HT2500 smart mailbox question

s there any way to have an email deleted from my inbox when I put it in automatically into a smart mailbox so that it is not in the mailbox and the inbox

Not sure I understand the question, but...  I think you are saying that you want to have a message appear in a smart mailbox (based on conditions you define), but not in the mailbox where it is actually located (once it appears in the smart mailbox).
If that's correct, the better feature to use would be Rules.  Rules can be used to move a message from one mailbox (such as your Inbox) to another mailbox automatically.  They are set up in Mail preferences Rules tab.
Click Add Rule.  Set up the rule so that it defines the conditions to be met for the specified action to be performed automatically.  As a simple example, you can have emails received from a particularly important email address go to an "Most Urgent" mailbox automatically.  You can edit rules after they are initially created.
I think this does what you aksed, because the message is moved from the Inbox to another mailbox, so it disappears in one place and appears in another place.

Is there a way to make emails that go into a smart mailbox not show up in my main inbox

If your rule says Perform Action: Move message to mailbox, it should only go to the folder:
Mail must be running of course for this to happen.  If it isn't, next time you launch it, contol-click the inbox and choose Apply Rules (or Option-Command-L).

  • Smart mailbox questions

    Hi,
I have created a couple of smart mailboxes. I am new to Leopard, but not to macs at all.
Is there a way to have the message move to the smart mailbox and not be in my inbox? Or maybe I am missing the point of the smart mailbox and I should set up a basic folder and use Rules to control this?
I love the smart mailbox feature, but what I am trying to do is have those emails not clutter up my inbox by having them move to their own smart mailbox.
    thanks for the help!

    Welcome to the discussions, crojack.
Mail messages are stored in ordinary mailboxes. Smart mailboxes give an alternate view of the messages, but do not actually store them. You could for example have a mailbox for messages from your boss, and another for messages from research colleagues - and have a smart mailbox that lists any messages in either of those mailboxes with the subject "special project".

  • Question re: setting up smart mailboxes

I have a mailbox that is set to gather email with the following criteria - Any recipient contains [email protected], plus several other criteria. This is set up to gather important stuff so I don't miss it. Today I discovered a MAJOR problem with this. If a sender does not disclose the list of recipients, for example they are using BCC for a list,  the email will not go to this smart mailbox. I nearly missed an email announcing the death of a very dear friend because of it!
So my question is this - is there any way to create a smart mailbox rule other than what's provided in the drop down selection boxes? I want to add a rule "received by [email protected]" so that I don't miss another crucial email.
    thanks

Yes you should be seeing the logo, but everyone's getting the red X instead - it's a bug introduced by the 10.1.2 update (as is the appearance of the "i" icon at the top right, where we should have the templates menu icon) but it doesn't affect the function of the dialog. What appears on the left-side panel and in the Advanced tree depends on what's in the file - some have more XMP structure than others.

  • Number of messages in Smart Mailbox

A question & some relavent thoughts:
In Mail, the number of Unread messages is shown the right of each mailbox.  But what are the total number messages?   Alternatively, how many Read messages are there?
I have many folders.  I am trying to create separate mailboxes for each important (to me) Sender.  Then it would be possible to find out how many messages were in 1 Smart Mailbox not contained in any other Smart Mail Box by
    1. having a Smart Mailbox containing all mail, and
    2. specifying conditions: From ...  Does not contain ...   Sender
    3. for each Sender
This would be very tedious if one receives mail from many senders.  However, if
    1. all senders belong to at least 1 Group,
this might be onerous but at least feasible.
If however, there were a Smart Mailbox condition:
    2. Group ...  Does not contain ...   Sender,
then this would feasible witnout being too onerous.
If anyone has any answers and/or suggestions,  I would be very happy to receive same!

