HT2494 my imac is switching off my USB stick

I am new to using the iMac and still need to use a usb stick to transfer data from my computer to other devices.  I initially put an old usb stick that I had been using with the pc into one of the ports at the back of my mac and I got an error message that it was drawing too much power and has been disabled. A friend told me that this could be due to them being old and to get myself some new ones.
I purchased two Verbatum store n go drives one I put staight into the iMac which did not work and one into the pc where it was recognised but then into the imac where it was not seen even in finder. I put this usb back into the pc where it no longer worked. I then purchased a lexar jump drive and this is not seen in the iMac.
I am able to use a small printer on USB and we have a external hard drive for time machine.  My husbands stick which he has had for a couple of years also works.  Any one have an idea what is going on and how to resolve this, I need to be able to use a stick to transfer files.

Hello, some USB Flash drives simply use too much power, I think I'd try an AC powered USB Hub, Bus Power is no good...

  • How to make linux bootable off a usb stick on mac

Guys i was wondering how to make linux bootable off a usb stick on mac, since i dont have a optical drive in my mac, plus i need it for university

I have the same question, but parsed differently.  What people have tried answering here is:
how to (make linux (bootable off a usb stick on mac))
What I'm trying to find is:
how to make ((linux bootable off a usb stick) on mac)
That is, I don't want to boot from the usb stick on my mac; I want to write an ISO to a usb stick that's plugged into my Macbook Pro (Mavericks), then carry the stick to a different machine (several discarded Windows boxes in fact), plug it in there, and watch it boot on that machine.  I've done a bit of googling, but everything I find talks about making USB drives with content that can be booted on a Mac.  What I'm wondering is if it's possible to write to use my Mac to write bootable USB gadgets that work on other machines that aren't running OSX software.
Anyone know if this is discussed anywhere?  If not, what's the right forum to ask it on?  And how do I ask it so that I don't get yet another explanation of how to make something that will boot on my Mac?
I have several linux ISOs waiting.  Actually, I could do the job on one of several available linux boxes.  But I'd like to do it on my portable laptop, which at the moment is this Macbook Pro.

  • From time to time my imac is switching off all of the sudden, who knows what it could be?

Once every few days my imac (2010) is switching off all of the sudden. It is happening since a few weeks. Who knows what it could be?

  • Imac automatically switched off???

I installed airport extreme in my old imac g5 and it worked perfectly.
Since I also use my macbook pro, i seldom use my imac G5 until recently. I discovered that after about 3 minutes working, the computer automatically switched off. When restarted, the same problem re-occurs. Has it got anything to do with the installed airport extreme...i dont think so.
    Can someone help?

Hi, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 Forum!
You could try browsing, searching or posting in one of the iMac G5 Forums
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=134
where there is some discussion of similar issues.
You could check Applications > Utilities > Console - system.log for entries at around the time of the shutdown.
You could try an SMU reset
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733
There is a repair extension programme which may apply

  • IMac 333Mhz switches off shortly after switching on

I have a selection of old Macs, among them an iMac 333 Mhz tray-loading bondi blue. Whe I switch it on, it gives the chime and then switches off again. I suspect it has to do with the power supply, but I have no way of testing this. Any ideas what could be behind this?

It may be a shorted out flyback transformer. That is a problem with the first four versions (tray loaders) of the iMac. It has been reported here a fair number of times. With my Rev B (233 mhz) I was able to unplug the internal monitor (big multi-connector plug) and it booted all the way. Of course I couldn't see anything that way but it did confirm the fly back short. Those models don't handle heat well and tend to burn out after 4 or 5 years. After that I bought a PC monitor and adapter plug and am able to get some further use out of the old iMac.

  • IMac crashes. switches off with a loud 1sec buzz every 15secs.

iMac crashing with screen going black and a regular 1 second beep obout every 15 seconds. It can only be restarted by switching off the mains supply. The fault occurs at any stage of computer operation i.e. typing, reading files, manipulating graphics, and even when in screen saver mode. Anybody help?

I believe it's a RAM problem.  Try taking out the RAM and then putting it back in.  Maybe they came loose.  If that doesn't work, if you have 2 RAM sticks, try taking 1 out and restarting.  If the beeping/crash goes away, the other stick of RAM is bad.  If it does crash, try the other RAM stick.  You could try new RAM (which is pretty cheap these days).  If all else fails, it's probably an issue with the logic board and it will need repairing.
    Good luck!

  • My iMac doesn't recognise my USB stick?

