HT2905 Duplicate Songs

I can't find a way to display duplicate songs in the new version of Itunes.  Any ideas on how to delete duplicates easier than going through 1 by 1?

I would do it manually.  As you can see from turingtest2's post, some duplicates are not really duplicates.

  • HT2905 Duplicate songs from Google Play download

I use Google's Google Play and I made the mistake of Downloading my Library from the Google play Music Manager in my (early 2011) MacBook Pro's System Preferences after I already had my music library in iTunes so now I have a duplicate of every single song and not sure how to delete them. I tried using the the advice offered on here where I sort all music based on DATE but every song has the same date and about the same time so that won't work for me. Other then downloading a paid program I'm not sure what my options here are. That being said, let me know if anyone know what options other then paying for a program to do this for me or worse... having me click on every single duplicate song individually until I finish?
    Thank you

If you encoded your music in iTunes, it's probably encoded using AAC files rather than MP3. Google re-encodes all music into MP3 before it downloads your library. Right click in the sort columns of your iTunes music library and add "Kind" to the sort list. You will be able to see which ones are AAC, Purchased AAC, etc. and which ones are MPEG. Delete all the MPEG ones because those are from google.
This won't help much if your music was encoded using MP3 instead of AAC.
You can also run a file search using Finder on your iTunes music directory and just delete the files that were created by Google.

  • HT2905 Duplicate songs and syncing.

    Two questions:
    1)  I have the latest version of itunes and it has duplicated all my songs - 3500.  The only advice I can find is how to delete them one at a time, not feasible with 3500.  Does anyone know a solution to this?
    2)  Is there any chance that Apple will show any respect to its customers anytime soon?  I don't want to sync my iTunes, I want to choose which songs that I have paid for that I put on the iPhone that I have paid for from the Macbook that I have paid for.  Is there an alternative to iTunes, because the recent change to syncing is utterly terrible. My iPhone is so full of music that I can't take a single photo, because iTunes synced it.  I am unable to rectify this, I think because I have seleceted albums (I am not allowed to select songs because apparently that is forbidden in this new age) but those albums have been duplicated by iTunes, which means it simply says the new sync can't happen because there isn't enough space on the iPhone.  This despite the fact that the little bar at the bottom of the screen that shows the memory used is only about at half of the 16G memory.  Very bored with this now.

If your iPhone syncs with iTunes you need to tidy up in iTunes, then sync, not try to edit the content of the iPhone manually within iTunes.
I've written a script called DeDuper which can help remove unwanted duplicates. See this thread for background.
If the device has duplicates, but iTunes doesn't, then you can swipe and delete all duplicated items directly on the iPhone, then sync with iTunes to put the songs back onto the device. One of the iTunes build seem to have the potential to leave orphaned tracks on the device which are then not cleared up by further syncing.

I have duplicate albums but no duplicate songs.  One song showing in one album, the rest of the showing in a duplicate album.  Album, artist, genre all identical.  how can I get these albums to merge together into one album?

Change the album title to AlbumX, apply, then change back to Album. Repeat as necessary.

  • HT2905 How to remove duplicate songs from the iPhone when the duplicates are not listed in the iTunes library on the computer.

How can I remove duplicate songs from the iPhone4. The duplicates are not listed in the computer iTunes library.

The simplest thing may be to back-up and then restore the iPhone. If you don't fancy that then remove all media that is currently synced to it, then double check and manually remove any media that remains on the device, before reselecting your sync options.
If you've been manually managing the device and your library doesn't contain copies of all your media then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • HT2905 My itunes looks nothing like the examples in this tutorial.  I do not have "display exact duplicates" or "date added".  Can someone please help me remove duplicate songs?  Also, I downloaded two audio books and they are showing up in my song list.

My itunes looks nothing like the examples in this tutorial.  I do not have "display exact duplicates" or "date added".  Can someone please help me remove duplicate songs?  Also, I downloaded two audio books and they are showing up in my song list. Why???

'Show duplicates' is now under the 'View' menu. To see the 'Date added' column go to 'View options' from the 'View' menu and check it in the section under 'Stats'.
Click an audiobook once to select it and hit command-i (Mac) or control-i (Windows). Go to the 'Options' tab and set 'Media Kind' to 'Audiobook'.

  • HT2905 Is anyone having iTunes crash whenever they try to delete a (duplicate) song or playlist? If so, any workarounds?

