HT2476 Address Book Failure

In Contacts, 'All Contacts' and 'All iCloud' show no records. Individual group records are available.

Have you tried using Disk Utility to repair permissions? You might try that first to see if it helps. If not, have you deleted any fonts recently? That could also cause Address Book not to launch. You should check your /System/Library/Fonts folder to see if you have all of these fonts:
Apple LiGothic Medium.dfont
AppleGothic.dfont
AquaKanaBold.otf
AquaKanaRegular.otf
Courier.dfont
Geneva.dfont
Helvetica.dfont
Keyboard.dfont
LastResort.dfont
LucidaGrande.dfont
Monaco.dfont
Osaka.dfont
OsakaMono.dfont
Symbol.dfont
Times.dfont
ZapfDingbats.dfont
If you do, it's possible that one or more could have become corrupted and it (they) need replacing. If you're missing any of them, which ones are they? Various system applications require certain fonts or they will not launch.
Hope this helps,
Mulder

I am unable to add contacts to my address book nor can I edit the existing one.  When I try, the phone locks up and I have to do a reboot.  After the restart the phone show the error message above.
    Solved!

Deleted  Windows Live Messenger and rebooted.  Everything now working normally.

  • Address Book failure

Everytime I open my Address book it crashes.  I cannot access or edit any data.  What can I do?

In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/
com.apple.AddressBook.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you want to make your user library permanently visible, run the below command in Applications/Terminal.
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/
You will need to do that after any updates.

  • Address book is empty after hard drive failure followed by timeline backup from Drobo

Imac has been running very hot, hot enough to fry an  egg. It had a HD failure during this time and when the HD was replaced I expected the heating issue to be resolved as well. However it was not and so it has been at Apple store for a week as they try to find out what is causing the overheating. They decided it was because the RAM was running at 100% and yet could not find out why.  Backup was restored from a drobo raid.  They decided it was best to completely wipe it clean and then to start adding the apps back one at a time. I dont really know how to do this and I am concerned that right now with only safari and address running it is getting VERY hot again. There are 3 external HD connected. I dont know how but my address book is empty and I dont have evernote any more and I am confused as to what to do next and how to deal  with this overheating issue. I would appreciate any and all suggestions but please dont get too technical with me as I am probably much older than most if not all of you and work best with visual instruction. I follow every instruction EXACTLY so if Im told to look for  a specific app or file or whatever and it is called something different than the instruction I am given I will never make the connection so please if you can help be extremely accurate in your instructions. With trepidation and frustration I anxiously await HELP!

I think you were probably given bad advice to wipe your drive. That's the sort of advice people give when they don't know what to do and just want to get rid of you. So my suggestion is to restore all your data from the last Time Machine backup that was made before the drive was wiped. Do you know when that was?

  • Address book searching failures revisited

I tried the solution given here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6992129
However, if I type "rag" in the address book search field, it finds two contacts without highlighting any string within them. Furthermore, I can't see "rag" there.
    Any explanations?

  • Macbook sleeping failure: address book?

    Hello all,
A question from a Dutch guy about a sleeping issue with my Mackbook.
I use an old Macbook pro as a mediaplayer. Therefor i like to keep it standby the whole time, but in sleep in times i don't play any music. The sleeping is realy impredictable. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn't.
I thought this was the solution, and followed all the steps.
    My Maverics can't sleep!!
But today my Macbook failed to sleep again.
pmset -g Shows Adressbooksour again. Today it says:
sleep                3 (sleep prevented by coreaudiod, iTunes, Plex Media Serv, AddressBookSour, screensharingd)
Screensharing can be ignored. It's only running now to find out why it did not sleep. I know it won't sleep with screensharing on, but it wasn't running when i found out the macbook was still awake.
The other processes mention do vary from time to time (i'll try to make notes from now on) but i believe  AddressBookSour is a constant factor in this in this problem.
I think Itunes and Plex media seder aren't supposed to give problems for this? I always keep them open (itunes not playing of course). It's very well possible that if i play itunes, stop it, and stop screen sharing, it will sleep perfectly again. Till the next problem.
About the AdressBookSour, or other address book related things:
Adressbooksourcesync is still not on my computer after the removal, but it did create a new:
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
i only use this machine as a media player, so it's no problem for me to get permanently rid of the adress book on this computer if it causes problems.