I have some saved work on an 'Integral 4GB' USB stick that i want to load and print off on my imac. But i have plugged it into all 4 ports at the back and i cant find the drive anywhere? Please help!

First thing to try is to reset SMC.
    Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
If this does not help, contact Apple.
    Best.

  • After waking from sleep, iMac doesn't like my USB stick...

This is a problem that I consistently have with my iMac which is driving me nuts. When I'm at home, I leave my USB stick plugged into the iMac. Many times during the evening my iMac will go to sleep and wake up. If I try to access my USB drive at any time after the iMac has woken up, Finder freezes up and refuses to do anything, even if I force quit it. I end up having to unplug my USB stick from the iMac, which causes Finder to delete the desktop icons and throw an error message about "safely" removing the device in the future. If I plug the USB stick back in, it shows up and works just fine.
Does anyone else get this problem? I'm on an iMac 24", OS X 10.4.8, and the USB stick is a SanDisk mini Cruzer 1 GB.

This has been a problem with the Mini Cruzer for a long time. The only solution is to eject the drive before letting your Mac sleep, or purchasing a different drive. The last I read on this subject was that the Mini Cruzer does not recognize the Mac sleep settings properly and that San disk has no plans to resolve the issue.

  • Imac wont boot off windows usb flashdrive

I was able to create a bootable flash drive for windows in bootcamp. My imac(2010 running lion)'s superdrive is broken so I'm using usb to boot off of. I have refit/refind installed, the drive shows up with refit/refind but not from the normal efi menu. When I try to boot off of it form refit/refind it gives me an error "no bootable devices found". I heard that macs with superdrives can only boot off of a cd/dvd.
I tried booting off a 2012 macbook pro (with a superdrive) running mountain lion. It worked perfectly. So I guess it doesn't have to do with only booting from cd/dvd and the flashdrive is fine.
I don't know what to do to get my computer to recognize the flashdrive. The normal efi menu doesn't recognize it, but refit/refind does but that won't boot.

I updated just yesterday, any ideas? or comments?
What did you update from? Presumably you updated to Snow Leopard 10.6.2. Have you tried updating from the combo update on Apple's site rather than the incremental update via "Software Update"? That might fix this otherwise mysterious problem.

  • Why does my iMac screen keep switching off / going black?

After about one half hour of use my new iMac screen switches off / goes black.
The screen can be switched on by pressing the power button on the back on the machine a few times. It remains lit for about 20 seconds. This can comntinue for about half an hour when it stops switching off or when I give up.
I have conrtacted Apple but they have been unable to solve the problem.
The machine is just not fit for purpose as I cannot use it for work.
It appears from the internet that this is a recurring imac problem.
Please, what am I to do?

Call AppleCare (number is in the manual) and then request to speak to Customer Service. Be patient, organized and articulate and they will transfer you. When you get to speakt to someone then explain your problem and ask for their help. You should have all your receipts, invoices, trouble ticket numbers etc available for reference.
You can also take to an Apple Store in Spain, while this may not be convenient at least then an Apple person can see the machine and work on it.

  • Think M72e start windows 7 with usb stick inserted

I know in the scheme of things my M72e annoyance is pretty minor, but I am more curious than exasperated.
If I try to start the machine with a usb stick in any of the ports it won't boot into windows 7and I get a "No bootable partition in table" message and the machine just hangs there.
If I remove the usb stick and restart, it boots to windows 7 fine.
Obviously, i figured that the machine is trying to boot off the usb stick before the harddrive. So I went into the bios but there is no option to boot off the hardrive first.
I can press F12 and it gives me a one time option to boot off the hardrive but I don't want to have to do this everytime.
Anybody know why Lenovo in its wisdom hobbled the boot choices in the bios?
    Thanks,

  • My usb keyboard is no longer detected after the power was switched off

I sometimes relocate my Imac to another office and after the power has been switched off the computer no longer detects my usb keyboard.
This had happened several times now and sometimes it all of a sudden starts working again after a couple of hours (but it doesn't now).
The computer keeps searching for a wireless keyboard which I don't have. I have tried everything from switching off power again to reboothing, but nothing works. I have checked all USB ports with other devices and they all work. The problem is not the keyboard itself, because it does work when I plug it in to my MacBook.
    Anyone recognize this?

Yes, to a blue tooth mouse only. I have tried disabling the blue tooth connection, but when i restart my computer it automatically connects again.
I got the keyboard to start working again now by pressing all the keys one by one (in order to discharge them, read that somewhere). I helped. But how annoying is that?!
