Here's wiki's definition of that term.
And I found that by googling "alias address". There are lots of other references to that term if you do that search.
While I believe you could use that with OSX's Postfix MTA I would think it would be up to the email server's you use to support that functionality.

Quit Mail, Trash this file...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist

Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

In Mail's preferences click on the General icon in the toolbar. Here you can set Mail to automatically check for mail Manually.
Then to check for mail you would have to click on the Get Mail icon in the mail browser window:

Sounds like you did the Security Update and got the this version is not compatible message.

The update, which failed for you in Mail because you had moved Mail out of the Applications folder, where it needed to be to be found, or it was sitting inside another folder there, changed the version to 4.6 and you are getting that message because it's seeing the "old" version.

Can someone tell me what the latest version of Mail is please?
I am experiencing problems on my husband's I-Mac (operating OS X 10.5.8) Mail Version is 3.6 (936), however I am not expriencing mail problems on my Mac Book Pro.
I have run software update and not sure what to do really. Has anyone any ideas?

I can't take my alias mail accounts online.

My iCloud account shows the alias accounts alright, but my Mail application shows the alii dimmed. Clicking in the drop down menu to take the accounts online gives no result. I want to use the accounts as I have in the past, but there is some problem! Don't know why.

Hi pvonk. I am a longtime Mac client, so I do have the @mac.com and @me.com, along with the new icloud.dom. I have the possibility to create a third and final alias, but I haven't so far.
The dimmed appearance appeared in Inbox as one of the mail accounts. What is bothering me, though is the symbol similar to this one: ~ that appears in a circle next to the [email protected] or @icloud.com. When I click on that, it becomes highlighted and I get a popup window that gives me the following choices:
New Mailbox...
Export mailbox...
Erase deleted items...
Erase junk mail...
Synchronise [email protected]
Take [email protected] online
Edit [email protected]
Get account info
Every time I click to take the alias online, nothing happens. Maybe I don't need to?

What is causing Mail to send me e-mail out of my own inbox/sent folder

I don't really know how to easily describe this, but here goes. This started yesterday. I get a message in my inbox from a previous e-mail correspondent. When I open the message it is actually an old message from in my inbox or sent folder that is not to (or from) the person that supposedly sent me the current mail. It could be to me from a completely different source or it could be from me to a completely different recipient. What could be causing this?
I have an iMac 22.5 inch running OSX 10.7.3
I loaded ClamXav and ran it. It found two threats and isolated them. I saw those threats in other posts and I think they are benign. The files are two .emlx files. they are identified as phishing threats.
I previously was infected with the Flashback Trojan but found it and performed the Apple OS update. I have since changed all my passwords, but I am still getting these funky e-mails. This afternoon I received a reply from a correspondent. When I opened the reply, it was an actual reply, but in the thread it had an e-mail I had received a year ago from a banking site with registration information embedded in the thread! The correspondent didn't mention this, so I don't think she saw it. When I replied back the embedded bank e-mail was gone from the thread. I've searched through support and I don't see anything like this.

I don't know how to find the offending files now anyway. The window that came up and told me the two infected files in ClamXav is gone, and when I try to go to the logs it shows every file searched. And how do I go to my inbox and find 686.emlx in order to open it and put it in the trash. Maybe I can open it from finder.
It's possible that those two messages were already in your Junk or Trash mailboxes and have been deleted already, so that's why they aren't being detected any more.
To find those entries in your scan log, type Command-F to bring up the find dialog, enter "FOUND" without the quotes in capitol letters in the "Find:" box and un-check the "Ignore Case" box. Only that most recent part of the log is visible in the window, so if you don't find them at first use the "▲ Earlier |" button in the lower right hand corner of the log window to see more. That should tell you the path to where that message was at the time. Probably something like:
~/Library/Mail/<mailaccountname>/INBOX.imapmbox/Messages/
where "~" is your home folder at /Users/<yourusername>/
If and when you find the file, just double-click it to open it in Mail and decide what you need to do with it.
Anyway, I don't think this has ANYTHING to do with the problem I was having
