Every time I plug in my headphones into my Macbook Pro, my volume control buttons don't work. Even after I unplug my headphones they don't work, they get stuck on the level of volume it was at when I plugged in the headphones. I can control the volume if I go to system preferences and do it that way, but that is such a pain. Also, in order to get the buttons to work again I have to completely restart my computer which is also a pain! What should I do, or can do, to fix the problem?

  • Macbook Pro 15" volume level changes by itself

    Hi all!
About a month ago I have upgraded my rock-solid Macbook Pro 15" (mid 2012) from Mountain Lion to Mavericks. All seemed fine (with the exception of some known annoyances with WIFI) until last week when all of a sudden the volume level started to change by itself. It started going up and down, turning mute and turning on again and so on, just like an invisible hand or a remote access have taken control of my machine (it wouldn't even let me change the the volume using the volume buttons while this weirdness is happening). This has never happened before. To make things worse, I have then upgraded to Yosemite and all seemed fine but then the weird volume changes appeared again and I now am stuck with no straight forward way of reverting all the way back to the original Lion (which worked perfectly since Mac purchase back in 2012).
    Can anyone help?
I have googled for similar issues and have seen  some answers (mostly not that relevant) including a thread on this forum suggesting to reset the SMC. I have tried that using the suggested key-combination press, but it did not seam to have solved the problem, as the volime changes continue when I least expect it.
Is this a hardware problem? If so, would a change of the keyboard resolve things?   [ At some stage I thought maybe the problem was caused by the fact the I have fiddled a little bit with the keyboard by lifting the :; key (next to L and under P) and applying a bit of WD40 to clean a tiny spil of sugary liqid that caused the key to get sticky.  But the volume keys are way far on top of keybord so my assumtion was/is that the volume changes would not be related to the cleaning. ]
is this a software problem? Some thread on similar (not identical) issues had suggested there are some bugs in soft and Apple is aware. For this reason I gave Yosemite a go but the problem continues. Would reverting to Lion sole the problem you think?  [ Maybe I should ask here if anyone can suggest how to go about this downgrade as Option-Cmd-R key-combination press at start up does not give me the Interner Recovery scree anymore, but keeps taking me (just like Cmd-R) straight to the OSX Utilities where can wipe of the disk (which I did) and reinstall Yosemite only. ]
I would very much apreciate any replies that might help me solve this issue.
    Many thanks
    Ty

  • MacBook Pro Touchpad/Volume problem

Hello all, I've just upgraded to a MacBook Pro and Logic Pro 9 and I'm having some problems with track volumes changing when I swipe the touchpad accidentally. Does anyone know how to turn that function off?
    Thanks in advance!

Hey, thanks for the interest Jazzhead! I'll try and explain it a bit better here. So when I'm in the normal arrange view, you know how there are two channel strips along the left hand side? The track you have selected, plus the output track. Well when I'm trying to move my cursor around or zoom in/out using the trackpad in the arrange portion of the screen, sometimes what I'm doing with my fingers changes the volume on those channel strips. If I have a full mixer up, it will effect some of those channel volumes all though that is less of a problem. It's just really annoying when you go and zoom out of the session using the track pad, and you accidentally put the 1/2 Output to +6dB and not even realize it.
    Thanks again,
    Cam

  • Apple TV messed up Macbook Pro, Keyboard volume controls won't work.

I can't get my Keyboard Volume controls to work on my macbook pro, Apple TV messed it up. This isn't an issue with disabling the remote control infrared receiver. When I want to turn my volume up or down, I have to go to system prefrences and change the volume that way. It's annoying and a big waste of time. Please help me before I throw this computer against the wall.
    Thank You!!

