HT2486 How to backup my Macbook Air Contacts?

I would like to periodically backup my Contacts in my Macbook Air. How do I do it?

The easiest thing to do is to use File > Export > Address Book Archive.

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • Using TimeCapsule to backup 4 Macbook Airs, that are hardwired (ethernet) to office network

Our current setup includes 4 MacBook Airs that are hardwired to an office network that services 100+ office personnel.  We are simply looking for an efficient way to backup all MacBook Airs "automagically".  If we continue to hardwire to the existing network, is it possible to also "wirelessly backup" using Time Machine while connected through ethernet?  How might we go about this?

Hardwiring Macbook Airs must be fun.. they don't have proper ethernet ports only usb to ethernet adapters.
If there is a file store somewhere in the network that can be formatted HFS+ or create a drive image that is HFS+ you might be able to backup using Time Machine without doing anything. Even with a Time Capsule you could ethernet connect it to the network and point TM backups to it.
Generally it is better for your setup to stick to one setup.
But you can do what you want if you must!!
You need to run two different network IP address ranges.. so for example if your ethernet network is 192.168.x.x then the TC on its default address 10.0.1.1 will be fine.. You cannot use this if the main network is the same ip range so you might need to fix the TC to another network range.
It is easier to leave the TC in default router mode.. don't worry about errors that it cannot get wan connection. Just set to ingore.
In each air, set a static IP for wireless.. so using the example at default.. each air would have ip address, eg, 10.0.1.10 for the first one.. 10.0.1.20, for the second and so on.
    Set the subnet to 255.255.255.0
Do not set gateway (router) or dns.
The air can now reach the TC.. if you are close enough it should connect on the 5ghz band.. you can force this with using a different wireless name for 5ghz.
Or split them to have some on 2.4ghz and some on 5ghz.
It will then work happily without affecting their connection to the main ethernet network.
Point Time Machine to the TC and start the backup.. do each one, when the last one completes.. as the initial backup will take a few hours and it is pointless simply getting them all to fight together to get access. Once the initial backup is done further backups are fairly small incremental assuming the computers are not changing lots of big files.
Also remember this is a backup in a single disk device.. it has no backup itself.. anything you delete from a computer will delete on the backup eventually.. when TM is good and ready.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can't back up a MacBook to iCloud, as there isn't enough storage to make backups of a Mac. Instead, you can use services like CrashPlan, but the best way to back up your Mac is by using Time Machine or a cloning app like Carbon Copy Cloner onto an external drive. Doing this, you can be sure your data is with you everywhere

  • How do I get MacBook Air to see Windows Home Server and show it in Finder?

New to Mac (having used Windows for years) so this may be a dumb question. Have a MacBook Air (new) and have a home network with a Windows Home Server on the network. I can't figure out how to get the MacBook Air to see the Windows Home Server. It doesn't show up in Finder and I think my lack of understanding of Mac OS it inhibiting me from figuring out how to get the MacBook Air to see the server and show it so I can navigate to the files on it, etc. Any suggestions on how to do this or where I can go to read about it to figure it out?
    Thanks!!!

If the Windows Home Server functions like a file server, try the following: From the Finder, Click the Go menu at the top of the screen, and choose Connect To Server. You will be presented with a dialog box to enter the server IP address.
You may also want to open the Preferences for the Finder from the File menu, and make sure connected servers are supposed to show up on the desktop and in Finder windows.
Disclaimer: I have not used a PC for 15 yrs, so this is general information. This is the process I use to connect to other Mac servers and to several online WebDav servers.

  • How to identify fake macbook air

    hi guys,
i have been using macbook pro for quite sometime an very happy with it. now i am looking for second unit. i cam across a second hand unit of 2013 macbook air. how do i make sure this unit is original? are there any fake product in the market? how do i recognise them?
    regards

You could check the product serial number against the online identification sites, that of course
could be faked. Also, if the computer has an OS X and is able to tell you in System Profiler or
other listing of internal hardware, a regular PC hardware would appear a bit different than Mac.
With the questionable product in your possession or close proximity for inspection, you may
find more information. If you can start it & read the information inside, much more is learned.
•How to identify your MacBook Air - Apple Support
Specifications could be cross-checked with online accessible databases, http://everymac.com
shows builds of Apple product listed and if you use an identify by serial number database, to
see what the alleged Apple or PC-fake isn't or is, that should be easy... Easier if you have it.

