HT2486 How do I import existing Outlook contact groups into Mac Address Book?

After months of problems with Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Mac, I am switching to Mac Mail. I seem to have successfully imported my individual contacts into Address Book. However, I have been unsuccessful in figuring out how to import group contacts into Mac Mail.
So far I have created .txt files, (a separate one for each group), listing each e-mail address in that group separated by a comma. Can I input this information into Address Book somehow? If not, how else can I import my groups into Address Book in a more efficient way than manually entering them? Manually dragging and dropping names into each new Address Book group is not an option, since I  have about 50 groups with 20-50 people in each of them. It would take me extraordinary amounts of time to do that, not to mention the frustration.
A second question: There are many duplicates listed in my address book. When I select Card>Look for Duplicates, it tells me that No duplicates are found. They most definitely exist, however. How can I erase them without having to manually delete each duplicate?

You can't transfer the groups, you'll need to do it the hard way.
As for the duplicates, how many accounts do you have in your Address Book?

  • Importing .csv or .tab files into MAC Address Book

Trying to get my MS Outlook Contacts onto my new MAC but for some reason the MAC address book will not recognize the .csv or .txt files that outlook generates in its Export process.  I've opened the files in excel and in Numbers and they look fine - the MAC just doesn't like them for some reason.
Anyone out there encounter this problem and possibly have a solution?

There are converters available, online or downloadable so get one, export a .csv, convert it to .vcf and import that.

Use the usb cable that comes with your iPhone to connect it to your Mac. Read the directions that came with the iPhone. Post in the iPhone forums where the iPhone gurus are. Google... Look to the right of your post in the "More Like This" column...

One option is forwarding your Outlook contacts as vCard files which can be imported by the Address Book on your Mac, followed by being synced with your iPad.
In Outlook, select all contacts and at the menu bar select forward as vCard. Each contact will be a separate vCard file. Send the email to an email account you are accessing with the Mail app on your Mac.
Save the attached vCard files in a folder created on your Desktop or in whichever chosen location for the folder. At the Address Book menu bar, go to File and select Import navigating to the folder that incudes the vCard files. Open the folder to select.

  • Is it possible to export my outlook contacts to my macbook address book?

Hi! I am trying to export my outlook contacts to my MacBook address book, is it possible or should I type every contact again? thanks!

There is a 3rd party application called o2m that does this and I can vouch for the fact that it works - a client of mine was going crazy until we found and used it.
Outlook sure makes it difficult to export mail stuff, doesn't it?
    Best of luck.

Is there any way to automatically import a contact group from Mac Outlook Express5 to Mail? An AppleScript possibly?
The only alternative that I have seen is to copy/paste each individual email address from Outlook to a new group in Mail; one-at-a-time, extremely time consuming for large newsletter lists.

  • How can I import iPhone contacts into Mac Address book

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and am in the process of trying to dump my Windows PC.
All of my important contacts are on my iPhone. How can I get those contacts into my Mac Address Book?
The same question goes for the music (ripped from CD) and my video files that are on my iPhone? The media is not that big of a deal because I can easily transfer it from my PC to my Mac but I assume I am not the only one in the world trying to do this and that Apple would make it very easy for MSFT Windows users to easily migrate to Macs.
I must be an idiot but I don't see any option in iTunes to transfer the data from my iPhone into iTunes and/or the Address Book.
    Thanks

