I am having issues with mail and also cannot close which might reset

Click on Apple picture (Top l/h corner) > Force quit. This will list your currently operating apps. Mail should be highlighted; if not, highlight it then press Force Quit. Then relaunch Mail.

Quit Mail, Trash this file...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

Mail will not stop loading, twirling rainbow icon will not stop, cannot close mail application then.

Just downloaded OS X Mountain Lion and on my Mac Book Pro (mid 2009). When I select the mail application this problem occurs: the rainbow icon that twirls will not stop, and then I cannot close the mail program at all. Click on the apple in the top left corner of the computer. If it doesn't let you, open another application such as finder, and then click it, then go down the force quit, then click mail and then press force quit.

My MacBook cannot close the Mail application and didn't want to be closed....Can somebody help me or give me a tip ?

Use the  ➙ Force Quit menu option in the menu bar. Select Mail and force quit it.

More details on your upgrade would help. For example, did you upgrade to Mavericks from Snow Leopard or did you simply upgrade from 10.9.0 to 10.9.1.

FYI - clicking the red dot will not Quit an application that can have more than one window open. Mail is such an app. So are Safari, Pages, Numbers, Keynote. The convention for quitting Macintosh Applications is either command-Q on the keyboard or, if you're a mouser - File->Quit. On the other hand System Preferences, Calculator, DiskUtility and Face time are examples of single window Apps where "closing the window" Quitis the program.
The confusion is more common among WinDUHows to Macintosh converts.

Cannot recieve mail or close mail

I bounced a junk email and it has come back to haunt me. Since i received the nondeliverable email I cannot close my mail without force quiting. I also have not been recieving new emails. When I restart mail it seem to be in a loop mode and the undeliverable mail notice keeps repeating itself. any suggestions? Thanks

Try going to a web based email client, such as web2mail.com and dealing with the offending email there.
From a web based client you can review and discard/keep and clean out you mail without having to load it on your machine.

Mail windows cannot close

Hi,
Since a recent upgrade (Mail is now at Version 4.2 (1078)), I often get situations where I cannot close openned email windows. I tried the following without success:
* use the red "close" botton
* use the menu File-> close
* quit Mail (the openned window comes back when I launch)
* force quit (same)
The only way I tought of for killing these annoying email windows is to send it to myself... not very productive.
I got that on both my desktop and laptop after a recent upgrade.
Any one else got that?

I'm not quite sure I understand correctly -
when I start Mail, I have the main Mail "window" open; it shows the mailboxes in the left column, the list of email messages within the mailbox selected are in the top part of the window and, if I click on one, the message opens in the lower part of the window. That window will always be open while you have Mail open. I don't have a separate "email window" open unless I am typing a new message and that disappears as soon as I've sent the message. So I'm not sure why you would have several email windows open? Can you elaborate on exactly what they are or what might have caused it?
I never use the close (either button or File menu) because it seems somewhat pointless - I am either actively using Mail or I quit Mail when I'm done. Using Mac OS, you must use quit; using "close" will keep the application running (albeit in the background) until the Mac is shut down.
And, whatever window(s) were open when you quit (or closed) the application, the very same window(s) will open when you next start the application. That is a feature for your convenience, so you can get right back to where you left off. Try quitting (file - quit or command-q) Mail with only the main window open - you should get only that window when you next open it.

If you cannot get mail to quit/force quit, you can always remove power from your Mac.
NOTE: removing power is a bad idea, and can result in data loss, but sometimes it is the only thing left to do.
Press and hold the power button for 5 to 10 seconds, and the Mac will power off.
When you power back on, the Mac should reboot.

I have an issue with my ipad2. There is a dialogue box open regarding connecting to hotmail and I cannot close it. Any ideas on what I can do?

You need to force quit whatever is happening to you. Try a reset, reboot. Hold the home and sleep button until the apple logo appears. Ignore the red slider.
What may be happening is that the set up for your hot mail account is wrong or has failed, and if you have push or fetch turned on, one of the first things the pad will do is to establish contact, and check your mail. If it cannot get through because of the set up, it comes to a stop, wanting you to fix that problem.
If you have a wifi only, try to start up the pad where there is no signal. And if your have 3 g, turn it off. You want the pad to thing there is no signal, so dont try to look for the mail.
What happens if you push home from that screen? It should goto the home page. Then go immediately to settings, mail, and either fix the setting, or delete the account and start over. But turn off push or fetch until you get it sorted out.

An iOS fluke or mail app glitch maybe. Not sure anyone will know why you get it. Do you're ever close the mail app? Try closing it and reset the iPad and see if the message goes away.
Assuming that you are running iOS 7, in order to close apps, you drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the Mail app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

When you double tap the home button, you should see a screen that looks like this. You see all of the apps that you have recently used going across the screen. You can swipe from screen to screen to get to each and every app. In order to close an app, you drag the app preview window up "off" of the top of the screen. Don't swipe up on the app icon, swipe up on the thumbnail preview window. You will see the window fly iPad off of the screen. That's how you close an app.
Find the Mail app by swiping from screen to screen - if it's not already visible - and swipe up to close it. This has nothing to do with the control center at all, so don't swipe up to get to it.

Close the Mail app in the Task Bar and re-launch.
Double-click the Home button to reveal Task Bar. Hold Mail app down for a second or two until it wiggle; tap minus sign to close app.
If it still doesn't work, try a reset.
Hold the Sleep and Home button down until you see the Apple logo.