I've got an extremely similar problem. Spillage on the keyboard. Unknown, what it was.
To start with it was dead, no power up.
Then it dried out. There was still a bit of battery power left, and the mouse and track pad worked for a few minutes then it all froze.
So I shut the lid. I left it like that, because I couldnt switch it off.
Much later, opened it up again and all windows opened up, all info was correct,
I was advised to try wireless mouse and keyboard, but you have to get in there before it freezes again.
The battery was charging normally as well.
I made the decision to let the battery die completely and then switch it on again, but sure enough when I did this, it ignored any re-boot command and that's that. Dead as a do-do.
So, without being a computer whizz kid, I presume, it's off to the Apple store for a sizeable bill.
Unless someone else has a cunning plan ????????
I would love to hear it !!!!!!

  • Macbook Pro 15inch Volume, brightness keys not working (All the special F keys)

    Hello,
I have this problem on my MBP where my Fn (Function Keys) on the top row of my keyboard don't work properly. I use these keys all the time to adjust brightness, keyboard LED brightness, pause, play and volume but they aren't working anymore. When I press F12 it shows the dashboard. I already have the 'Use all F1, F2 ect. keys as standard function keys' unchecked in System preferences, Keyboard. I am on a bootcamped MBP but mainly use the Mac OSX. This problem is occuring on Mac OSX not Windows. I have not dropped my MBP to damage it or anything like that. I have installed 16GB Ram and the Seagate Momentus 750GB Hybrid SSD a few months ago. Anyone know how I can fix this?
Any help will be extremly appreciated!

Check the setting in Keyboard, Keyboard Tab, that the "Use all F1, F2, ect. keys as standard function keys" isn't checked.

  • MacBook Pro speaker volume

I just finished importing a ton of CDs to my laptop and now I find I cannot get the internal speaker volume up past a whisper.  Any thoughts?  This is barely audible yet is working fine on an external output device via Bluetooth.  And, for those of you who say reset PRAM or buy external speakers, this problem never existed until I recently began importing my music library.  I'm sure it's just a setting but I don't know where to begin and definitely do not want to re-import 1000's of songs at a new volume.  Please help.  Thanks.

    Hello there, Donna.
There are a few places where sound can be adjusted on your Mac. If you're in the iTunes application, the following link from the online iTunes Help Guide provides some standard information:
Adjust the volume - iTunes Help
Adjust the volume of music and video
Change the volume for all songs (like turning the volume knob on a stereo): Use the volume slider at the top of the iTunes window.
The maximum volume is limited by your computer’s volume setting.
Adjust the volume of a particular song or video: Select it, choose File > Get Info, click Options, and drag the volume slider. iTunes uses this setting each time the song or video plays.
Have all songs and videos always play at the same volume level: Choose iTunes > Preferences, click Playback, and select Sound Check.
If you’re using remote speakers connected to an AirPort Express: You can use the volume controls on the speakers as well as the iTunes volume controls. To use only the speaker’s controls, click the AirPlay button , click Single, and choose the speakers from the pop-up menu.
SEE ALSOChoose which speakers to use
Additionally the Mac OS Help Guide provides this information:
Turn the volume up or down - Mac Help
Turn the volume up or down
To change your computer’s volume, click the Volume control in the menu bar, then drag the slider to adjust the volume. If the Volume control isn’t in the menu bar, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Sound. Click Output, then select the “Show volume in menu bar” checkbox.

  • Macbook Pro master volume changed by iTunes

Running Lion but this problem has existed under prior OS versions. I have had a symptom where the master volume level changes on its own. For example, It set it to full volume then sometime later notice that it is set to about 40%.
Today I finally duplicated the problem using iTunes 10. Volume set to full, I select a song and delete it, and the master volumen is reset to ~40%. This happens every time! I have had it happen outside of iTunes but cannot isolate a pattern like I have with iTunes.
    Help appreciated!

