HT2498 Anyone using a Sony Handycam TD20E?

Is anyone using the above camera with their Mac? I have the latest OS

If you use a SD card in the TD20E, you can import the MTS files (MPEG4 H.264) from it into iMovie 10 for further processing.

  • IMovies 08 use with Sony Handycam DCR-DVD 109

Does anyone know for 100% tried and tested, if you can just plug a Sony Handycam DCR-DVD-109 directly into an iMac using imovies 08 and import home movies directly so they can be edited. Many thanks

I can't seem to figure out how to import video files from the tape.
Since you say tape, I must assume you do not have a Sony DCR-DVD109. As Appleman indicates, "tape" camcorders use the FireWire interface/protocol for tapped video and USB for the Memory Stick "stills."
I looked at iSquint but I guess I'm not sure how it will recognize the tape source any better than the Memory Stick source.
iSquint was recommended specifically for the conversion of VOB ("muxed" MPEG-2) which have already been copied to your hard drive. It is not a dedicated "capture" application.

  • Anyone use the Sony MDRV-700 DJ headphones with nano?

Anyone use these with the nano? Did they work well?
    http://www.warhogsaudioshop.com/ProductImages/Product%20Pictures/Sony%20Pro-Audi o/MDRV700DJ.jpg
I like big headphones, and want to hear from folks that have used them with their nano.
Thanks for your contributions in advance,
    -D.R.

I use Sony MDR-V6 headphones with the nano, and they sound great. These are the same as Sony Pro MDR-7506 (although often the MDR-V6 can be found for less money). These are actually great headphones for sound from nearly any gear (especially at the price), and they provide good isolation.
I don't know how the V-700 headphones work, but I'd stay away from them under the fear that they would be similar to the V-600s which are awful.
You will look ridiculous walking around in MDR-V6 cans unless you are in a recording studio. I hide in my office or at home with them and walk around with either buds (which unfortunately don't work with my ear shape very well - no bass) or Koss Sporta Pro (muddy and too much bass, but somehow musical and adequate for the task if exercising or walking about with ambient noise, plus you can set them around your neck when you aren't using them so they don't take pocket/bag space.)

  • Using a Sony Handycam with a MacBook

We have a Sony Handycam and I am unable to make it work with my MacBook. Are they compatible and how can I import the movies off the camcorder and work with them on my mac?

im pretty sure you have to get a firewire cable to connect the sony to your macbook. unless of course you have a memory card reader. then you could just dump the memory card from inside the sony cam into the card reader and import.

  • How can I use my Sony Handycam DCRSR65?

    Hi,
I just bought this Handycam model DCRSR65. I can't seem to figure out what to do! I have downloaded sttreamclip still no audio and I can't even find my camera in Imovie? Please tell me there is a way! I think my macbook has a firewire port, so will this work? IF so, where do these firewire come from? I'm not very computer savvy so any help is really appreciated. I'm starting to feel like this purchase of a Sony product was ridiculously stupid! So many others seem to have this problem, please tell me it can be rectified for under a million dollars!
    Thanks for your help!

You probably can not use it, unless you have a working InfraRed that can learn signals.
Learning IR signals manually is a feature reserved for the illusive 'proper' Sony Xperia ZL, which I have yet to believe in. See the InfraRed Problem thread at Sony Xperia Care for details; chances are your ZL device's IR isn't working either. If it does, bless you!

  • Anyone use the Sony GV-HD700 deck for their HD mini-Dv tapes?

Hi, I've been filming on a Canon XH-A1 in HD and I can't get my tapes to play in the deck. It recognizes the timecode, it will fastforward and rewind just fine, I've got the setting set to HD, the iLink Conversion is off, and I've been through every menu option I can find, but when I hit play I get an error message that says "Change to correct tape format."
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
Incidentally, I can capture the footage into FCP through my camera, but obviously the whole point of getting the deck is to not wear out my camera's playheads...
    thanks much!
    -Sarah

    Hmmm....
So before when I was shooting in SD, I thought I was shooting in 30F then too, and the deck plays back that just fine - am I missing a difference in SD vs HD types of 30F?
I shoot documentary-style projects for artists, organic farmers, sustainable energy efforts... do you think there would be a noticeable negative change if I just switched to shooting 60i so I could use the deck for capture and playback when I'm in the field? I'm also intermixing footage I shoot with the Canon 5D mark II SLR, any input on that combo?
Thanks so much, sorry if I'm asking dumb questions, I'm trying to figure all of this out but it's a bit overwhelming...

  • Anyone use a Sony KDF-50WE655...

