HT2614 how to open winmail attachments

how can I open winmail.dat attachments on my Mac.  I can on the Ipad but not the Mac.

Alternatively, ask the sender(s) to change their Microsoft Windows email client settings; that change can be done with the client for a specific recipient (you, in this case), or globally when Exchange Server and Active Directory is involved; details here (HT2614), and here and here at Microsoft.

  • How to open winmail.dat attachments???

Hi, this is my first use of this discussion forum, so here goes: Can anyone tell me how to open attachments I am sent on a regular basis that are winmail.dat attachments???

Search Google for "winmail.dat mac" and you'll find many solutions
Also note that this forum is for troubleshooting Apple Software Update for Windows, a software package for Windows designed to update Apple products that run on Windows, and not related to your issue, so you should really post search/post your question in the Mac OS X forums

  • How to open .msg attachments

I upgraded recently Leopard 10.5.1. Previously I was working 10.4.10 so I do not have experience with Mail from 10.5.0.
In Leopard Mail 3.1 (914/915) I am receiving some mails with files xyz.msg and abc.msg (example names) attached. Those files do not show up with the paper clip attachment symbol in the Message Viewer window but they do show up as attachments within the message themselves and under the messages 'attachment triangle'.
In 10.4.x these sorts of files used to be imbedded within the mail message itself - seemingly like HTML embedded content. I could read the content and print it from within Mail and it acted like a specially formatted part of the mail message. In 10.5.1 however, these attachments are not rendered in the message, clicking to open them or saving them to the Finder is fine but I do not know with which application they can be read. I tried Text Edit and Safari - both can open the .msg files but only as HTML source.
Has anyone out there seen this behavior and have an idea for how to view these attachments, or better still, view them in the original message as per the old behavior?
Although in 10.4 I had "Display remote images in HTML messages" turned off for security, I also tried that here without effect.
    Thanks to all.

I've had the same issue in 10.5.1 (not sure about 10.5.0). I've narrowed it down a bit however. I noticed that I always get the .msg (which can't really be read) when the sender uses Squirrelmail (webmail) to forward as attachment. When the sender uses Outlook and forwards as attachment, I get an email with no attachment. The size of the email indicates that there should be, but none is visible. However, when the sender uses Mail 3.1, the attachment works as expected (an envelope is shown that can be opened by a click).
Perhaps different mail clients use different methods when forwarding an email as an attachment? I'm sure this is a bug in Mail, but it certainly is frustrating!
Has anyone else seen this sort of behavior?

1- we use exchange server 2003
    2- outlook 2003 as a client
I know that exchange sends these files in rtf format is there a work around so i can read my documents !!!Message Edited by amrlotus on 12-Apr-200702:48 PM

I tried changing the extension, which sort of works. I sent an email to my wife's iMac from my PC, which had several .jpg and one .pdf files attached. It shows up in Mail with a single winmail.dat file attached. I changed it to a.pdf, and it opened the pdfonly. I couldn't get the jpgs to open, even with a .jpg extesion.
First of all, why in the world would it do this? Second, how do I open them since they are mixed type, and several at once? Seems ridiculaous that a Mac does this to attachments, BTW.

  • How to open winmail.dat?

I am trying to open a winmail.dat attached email file and have tried all options available, is there a trick or is additional s/w applicaitons needed?

winmail.dat is usually an attachment from a mail that sent by outlook.
Because the email has already been sent using this method you wioll not be able to read it.
You will able to get around this by configuring the email client (the person that sent the email) to sent mail as a html/text format.

  • How to open pics attachments?

Since switching from tmobil I cannot open or download a single attachment in text messages?

Have you kept your T-Mobile phone or did you get a new one? Which phone do you have? If you kept your T-Mobile phone you may need to configure the MMS network settings for AT&T. The instructions for different devices can be found here: https://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB8924&cv=820

  • Open winmail.dat files?

Anyone know how to open winmail.dat files?  I've been getting email attachments which I can't open on my MBP.

    Hi ,
The person that is sending you emails, has chosen in Outlook, to use the RTF format, for emailing and or specifically for emailing you. Perhaps this is default Outlook behavior at times.
This results in the winmail.dat file, which is the RTF format, of the attachments that were intended for you.
If the user would configure Outlook, to use the HTML (web)  format, for emails, then you would receive the attachments as intended. As well as anybody else.
Apple mail and other mail systems, do not understand the RTF (rich text) format, and probably have to pay Microsoft licensing fees, to be able to use this format.
The options, for setting this in Outlook, differ for different versions of Outlook, but are found generally under
Tools > Address book, for setting a specific person to , use HTML format, and not RTF format, that persons email.
Also, under "Tools" > "Options", > "Mail format", for setting that all emails, will use the HTML format, instead of the RTF format.
