HT2518 Migration Wizard: PC - hard drive - Mac

Hello all,
I've got an iPhone, recently got an iPad and now about to replace my Windows 7 laptop with a MacBook Air
I went to use the migration wizard but it was so slow and I can't wait to play with my new toy! As the Air only has Wi-Fi, is there a way to automatically migrate from my PC to an external HDD then onto my Mac?
Only thing I really care about is keeping my iTunes library organized with album covers, lyrics and play counts (as anal as it sounds I like the view my stats on play counts)
Thanks.
Kieron.

hi is it possible to migrate my old hard drive to my new SDD drive with them both install in my desktop at the same time? also where can I download the software? I cant find any on SanDisk website Thanks

yes you can migrate with both the SSD and HDD connected internally to your desktop. SanDisk offers a one time use cloning software for free in the SSD Dashboard. Use the link below to install the SSD Dahboard and on the Tool tab there will be an option for Apricorn cloning software.

  • Can I use Migration Assistant to migrate from a hard drive on the same computer?

I have a Mac Pro with spaces for four hard drives.
I currently have only one hard drive, with Mac OS X 10.6 on it.
I am getting a new, second hard drive (a Solid State Drive). I want it to be my primary drive, to install Mac OS X 10.6 on that and use that as the startup disk.
I want to leave my original hard drive in the computer as a secondary drive.
I understand that the Migration Assistant can only import settings from another, separate, Mac? Is that true?
Or is it possible to tell Migration Assistant to get the settings from this older hard drive, even though it is on the very same computer?
Thank you in advance for insights, suggestions, advice and ideas!

MA will transfer your current system preferences to the SSD regardless of where they come from.
BTW, you will need a special mounting sled for the SSD. You should find them at OWC.

  • How to migrate from internal hard drive to SSD (Solid State Drive)?

I just bought 128GB SSD. I want to replace my internal hard drive with SSD on MacBook Pro. My internal drive has only Mac OS installed (no dual boot with Windows/Linux). Going forward I want to boot my Mac OS from SSD and use internal drive for backup purposes only. I read many forums regarding this here, but each one talks about different methods of doing it.
    * Carbon Copy Cloner for the Mac side (free)
    * Casper 6.0 for the Windows side (not free)
    * SuperDuper
Can some one provide me with simple steps to migrate Mac OS along with my personal data from internal hard drive to SSD?

Because Windows is not involved, you don't need Casper or anything else Windows-related.
Use Disk Utility to repair permissions and repair the directory on your internal hard drive. Buy an external SATA hard drive enclosure* and mount your SSD in it. Connect it to the MBP and use Disk Utility to create a single GUID partition on it, formatting the partition Mac OS Extended. Use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner, it doesn't matter which, to make a bootable clone of the internal hard drive on the SSD in the external enclosure. Restart the computer holding down the Option key, and select the SSD to start up from; the purpose here is to verify that the SSD really is bootable. If that works OK, shut down, disconnect the external enclosure, and exchange the drives.
*I recommend a FireWire 800 enclosure, but they are much more expensive than USB-only enclosures, which will work OK — USB is just slow.

  • How do I use migration assistance with hard drive reader for dead macbook

    Hi,
My old mac laptop died without warning.
I took it to the apple store and they suggested getting a hard drive reader and using that to transfer
    across my files.
I've connected it up and have requested the migration assistant to transfer the files. Last night it
said it would 27 hours to transfer and now this morning it is saying 72 hours. This seems to
be a very long time - is it correct? Can I make it go faster or is there another way?
I've got a bit of music on there but nothing excessive. I do have about 15,000 photos though.
I'm not very techy so any assistance would be very helpful
    Thanks
    Sarah

Hi, that's far to long, unless maybe it's USB1.1 speed.
If USB2 or Firewire, I'd start ober & try Disk utility>Repair Disk on the external drive.

  • Migration Assistant - External Hard Drive

Hi - I am trying to use Migration Assistant on a MacBook Pro to transfer my files from a La Cie external hard drive - which has all my files backed up from a 2005 mac book (photos, music etc) The migration assistant does not recognise the LaCie Hard Drive although it is connected to the MacBook via a cable and I can see the Hard Drive & associated files on the desk top.

Here's a link to Kappy's Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel Macs:

I'm not sure that Migration Assistant would be the best choice for what you want to do.
    Good luck!

