HT2435 Font locations

Is it possible to specify font locations? Creating a custom location that would be automatically accessible by all apps requiring access to fonts, as with the several system font folders.
Also, if shortcuts to the actual fonts we're placed in the custom font location, would apps still find them?
I am thinking of writing a font manager app that will allow its users to create font libraries, and activate/deactivate them to keep their font lists minimal. This is just one of the features but I probably won't be going ahead with it if its not possible.

No condescension meant. They were just factual answers.
You are of course certainly free to write a font manager if you wish, but for less than $100, you could save yourself the weeks of work writing and debugging an app you can obtain online in minutes. I would imagine that much of your time is worth more than $100?
As a self training and experimentation project, it could still be fun. As you said, it's up to you. But as I noted, why waste your time when there are already long standing apps which already do what you want? If you hope to undercut their prices as a commercial or shareware product, then best wishes to you.
Cheapest price I found for Suitcase Fusion 5 was directly from Extensis for $99.95. Couldn't even guess why Amazon would be charging $111 for the same full version item. FontExplorerX Pro for Mac is $89.
If you do try Suitcase or FEX, do note that the defaults are to store the fonts you add to their interfaces in a file vault. I see no point to that at all. In Suitcase, I set the preference to activate fonts "In place". Which means (as I would guess you aware) that they are activated from any folder or drive the fonts are on. They don't need to be in any specific place at all. You can make any number of sets you want to activate fonts for the project you are doing at the time. Deactivate them when you're done.

  • [CS5 - JS] Font location

    Hi,
I need to get the "location" property for all fonts in my document but when I'm on a Mac sometimes I get "System Font" instead of a real path.
For those fonts I also have the "Reveal in Finder" button disabled form the "Find Font" panel within InDesign.
If I open the same document in Windows I don't have any problem getting the font path (C:\Windows\Fonts\Arial.ttf) for every font.
What's up with these fonts in Mac?
    Thanks

    Hey!
You may take a look here: http://bit.ly/aRAQBQ
Of course that's for Find/Change missing fonts, but it can be modified easily.
This is based on font's used in document also available in Type->Find Font.
    Hope that helps.

  • HT2435 Font not showing

I installed a font. I see it in my font library, but it does not show up when I try to use it on Text Edit or PSE. I wonder if I am missing a step somehow.

There must be something in the font's encoding that Adobe doesn't like. If you run the font through an application like Font Validator it shows several errors. I guess Adobe apps are more stringent with fonts than other applications.

  • Using fonts located in Fontbook in Word

I am trying to use a foreign language font which I have found in the Fontbook application but for some reason it does not come up as a font in Microsoft Word 2004. Can anyone please tell me how to make the fonts in Fontbook available for use in other applications.

What font and what language exactly are you talking
about? MS Office cannot do certain scripts and may
not recognize the fonts for them -- Devanagari is
one. Also in Unicode apps you normally switch
languages by changing keyboard layouts rather than by
    changing fonts.
Hi Tom, I am trying to use Arial Hebrew. How would I then change a keyboard layout? I have used Hebrew fonts in OS9.2 previously without a problem.

  • OT-Font locations

Where does Extensis Font Fusion store fonts?
I gave Suitcase a tryout and have had nothing but problems with PDF exports from InD; I want to re-install Font Agent Pro; don't have a clue where to look for my library. Anybody know?
    Thanks.

Yup, I'm afraid so. The responsibility for Adobe/Apple font liaison is just now transitioning away from me to Christopher Slye, but I made a nice list of outstanding issues for him and our test team to follow up on, and this is on it.
As I've written elsewhere, the whole notion that we have to identify a "primary" script or codepage for a font is kind of broken in today's world of multi-script fonts. Apple's attempts to do it sometimes mess up, and so do Adobe's. (Some of our applications have similar problems, even outside of OS X.) We hope to revisit the whole issue in the future.

  • Font location/library for Motion 5 fonts?

I've been using the Meloriac font in a Motion 5 project.
I would now like to use that font in an accompanying project
    I'm creating in Premiere.
It does not show up in Premiere's font list, nor can I find it
in my User/Library/fonts or HD/Library/fonts or in any of
    the disabled font folders.
Nor does "Meloriac" show up when I do a spotlight search
or "find" search, or look for it in Font Book.
Doest Motion 5 have a separate library for certain fonts?
How would I access the Meloriac Font for use in other apps?
I hope I'm just missing something obvious here.
    Thanks.

  • Removing fonts

I'm having font problems with InDesign CS5. I used Font Book to turn off practically everything, but the incorrect font substitution persists. When I looked in the Fonts folder in my Library, I saw that many nonessential fonts are still there.
I suspsect that these extras were added manually, at times when they didn't show up in one app or another. Where can I find a list of the ones I can take out without breaking the system?

  • [SOLVED] Lousy fonts with .chm viewer for Linux

I installed the .chm file viewer HelpExplorer 3.0 in both Windows XP and Arch Linux (chm = compiled HTML help file).  In Windows XP, with default fonts installed, the fonts in text read with this viewer appear crisp, sharp and anti-aliased.  In Arch with KDE 3.5.7, on the other hand, the fonts appear fuzzy, grainy and don't seem to be anti-aliased, in contrast with their appearance in all other apps (except for a few such as Dillo) which render text good-looking, sharp and anti-aliased.
HelpExplorer for Linux was provided as a tarball that included a precompiled 'helpexplorer' binary.  The program doesn't seem to allow for customizing font settings.
The following fonts are installed in Arch (in /usr/share/fonts/):
    ttf-bitstream-vera-1.10-5 is installed by default
gsfonts 8.11-4 is installed by default
PostScript Type 1 fonts installed: Century Schoolbook, Nimbus, URW Bookman, URW Gothic, URW Palladio
ttf-ms-fonts-2.0-1 (Microsoft TTF: Andale Mono, Arial, Comic, Courier, Georgia, Impact, Tahoma, Times New Roman, Trebuchet)
    font-bh-ttf-1.0.0-3 (Luxi BH)
xorg-fonts-100dpi-1.0.1-1 (courier, helvetica, lucida, new century, times)

What do I need to do to improve the font appearance in this program in Linux?
Last edited by RobF (2007-10-02 18:06:46)

I found a solution of sorts by installing and running the Windows version of HelpExplorer in Wine or Crossover.  There is still very little control over fonts but when I enlarge the default font (with 2x CTRL-+) I do get a nice-looking anti-aliased Times New Roman font, and this solution would be my preferred way of reading .chm files in Linux (i.e. better than KchmViewer or Xchm).
    Recap of the problem:
    1. The .chm viewer HelpExplorer Viewer 3.0 when installed in Windows XP renders fonts crisp and clear and anti-aliased.
    2. The Linux version of HelpExplorer Viewer 3.0 (delivered as a precompiled executable in a tarball) doesn't render fonts antialiased, regardless of what I tried, and they look grainy and unattractive.
    3. The Windows version of HelpExplorer Viewer 3.0 when installed and run in Arch in Wine or Crossover does render the default font they offer (looks like Times New Roman) fairly crisp and clear and anti-aliased, at least at the enlarged setting.
Can someone explain to me what might be going on?  Why is it that the Linux version cannot render fonts anti-aliased when the Windows version running in the emulator in Linux can?  Is there something that I have to change in my fonts config, fonts location, symlinks or path to get the anti-aliased fonts to work in HelpExplorer in Linux?
