itunes and it is closed with the message itunes closed to help protect computer data execution prevention has closed itunes. operating system is ms vista 32 bit. I have followed the procedures that I can find on the itune support site.

You're welcome. Glad you got things sorted out.
(No problem about not spotting the solutions ... the most common causes of this sort of message changes over time, so it's not straightforward to be able to tell when a given piece of advice still applies to the symptoms. Definitely worth posting to try to get a current heads-up on the likely contemporary causes of a particular error message.)

  • HT1527 Can't open iTunes...windows connectivity test says that iTunes has stopped working -  Date execution prevention has closed iTunes.   What do I do now?

I can't open iTunes...Windows connectivity test says that iTunes has stopped working....Date execution prevention has closed iTunes.

If you update your QuickTime Player to the latest version, does that clear up the DEP errors in iTunes?

  • Why Might Data Execution Prevention Be Closing iTunes 11.2.0.115?

I don’t own any Apple hardware and only use iTunes to listen to songs I purchased in the iTunes store that only work in iTunes. I started noticing problems when I updated to version 11.2.0.115 today. The “iTunes.exe” process remains in the “Processes” list of my Windows Task Manager for about 30 seconds after I exit the program. A balloon then appears in my taskbar saying Data Execution Prevention has closed iTunes. Windows Help and Support suggests seeing if a DEP-compatible version is available before turning DEP off for the program. I’m using Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2 32-bit. What, if anything, can I do?

I fixed it on my computer.  Not sure which of the steps I did fixed it so I will list all of them.
I wasn't getting the error until I did the following (to prevent it from just crashing on logging into the iTunes Store)
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/23987910#23987910
I added C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support; to the system variables PATH (depending on your operating system, your file path will be different).  How to do that has been outlined in the above linked article.
This now caused DEP to freak out whenever I logged into the store and close iTunes.  Adding iTunes to the DEP filter didn't solve the problem.  So I removed all the saved system settings for iTunes and ran Apple Software Update.  I also went to the DEP and added every .exe I could find in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple to the exceptions list (again, depending on your OS the file path may be different.)
To remove the saved system settings for iTunes you can find those in C:\Documents and Settings (for Win XP) or C:\Users (for Win 8).  Find a folder named AppData or Application data under various user names and remove any Apple related files you can.  I had one .log file that couldn't be deleted, but that shouldn't be a problem.

  • Data Execution Prevention makes my iTunes shut down. SOS!

For no apparent reason, iTunes shuts down after about 1 minute with the message "data execution prevention has closed iTunes". I've looked online and tried everything. Help?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it, which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • HT201413 suddenly itunes will not open and I get a message that the "Data Execution Prevention" is blocking itunes from opening....why????

itunes will not open and I get a message that the "Data Execution Prevention (DEP)" feature in Windows is preventing it from opening. (this is after I've been using itunes for years???? If I try to manually deselect itunes from the DEP filter, of course I get a message that itunes cannot operate without the DEP active...another Catch 22 from the evil program designers....

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

  • HT1222 "Data Execution Prevention" not letting ITunes launch. How do I remove DEP?

How do I get rid of Data Execution Prevention!!!??? All of a sudden this annoying little program wont allow me to open Itunes!! I tried turning it off the way they said to but it still blocks itunes. I even reinstalled Itunes No luck  I still cant use Itunes  HELP!!!

And no problem for "barging in"; your expertise in solving Windows issues is always welcome. Cheers.
    Thank you.
The situation with these changed up a bit with the introduction of the iTunes 10.5.x versions and above. (A "new problem wearing old trousers" event.) I have a note in the Full Host Bar about it, though it's speculative. Here's the content of the post there:
There's various possible causes for DEP errors when launching iTunes for Windows. But in recent times we've been able to get past a number of them by updating folk's QuickTime Player to the latest version. For example:
Re: When I tried to update to 10.6.3 it failed
The interesting thing about that is that since iTunes for Windows 10.5.x, you aren't supposed to need QuickTime for Windows componentry to be installed in order for iTunes for Windows to launch. So it's not likely that the DEP errors are being caused purely by the lack of QuickTime componentry on the PCs in question (or by the lack of new-enough versions of QuickTime componentry on the PCs in question).
One putative mechanism for what's going on.
I've noticed (in the course of other experimentation) that if the QuickTime Player is uninstalled on an XP system and iTunes for Windows (some version post 10.5.x) is launching, I can get a message saying that certain kinds of content can't be played because QuickTime isn't installed.
So there's a task performed by iTfW when launched to check on the presence of certain types of QTfW componentry. If the answer is "that componentry is not present", a routine is run that shows the dialog saying that certain content can't be played.
It's plausible that Data Execution Prevention is interpreting the routine that produces the dialog as being a malicious act on some systems, and throwing the DEP error when the routine is run.
That would explain why updating (or possibly installing) the latest version of the QuickTime Player is getting people past the DEP errors. The check for QTfW componentry is run when itunes launches, but it determines that the componentry is present. So the routine that produces the dialog isn't run, and Data Execution Prevention doesn't feel compelled to throw the DEP error.

  • Data Execution Prevention shutting down iTunes even with exception added

Well, was having this problem, it miraculously fixed itself for like a day but now it is happening again. Data Exectuion Prevention for Windows keeps shutting down iTunes. I have gone into the DEP settings and added an exception for it to not apply to iTunes but it is still happening every time I open iTunes. Today I downloaded and installed the new version of iTunes, hoping that would make a difference, but it is still happening. Also, since I installed that version about an hour ago, iTunes keeps opening itself without me telling it to--every five minutes I see it opening without me doing anything and then immediately being closed by DEP. I am getting very frustrated. Thanks in advance for any help.