  • Migration Assistant Issue - Hard Drive Memory Related

I've been trying several days to migrate my system from a 2009 iMac to a new MacMini with no success.  I've tried Migration Assistant over WiFi, Ethernet to my AirPort images and directly in Target Disk mode (Firewire 800).  Both machines are current and running 10.10.1.
When I first launched Migration Assistant on both machines the old iMac never sees the MacMini although the MacMini sees the iMac and generates the six-digit code.
I next tried connecting to the Time Machine backup of the iMac and encountered the persistent fault that I can't seem to solve.  I can find the server and files but once I get to the screen where it asks what files to Migrate it always calculates not enough space to move the files.  The MacMini has 846 GB available and I'd like to move 338 GB over from the iMac.  I have no clue what is causing this.
When I deselect items such as Photos and Music nothing changes, in fact I can deselect all but 100 MB and it still says there's not enough Hard Drive space on the MacMini.  I've made sure that there isn't a same user name and run Disk Utility Disk Permissions many times to ensure the hardware is good.
I manually moved the Music and Pictures and reduced the Time Machine image size to under 250 GB but I still get the same message each and every time.  After spending $30 today on a Firewire 800 cable I'm at my wits end.  Can anyone suggest where to go next? I've looked at the console log and don't see anything that can point me in the next direction...
Should I get on the console and call the Setup Assistant and erase my machine after I've taken hours to transfer the Pics and Music or is there a better way?

What data do you actually want to migrate? Is it just 'user data' or applications & other files?
For a user data only migration
If the iMac is still setup with the user account I would forget about the Time Machine disk or using Migration Assistant and try a manual migration. It is an involved process, but if the files copy OK you can create the user account & it should be fine.
Start the old iMac in a normal boot, login as an admin user, ideally in an account you do not want to transfer to the Mini (create a new one if you need).
Boot the Mini in Target Disk Mode and attach to the iMac.
You need to copy the desired user home folder(s) from the iMac into the /Users folder on the Mini.
Assuming this file copy works (it's unclear if the issues in MA are due to problems in your file systems) you can disconnect the Mini & reboot it.
If the copy fails use recovery mode to repair both Macs - repair the filesystem & permissions in Disk Utility & retry.
On the Mini open 'System Preferences > Users & groups' and authenticate. Double check the name of the user folder you copied over, this is the users 'short name' a.k.a 'Account name' it must not contain any spaces, the 'Full name' can have spaces.
Create a new user with the 'foldername' as the 'Account name'. If it is correct you will be prompted to 'use existing folder'.
Agree to use that folder & the OS will make the new user & assign the correct permissions to that home folder. If you get no prompt double check the name matches the folder in /Users.
Repeat for any other user accounts.
Reboot the Mini & try to log in as the new user.
I would not attempt to migrate applications via this method - too many files can be scattered all over the disk by Application installers, it's simpler to reinstall using the installers, grab new copies from the developer or from the App Store etc.
Network & System settings will also be left behind & iTunes will require you to authorise the Mac, but most other things should be fine inside the migrated user account.
If you are uncertain ask & I'll try to clarify, as ever backup important data before you begin, disconnect the backups to reduce the risk of accidentally deleting the wrong thing & good luck

  • External Hard Drive Mac/PC Partition

    Hello,
I'm wondering if it's possible to partition my Maxtor One Touch hard drive, with a DOS partition and a OSX partition. I don't think it's possible with Disk Utility, does anybody know if there is another free application that would do this? I need to transfer files from school (Windows) and to my laptop (Mac). I can't install any software on the school computers, as they are not mine.
    Thanks

    Hi Jeremy,
It takes a bit of work in Terminal but you can have one partition FAT32 and one HFS+. Another option is to format the entire drive FAT32 but you couldn't backup System files to it, only data.

  • IS it possible to share external hard drive Mac To Mac, over a PC network,

I would like to explain this situation in it's own post so it's clear. I am at my brother's house (PC user) and both my wife and I are Mac users who are on the network. I have an external hard drive which is plugged directly into my wife's Macbook. I am trying to access it from my Macbook pro. This is my first time sharing and this is what I have done:
I went into "sharing" on her Macbook and turned file sharing on.
I added the mounted drive as a 'shared folder' and made everyone able to read and write.
Under 'options' I checked all of the boxes, including AFT, SMB and FTP (was I suppose to do this?)
Now, when I am on my Macbook Pro I look at the network and I see the PC network server, and her Macbook there (along with another weird network folder called "Mac001ff3cdf6ff", which I'll get to in a minute)
When I click on her computer and connect, I see the folders there which I've previously been able to share.
However, there is no external drive to be seen, even though it is mounted on her desktop of her Macbook downstairs.
When I go back and connect to this strange network folder called "Mac001ff3cdf6ff", however, I see again all the folders that I see when I click on my wife's Macbook folder AND the external hard drive..which is great...BUT, why can't I see this when I click on her Macbook folder? I did notice too that the icon is a PC icon for "Mac001ff3cdf6ff" when I click on 'more info, says "PC server".
Does this mean that the only way for me to access the external hard drive is through a PC server and this is the 'long way around' to get into the external drive? And why can't I connect directly from my wife's Macbook icon in the network folder?
Help please! Thank you. I hope this is more clear.