•Identify your Mac - Lookup unit by Serial Number or Model Number:
    https://www.powerbookmedic.com/identify-mac-serial.php
    http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/
If you have downloaded the MacTracker database, it can show you more information on each
model across nearly the entire brand. http://mactracker.ca is a source for this application D/L.
How to find your Mac's model and age? - ASC user tip
Some of these sites also offer visual identification of models, where to look for in-device
serial numbers, some may be hidden or inside; others visible if unit is On, in software.
Hopefully this helps somewhat. Also an indicator may be price. If a new Apple computer or
an iDevice relies on the original owner's Apple ID and their information, it may not be worth
owning unless they transfer it. If the unit has a tie-in to an AppleID and they haven't set it
up for a new user, you may have to take the unit to an Apple Authorized service provider to
have them help set up a new owner (appleID) if you don't know how. -- And take along the
original owner whose ID set up the Mac in the first place, so they can transfer ownership.
A fake product should not need an AppleID or it may have an illegal clone on board. A fake
would probably either be a hack- in tosh or a windows pc that looks like MacBook Air. Or a
copy made by some contractor to look like a Mac. You could look into the Apple site and
check to see how to inquire deeper, in Apple Legal site. Or how to report a fake.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How best to restore Macbook Air (OSX Lion) from backup?

So, I started up my Macbook Air yesterday and it wouldn't boot. Command-V at boot revealed that the filesystem is currupt; in particular, it hung up on a specific file (/private/var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/sqlindex-shm). The problem cannot be fixed by Disk Utility. The harddrive is encrypted with Filevault2.
Luckily, I have a backup (using CCC), but it is a day old (and that day had some important work and apps installed that I'd prefer not to reinstall). I installed Lion on a USB stick, booted up, and used CCC to clone the whole hard disk to an external USB drive. I could mount, but not write to, the corrupted drive. As expected, it had problems copying the particular corrupted file. So, I copied my day-old backup of the offending file to the external USB drive, and now I can boot my system off that. Yay!
But it wasn't without a hitch. Several apps seem to think that they hadn't been run before (like dropbox and textwrangler). I assume that this might be caused by the Volume name change? Everything SEEMS fairly normal, though. So, at this point, I wonder how to proceed. Here are my options, as I see them:
    1. Reformat the corrupt hard disk, and copy all files off the USB external HD to the newly formatted internal drive, and hope that there are no other issues with corrupt files that I didn't know about. If I do this, how do I format the internal drive so that the OS will know to boot off it? Should I encrypt it, or leave it unencrypted and then enable filevault2 again after booting off it successfully? How can I check that everything is OK once I successfully boot of the reconstituted internal drive?
    2. Install OSX Lion clean. I'd rather not do this, due to the problem of reinstalling apps, redoing cron jobs, etc. But at least this way I minimize the chances that other OS files are corrupt. If I choose this option, how can I minimize the pain of reinstalling apps? What about apps like MacTex and ParagonNTFS, that have files in places other than the Applications folder? Can I just copy those over, too?
So, which of these routes should I take? Or is there a third route that would be even better? Since I have full backups, it seems like I'm pretty flexible.
*(I should mention that for speed of backup, I excluded large, relatively expendable files, like VM hard disk files that I can remake, from my regular backups. So restoring from the day-old backup would be some trouble, on top of just restoring the old work.)

Thanks much, that seems to have worked!
(Now just have to figure out why the Time Machine backup didn't contain quite everything we expected; but I can always pop the old hard drive and get the last few things from there is necessary.)

  • Macbook Air Contacts does not retrieve my Yahoo Contacts

I've got my laptop a month ago with OS X Lion, then I upgraded to Mountain Lion...  I added my Yahoo account for "Mail, Contacts & Calendar"  successfully.   Now using my macbook air Mail, I can see/check my Yahoo mails.  With Calendar, I can also see my Yahoo calendar.  However, with Contacts, I could not see my Yahoo contacts.   There is a warning message in the 'Contacts' window that says: "The operation couldn’t be completed. • How to de-clutter MacBook Air Hard Disk?

    Hi,
My MacBook Air has a Flash Hard Drive capacity of 120.47 GB, of which only 26.22 GB are free.
Two heads, Backups (23.44 GB) and Others (25.92 GB) are taking up the lion's share of hard disk space.
I have a 1 TB External USB Disk connected.
How can I take off these choking files and place them on the 1 TB Disk if required?
    Regards
    Rahul

"Other" includes necessary system files. The amount of that on your boot volume isn't especially high.
First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
If you're using Time Machine to back up a portable Mac, some of the available space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of files you've recently deleted. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as "Backups." The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight as described here. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can also use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.
