How do I import video clips from my Sony XR500 camcorder to my imac? Using imovie08? Please help. I loved my mac until this. DO I need to upgrade to Lion or a higher imovie as well to make improvements?

Should work with iMovie 08. Will definitely work with iMovie 09 and iMovie 11.

I know I've made this work in the past but now, I'm not sure how. Came back from a trip with several hundred photos on iPhoto on my MBP(running SL). i would like to import them into Aperture on my iMac(Leopard).I think that in the past I copied the files into my Public folder on the MBP and would be able to import wirelessly into Aperture on the iMac. I have File Sharing enabled on both machines. Now Aperture on the iMac appears to see the MBP Public Folder but no photos show up in it. I must be missing something here but I'm not sure what. Is there some other straight forward to way to move the files from the MBP to the iMac short of burning them to a dvd or connecting the two via firewire?

If you simply enable File Sharing on the MBP: Sys prefs -> Sharing -> File Sharing -> On.
And then on your iMac use the Finder sidebar -> Shared -> click on your laptop's name in the list -> choose connect as -> fill in your username/password as it is on the MBP and you should be able to select all partitions on the MBP, and your own user folder (and perhaps public folders).
And you should have read/write permissions so you can copy the files over.

Import Video via USB from Sony Handycam HDD

Just purchased Final Cut Express, eager to get to my first project. Plugged in my camera the only way possible (mini usb), my mac mini recognized the camera and I navigated using the import menu.
Finding the *.mpg files that are on my camera's hard drive I selected the ones I wanted and "chose". An error message appeared telling me that these *files were unrecognizable*.
Investigating, I found I could not open them in quicktime player - but could view them just fine using my favorite 3rd party player VLC.
I did a bit of google'ing to find I'm screwed. My research tells me that my camera writes them in a "multiplexed" encoding, which Quicktime can't read even though it's mpeg. One solution that was offered is to loop it through a composite dongle and rerecord all of my footage in real time - but that's not an option for me.
*How can I get my Sony Handicam HDD camera to import into FCE? Is their some free conversion software or drivers?*

More frustration. I finished batching my footage for my project, and just as I lay the first scenes on the timeline and tell it to playback, I get this nasty "Unrendered" message in the player. I didn't add any effects or mess with settings, they're the same clips they just previewed for me - but now they're on the timeline where I need to work on them.
I remember reading that FCE's big feature was the whole "Real Time" feature, so I messed with the RT tab to find that it works, kind of, if I kick it into manual mode and cut my frame rate in half. Anything more and it gives me an error message that tells me I need to increase my compression or else switch back to Safe RT. *What and how do I increase compression?*
So is my Mac Mini doomed to be at 50% frames due to the lack of power? *Is it the processing speed, ram, or video card (or all) that's holding me back?*

I'm trying to get a video that I recorded and edited with my iPhone 4 and iMovie, on my PC so I can share it with others. It won't email because the file size is too big (but the video is only 1:20...) and I uploaded it to YouTube but they removed the audio because it's copyright infringment. I've going through My Computer and a few other things and all the photos get imported but when I try and play an imported video it won't load and just freezes. Any tips?

IF you plug in your device to the mac you can import your photos easily, just open up iphoto then select your device from the left side (it will appear at the bottom) click on it and on the right side click on "import photos"
after its done with import you can menage your photos and videos with drag and drop.

From what I've read already, I ended up purchasing and downloading Quicktime MPEG2, and used the Utility MPEG Component Lion from downloaded MPEG Streaming 1.9.3b6 to enable video and sound to play on the computer directly from the camcorder. The problem is that when I import these clips using iphoto (it pops up when I connect the camcorder), the sound does not accompany the video onto the computer. I would probably use MPEG Streamclip (free) for this. There are versions for both Mac and PC platforms and if the PC version works the same as the Mac version, it will allow you to convert your files to DV, AIC, Motion-JPEG, MPEG-4, or H.264 video with Linear PCM, MPEG-4 (AAC), or other audio compression formats know to be accepted by iMovie '08.

Support for AVCHD was not added to Aperture until version 3.3, which requires 10.7.x to run.
But iMovie should work with your camera if you do not plan to upgrade to Aperture 3.3.x

Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

Trying to import mini dv clip from Sony camcorder (which I could do on my v.old copy of Premiere Elements - lost somewhere in the loft!) just discovered that this is no longer supported on v.13!!! Trying to find a work-around but the one explained isn't clear - please could you email an 'idiots guide' step-by-step how to import DV into v.13
