HT2523 TextEdit always displays in an Asian font.

Whenever I try to open a document with TextEdit that's been created on a different computer, or downloaded, it displays with an Asian font. (My guess is Japanese.)
So, for example, if I create a document in TextEdit on my work computer and save it on Dropbox, when I get to this computer and open the document, it opens up with all of the text in Japanese. If I drag the document to Word and open it there, it opens and is in English and is just fine -- but I don't understand why it's opening ALL TextEdit documents using the wrong font. This happens with readme files downloaded from online, too. I just can't open documents with TextEdit!
I've checked what font is default, and it's Monaco and Helvetica.
Does anyone have any ideas about what's causing this and how to fix it? I'm running 10.6.8 on a 3.06 GHz Intel Core Duo iMac.

Such problems normally have nothing to do with fonts, but relate to encodings.  Asian characters may mean the encoding is set to UTF-16.  Check TextEdit/Preferences/Open and Save/Plain Text File Encodings/Opening Files.

  • Asian fonts display in font book but show as Western fonts in apps!

Adobe apps still display Asian fonts as Western characters, even though I've changed language settings via the "international" control panel of System Preferences. Perhaps I have not done this correctly? I've restarted the machine after changes to Systems language prefs. Asian and other calligraphic fonts are all installed and display fine in Font Book. Is there a fix?

As my aim is to access character sets without the
need to change the language settings on my machine
That's exactly what Character Palette does.
think the ideal solution is to get a copy of
Fontographer and copy all the decorative fonts and
    save them as standard fonts.
A total waste of time in my view.
    True Futhark has several
characters that stand for phonetics not compatible
with plain roman alpha/qwerty keyboard use. I
understand the same is true of other fonts-there are
    bound to be discrepancies.
Most of the characters in the world are not compatible with qwerty keyboard use. That's why in general people don't use that method to produce them, or try to jigger fonts so they might be able to.
    Perhaps this is why so
many characters come up as "?" even when inserted
    via the Finder's character palette?
This may be because your app is set to Latin-1 or some other limited encoding. It should be set to UTF-8. Try Character Palette with TextEdit and you will not get any ?'s.
Control+T does nothing in Adobe apps, as far as I can
see. Apple+T brings up the Type palette but there is
no "insert special character" option there.
I got that wrong. The combo for Apple apps is Option + Apple + T. I don't know if that works in Adobe (don't use them myself).
    I did notice a wonderful
Tibetan font that must be on my machine somewhere,
though it does not show up in Font Book under "All
    Fonts"!
These are part of the ST series of Chinese fonts. If you go to the Tibetan range in Character Palette you can see this and you can also input them in TextEdit or a UTF-8 doc. Or you can examine the contents of an ST font by putting Character Palette in glyph mode.
I guess ideally, for graphics use, one should get the
characters into a standard font file, as I suggest
above, and then type away merrily qwerty-style.
Some Asian scripts have thousands of characters. Using a qwerty keyboard to try to access a few of them from a recoded font is not something that anyone does as far as I know. They use a specialized Input Method or the Character Palette or a similar utility. Also unless you are truly transforming your output into graphics/photos, your input would be seen as qwerty on other machines.
suppose these decorative fonts are available on the
web somewhere, where those who sell them have gone to
the trouble of transcribing the characters in to an
    'ordinary' font for you?
    Never seen such things myself.
It seems a shame that Macs OSX can't grant you access
to all these decorative fonts (indeed, to all
installed fonts) in a more straight forward manner.
The Character Palette is the most straightforward manner possible for accessing such scripts, if you do not want to switch keyboard layouts. All computer system use a similar mechanism. It even has a Favorites section where you can store characters you want to use frequently so you can avoiding looking them up each time. If you have some specific problems using it, I'd be glad to help, here or by email (click on my name for the address).
Am I correct in these assumptions?
No, I think all of them are wrong myself.

  • How can I always display duplicate email messages in Apple Mail?

I would like to have Apple Mail ALWAYS display "duplicate" messages without having to click on the duplicates link in the upper right of the message.
Apple Mail identified a series of messages as "duplicates" when in fact they were not duplicates.  I would have otherwise missed out on very important information and the only reason I even knew to look for this was because I saw them on my iPhone.  I want to avoid this issue in the future.

Comfortable with terminal...know how to edit using TextEdit:
Open up a Terminal and use the following commands to change your Mail.app preferences file to an XML format – the default format is binary, and you can't edit this.
    cd ~/Library/Preferences
    plutil -convert xml1 com.apple.mail.plist
Then, open this file com.apple.mail.plist with a text editor of your choice, preferably one that highlights XML syntax, but you can also use TextEdit:
    open -a "TextEdit" com.apple.mail.plist
Now, look for the key called MailAccounts. It's value is an array, with dict children. Here, you'll find all your mail accounts in the order they were created in.
You can now manually move these dict children around. Save the XML file and reopen Mail. Now, your Mail account order will be changed.

  • Having Problem with Asian Fonts

I'm having a problem installing the packages ttf-arphic-ukai and ttf-arphic-uming.  They install fine, but it completely corrupts all my fonts.
Any new applications that are launched (or when KDE is relaunched) have nothing but boxes for the fonts, and, when I log out of KDE to KDM, everything appears as boxes.  If I log in to KDE and check out the Fonts section in KControl, it just crashes.
Thinking it was just a KDE issue, I installed Fluxbox, and it won't even start.
This is a brand new installed based off of the 0.7.2 base ISO, and I've updated everything completely.  Before the fonts are installed, everything is working perfectly.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

On Friday I started to develop a page that had japanese translation. I had no problems with it.
Anyway, I realized something that may help you. No matter what font i choosed, japanesse characters where allways showed, and they were always the same.
It means that asian fonts override standard fonts. What can be happening to you is that you don't have the fonts properly configured (either the fonts by themselves, or in Xorg).
I don't know enough about fonts to give you more information about it, but what you should do after reading this is uninstall all asiatic fonts, install japanese fonts, install kde-i18n-jp and create an a user account with KDE set to japanese language and see if it works well to you. If it does not work then the problem is in your configuration. If it works well then do the same with the asian fonts. If they are still not working then to me it looks as a bug, and you should report it.