The iPhone's primary function is NOT a word processor or a spread sheet analyzer.
I didn't say, nor was I trying to imply ANYTHING of the sort. You should read what I provided again a little slower and in it's entirety, not taking this out of context, which you made into Apples and Oranges.
It IS an iPod, a device designed to store and play music (in addition to being a browser and a phone).
It is a phone, an iPod, and an internet device, which supports transferring iTunes content from iTunes on a single computer ONLY.
Making it difficult to transfer my legal music from my iPhone to my Mac does not make me want to go out and buy more Apple products or Apple software.
Good, then don't - no skin off my back. I couldn't care less if you want to remain a Windows sufferer. All this doesn't come from Apple. Much of it comes from those who OWN the distribution rights for content sold thru the iTunes Store.
All of Apple's commercials imply how easy the user experience is over Windows. Well, in this case, they missed the boat BIG TIME!
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but let me get this straight. You will likely need to transfer much more than just music from your Windows PC to your Mac and if so, how do you plan on accomplishing this? If you are transferring Word and Excel files, photos, and any other data, you won't be using an iPhone for this, so I don't see the big deal with transferring your iTunes library along with all other data being transferred.
I understand that the iPhone was not designed to be used as a backup. However, you allow the contacts to be merged in but not the music that I legally installed (but didn't purchase from the iTunes store).
I don't allow anything - this is a user to user help forum only.
As I provided in my first post in this thread - the sync process for contact information, calendar events, and bookmarks with an iPhone is bidirectional with the supported application on your computer. This is a sync process by definition of syncing - which is not the same for other data such as iTunes content and photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1296
Apple wants to make it difficult unless I purchased the music from iTunes.
No, Apple or really those who own the distribution rights or the copyright holders for content sold thru the iTunes Store wants to make this difficult. Content sold thru the iTunes Store is set up by Apple to be a break even - which is included with the Apple stockholder's report. Apple makes their profit via sales of the iPod and iPhone. The bulk of the iTunes Store revenue goes to those who own the distribution rights or the copyright holders for the content.
In addition, if my hard disk suffered a crash and I lost all my music it just seems stupid not to be able to pull it off my iPhone (yes, I know data should be backed up on a different drive, and mine is, but I am sure a lot of people do not back up their data).
Maintaining a backup of your data is important for this very reason, and for other reasons which is not Apple's responsibility. I believe iTunes includes an occasional warning message to backup your iTunes library (which can be turned off), and iTunes includes an option to transfer content purchased from the iTunes Store from an iPod or iPhone - since the overwhelming majority of this content includes DRM protection required by those who own the distribution rights or the copyright holders.
The iPhone was not designed as an external storage device or as a backup device - end of story. If someone chooses not to maintain a backup, they are playing Russian roulette with their data. Maintaining a backup is important regardless the platform, but even more so when running Windows with constant virus, adware, and spyware concerns.

Iam trying to download data from a group in my address book into Numbers.  When I click on the data to move and drag to Numbers nothing happens.  Using OS X ver 10.9.2 iMac

With Numbers 3.2 (released April 2014) drag and drop works on my machine again, either onto the canvas or into an existing table.
What also works (as Wayne described): select multiple contacts, command-c to copy, and (after clicking the canvas or a cell) command-v to paste.

  • When typing a Contacts group into Mail address, it inserts duplicates

MacBook Air using Mavericks. I have a Group set up in Contacts. When I type the name of that group into the BCC field in Mail, I get every name in the group at least twice.

I had similar problems. In Leopard, I used to be able to just drag one or more Groups from the Address Book to the address field in the Mail message, and it would go in unexpanded, as per the Preference I have set in Mail. With Snow Leopard, when I do this all the individual addresses go into the address field PLUS the unexpanded Group.
However, I found that if I Select the group in Address Book, Copy it, then Paste it into the Mail message address field, all is well. That is, the Group goes into the field unexpanded, and the individuals in the group all receive the message with "To: Undisclosed Recipients" as I intended.

  • How to Import Outlook Address Book into Mac Address Book?

I will be making an employment change and need to import my pc Outlook addresses into my mac email addresses. After repeated emails to Apple and apple support phone calles no one can help because I am not going from a mac to a mac. Unbelieveable. Actually it's not-the lack of customer services these days should not surprise me.
Anyway, anyone know how to do to save me having to re-type hundreds of addresses?
    Thanx!

You need to export your Outlook contacts into a VCard format.
There are many programs out there that will do this for bulk jobs. But, you can do it for free if you are willing to do it manually.
Select each contact one at a time from Outlook. Then, go up to the menus (I think it's the file menu) and choose export, then choose to export it as a VCard.
I'm not in front of a PC. But, I remember doing it that way for about 80 something cards when I moved from my PC.
Once you have them in a VCard format, you can just drag and drop them into Apple's Address Book.
It takes some time to do it this way if you have a ton of contacts. But, it does work.
I think the PC format might be VCF but it is VCard.
Apple uses a different format of VCard than Microsoft does. So, you won't be able to use Microsoft's Export to export all the cards at one time.
That method will not allow you to import them into Apple's address book since they are different formats.
But, it will work if you export each individual record one at a time, and then drag each one into Apple's Address Book.
Additionally, if you find a web-mail service like GMail or Yahoo, or something like that that can synchronize with both the PC and the Mac, then you could try moving it to one of those services and then to Apple's address book.

You can also read Apple's document on the subject here:

    Hope this helps.