...for the Mac Pro? This tv has an HDMI input, and component inputs, and I want to know (before I buy) if anyone is using this tv to display their MacPro. I know at a minimum I'll need a DVI-HDMI cable, or a DVI-HDMI converter on a HDMI-HDMI cable, but I'm wondering if the MP will recognize it as a monitor.
Maybe a better solution would be throwing an HDMI graphics card into the MP?
Lemme know and thanks in advance,

Generally you're going to have this problem with ANY computer that you hook up to a TV. If the TV does overscanning it is going to modify the edges of any input that you send to it. You don't notice due to the fact that there's usually nothing REALLY important around the edges of a TV broadcast, but with computers you definately notice when the menu bar gets chopped off.
HDMI is just another type of interface meant to send a DVI signal. Somtimes a digital audio signal is also sent with HDMI along with the video. You can buy a DVI to HDMI converter, which are pretty cheap, and hook up nearly any HDMI compatible TV using your computer's DVI output. This is not a problem specific to Mac Pro's, it's a problem with the TV, which means that no computer you buy will be any different if your TV has this problem. What I would recommend is picking up this inexpensive adaptor and using a computer (your current computer, a friend's?) that has a DVI output to give it a try with your TV. See if the TV modifies the source.
Regarding your inital post, the Mac Pro cannot output component video AFAIK. There is some speculation on this due to the fact the the PC version of the ATI X1900 XT card can use an adaptor to do so and the Mac version for G5's says it can use the same adaptor, but not for the Intel. That being the case probably means that the card is capable of doing component outputs, but there needs to be native drivers for the ATI card which do not exist right now. There is a posibility that it would work in the future or even without the drivers, but I've never tried it and it's not officially supported.
My personal setup has a projector (Optoma model) hooked up via a DVI cable from my Mac Pro and audio running through the optical output on the back to my 7.1 surround receiver. A little overkill, but as soon as a high-def format is decided upon and cheap enough to put the drive in my Pro I don't also have to buy a separate high-def player. Everything works great with no overscanning at all, which is expected because overscanning is usually employeed much more on TV's and not an issue with projectors.

  • Anyone used a Sony Win 7 PC with a Tethered iPhone 3GS?

How did it work out? Ease or otherwise of Sony PC set up and internet use??
    Cheers, all
    Ken

The Verizon CD is usually needed to set up your DSL accounts for the first time.  I recently purchased a laptop computer with Win7 and the Win 7 automatically set up my connection.  Thee was no need to use any installation disk.  This should be the process whether using adirect ethernet cable to the modem or a wireless router.  Give it a try.

I will be using this with a new Mac tower. 8 gig of ram.
Thanks for any info or help

    Hi,
Used that deck yesterday to load about 70 mins into an FCP system off a BetaSP. Used a Kona LH card, chose the appropriate kona dvpal setting, worked smoothly. Are you gonna capture through the firewire output?
For what its worth, we were told NOT to use the J3 for conforms. It has an annoyingly slow transport mechanism and seems to be more susceptible to dropout. It is a deck designed to sit in producers offices really. It even comes with a remote!

  • Sony Handycam Digital8 - Capuring Set up

    Hello,
I've captured some clips before using my Sony Handycam Digital8 camera ... however, now the audio isn't matching up.
I know this is a set up issue .... however, I have no idea where to setup my camera in the settings.
Is it Easy Setup? and if so, which selection is it?
    Many thanks!!

If your Sony will shoot in 48KHz (16 Bit), you should change it from 32KHz as you will be getting slightly better sound. (Make sure the Easy Setup matches of course).
One of the reasons for having the lower setting on a camcorder was to allow audio dubbing, but now that we use computer editing, that capability is unnecessary .

  • Sony Handycam downloading through iLink cable has quit working :(

I have made several dvds using my sony handycam, I download to imovie using a ilink dv/firewire cable (I think that's what it's called) and then convert to idvd. It's always worked great... and now the movie skips while making the clips in imovie. I don't think it's my camera because the camera plays fine to a VCR. I was thinking I may need a new cord, or does someone have any suggestions for me? I've tried restarting and unplugging several times. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello Gina,
... and now the movie skips while making the clips in imovie
How much free space do you have on your startup disk? Minimum required is 15 - 20 GB.
I don't think the cable is the culprit here, as that usually results in a complete loss of the connection.
    Try these:
    • delete the iMovie Prefence File (com.apple.iMovie.plist) and empty the trash.
    • repair permissions using Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) and reboot your Mac
    • free up some disk space
    • disconnect any other Firewire devices (e.g. ext. hard disk)

  • Sony Handycam - file conversion to DV but images still not clear ?

I am a new user to iMac have had read some great ideas through this discussion page. The first issue I have encountered is using my Sony Handycam (DCR-SR62) with the MAC ! Following advice, I have downloaded Streamclip + Quicktime MPEG-2 and have managed to convert image to 'DV' file and then import this to iMovie. My problem now is that the video footage is still not all that clear - any other suggestions would be great !

    thanks for the help.
+2. You mean you have an old cable (that used to work) AND a new cable? And neither seems to work?+
I actually had 2 firewire cables, one old one, one not so old, neither will work with the camera, so I bought a brand new one, which also doesn't work.
I know the firewire port in my mac is fine - I use it constantly, and I've also tried the camera on 2 other Mac's so I know it's not that.
I tried plugging the camera into my Macs with the USB connection but Image Capture can't detect it. But I also tried plugging it into a Windows PC laptop today - it recognised that something was connected (although didn't have the software to operate it) so I presume it can still connect via the USB.
I guess that the firewire out port on the camera itself is the most likely problem (I can't have 3 broken firewire cables!!). One of the pins in the port on the camera may have been damaged somehow when plugging or unplugging the cable. Hopefully I'll be able to download the video on a PC using a USB connection, but I don't know yet! And I don't know how easy it would be to fix the port on the camera... presuming that is the problem... and it's not just been 'disabled' by a setting somewhere somehow...