I want to say that since you've been syncing your iPhone with your Macbook it will not erase the data on your iPhone, but it will add the data from your iPhone to your Macbook. I'm not 100% sure on this though, but I am sure there are others on this board that will be able to give you a 100% answer.
One way I am sure will work is if you sign up for MobileMe. It's free for the first 2 months and you can cancel it after this process is done. With MobileMe, it will automatically sync your contacts, calendars, and bookmarks with Apple's server, and any computer you set it up on. Which means you can setup MobileMe to work on your Macbook and once it's done syncing with your iPhone it will ask you to load the contacts into your MacBook via MobileMe. I like MobileMe because I can load pictures up to it from my iPhone, create an online album for people to see, save and backup files on their server and access them from anywhere (even my iPhone) and the simple fact that I never have to worry about losing my iPhone. With the 3.0 software, Apple even included a find your iPhone feature so if you lose your iPhone you can wipe it, send text messages to it, and see exactly where it is located at.

  • Mail, Address Book, iCal, Safari problems after 10.4.6 update

Updated to 10.4.6 from 10.3.9 via purchased Tiger disks, and have been having problems with Apple basic applications.
Address Book opens, then freezes and must Force Quit.
iCal opens, then freezes and must Force Quit.
Mail opens, but cannot retrieve or send. Cannot Quit Mail, and must Force Quit.
Safari opens, and runs okay, until two letters of text are entered into a search box. I was able to work around this problem by going to Safari > Preferences > Autofill.
I unchecked AutoFill Web Forms "Using info from my Address Book card", and now I can enter text in a Search Box in Safari. I would also get a freeze when I would click Edit on that line.
When switching to a backup User Account, all these applications seem to run fine.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Please Help! Suddenly unable to open Mail, Address Book etc

This morning when I woke up my IBook my Mail was still open from yesterday. When I tried to open ICal it kept crashing. So I restarted and then suddenly ITunes, Mail, Address Book and ICal would not open at all!! (However, it seems that iPhoto, Appleworks, Safari etc is fine).
I do have a IPhone, but haven't synced in a week or so. Not sure that that would be relevant at all.
The other weird thing that has happened, is that all the info on the top right hand corner of my menu bar (my airport, date, weather snitch, spotlight etc) disappeared a few weeks ago. It has been blank there ever since. When I just did a check of those applications ( internet connect, weather snitch) they also didn't open now.
Thanks in advance for any advice at all...
BTW, I just ran verify disk, and it stopped with this error message:
" the underlying task reported failure on exit" - The volume needs to be repaired.
Really hoping that someone can help me with this!

Hi ALSVLA, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!

  • Cannot print from Address Book! Print freezes and will not proceed.

I want to print an address list for Christmas cards. When I select the Group, select all and select Print I get the option box. I then select my printer and use the down arrow to open the dialog box that shows I am printing from Address Book and gives the different forms I can use (ie list, label, envelope) as well as the fields to include in the list. Once I have everything selected I click the Print radio button. All of the information under the Address Book options line disappears. Print remains highlighted and my printer Que never opens or appears. If I manually open the printer there is no print job showing. At this point the Address Book application is frozen. I cannot select cancel on the print dialog box (I can click it, but it does not highlight and it does not close the dialog box! In order to get out of this situation I have had to close Address Book. The quit option on the menu does work and Force Quit is unnecessary.
I actually spoke with AppleCare on this issue on Friday 05 Dec 2008. The tech I spoke with knew of no other such situations, but when I started checking on this discussion page I see a posting from REECO from clear back on 24 Sept 2008. His posting can be found at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8161605&tstart=0
The technician had me do several things. One was to pull my Caches folder out of my system Library folder. He also had me remove some Address Book preference items. The end result of these actions was a Mac Pro that would not boot! (The failure followed an Address Book crash with a "KERPROTECTIONFAILURE" and the message that some QualityMedia plugin might have created the problem!)(I could find no such plug in either on my system or via Google search!) The tech had asked me to boot to safe mode by booting while holding down the shift key untill the spinning gear appeared. The machine never progressed to a successful boot! I ended up having to use a 2nd hard drive and physically place it in internal slot 1 on my Mac Pro proceeding to reinstall Tiger! The bad news is that this did NOT solve my printing problem.
If I am attempting to print from a new install with just the Apple address card and the Owner's card in Address book the print proceeds fine. Once I import my data I am back to the same print failure.
Some diagnostic steps I have tried. I have tried USB local printers and bonjour printers. I have used Epson and Canon printers. I have tried to print to a PDF. I have tried printing from another computer (12 inch PowerBook) with identical results!
At this point I am going to call AppleCare Monday morning and see if anyone there has any more suggestions. Any suggestions this forum has will be received gratefully!

