what does the "other" category consist of when syncing iPhone

"Other" data is real data that you put on your phone by using the built in apps. It is not music, not videos, not pictures and not App Store app data. It is "OTHER" meaning everything that does not fall into these categories. Such as:
email messages and attachments
Reminders
Calendar entries
Contacts
Text messages
iMessages
MMS messages and attachments
Genius data
Music cover art
Music library database index (but not the music itself)
Operating system settings
Safari cache
bookmarks
Game Center status
Music catalog
You will find posts from people who said they recovered over 3 GB of space by just deleting old text messages.
If you want Other to be smaller you will have to keep less data on your phone; delete old MMS and texts, delete old email (especially from the "deleted" folder), clear the cache, eliminate cover art.
Sometimes "Other" includes data corruption. If you suspect this is a possibility try connecting to iTunes and click the Restore iPhone button. First restore from backup; the Other doesn't get any smaller you can Restore again and set up as New, then add your content back separately from your backup.

  • HT1386 what does the "other" category (yellow) mean when I entail my iPhone to my MacBook?

When I connect my iPhone to my MacBook and go to Sync it, it shows that I have 4GB used up for "other". What is this "other" material on my phone? All I know of that I have is photos, apps, and music ...

"other" is the content that does not fit into the other categories - favorites, history, app data, etc
More than a gb or so indicates corrupt files.
    A restore should resolve.

What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.
    First try:
"First you go settings/general/usage/music/then left swipe over music and press delete and you would think it deletes your music but it doesn't instead it deletes your other but make sure your ipod is connected to a computer while doing this"

Next, usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

  • HELP!!!!!!  What does the "Other" category mean when iPhone is on iTunes???

    Hey,
I was fixing to sync my 3G iPhone when i realized i didnt have enough room for what i wanted because the "other" category is taking up so much space. Ive reset iTunes and iPhone but still see so much space taken up by "other." I've deleted all emails and texts and only have a few pictures on my iPhone but the "other" still takes up over 3gigs on my iPhone.
What is the "other" section and how do i get rid of items that the phone puts in the "other" category???
Also, as another seperate problem, i believe, i cant seem to locate the application link in my itunes library anymore for some reason even though the tab under the iPhone device link recognizes my applications in iTunes. How do I get the Applications link back in my iTunes library?
    THank you so much!!!

I checked my prefernces and you were right, the applications weren't checked. Thank you.
As far as my "other" problem.....before i do the restore, how do I backup my iPhone? When i clicked on restore a moment ago it said it will erase my phone but i thought that iTunes periodically backedup my phone anyways.

  • When syncing, what does the 'Other' category refers to?

I sync my iPad to a computer originally.  Now that I've purchased another computer I'm trying to sync to it but I'm unable to determine had to make sure the 'other' category is not lost during the transfer.  Any help would be appreciated.

Don't sweat it.  "Other" is primarily the Operating System  (IOS).

  • What does the "other" section consist of? What does it do?

It is taking up way too much space on my iphone. It takes up 2.45 GB! Its driving me insane! PLease tell me what it does and how I can reduce the "other " section to at least 1GB. I've tried deleting history, other apps, phone calls, and etc. It helps a little but not too much. Please help me. Thanks!

This post is two months old.
The poster has likely solved by now.

  • What does the 'other' comprise of on a restored iPhone?

    Hi there,
Firstly I should begin by stating that I cannot use my iPhone because it has no screen on it - but I will be getting it fixed tomorrow, which is why I'm here.
Now, I opted to restore the device in an attempt to erase every single bit of data that remained on the phone ahead of the repair. The reason I did this is I do not want some iPhone guy looking through my photos and videos. No, I am not a pervert or a paedophile - but I did have many, many risque pictures and videos on the device due to a group with my friends in Whatsapp. We post silly, gross pictures and videos to each other - it's guy-sh*t you know.
However, I look on my iTunes and, while there is no music or video left on the phone, there is 410.1 MB of 'other' content which has remained. Are these the pictures I don't want the tech-guy to see when he fixes the phone, or is it something else? Before you say: "Why don't you just look on the phone?", I refer you to the part where I mentioned the phone has no screen, so I can't use the phone to check if the pictures are there.
    I would appreciate a reply.
    Cheers.

restoring your phone as NEW will wipe out others and all data and contents on your phone.
Anything over 1 or 2 GB means corrupted files.

  • What does the other storage consist of?

My macbook is saying that the internal storage is almost full.
I would like to try and clear some of my 'Other' but i am not sure what it consists of.

OmniDiskSweeper  is a freeware program that catalogs your drive and shows what you have and how much space it uses. You may find it useful. There are other similar shareware programs that are somewhat friendlier. You may find it useful to look at some of them including WhatSize and DaisyDisk.
Keep in mind that media files (video, music, & digital photos) tend to be very large while documents tend to be rather small in the greater scheme of things. Applications run the gamut from small to gargantuan. For this reason I tend to look at media first.

  • What means the "OTHER" category on my iPod ?

What means the OTHER category on my iPod Touch 4th Gen ?
Because it take A LOTS of my stockage... ~7.5GB / 32GB...

Other is usually around 1 GB...
A  ' Large Other ' usually indicates Corrupt Data...
First Try a Restore from Backup... But... if the Large Other Persists, that is an Indicator of Corrupt Data in the Backup... Then a Restore as New is the way to go...

When looking at how much room is taken up by audio, apps, etc. on your phone in iTunes, what is the "other" category?

"Other" contains documents and app data associated with apps.  It can also contain things like stored emails and browser history.  It's usually around 1-2gigs.  If it's any more than that, there's a chance that you have corrupted data on your iPad.  The only way to fix that problem is to restore your iPad to factory settings and start anew.