I had the same issue after my recent update of iTunes.  I didn't update Quicktime 'cuz I don't use it much (or at all).  On another thread discussing the same issue, I saw that the Quicktime installation can affect iTunes.  So I downloaded the latest Quicktime, installed, redooted - issue fixed (for now).

  • Data Execution Prevention prevents itunes from opening on my user ID, but not every other user ID.

I completely deleted every Apple file from my computer.  There are 4 user IDs on my computer.  Mine is the Administrator, my husband's ID my son's ID. and a completely new ID I set up to see if I could get iTunes to work.
I reinstalled iTunes 10.5 on my Administrator ID.  The installation went fine, but iTunes will not open in my ID, or my husband's ID.  I get the message that Data Execution Prevention has closed it.  iTunes will open in my son's ID, as well as the new ID I set up for iTunes testing.
I have tried uninstalling (deleting ALL Apples files) and reinstalling on my ID as a Standard user.  Same thing.  iTunes doesn't work on my ID or husband's, but does on the other 2 User IDs.
I have not activated Microsoft Outlook on the 2 IDs where iTunes works.  Outlook is activated on the other 2 User IDs.
Does something about Outlook cause me to get the DEP error?  Is there a way to fox this problem?  I really don't want to have to go to a completely different User ID everyt ime I want to use iTunes.
I am using Windows Vista Home Deluxe, and installing the 64-bit iTunes download on the Apple.com website.
I have used instructions from several documents here on the Apple boards.  The ones I use most are "iTunes for Windows:Doesn't open after upgrading in Windows Vista of Windows 7".  "iTunes for Windows of Windows 7:Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues", and on this one, I followed the instructions for user-specific troubleshooting.  I also followed the instructions in "General installation troubleshooting".
I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes so many times, i can almost do it in my sleep.  Somebody please help.  My iPhone and iPod need updating!!  Thanks!!!

  • Cannot run Quicktime or iTunes - Data Execution Prevention

I have tried to install quicktime and itunes and when i run them windows vista home tells me that Data Execution Prevention has closed the application. I have removed itunes and quicktime and just tried installing quicktime - and i get the same error.
I tried turning off DEP for quicktime - but windows tells me that it cannot be turned off for Quicktime.
    Any solution to this?
    Thanks!

What are you doing when iTunes or Quicktime crashes? Does it crash on launch?
Have you ever installed a 3rd party Quicktime alternative -- i.e. you downloaded and installed Quicktime from a non-Apple source? (There are some codec vendors that repackage / redistribute Quicktime. I recommend only installing Quicktime from the Apple web site or Apple Update Software.)
When you uninstalled Quicktime, did you do the scorched earth version of the Quicktime uninstall -- where you uninstall, then run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility and then manually search for Quicktime files (particularly in your system folder) and delete them?
What I'm concerned about is that you have a partial, non-standard Quicktime install on your machine.
Do you have any third party iTunes plugins or Quicktime codecs installed?

  • DEP (Date Execution Prevention) Closed iTunes due to security reason

I just bought a new laptop (SONY SR) operated with Window Vista. My laptop never run iTunes since I installed it. I tried uninstall and reinstall again n again, but it just doesn't work.
A screen appeared and say that iTunes stopped working, DEP (Data Execution Prevention) has closed iTunes due to security reason.
How do I off that "DEP"? Thanks!!!

Hi, I just got this problem solved. Hope it helps.
You don't have to turn off DEP or reinstall any program.
The only thing you need to do is associate your Quicktime files ONLY to QuickTime player.
When you open QuickTime it will automatically pop up a window to ask you if you want to fix file association. The answer is positive of course.
If it still doesn't work maybe you could uninstall some codec / media players which associate with QuickTime files.

  • Unable to open Itunes in Vista - data execution prevention (DEP)

I'm unable to open itunes on my computer. I can install it but not open it. It says that the data execution prevention has stopped the running of the program. I have tried to change the settings of the data execution program, but it will not allow me to accept itunes - as it says that DEP has to be activated for itunes and cannot be deactivated. What do I do?

One temporary solution is to run itunes through XP rather than vista.
To do this go to the program icon (makes sure its not a shortcut, and the actual program icon, you can find this in your program files if its on on your desktop)
    sideclick on the icon
    go to properties
    compatibility tab
check Windows XP service pack 2
    tell it to apply
This should allow you to use itunes

Yes, this did solve the problem.  But I had some trouble updating QuickTime.  It failed, with the installer complaining that it did not have the required permissions to install the files it needed in the program directory.  I got it to work by telling it to install the files to another directory.  All seems well now - Thanks!

Not a lot of documentation on that one, I'm afraid, but there's some general principles troubleshooting we can try with it that might get us moving forwards.
    (1) Do you currently have a copy of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package installed on that PC? If so, try downloading the following security update:
[Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update|http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=766a6af7-ec73-4 0ff-b072-9112bab119c2&displaylang=en#filelist]
Does iTunes install for you after applying that update?
    (2) If no joy there, head into your Windows Update and click on the Update History. Have a lot of Updates also been failing for you recently? If so, doubleclick on the entries for the failed updates to bring up more information on each. What error codes appear for you for the failed updates? (Precise spelling, please.)