Went to the Genius Bar, The tech decised it was a bad logic board. I got a new computer to replace a week old one. After going through setting it up again, I have the same issue. System Profiler sees that an iPhone is connected, but not iTunes. I can not sync to the new MBP. At the moment, I am syncing to my old MBP, just so I have the iPhone set up as I had it.
BTW, if you go through the "iTunes does not see iPhone" suggestions and enter DFU (restore mode) your iPhone gets bricked. But it is recoverable by using a different computer. I am currently trying a NEW install of the OS on the i7, but I suspect a hardware/driver interaction problem. I have no hopes until 10.6.4 arrives in a month or so.

  • No audio on Macbook Pro. Volume box with "not permitted" sign Ø underneath

    Hi everybody,
I have been having this problem reoccur for the past couple days, but I don't know what is causing it. Occasionally, when I press the volume keys on my keyboard, it doesn't make the "click" sound (I don't have it set so that it doesn't make noise). I still have this problem when I use my earphones. I made sure that the audio output in my system preferences is set to "internal speakers", made sure that my OS is up to date and have even tried resetting my computer. Nothing seems to help. And it really happens out of the blue as well -- I would be watching a video or listening to some music with no issue at all, browse around some other pages and come back to see that I can't hear the audio anymore. This doesn't seem to happen while I'm watching the videos though.
Eventually after repeatedly increasing and decreasing the volume (with no sound coming out of my computer) this pops up and  does not allow me to change the volume at all even if I press the volume keys on my keyboard:
This problem goes away after I wait a while doing nothing, but does anybody know what I can do to permanently fix this issue?
    Any tips are appreciated

    1. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222
    2. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    3. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.

  • My MACBOOK Pro turned out to be Snow Leopard, and later upgraded to LION. And update the EFI, I would like to replace the Snow Leopard, EFI can not boot, how do? How to use the Snow Leopard install disk to reduce EFI?

My MACBOOK Pro turned out to be Snow Leopard, and later upgraded toLION. And update the EFI, I would like to replace the Snow Leopard, EFIcan not boot, how do? How to use the Snow Leopard install disk to reduce EFI?

Do you mean some of your software does not work in Lion? Do you want to return to using Snow Leopard? If so, then do this:
    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • Performance reduced under Bootcamp after EFI update on Macbook Pro Retina

after i upgraded EFI on my retina macbook pro the proformence reduced to unusable. under heavy load under bootcamp windows7. the cpu clock drops and as well as cpu clock. this is the screen shot of gpu clock monitoring from windows u can see the gpu clock is running at 270Mhz at most of the time and trying to be back to 725Mhz(yea, not 900Mhz!) when im running a graphic benchmark at same time cpu will run about 1.1Ghz as well. i noticed that it will run 10-20sec normally then CPU and GPU clock will start dropping. It's almost like speedstep is programmed backwards. My CPU is constantly running at 3.1-3.2GHz, and then as soon as a game loads, it drops to 1.2GHz. I've lost track of how many times I reset the SMC  reseting SMC PRAM, reinstalling windows using Bootcamp or even erease the entire drive and start over from network recovery MacOS did not solve this problem. so all the recent games like COD MW3, Starcraft II, BF3,or D3 will only run about about 10 fps as i was playing them with no ploblem before the EFI update.
this is killing me! please help.
im in NY, in this season i dont think is the overheating problem. when i check the temperature, it stays about 80C (fans will run about 4k rpm). but some time heavy loaded Mac OS cpu is about 90 degree but only with 3k rpm fan kicked in.
i did search online, seems that some other people have the same problem with rMBP or MBA 2012.
anyone knows if i take my macbook pro to the store, will those people work at genuines bar help me with this "windows" problem?
    thanks!

Hey Shadowyani, please take a time and fill a bug report at http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/ . The machine is useless for me as it is now because I develop and use very GPU/CPU demanding scientific applications, after the update my realtime applications are completely useless as they drop from something like 25fps to 9 fps even on Mac OS X (no SMC reset fixed the issue). In bootcamp the situation is worse, my software runs at 4 fps and gaming turns to be impossible to play as well.
Please let Apple know about the problem, fill a bug report, even if SMC reset once in a while fixed the issue for you (this is not a common behaviour and must be fixed). We paid the price for cutting edge technology.
Apple shall not do a downgrade of the system after few weeks, remember that most of reviews and benchmarks were done BEFORE the EFI Update, so people are being fooled by Apple in this sense.