  • How do I get the Movies off my new Sony Handycam using iMovie?

WOW! I didn’t think that this would be such an issue!
    So, I purchase a new Sony Handycam DCR-SR42 with a 30 GB
Hard Drive in it. I ask the sales person “Is this camera compatible
with my G5 Mac?” He says, it sure is! I take it home record the kids
around the house, and my daughter’s ballet recidal. COOL!
Then I go and try and downlaod the movies to my Mac. I come to
find out that the 2 cds that came with the camera are pretty worthless!
Sony states in one of the bullet points in the instruction manuel
that the software on the cd will not work on a Macintosh computer.
So, I figured, NO big deal, I will be using iMovie! Unfortunately
iMovie does not recognize the camera when I hook it up, because
it can only hook up using a USB connection. It doesn’t even offer
a Firewire connection, and iMovie ONLY recognizes Firewire.
I then find on one of the cds, a PDF of the Handycam Handbook.
It states in the PDF, that Mac users need to open the disk icon
on the desk top for the camera, and copy the files from the camera
to my hard drive. So I follow the steps and do this. Then I go to
open one of the files using Qucktime, and I get an error message
stating that Quicktime cannot open the file because it could not
    parse it -2048!?!?!
Next, I go to the Apple web site to see if I can find anything to
resolve all this. I find an article “iMovie does not work with muxed
MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 clips” In the article it states that if the files
are MPEG2 Muxed files, iMovie can not support them!
I come to find out that the files are MPEG2 Muxed files. It seems
that the newer camcorders are using this format, because the files
are heavily compressed to allow the camera to cram more data
on the hard disk. The problem is you need some kind of software
to decompress these files in order to use them, and Sony doesn’t
    include it for the Mac!
After more research I find - QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback on the
Apple web site. I purchase it for $19.99 from the site hoping this
will be the answer. Nope! It allowed me to open the movies in
QuickTime, and copy them into iMovie but they are only the
video portion. They have NO audio!
Anyone else run into this whole pile of BS?!?!!? If so, were you
able to figure out a work around? Or, are you stuck with a cool
camera full of movies, with NO way of getting them off with
sound? Well. unless you find someone with a PC that has
a DVD burner in it! Man, that thought scares the ---- out of me!

    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Get a nice Sony miniDV camcorder. It is not too expensive; it is small and easy to carry around to shoot your video. Most importantly, it will be instantly compatible with iMovie. You don't have to install any software, just connect it via FireWire (Sony calls this iLink) and you are good to go!
I have had several Sonys and love them. You don't need one with fancy editing capabilities because you will edit your movies in iMovie. Just be sure that it has AV In and Out so you can import and export back to the camcorder.
My current version is the small DCR HC-26. There are newer versions of that HC-30something and 40something. Look at the specs on Sony's website
Some of them require the use of a dock to import and export. I am not really fond of that feature. I like just connecting directly to the camera.

Hard Drive:  The Hard Drive is on my camera (Sony Handycam)
Just needed some info on what is going on with your particular system.
Knowing the exact camera model will also assist us.
If this camera is standard AVCHD you should be able to connect with USB to Mac with FCE open and use Log and Transfer without all the fiddling around converting etc.
What FCE does during ingest is convert files to AIC. (Apple Intermediate Codec)
FCE cannot read the individual files in the BDMV folder, that's why all the converting is required when you use that method.
BTW: regards formatting drives/cards/memory on cameras; it is wise to use the actual device to format rather than a computer. This is a prime cause of read/write goof ups with solid state media. This applies to still or video cameras.
Keeping the COMPLETE card/memory structure in tact is vital for successful transfers.

  • Using footage from DVD disc shot with sony handycam

I'm trying to import some footage that was shot with a sony handycam. The camera records directly onto a mini DVD disc. I put the disc in and copied the files onto my desktop. When I import the files into FCP, it recognizes the .vob files, but not the other ones.....so, all I have in FCP is the video, but no audio. Any ideas on how to get the audio into FCP? Trying to avoid playing the mini DVD disc on a player and recording the audio, then importing that and then trying to sync....but will resort to that if necessary.
    Thanks in advance.

Get MPEG Streamclip (its free) from www.versiontracker.com. Use this to convert the files from your handycam to QuickTime videos using the DV codec.
Be aware that there will be a loss in quality as you convert your MPEG-2 videos to an editable format. Its unavoidable, and the reason professionals do not use direct to DVD cameras.