I have had the same problem as well and could not find any way of fixing it! Also when I changed the name of the folder the message count disappeared for a while and then seemed to come back later... very bizarre.
Anyway, I may have found a solution after spending all afternoon searching the internet on macosxhints. [Link goes to the specific hint].
I would advise making a complete back-up of your ~/Library/Mail folder before trying this, though. When I did this it seemed to re-import some messages and mark them as unread for some unknown reason. However, I went through and marked them all as 'read', and I have the same number of messages in each mailbox as I did before I tried this, so I can only assume that things are the same as before.
One thing has changed, however! I no longer have a false number on the 'Flagged' messages smart mailbox! (Although if you have lots of messages marked as 'flagged' it may clear the flag - not sure).

  • Archiving Smart Mailbox Messages

Is there a way to archive only the messages in a Smart Mailbox (alternatively, archive only selected messages).
    Thank you

Why do I need to post a comment or a follow-up before I can mark a question as answered? That's silly.

  • VIP folder vs. Smart Mailbox Folder - Why won't they behave similarly?

My poorly formatted question is this. Why in the VIPs folder you can view ALL the emails in one view from the people you add to this list when you click on the root VIPS text...HOWEVER...when you create a Smart Mailbox Folder like "Employees" and then add people to that list, you can't see all the emails from everybody in one view when you click on the root Employees text. You have to individually select employees from the pull down list to see their emails.
I thought this used to work fine with Lion. Maybe I'm missing something here?
Also, another weird and annoying little bug is that when you add Employees to your favorites bar and then select one of the employees from the list, the text in your favorites bar changes from "Employees" to "Employees - John Doe (24)" and doesn't let you revert it back to the simple Employees root text unless you drag it off the favorties bar and then re-add it. Very annoying.
Anyone else having the same problem?
    Thanks!

I am using gmail. So not really sure. I deleted almost everything in both the Macand Gmail mailboxes. And today they are back again...

  • Compound criteria for smart mailboxes?

I would like to create a smart mailbox with compound rules such as:
(To contains "x"  AND Subject contains "y") OR (From contains "z")
Is this possible?  If so, how is it done?  Is there a manual or web page that explains how to do this?
Sorry for the elementary question, but I'm new to Mac Mail.
P.S.  Another way I could handle the same need (for me) would be to have mail rules that apply to outgoing e-mails, not just received e-mails.  My understanding from other posts I've seen is that this did not exist in the past.  Has that been changed?

  • Smart Mailboxes empty / dumb

I'm syncing Mail over four computers using my mobileme.com. All running same version of OS 10.6.8. Periodically after I MERGE my "Mail Rules, Signatures and Smart Mailboxes" they still appear, but no longer function. When I go to edit the smart mailbox, the criteria have all disappeared and I get four blank windows. I have had to recreate smart mailboxes twice and reset sync data from one computer to mobileme to reverse sync to the other computers. The mail server is Exchange 2007. Could that have something to do with it?

I guess if you wait long enough, you can answer your own questions. I realized that at least one of my computers had an older version of Mail.app (4.4) and none of the computers were running the program in 32-bit mode. I didn't even know that was an option. However, I have since updated all versions of Mail (on 3 computers) to 4.5 and am running them all in 32-bit mode. This has fixed the mysterious empty smart mailboxes problem. In short, my smart mailboxes are, once again, my friend!

  • Linking addresses in a Smart Mailbox to a Smart Group

I hav set up a Smart Mailbox for replies to a question that I posted on LinkedIn. I have received eight or so replies and I want to reply to all the people who answered my question in one email. Is there a quick way to transfer all the addresses into a smart group so that I can send one email to all in that smart group?

Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has an Add Addresses script that may or may not do what you’re looking for.

  • My smart mailboxes are not synchronising between my iMac and my Macbook air

Hi, I have an iMac running OS X 10.9.5 and a Macbook Air running OS X 10.9.5. I predominately use my iMac, but when I travel or out of the office I take my Macbook Air. I can see my smart mailboxes on both machines, but the content is missing on the majority of my smart mailboxes on my Macbook Air.
Oddly enough, I recently created a new smart mailbox (in the last three weeks) and the content of this mailbox is synchronised in both machines. I not sure how to fix this so as I have all smart folders synchronised on both machines.
    Thanks in advance.
    Dolores

Thanks, I knew that though and nothing was happening.
However, since I asked the question my documents have started to sync. No idea why, nothing has changed in my settings apart from a restart of all devices...but it's working so issue solved!

