HT2905 Deleting songs, duplicate songs, and renaming songs

On my iTunes I am unable to delete any songs from my iPhone, nor am I able to select the 'Display Duplicates' or Delete them either. I can't even rename a song!
Things I have tried for deleting songs:
Shift+CTRL+Delete
Delete button
Looking under settings on both my iPhone and iTunes for an option to enable the above problems in the opening
I have deleted the songs in both the downloads folder that my songs go to, and from the iTunes music (This deleted the songs from that but not my actual iPhone music).
Right Clicking the song and looking for delete option (no such option exists under the 'Devices' portion of iTunes)
Things I have tried for duplicate songs:
Right clicking the song and looking for delete option (again no such option exists)
Tried clicking the 'Display Duplicate' option but iTunes has it blocked and I am unable to click it (faded grey colour)
Things I have tried for renaming songs:
Right clicking the song>Get Info>Info and I can't click on anything it's all blocked
Double clicking song title still unable to edit the song like I used to be able to do in previous iTunes
Triple clicking song title
Hoping someone can help me with these issues as this is very frustrating,
KelseyP91.

If your iPhone syncs with iTunes you need to tidy up in iTunes, then sync, not try to edit the content of the iPhone manually within iTunes.
I've written a script called DeDuper which can help remove unwanted duplicates. See this thread for background.
If the device has duplicates, but iTunes doesn't, then you can swipe and delete all duplicated items directly on the iPhone, then sync with iTunes to put the songs back onto the device. One of the iTunes build seem to have the potential to leave orphaned tracks on the device which are then not cleared up by further syncing.

I recently purchased songs from my iphone.  All good...  But I then went to put them on my ipod touch.  They seemed to have downloaded but the songs wont play and the song title/the text, appears in a grey colour and there is a downlaod symbol in front of the song title.  what do i do next??  They play on my iphone and from the itunes library but not from my ipod touch.

If the songs are still on your ipod, make sure autosync is disabled in iTunes on your computer, connect and right click on it in the device list, then choose "transfer purchases" to copy all bought media and apps from your ipod to your computer.
If the songs are not on your computer and got deleted from your ipod as well, you can't get them back, unless you have a backup of your iTunes library as part of your computer backup.

  • How can i delete the duplicate pictures and movie clips on my macbook pro

how can i delete all the duplicate pictures and movie clips on my macbook pro. it is telling me i have no memory

By 'no memory' may I assume you are out of space on your hard drive?
Obviously you can delete them one by one, but this is tedious and will take a long time and you wish to do this quickly and efficiently.
This is my suggestion and it may not be worth a lot:
If all of your duplicates have a unique characteristic common to them that the originals do not, this MIGHT work.  For example if you make a duplicate of an image, it will have the same title as the original, but will insert the word 'copy' in its' title.  (It should do some thing similar with movie clips).
Go to Spotlight in System Preferences.  Click on Privacy (near the top of the pane) and then the + sign (near the lower left hand corner).  This will result in a drop down menu.  Select all the places you do not want Spotlight to search.  You should leave only Music and Movies unless you have pictures/movie clips in other places.
Enter into spotlight the unique characteristic (ie; copy) and it should (I hope) list all your duplicates.  Perform a Select All, and put them in Trash.
Otherwise do them one by one or write an Apple Script Program.
If my convoluted idea does not work, perhaps you will be lucky and a more savvy person with a real solution will come forth!

  • DELETING AND RENAMING SONGS ON IPOD!!! HELP

I have been trying to Delete songs on my ipod. I plug in my ipod and delete the song i want to delete from the ipod list. However after i update the ipod, i check to see if the changes i made were successful, and nothing ever changes. Also, I am trying to group artists together. For example, I have Tom Petty as an artist on my ipod, and a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I would like to put all the songs under just "Tom Petty" though, how do i do this?

If you change the artist to just tom petty instead of tom petty and the heart breakers then they'll all be grouped together. Also if you want to make a smart playlist and say u want tom petty in it it won't discriminate againts the heartbreakers... unless you want it to that is. One other thing, when I delete songs and they don't come off the ipod when I plug it in, I change (under edit then preferences) automatically update my ipod instead of manually. I hope this helps.

