HT2731 If kids entered my Apple ID on their new iPhone can I change it and they keep what they already downloaded on phone?

When my kids got iPods several yrs ago I set up an Apple ID. When I later got an iPhone I used the same ID. Now they have iPhones. I understand it's best for them to have their own Apple ID. Can they initially connect using my Apple ID to retrieve all their music and apps then change to a new ID? One of my kids already used my Apple ID and downloaded apps. If I now create her a new Apple ID will everything she already downloaded onto her phone stay? How does multiple ID's affect the iTunes account?

You really should download and read the user guide that roaminggnome gave you the link for in the post above.
If you want to totally start from scratch and erase all of her content go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings. This removes everything from the device and returns it to out of the box status. You can also restore the iPad as a new device in iTunes and that erases everything as well. Double click on the text of the iPad's name on the left grey source list of iTunes and you can change the name of the iPad. In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")

You can set up your iCloud account on your iOS device under: "Settings > iCloud" and a other account for store purchases under "Settings > iTunes & App Stores". Unfortunately merging accounts is not possible but you could transfer all of your music manually via iTunes from your Mac or PC.

It sounds like you're unexpectedly seeing the incorrect Apple ID on your iPhone 5s. You can use these steps to sign out of iCloud on your iPhone 5s and sign in with the right Apple ID:
iOS 6 and later: Go to Settings > iCloud.
If you're still signed in with your previous Apple ID:
Scroll down and tap Delete Account [Sign Out in iOS 8.] Depending on what iCloud options are turned on, you'll be asked to confirm that you want to delete data from your device. To confirm, tap Delete. (If you're using iOS 7 and have Find My iPhone turned on, you'll be asked to enter the password for your previous Apple ID. Enter the password, then tap Turn Off.) The data will be deleted from your device, but not from iCloud.
Enter your current Apple ID to sign in. The data from your iCloud account will download again to your device.

You can't merge accounts, if you start using the gmail account for iCloud by logging out of the me ID in system preferences and back in using the gmail ID, you'll need to copy all your data in calendars etc to the gmail account. you also won't be able to use the me address for mail unless you add the me account as a secondary account at system preferences > mail, contacts and calendars.

There is no chance at all that you can activate the iPad without the previous user's Apple ID and password. That is the feature of iOS 7 Activation Lock.
Every time I read one of these post, I can't help but think that the user asking about this (in this case - you) was duped into purchasing a stolen device. If the seller was legit, they would have erased the device completely before they sold it.