I was having the same crash or "just not print" problem as seen in other posts. I was able to fix it however, by making changes in some of the address cards I was going to print. By editing the "parent", "child", "spouse" fields which will get added to the name line of the label, I was able to get labels to print (or pdf preview) without difficulty.
I did not try and determine exactly what the problem was, but basically did a data cleanup. Since I didn't know that those fields would print, I had previously included information beyond just a name in the fields, like birthdates and such, eg. "Jimmy - 12/1/05". After either removing the fields entirely where I didn't really need them, or just cleaning them down to names only, they printed just fine. I'd considered trying to disable the feature entirely but the data cleanup was not hard for a dozen or so names.

  • Address Book -- Importing CSV File created by Numbers

I'm trying to import a csv file generated from MS outlook into address book. When I attempt to import the csv file that Outlook created, Address Book is able to recognize the file. However, I need to modify the file before importing. To do that, I opened in Numbers, deleted some columns and renamed some columns. Then, I exported from Numbers as a .CSV file. However, when I try to import the .CSV file created by numbers, I get the error that I have modified with Numbers, I get the error "Text file import failure".
Does anybody know why address book can't import a CSV file created by Numbers?

Many people have run into this problem, including myself. I had worked many hours on a spreadsheet in Numbers, exported to CSV, and received the error message when trying to import into Address Book. The answers to this dilemma are out there, but tidbits of the whole answer are spread around discussion boards. So I hope to consolidate those answers here.
The main problem for me -- and it's reasonable to assume that others receive the "Text File import error" for the same reason -- is that 1) I had commas in my spreadsheet, and 2) I had hidden RETURNs in the spreadsheet. Once I got rid of those two things, I had no problem importing into Address Book.
    Deleting Commas>
The problem with commas in your spreadsheet is that the CSV format uses commas to distinguish when a new cell is formed. So having other commas will inevitably confuse Address Book during the attempted import. I didn't have too many commas in my spreadsheet, so I was able to quickly remove them. Yet, if you have dozens or hundreds of cells with commas in them, you'll need an easier solution. I imagine opening Number's Inspector>Cell Inspector>Format will have the solution of removing commas from, say, currency amounts or something else. Yet, how many commas arise in contact information? Perhaps the easiest way is to use the same method of removing those hidden RETURNs. Read on...
    Deleting Hidden RETURNs>
You can't see them, and I couldn't find a "show invisibles" option in Numbers. So you need to search and find them. Yet, how do you search for something hidden? Do the Command-F thing to bring up the search field. The search bar should automatically be ready to search what you type. Hitting the Return key will do nothing for you, but hitting Shift-Option-Return will (you'll likely need to hit Return again to actually perform the search). Numbers will point out how many times these hidden returns are in your spreadsheet, which cells contain them, and give you the option to automatically replace them with something else (a space is a safe option). You can do the same search and replace with commas too.
Save your spreadsheet, export it as CSV, and -- as long as the only errors stemmed from commas and hidden RETURNs -- you shouldn't have a problem having Address Book import it. Good luck!
PS- After importing my spreadsheet, I noticed that some of my Smart Groups in Address Book were not showing some people who should have automatically been in there. The problem was that the Smart Group search had straight apostrophes in it, but the imported contact had curved apostrophes. The computer saw these as two unrelated characters. After some copying and pasting, the problem was solved.

Time Machine Locked after MacBook Air reformatted. My MacBook Air was overfull due to an Address book issue (duplication) so after many attempts to clear space, I ended up wiping out the system and reloading Lion. This resulted in the Time Machine thinking that it was now connected to a different computer. Apparently this diables the existing information.
Now I can see that the back-ups exist (back to Sept 2012) but they are greyed out, therefore unavailale to restore. Again, this seems like an issue that shouldn't be happening. The whole point of the Time Machine is to enable reinstatement of data after catastrophic failure. What if my computer actually had to be replaced due to a hardware issue? How would I beableto restore anything?
    The path already (unsuccessfully) taken;
Open Library on the computer, Open Time Machine, Select Correct date, drill down to correct data you wish to restore, click "Restore".
This did not work because the correct date was greyed out. Restore key was greyed out.

  • Restore iTunes and Address Book from iPhone

Ok, so my G5 iSight had a a hard drive failure and I have had it replaced with a shiny new hard drive and been upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard. So far, so good. Now I would like to have all my iTunes and Address book data back. Currently the only copy I have is on my iPhone 3G.
How exactly do I restore all this information to iTunes, from my iPhone 3G, without iTunes overwriting the iPhone and deleting all the of very precious data I have on it?
    Any step-by-step instructions gratefully received.

How are you installing Snow Leopard on a G5?
Disregarding this, I'm not sure you're allowed to...but seeing that this post hasn't yet been removed, I think I can comment...
For the music part, you can use iRip.
For the rest, check out this Google search. I'm getting blocked from the sites right now, but hopefully you'll have better luck with your internet.
