HT2494 Usb super drive is not playing my dvds.  keeps ejecting them.  It is brand new

USB SUPER DRIVE IS NEW.  MAC IS NEW.  THE DRIVE IS NOT ACCEPTING MY DVDS.  KEEPS EJECTING THEM.
I HAVE THE MAC, 21.5 INCH INTEL BASED DESK TOP

I have the same issue wherein my external usb superdrive is ejecting the DVDs.
When I had the Snow Leopard, I was able to copy the DVDs into my hard drive, or even just watch DVD films.  Since I have the Mountain Lion, the DVD films which I used to be able to watch were not able to be read anymore ... it ejects them.
I did not notice it when I upgraded the Mountain Lion, because I did not watch any new DVDs.  Noticed this only couple of months back, and been searching for the solution.

Can anyone explain why my USB super drive will not play RedBox DVDs?

What Mac are you using with the USB SuperDrive?
Is this USB SuperDrive a third party drive or Apple's USB SuperDrive?
If this optical drive is Apple's own external USB SuperDrive, this only works with newer Macs that have no built-in optical drive any longer and WILL NOT work with older Macs that came with built-in optical drives.

External SuperDrive DVD player fix - RESOLVED!
This solution worked for my Superdrive, which I had installed in a USB external case, so now it can play movies using Apples DVD Player App, but additional steps may be needed, as I outline below.  I had removed the SuperDrive from my mid-2009 Macbook Pro 15" 2.53 ghz to install a second hard drive with Other World Computing's "Data Doubler" adapter, and mounted the SuperDrive in an OWC Value Line SuperSlim external case.
I don't know if the first two steps below are necessary, but I had done them first, because others suggested them as fixes before I found the solution in the 3rd step.
    1) I installed Apple's SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0, which is on Apple's support site at http://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201953
    2) Then I applied a fix on this page, http://www.hardturm.ch/luz/2011/10/how-to-make-the-macbook-air-superdrive-work-w ith-any-mac/comment-page-12/#comment-106449, using Text Wrangler to edit the preference file at /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist by adding code mbasd=1 between the two string values. However, that still did not resolve the problem. I left the preference file with the code “mbasd=1″ included, as outlined on that site.
    3) Then, I used the fix at http://macriot.com/mcrt/?p=2294 which requires modification of some code embedded into OS X’s DVDPlayback framework; essentially replacing the words “internal” with “external”
Now my external Superdrive plays movies using DVD Player.

  • DVD drive does not play some DVDs properly

    Hi,
My Macbook was purchased in 2007; So it is a bit old. I haven't used the DVD drive very often.
I bought two new DVDs from Amazon recently. However, when I played them in my Macbook using DVD Player, the disk pauses and skips very often, making it impossible to watch the DVD. In addition, the Player would display the "Skip over damaged data" warning.
I thought it was a problem with the software (DVD Player); so I installed the VLC player. Problems occurred as well. Disk would pause and then simply stop (the screen closes).
I thought that perhaps it was the problem with the Amazon DVD disk. So I played some other DVDs in my Macbook, with both DVD Player and VLC Player. There was NO problem at all with the other DVDs.
Then my conclusion was that the Amazon DVD was faulty. I requested a replacement, which they sent to me promptly within a day.
However, the same problem occured. The replacement DVD would not play properly in either DVD Player or VLC Player in my Macbook. It would pause and skip very frequenntly.
Now I began to suspect that maybe the Optical Drive was faulty. So I brought the DVD to my school and tried to play it in two computers: one PC (with VLC); the other Mac (DVD Player). To my surprise, the DVD played flawlessly in those two computers.
Now my conclusion is that the optical drive of my Macbook is faulty.
However, after doing some preliminary research on the internet, I find that replacing the internal optical drive is a difficult process. The alternative seems to be buying an external drive. But there seems to be concern about booting the computer (when the need arises) from an external optical drive.
    Questions:
    1. Is my conclusion justified? (That I have a faulty optical DVD drive)
    2. If the optical drive is faulty, then why do some DVDs play with no problem in my Macbook?
    3. Would you recommend replacing the internal drive or puchasing an external optical drive? What are the advantages and disadvantages to both?
    Thanks a lot!

Thanks again. I went ahead and deleted the DVD Player folder and the plist file.
The result is that it appeared to temporarily improve the playback of the DVD. For the first two hours, the DVD paused considerably less and each pause was of a relatively short duration. There was much less skipping. So the playback was almost tolerable, if I lower my standards.
However, after two hours, it reverted to its old ways. The pauses and skipping became so frequent and long (as before) to make the DVD simply unwatchable.
I don't know what to make of this.

  • Super drive does not recognize video DVDs-what wrong?