Is there anyone out there who has had success with sharing an external hard drive over a network from Mac to Mac? I just can't figure this out! It's so weird. When I look in the network places I see the icon for my wife's computer, and the PC ones of my brother in law's drives connected to the network. And ONE of those PC icons (you know, the one with the blue screen of death on them?) is labeled with "mac934ffsg" or something similar. I've been experimenting and when I add the hard drive in "shared", or if I add another folder in 'shared' on her computer it is THIS icon in the network that is updated.
Does anybody come close to my situation? Is there anyone sharing a couple different Macs over a network set up with PC's?
    This is driving me batty...

  • Airport Extreme + shared USB hard drive // Mac + PC Access

We are getting ready to purchase an Airport Extreme for our home network. Here's what we are working with:
    1) Airport Extreme
    2) MacBook
    3) MacMini
    4) PC
    5) TBD USB hard drive that will be connected to AirPort Extreme *for use as shared hard drive*
From the Apple website, regarding the Airport Extreme "Hard Drive Sharing":
+How does it work? Just connect the external hard drive to the USB port on the back of your AirPort Extreme and — voilà — all the documents, videos, photos, and other files on the drive instantly become available to anyone on the secure network, Mac and PC users alike. It’s perfect for file sharing, collaborative projects, and more.+
Can anyone recommend a specific brand and model USB hard drive that they have experience with in this scenario that was/is used as a shared drive that is accessible from both Macs and PCs?
I ask this question because I have a WD external hard drive that did not play nice - it was either PC or Mac, not both.
    Thanks

I have 1-4 and a Seagate FreeAgent Desk drive (not an endorsement, just answering your question), and can access the drive from all of 2-4. How you format the drive and/or what files you store on the drive will affect your ability to access/use those files on the drive from Mac/PC. For example, I can't use my iTunes library stored on the drive from the PC, as it's formatted for Mac. Honestly, I never have accessed the drive from my PC until you asked this question, but it worked!

  • Not Recognizing External Hard Drive Mac Book Pro

    Good Day!
I have a 2010 Mac Book Pro that I just downloaded the neww OS X Lion for the upgrades ext... I haven't had any other problems exept that before I downloaded the Lion my Mac would recognize my external hard drive (WD passport).  And now it doesn't, I even go to the finder and it doesn't even show up under "computer"  to make sure there isn't anything wrong with my external hard drive I plugged it into another mac that doesn't have Lion and it would work.  Please Help because my external drive has everything 1TG of everything...
    Thanks!!!

    Hi,
I had already checked in Finder's Pref's for the check mark for External Disks and it is checked.  That is for external disks to show up on your desk top.
So still no luck for my Mac to reconize my external hard drive with this new OS X Lion Program.  Should I just take my computer into the apple store?
    Thank you!!

  • Network Shared Hard Drive Mac/PC

Not really sure where to start this topic, but this seemed a good place to start.
Like many of us out there, I have tons GB's of music, video, and pictures stored and backed-up. Well, after doing some research and some hard decision making I bought an 300GB; should be enough for a while, ethernet external hard drive to store everything. Got a Western Digital that is both WIN/MAC compatible of course.
    Here are my questions:
    1. What kind of issues will I run into? Some days I am 100% on my iMac and sometimes 100% on my ole Dell. NEVER at the same time mind you. Both run iTunes and I am sure I will have both acecssing my music folder on the shared drive. Again, NOT at the same time.
    2. Putting pictures on the shared drive will hopfully give me easy access from my iMac with iPhoto. I am tired of burning CDs, using my flash media, etc. to transfer to my Mac. Will there be any issues here?
    3. I plan to back up all my videos from iTunes to the shared drive. Will there be any problem with iTunes on a Mac and iTunes on a PC accessing the same files?
Clearly, I do not mean they will be accessing at the same time!!! I can see how that would really f'things up. Thanks for the help and advice.

    Craig,
I don't know the answer for sure, but here's what I think:
Mac OSX is based on Unix, which is an operating system that's case sensitive and "case preserving". Windows is neither case sensitive nor case preserving. Even if iTunes uses the exact same file arrangement on the Windows version as it does on the Mac version (and most likely that's the case) my feeling is that eventually you may find a situation in which a song added on your windows computer will not be found by the mac even though it's showing in iTunes.
Have you considered using iTunes' capability for sharing playlists? If you have either of those computers turned on at all times, you could leave iTunes running in the background, sharing the entire library. That way you could listen to songs on both systems without problems.
    I hope this helps. Regards,
    Julian

In the Utlities folder (in the Applications folder) you should find an application called "Boot Camp Assistant". Run that and it will give you the option to restore your drive.