  • Can't delete music on phone and the songs don't show up in iTunes

I've had this problem before and found no solution, so this time I'm going to ask and see if someone else has the same issue. It's not any of the usual problems, so I ended up restoring my phone to an earlier point and it worked, but I don't want to have to do it again.
Okay so the problem I have is there is music in my music app on my phone that doesn't show up in iTunes in the "on my device" section.  I listened to music on my phone that I had streamed from the cloud, when you do the "show all music" thing and can play all of your purchased songs.  Then when I turn off "show all music" there are random songs that I had streamed but didn't download.  I can't swipe left to delete them on my phone, and they don't show up in iTunes as even being on my phone.  I can't find a way to erase them.  I think they are stored in the "other" section of phone storage because now "other" is larger than it was.
The last time this happened I had to restore my iPhone to a point before this problem occurred and I lost my messages and new contacts and what not.  I have a feeling this is not a user fixable problem, but a problem on apple's end.  If anyone has any ideas please let me know.
    Thanks

You're welcome. If that method isn't quick enough you can always delete the whole conversation.

  • Duplicate texts, and multiple songs playing at once

This has happened a couple of times now. If I need to restart my phone for any reason, my phone resends old texts. I am not sure if my phone is defective or if there is maybe a setting I can change?
And now a new problem. I was trying to listen to music through bluetooth, in my car and it started playing 2 songs at the same time.

  • I bought a song on iTunes and my song don't play if I don't have WiFi... Is there a solution to make my song play normaly?

So I bought a song on iTunes... I click on it to make it play... First thing you know, The album photo is not there and I can't play the song if I dont have the internet

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Otherwise youwill have to delete and redownoad when wifi is available
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

I just sat there, and let it think. and i didnt touch anything.
after a while i decided to just shut it down. so i held the power button
and when I turn the computer back on, my itunes is restoring my library.
and then it says. itunes library (damaged)
but now im missing some songs,
    and all of my movies.
    all of my playlists.
    my downloaded songs...
and recent songs i uploaded from a cd.
    can i get them back?

Your Library got corrupted in the crash. The files are most likely still there.

  • I had an Ipod touvh given to me and need to delete the acct. name on it and rename the Ipod.  how do I do this

I have an Ipod touch that was given to me recently and I need to delete the acct. name and rename the device.
    How do I do this???

See the linked I provided in my first post above.  However, if you have already updated the device in iTunes it should do the same thing, erasing all content on the device and resetting all settings since you have connected to a new/different iTunes library from what it was originally set up with.
If after the restore, the same Apple ID is still showing up (the old one), head to Settings -> Store and sign out of that account and then sign in using your own Apple ID credentials.

Most all of my 1700 songs have been duplicated in iTunes. I have downloaded the instructions how to delete the duplicates but it says "sort by the date you added" and i have no column that says that. I am running windows xp.

Apple's official advice is here... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)

  • HT2905 I have lost all my play lists from my itumes library, and all of a sudden i have 2/3/4 duplicates of the same song. when i look at when they were added it says all added on 11th March 2013! i added most of them years ago. please help?!!

All my plat list have vanished, and all of my library has been duplicated and triplicated and some have 4 copies. i looked to try and delete the copied ones and tried to delete by putting on when they had been added. the date came up 11th march 2013 for ALL of the songs!. my library is at least 4 years old, and i constantly add songs. so why would it come up that date? and why have all my play list dissapeared?(I think also on that date)  please help?

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to a recent state.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any real-time scanning process.
Reverting to an earlier version of your library may clean up the duplicates issue along with restoring the original date added values. If you still have real duplicates I have a tool that might be able to help...

  • HT2905 Delete duplicate songs with exact same date

If all instances of given song have exact same date, will the procedure recommended in Support page "How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library" (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2905) delete all instances, or all but one instance?
If it would delete all instances, what should I do to delete all but one instance?

The View > Show Exact Duplicates feature lists all duplicate copies. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Or use my DeDuper script if you don't want to do it by hand. Please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping. See this thread for background.