  • My Macbook Pro began crashing when I tried running safari. An error message came up asking that I repair the HD volume. Before I was able to run repair, computer shut down. Now I can not get it to boot. I tried booting in safe mode to no avail. Pls help.

Can someone please help me with a Macbook Pro booting question?
Recently, my mid 2010 MacBook Pro has started acting up when I am on Safari. Safari would unexpectedly crash multiple times in a row, then run fine for a while, then again, crash repeatedly. Not long after this began happening, an error message from my Prosoft Drive Genius 3 software, threw out a message that a serious error had occurred and I needed to repair the HD volume. Before I was able to run the software to repair the HD volume, the machine stopped working. I turned off the Macbook and when I tried to restart, it would not boot. I have since removed all external hardware from my machine and tried several times, unsuccessfully, to boot. I have also tried booting in safe mode when also does not work.
Any suggestions?  Thanks for your help.

    Try SMC reset:
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. (four keys together)
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

I am unable to reinstall Photoshop CS6 (I do have the serial number) on my Macbook Pro 10.9.5 (Mavericks os). and am getting the message "Installation on case-sensitive volumes is not supported.  Please choose a different volume for installation."  I am further told that "Adobe apps cannot be installed on case-sensitive drives, you need to Install the product onto an HFS+ or HFSJ non-case-sensitive drive."
What I don't understand is this:  I originally bought and installed Photoshop CS6 back in March 2013, and it worked fine.  Yesterday my hard drive had to be replaced and my computer person salvaged as much of what was on it as he could, but now I have to reinstall Photoshop.  1) Why did it work before and it's not working now?  2) Is there anything I can do that does not involve reformatting the hard drive?

It means what it says. The "computer person" formatted it wrongly/ unsuitably. it needs to be formatted again.

  • How to fix the volume on a Macbook Pro

    Hello, Apple afficionados.
I've been having an issue with my laptop recently and am wondering if any of you would be kind enough to help me (yes, I acknowledge that I may end up having to bring my laptop in for a technical repair.)
I have, I believe, the latest MacBook Pro, the 2011 version. 15'
This August will make two years since I had it
Last December or early January, I removed the headphones from the audio jack and noticed that the speak icon in the upper right-hand corner has greyed out. Whenever I press F10, F11, or F12, a circle-with-a-line-through-it appears. Whenever I place headphones in, the volume returns.
I had one friend tell me to look into the audio jack and see if there is a red or green light. I see no light at all; it is just pitch black in there.
A while ago, when I would remove the audio jack, the volume would be gone for a few minutes, but then it would return, to where I had normal volume and did not need something plugged into the audio jack to have audio.
Another friend suggested that I access the Activity Monitor and Force-Quit the core audio. That has not worked either.
I'm not sure what to do, and any help would be greatly appreciated!
Oh, and as of 3/12/13, my operating system is Mac OS X Version 10.7.5. I have a 2.3 GHz (GigaHertz ?) Intel Core i5. Also, I have a $ GB 1333 MHZ (MegaHertz?) memory. All software is up to date.

    It didn't help
I found something, however. If I click "System Preferences", then "Sound", and then "Output", when my headphones aren't in the audio jack, under "Name" it reads "Digital out" and under "Type", it reads "Headphone port". There's no sound. However, when I plug in my headphones and select "Use audio port for: Sound Input", the volume comes out normally, as if there are no headphones, even though my headphones are plugged in. The sound comes out normally. Hopefully, that doesn't sound confusing lol.
If i can't truly get my Mac's sound back to normal, then I'll just plug in my headphones and select to use them for sound input. If I select "Use audio port for: Sound Input", the music transmits through my headphones.
    Oh well.
Thanks for your help, though, sanjampet