  • Bookmarks Appearing in Asian Font

    Hi
Running Acrobat 8 on new iMac. (10.6.4)
When I try to make a new bookmarkusing the select text/Command+B
    I'm getting asian font displaying.
When I do it manually by selecting the text copy, make new bookmark using the menu options and pasting, it comes out fine?
I've trashed Preference and have eveything updated and patched up.
    Thanks
    Marcus

The font is called "Apple Chancery".
    Location /Library/Fonts/Apple Chancery.dfont
Unique name Apple Chancery; 6.0d2e1; 2006-07-19
    I'm on Leopard 10.5.8 and DVDSP4.2.1, with Photoshop CS4.
It might be that DVDSP4 is not accessing a font collection called "Apple"?
Also, in Font Book, Chancery does not appear in the 'All Fonts' list, nor 'English', nor 'User', nor 'Computer'. But if I search, it shows up.
It seems that PS is accessing a broader list than DVDSP4.
    Any thoughts?

  • Asian font coming out wonky

This doesn't seem to happen w/ PB, but MBP. Why is it that sometimes...like 50% of the time when I send an email in an Asian font, it comes out all fudged for the reciever? This is absurd.

That's good. Mail is very good about handling fonts; it reads the headers on the incoming mail, and automatically adjusts the fonts for you. When sending mail with international characters, it will send it in Unicode, which will work on the other end---with a few exceptions. One of those exceptions is when the receiving mail program uses Japanese code pages (ISO-2022-JP). Depending on what mail program the receiver uses, it may or not read the headers in your email and make the necessary adjustments.
I think the fact that it works on your Powerbook and not always on your MBP is coincidence---Mail is the same program. If your recipients are using Outlook, Outlook Express, or Thunderbird, they can either change the text encoding for viewing when your mail arrives, or set their readers to use Unicode in preferences---easy to do. Should also work the same way for any Web mail program---they just change the view for text encoding. For cell phones, they can't do that. You'd have to open Terminal and change the default to ISO-2022-JP for cell phones.
So, unless I'm missing something, the problem is on the recipients end, and not something on your end.

  • The PDF output is not always displayed!

    Hello
I'm tryin' to build some PDF outputs and I have the next problem: I have 20 reports to make it on PDF form (viewed with the Acrobat plugin from IE 5.5 or higher) and when I try to see what was builded the PDF it's not always displayed ( mean it's not readed by the plugin). I generate the PDF output from a servlet (which also set the servlet output context as 'application/pdf') and, if the output it's generated too fast (meanning the report information was too small), the Acrobat plugin doesn't catch him ! I think that I have to slow down the servlet response to allow the plugin complete loading, but I don't khow how to do this (and, ofcourse, if it's possible).

Can anyone help me?, I keep resetting the font preference to English, but many of the second half of my font list in PS keeps showing in Asian fonts not allowing me to see what the font preview looks like at all. These same fonts are in English in Ai on my computer with no trouble seeing the preview in English, but when using PS, they are not understandable. These fonts include ( see attachment) Odd because many of the standard fonts are preview just fine and then the lower list still is unreadable as it remain in Asian font. Help?

  • Clock icon always displays 10:15:00

    Hi,
It's more a comment than a question but the icon for the calendar always displays the correct date, the icon for messages displays the number of new messages. So why is it that the icon for the clock doesn't display the correct time ? I suppose updating the icon every second would be too much but it should be possible to do that every minute ?

The same reason the Weather app displays Sun and 73 degrees. Updating the information all that time would affect battery life, so Apple's decision was to leave it. The calendar app only has to update once every 24 hours, and the small icon for Messages and Mail only occurs when you receive something.

The "always match my default message font" option in the Signature preferences from Mac Mail does not work if e-mail is received in other Mail Software. How can I make it work?

I found this plugin which solved pretty much all of my mail font rendering problems.  It is designed for Lion, so don't know whether it will work but thought I would offer it up.

  • How do I set the finder column view to always display the "thin" column edges?

Sometimes finder switches to display thick column edges. These screen shots were taken 5 min apart, after a restart.  I would love to know to to make sure it always displays the thin version.
Side note: does anyone know how to open new columns that automatically resize to fit the largest file name.....?    Having to constantly resize columns is really irritating.

it can not display what has not been downloaded, for them to be the same I assume you have chosen to leave messages on the server.
Date: is set by the sender and has nothing to do with a delivery date in Thunderbird. If Thunderbird is displaying the date the message arrived in Thunderbird, what is in the date: header?
Received: is a series of transmission points and following the instructions below will display the latest.
    * Select Tools/Options from the main menu.
    * Click Config Editor.
    * If a warning displays, click “I’ll be careful, I promise!”.
    * Locate the mailnews.customDBHeaders preference, e.g. by typing “dbh” in the Filter field. Double click it, or select and press Enter.
    * If the preference was not set previously, type “Received” and click OK. If some extension has already populated the preference, add “ Received” to the end of the list of headers, separating it with space.
    * Close the Config Editor and restart Thunderbird.