Ever since I upgraded to Lion 10.7.4, I've been having a headache-of-a-time with applications unexpectedly quitting (especially Apple apps like Pages & Numbers and iTunes). Every time i try to delete a (duplicate) song (by any method, whether it's control-click, edit menu-delete, or command-delete, etc.) I get the spinning beach ball and then an expectedly quit "do you want to re-open?" window. Can anyone offer detailed advice how to downgrade iTunes to a pre-10.6 version? (where to find and download/install?), or is the problem probably OS-related, and I just have to wait it out until 10.8 becomes available?

Yes, the list on my computer of what is in my iPod library is grey, not black font. I tried "manual" but it will not allow me to drag anything to the iPod. Not even newly purchased music.
That certainly sounds like one of the Automatic syncing options has been engaged.
... quickly doublechecking, just in case. After selecting "Manually manage ..." in the device tab for the iPod in iTunes, did you click "Apply"?

  • HT2905 Deleting songs, duplicate songs, and renaming songs

On my iTunes I am unable to delete any songs from my iPhone, nor am I able to select the 'Display Duplicates' or Delete them either. I can't even rename a song!
Things I have tried for deleting songs:
    Shift+CTRL+Delete
    Delete button
Looking under settings on both my iPhone and iTunes for an option to enable the above problems in the opening
I have deleted the songs in both the downloads folder that my songs go to, and from the iTunes music (This deleted the songs from that but not my actual iPhone music).
Right Clicking the song and looking for delete option (no such option exists under the 'Devices' portion of iTunes)
Things I have tried for duplicate songs:
Right clicking the song and looking for delete option (again no such option exists)
Tried clicking the 'Display Duplicate' option but iTunes has it blocked and I am unable to click it (faded grey colour)
Things I have tried for renaming songs:
Right clicking the song>Get Info>Info and I can't click on anything it's all blocked
Double clicking song title still unable to edit the song like I used to be able to do in previous iTunes
    Triple clicking song title
Hoping someone can help me with these issues as this is very frustrating,
    KelseyP91.

  • How to remove duplicate songs from Itunes

I've consolidates my music in Itunes 11.01. Playlists are just getting crazy with duplicates.
I want to eliminate duplicate music files, as well as eliminate the references in the interface.
    Then sync my new IPad.
When I manually erase a duplicate in Windows Explorer, I'm left with a "!" indication in Itunes that the file cannot be found... duh.
I want to find either an easier way to eliminate duplicates without Windows Explorer, or
a way to select all the "!" references in Itunes interface and delete.
Help please from a completely organized person who hates Apples "intelligence" at thinking it knows what I want, and not providing
adequate help under "remove duplicates" in its help index.
    Thanks.

I would do it manually.  As you can see from turingtest2's post, some duplicates are not really duplicates.
I would also review how you add media to iTunes.  It should not be producing all that many duplicates.

I want to delete my duplicate songs, but I have thousands of songs and cannot realistically go through and review and delete them one at a time.  Can I do it all at once?

Apple's official advice is here... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)

  • Duplicate songs and sync fail

I tried syncing my iPod Classic and accidentally created duplicates of ALL my songs. I have hundreds of songs in my iTunes library. None of the new music I purchased successfully syncing and now my iPod Classic only has a small number of songs to listen to. How can I organize my iTunes library so it only displays a song once and most importantly, how can I sync my new purchased music successfully?

    Hello Shanette,
You may want to set up your iPod classic to manually manage the music.  That way, you can just drag the new songs to the iPod and also search for and delete duplicates.
This box would need to be checked if you are manually managing content over to your iPod:
You can find the full article here:
Managing content manually on iPhone, iPad, and iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1535
Once you have that enabled and your iPod selected, you can use iTunes' feature of showing duplicate items so that you can see them all at once and delete the duplicates that you want to remove:
Choose File > Display Duplicates to show duplicate items (matches are based on the song name and artist). If you have multiple versions of the same song (for example, live and studio versions, or versions from different albums) you can hold the Alt or Option key (for Mac OS X) or the Shift key (for Windows) and choose File > Display Exact Duplicates. This will show only duplicate songs having the same name, artist, and album.
If you are using iTunes 11 (the latest version of iTunes at this time), you will need to go to View>Show Duplicate Items (you can hold Alt or Option here as well to get the Show Exact Duplicate Items option).  You can find the full article here:
How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2905
This should help you identify the duplicates all at one time so that you can delete the extra versions of songs.  I hope this helps get you back on track!
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Sheila M.

The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.