My iMac G5 running OS X 10.4.8 will not play commercial videos.
When I put any video in the drive, I get the following message:
    "Disk Insertion
The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer"
and I am given the choice of ingnoring it or ejecting it.
    Here is what the system profiler says about a video in the drive;

I used to be able to play Video DVDs. The hardware suddenly stopped recognizing them. I also have a bootable external disk with 10.4.7. The same problem occurs when running this system. Interestingly, Limewire will not run under the 10.4.8 system but tuns fine under the 10.4.7 system.
Does anyone have any idea what is wrong or what I can do to play Video DVDs again?

I am just adding to this post.

I can play video DVDs with VLC and can rip them with Handbrake. No other program will recognize the DVDs

  • GX660 DVD drive will not play video DVDs

For some reason the DVD drive in my GX660 refuses to recognise video DVD discs.
DVDs with binary data and audio CDs will be read fine, but inserting a video DVD --any video DVD-- just results in an enormous amount of seeking sounds from the drive before Windows 7 finally gives up on it a reports the drive as empty.
I've had the GX660 for just under a year, during which time the DVD drive has been used very sparingly -- maybe for the installation of no more than a dozen programs.  Never been used for burning DVDs or CDs. Never been used for reading video DVDs which is why I discover it at this late date.
Any ideas concerning this issue, before I turn in the laptop for service?  I'd rather not have to.

In your shoes I'd contact MSI and see if there's a firmware update for the drive to correct the issue. >>How to contact MSI.<<

A reply to similar question (Q & As , in product page Apple Store) says:
"...dissable the internal reader hardware from devices setup. Then plug the external usb superdrive and that's it."  Answered by Enrique T from Lima Oct  25 2013.
If you can locate an external Apple USB 'Air" superdrive for earlier model MacBook Air, that should work. The newer one for the Air is the same as for iMac, now.
You may be able to use other brands of external USB optical drive with your older intel-based iMac, as some of them function capably. A few should also be able to see system discs or other bootable utilities on DVD.
    Hopefully this helps.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • USB super drive for a MacPro retina. It recognizes CDs but not DVDs.

I bought a new USB super drive for a MacPro retina. It recognizes CDs but not DVDs. I am in region 1 and my DVDs are all region 1. This is the second drive so the problem seems to be in the computer. The problem is the same with battery power or AC adaptor. I  downloaded Adobe flash before I bought the USD super drive. Could this be the problem? Any suggestions? Thanks.

    MBP refers to Macbook Pro
Do the DVD spit out right away? (indicates a bad loader mech)
OR do the DVD spit out after several seconds (indicates a dirty laser diode lens) ?

  • HT2801 USB Super drive not working

I have removed the optical drive from my 2008 (late) macbook and added an SSD to run along side the HDD and increased the RAM. I have a super drive to read CD/DVD's  but i can not get this to operate?

I believe that the Apple USB Super Drive only works with late model Macs that didn't come with an optical drive. Third party usb drives will work ok though.

  • Satellite A40-151 DVD drive will not play DVDs

hi my dvd drive will play music cd's but when i try to play a dvd it just makes a beep and nothing happens i tried windvd and it comes on but everything is blurred and still wont play a dvd

    Hello John
Please dont be mad on me but in your posting there is no question or something just small report that DVD drive will not play DVDs.
Anyway, if I am remembering well your unit is about 2 years old and has probably DVD-CDRW (Combo) drive. In my opinion there is no much to do. If the drive has problem with original DVDs I presume that there is laser calibrations problem and the device must be replaced.
I dont know how old is your unit exactly but please check if the warranty is still valid. If yes contact service partner in your country immediately. The drive should be replaced for free. If not you must replaced it on your own. If the drive replacement costs too much I recommend you to use external device (I do it with my old Satellite). On this way I can use newest and very fast super multi DL devices and also create own DVDs.
You can also try to find already used DVD/CD-RW drive and replace it alone. If you need assistance by replacement please write again.
Once again, dont be mad on me. I am ready to write my opinion but it is really annoying when someone write just one sentence and nothing more.
    Good luck!

  • How to use usb super drive at mcbook pro with retina

I had just bought a mcbookpro with retina on-line. I bought a USB super drive as well. I don't know how what button i'll be using to operate the usb super drive. Can anyone help?

If you've a CD with Microsoft Office on it, all you need to do is double-click the installer program on the CD. If you don't see the CD mounted on your Desktop, go to Finder>Preferences>General, and tick the box that says "CDs, DVDs, and iPods" under "Show these items on the desktop".
After you've finished installing Office, simply drag the disc to the Trash and it will eject (I don't have a Retina display model, so I'm not sure if there's an optical disc eject button next to the F12 key or nor - if there is, you can use that as well).
    Hope this helps.
    Clinton