  • Smart mailbox with multiple addresses

It seams that creating a Smart Mailbox with "From" multiple addresses (comma separated) conditions works with INBOX emails... but the same idea does not work if it applies to SENT emails... any help?

    Hi Sanjay,
Outlook would resolve the SMTP to Displayname if object is found in the GAL, hence no option for you to get that directly visible to the user, if he is accessing the email there.
Quick way to find out would be checking the header info on the email
To:  Field should essentially contain the email ID to which email was directed to.
As an admin you can check this on the message tracking logs for the user.
    Sample Message Header below:

  • Can not change default smart mailboxes

    Hi,
Ever since I upgraded to 10.9 my Mail.app does not allow me to make changes to the smart folders.
There is a default one called "today" and it can be deleted, renamed or edited but in a few minutes it reappears in its default state. Same for any new smart mailbox, I can create it but in a few minutes it is again not there.
    How can I fix this?
    Thanks
    Asu

    Hi Don,
Thank you so much for your help and information. I have been trying to figure out how to change the default browser for about two weeks now. All the help files I've seen talked about an internet control panel I did not seem to have.
I followed your advice and that fixed it. I now get the right control panel when I pick the internet control panel from the apple menu. And yes, I can now choose my default browser.
After the fix when I first checked HELP to see if it could now open the internet control panel, it gave me an error message and told me to restart the computer. However, after rebooting and rebuilding the desktop it opens the control panel for me.
It also fixed at least one other problem I had with another program. Ever since I upgraded my IM program, it's INTERNET SETTINGS link under the edit menu never worked. It would not do anything when I chose it. It now works and opens the internet control panel. That is nice.
    One other question.
After using Tome Viewer, I seen a number of internet related files. Some I already have like; Internet Prefs, Internet set and Internet Config Extension. However there is one called "Internet.cnl". I don't seem to have that file anywhere installed on my computer. Should this file be installed somewhere too?
Thanks again for your help. It was very much appreciated.

  • Moving messages from a Smart Mailbox into an On My Mac folder for archiving

I'm trying to find a way to (as automatically as possible) archive emails. I'm using IMAP and I want to try to get the messages off the server and onto my laptop because it takes too much time and CPU cycles for Mail to tell the IMAP server to do all the grunt work, especially when I have upwards of 100,000 emails on the IMAP server. I've considered switching to POP3, but I've decided that IMAP is still the best solution, taking other issues into consideration as well.
I've looked at Mail Scripts, but it doesn't have the functionalty I want (namely it doesn't work with Smart Mailboxes, nor can do you have the same level flexibility of specifying dates and such as a Smart Mailbox does.
What I've come up with is I've created a Smart Mailbox which lists all messages older than 3 months (these are the messages I want to archive). I've also created an On My Mac folder where I would like to store all the archived email. My problems are:
    1) How can I move the emails from the Smart Mailbox into the On My Mac folder?
    2) The move of the messages should be done by Mail itself, otherwise, unless there is a way to automate the process, I will have to tell Mail to manually rebuild the On My Mac folder or else the messages that have been copied to the On My Mac folder will not be viewable in Mail, nor with they be caught by other Smart Mailboxes.
Anyone have any brilliant suggestions, or perhaps another way to do this all together?
    Thanks in advance...

Why do I need to post a comment or a follow-up before I can mark a question as answered? That's silly.

  • Smart mailbox sometimes showing messages that don't belong there

Occasionally my Smart mailbox will contain a couple of mails that don't match the rules, along with everything else that should be there. If I select another mailbox and then reselect the Smart mailbox in question it then shows the correct mails.
Usually this seems to happen when my laptop is awoken from sleep or mail is first loaded, but it has happened from just selecting the mailbox. The misplaced e-mails almost always seem to be unread mails from another mailbox which throws my unread count on this smart mailbox.
I have tried rebuilding my mail index and this hasn't helped.
    Any ideas/solutions gratefully appreciated?
    James.

Also, if you are sharing an Apple ID, you will get his iMessages.
