That's correct. Media sync is one way. The iPad is not a backup or data transfer device.
Purchased media can be re-downloaded from the iTunes store using the same ID originally used to purchase it.
Other media had to come from iTunes on your computer to begin with.

An iTunes "library" is a collection of media and support files all working together. The .xml file is simply a listing of what tracks you have in your library and where they are located. You add a .xml file by using the import command in iTunes (I use an older version so I can't tell you exactly where but it should not be hard to find if you look at the various menu category listings).
Note, if you add just the .xml it will be pointing to files in specific locations. If that listing is not valid because iTunes cannot find the drive with the files then you will end up with a ton of broken links.
It might help at this stage to take a step back and tell us exactly what you have on this drive and what you are trying to accomplish. Sometimes people come here with questions the equivalent to, "How do I use a hammer?" for us only to discover they are trying to get a screw into a wall. -
I have a Mac mini, have installed iTunes on it and want to find some old playlists that were lost. I have several 'iTunes Libraries' with different dates but I cannot open any of them becauseit says they were created with a newer version of iTunes. Please help!
Somewhere in your process you ended up with an earlier version of iTunes than was used last with the library. iTunes 10.6.3 is the highest version that will run under OSX 10.5.8

If you had an earlier version and still want that version I am not sure how to go about this. My iTunes library file does not say it was created with a particular version, although I admit I have not looked at the .xml copy to see if it is buried in the file itself. Apple only has a very limited number of iTunes versions openly posted, though you can still find just about any version if you look in the right places. You would have to kind of start low and work your way up to where you want to be since once you open a library with a version it cannot be reverted to an earlier version (make backups first). -

Can anyone help - I am not the most technical of people, and this is my problem : I used to have a Mac mini (old-ish model, not Intel) and I uploaded hundreds of tracks from my CD collection onto my iPod Shuffle - which then appeared in iTunes. And that was great. I recently got a more modern Mac mini (Intel), and I copied all the music from the old computer onto a USB key, transferred that onto the new computer, opened iTunes - and none of my music was anywhere to be seen. I am presuming this might be because the music was not downloaded from iTunes but was put there by me. But I am hoping someone can tell me how I can find it again - I don't have the full list on my iPod Shuffle btw.
Hold on there...is your profile correct - are you really running 10.4.6 as it states? The oval title bar "button" in Finder (and other places, like the preferences of many apps) is gone in OS 10.5 Leopard...I suppose Apple decided "old Finder" was just too old.

No I have checked and it is not in any junk folder. When I joined apple I must have given them another email address which is no longer functional. Now caught in endless loop....I think I need to speak to apple rep to find out how to get out if this mess with old i.d.with a password that is impossible to find or change. I have quite a few apps on my ipad so I think I will need to try and find some way of keeping that I.d. and being able to access that account.
Any help would be appreciated. -

You need to move your iTunes folder from your old computer to your new computer, and transfer your contacts and pictures to the new computer as well.

Today I bought a brand new iPad mini 2, 32 gb. First, I backed up my old ipad mini to my hard drive. Then, I updated iTunes to the newest version. Then, I plugged in the new iPad mini, went through the set up, iTunes was working fine. I registered the iPad, then it suggested i update the iOS on the iPad. This is where things went south. After a few minutes, it stated "cannot update iOS 7 at this time" or something to that effect. Since that point, iTunes will not recognize the iPad. The iPad shows the "connect to iTunes" screen. When I plug it in, I hear the tone suggesting a new device is connected, but nothing happens. I've tried it in DFU mode, no results. I've tried putting it in recovery mode, nothing happens, just the same screen. I've uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it, following every step suggested through this site/apple support. I even uninstalled and installed an older version of iTunes (10.7) but same result. I've followed all troubleshooting steps, and nothing is working, so please don't suggest the same olf "iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows" page.
What should I do? Do I have to take this to the geniuses at the store? Will they even be able to help without having access to my computer?iPad not appearing in iTunes

That is not necessarily true. You are allowed to make a back-up of media you own and, at least in the Netherlands, even a copy of a work you've borrowed from a library. The law expressly permits this and you pay a certain amount for recordable media to allow for home use. See http://www.thuiskopie.nl/nl for this. If you then decide to destroy the media, i.e. do not transfer the media to someone else, I don't see how you infringe copyright by keeping the back-up. But I guess some so-called creatives like the idea of making money in all kinds of hypothetical ways...
It is a nice dream, where you have to work once and then earn a lot of money by selling millions of copies from your work. But buyers can make copies too!! Hahahahahaha! -

- Restore the iPod from that backup
