HT2646 Do I need 2 HDMI cables to hook up my HD TV

I just bought an AppleTV to allow us to view Netflix on an HD TV but I'm a bit confused about how to set it up. My first question has to do with the HDMI cables, currently there is already one that connects the cable box to the tv but it looks like there needs to be another one to connect the tv to the appletv but there's only one HDMI plug on the TV so how can I set it up? Or, maybe I can't? I don't know so I'm looking for some support, thanks.
Secondly, I intend to use this device at our winter get away in Florida, we live in Michigan, but there's no wi-fi at the condo. I thought I should be able to use the "personal hotspot" on my iPhone 4s as my wi-fi connection, will this work? Will my Netflix subscription be enough to allow us to watch or do I have to set up a "cloud" account?
I know I'm asking a lot of questions but I will greatly appreciate any assistance the community can provide, thanks!
Jack

Welcome to the Apple Community Jack.
You will need to purchase an HDMI switch to connect both devices to your TV.
Even if you could use it from a hotspot, you would find it would eat through your data allowance in a very short time.

  • I have a macbook pro, a mini display port to hdmi cable to hook up to my tv (a toshiba 1080p flatscreen).  what do I do to actually get the image on the tv screen?  Do I need another cable for sound?

I am trying to watch a tv show that I purchased into I-tunes.  I have the cable and it hooks to the TV okay.  The TV shows the regular apple screen that looks like the universe screen - like when it boots up or is doing an upgrade on the OS.  I can't get the image to go from the laptop to the TV.  I tried under displays and it shows the TV as a display but I can't get the image on the TV.......Please help.

I need to know which MacBook Pro you have.  Only mid-2010  and later MBP's transmit sound through MiniDisplay Port to HDMI.  I have no information about the Mac Pro, so you might want to go to that Forum and ask there.

No, you need an appropriate adaptor which you can purchase from Apple's Online Store. They also sell the Griffin adaptor that works with several types of video out ports on Macs.

  • Mini-DVI to DVI Adaptor HDMI Cable Question.

    Hello All,
I have a mini-DVI port on my white 2008 macbook. I recently bought the Apple mini-DVI to DVI adatpor, hooked up to a DVI/HDMI Cable, which hooks up to my television, a 32 inch Sony HDTV. The TV seems to recognize the connection as the desktop shows up on my television, however there are no icons, it is just my background picture on my computer. Even when I am surfing the internet or playing a video, there is nothing that shows up. I have tried it with 3 different televisions, and used my roommate's computer and hooked it up to different televisions, with no luck.
Does anyone have any idea why I am just getting the background picture on my computer on my television, without any icons or anything else showing up?

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. In System Preferences>Display there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen. You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.

  • I used an HDMI cable to connect my MacBook Pro and my TV, however, my computer won't recognize that my TV is connected. What do I need to do to be able to watch a movie from my Mac on my TV screen?

My Macbook doesn't have an HDMI port, so I bought a converter. So I now I have my HDMI connected to my Mac and my TV. The problem is, I can't figure out how to make my computer screen show up on my TV. Do I need to download different software or update something? Or is it as easy as changing a setting?
When I go to my display settings, my computer screen shows up as an option, but my TV does not. I don't think my computer is reading it is connected. Please help me.
I will openly admit that I don't know very much about computers, so if you can help me, please break your explaination down for me. This is the info for my Mac:
    I have a Macbook Pro 13-inch,
    Mid 2010 OS X
    Version 10.9.3
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256MB

I am assuming that you are using a Mini Display to HDMI converter and then a HDMI cable.
Have you opened System Preferences>Displays and selected Detect Displays?
    Ciao.

  • What cables do I need to connect my 2013 macbook pro to my HD tv? I know I need mini display to HDMI, but male? female HDMI??? and also, do I need a separate cable for sound?

Actually you need a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter. It will carry both audio and video.
This one will work: Mini DisplayPort | Thunderbolt® to HDMI® Adapter w/ Audio Support

  • I'm trying to watch a movie from my iPad on my tv with Hdmi  cable.  Do I need to do anything to the tv to make this work?

I'm trying to watch a movie from my iPad on my tv with Hdmi  cable.  Do I need to do anything to the tv to make this work?

Not really. Using the correct Digital Av adapter and connecting the iPad to the Tv through one of its HDMI ports is all it takes. Of course making sure the correct input is selected in the Video source selection on the TV.

  • I want to connnect my early 2012 MBP to my LG HDMI. I have the HDMI cable. What connector do I need for the laptop?

Please give me the name of the connector for the laptop. Is it a "display port"?

Note that you'll find two alternatives: one that has a TB plug at one end and a little box with a female HDMI jack at the other or a cable that has male TB and HDMI plugs at both ends. First one gives you the flexibility of using a standard HDMI cable of whatever length you need, at an extra cost. Second simplifies things and eliminates one connection (and possible point of failure), but may limit how far away you can place the computer from the display.

  • What is the type of cable do i need for a macbook white to connect to a hdmi cable?

what is the type of cable do i need for a macbook white to connect to a hdmi cable? This is quite a problem since macbook white is not in production anymore.

First we need to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody have a Mini DisplayPort. The Early 2006 model 1,1 through Early 2008 model 4,1s plus the Early and Mid 2009 model 5,2s have Mini-DVI ports. Each would take a different adapter to connect with the TV.

Hi, deployed to Europe and trying to set up my Apple TV to a JVC Model LT-32EX18, help, it has a 2 port HDMI input, what do I need to purchase in order to set up? TIA

Apple TV doesn't come with HDMI cable, so you would have had to buy the cable separately unless the Apple TV was bought used. Did you purchase the device from Apple or an authorized reseller?
Are you sure you're trying the right input?
The other is a smaller one that is for micro USB (which is used for support purposes only)

  • I have a MacBook Pro 6.2 and a Samsung HPT5054 HD TV. Can I play a DVD from my Mac to my TV with an adapter and an HDMI cable or do I need an audio cable also?

Can I watch a DVD o my TV from my laptop with an adapter and HDMI cable or do I need an audio cable as well?

A seperate audio cable isn't required for your MBpro model.  It will send audio over the HDMI cable if you use the proper MiniDisplay port to HDMI adapter that supports audio.

The model 7,1 is actually the Mid 2010 MacBook and is the only MacBook with a Mini DisplayPort that sends audio along with the video, Here's some Mini DisplayPort to HDMI with audio adapters from Amazon.

  • Dose the HDMI Cable have Audio Support or do I need to use the Optical Audio Port on the ATV?

I recently noticed that the Apple TV has an "Optical Audio" port on the back, next to the HDMI port. Before I buy one, will I need to buy a Optical Audio cable, or will the HDMI cable suply sound to the TV?

HDMI carries both audio and video. The optical port is for connecting to a receiver/external speakers.

You will need something such as this:
    http://www.amazon.com/A-Sonic-HDMI-HD15-Male-Cable/dp/B001OLCHJ6
    Ciao.
Note that this will only transmit video.  If you need sound, the audio output port will have to be tapped.

no need to go for an expensive HDMI cable as Varjak Paw rightly suggests.
Pretty much all of them come with 1.4 standard these days.
The difference in price is made by additional shielding and material used for the wire - hardly ever needed at home installations - unless you get interference from other devices.
    on the other note.
one HDMI in your TV is obviously not ideal as well as using HDMI splitter or hub - but it should work.
Also I know cases that some LG TV models do not work with Apple TV - which was confirmed by LG technical support.
Those are rare cases and i do not want to worry you at this stage.
