Hi,
I have to quickly download a movie from a friends Sony Handycam DCR-HC40 NTSC. Had hoped that it would be easy. But I cant figure out how to download the movie onto my Mac. I have iMovie HD and all the other iLive applications.
Gues I have to change some settings in the camera but can't figure it out.
It did recognise the USB stick with a picture on it. No problemo. But now the data I realy want from the Tape.
Please help.

Hello Roger,
first of all you'll need to replace the USB cable with a firewire cable - iMovie doesn't accept USB transfer.
In iMovie create a project (NTSC should be default for you but anyway the project will adapt to the camera's settings), then connect the camera and turn it on. iMovie should automatically switch to ablue screen and tell you "Camera connected". Now you can control the camera from within iMovie (play - rew - ff) and import.
If you want to capture single clips, check "make new clip at scenebreak" in your preferences before importing. In preferences you can also choose if you want the clips transferred to the clips pane or directly to the timeline.

I want to use Imovie on the ipad but the movies are on my iphone.
i transfered the movies to my desktop and with itunes put it on my ipad.
Now its there as a movie like a normal movie,
and nog in my filmroll.
How can i do this?

I to would love to know if anyone has found a way to do this.... I purchased several bluray dads, and normally the software gives you the option to use the "ultraviolet" streaming and/or download a copy to iTunes, but these all seem to be Flixter or nothing. I contacted the folks at "UV," "Flixter" and Warner Bros as well, and they all told me "tough luck" on my request to get iTunes versions. Flixter even went so far as to tell me, "...we cannot provide digital copies in every media format for certain films for a variety of logistical reasons." which is total BS, and they know it.
The problem I have is that SOME of these bluray DVDs offer the option of iTunes and other do not, but this is NOT specifically identified on the package -- you really don't have any way of knowing until you open the package and attempt the download. Some will offer you the choice, others will not, but the package, in my experience, never says, 'This will NOT work with iTunes."
This really should be the foundation for a class-action lawsuit against the studios who do this BS "bait and switch" to try to force you to use a less then desirable format or poor quality 'streaming' service. I realize the studios want to make more $$ and that means screwing over Apple/iTunes and by default the consumer, by forcing a shoddy product they make more profit on.... No different than an electronics store pushing you to purchase 'brandX' because it has a higher profit margin for them... except that YOU HAVE THE CHOICE.
Apple could make a killing by accepting their codes for discounts on the iTunes versions... say half-price... just a thought.
But seriously, to all those out there, this really should be put into a class action suit..... I would be on-board.

If these are personal movies and you have the original files (that you created the DVDs from), use those instead. Converting to DVD then back reduces quality.
And as Skydiver119 noted, it is illegal to break the encryption on commercial DVDs, even if you own the DVD.

Looks like it records in AVI format at 25 fps. I think that should import to iMovie OK - if not it should import to iPhoto and then be available in the iMovie Events Library under "iPhoto Videos". Importing shouldn't be a problem based on this extract from the web page:
"The glasses can be hooked directly to a PC with the supplied USB cable to view the video, or when using the Micro SD card, it can be inserted into a card reader to watch footage."

hi, if your movies are recorded in AVCHD formats, they are not supported by iMovie so far. So, to make the conversion seems to be the best choice now. Except the brorsoft suggested by emmalucky, Video Mate also fits your mac well. IMovie accepted video formats includs .DV, .MOV, .MPEG-4, .M4V、H.264, .AIC. A really stupid question, and possibly this has been asked before, but I am at my wits end--is there a way I can import video clips to iMovie from a DVD disc that contains video files? When I try to select 'import movies' from the file menu, it won't import the clips because the video files contained within the dvd are VOB. IFO. and BUP. formats, and the iMovie will only read MPEG or mov. Is there a way I can somehow import these clips by changing the setting somewhere in the iMovie or am I to require some other type of application to convert these files before I can successfully import them?
I'm really only trying to make a simple short clip, nothing big. The longest it will probably be is at most 5 mins. Any suggestions?

Not by changing a setting. Multiplexed MPEG-2 content is not iMovie '08 "edit" compatible. Either the content is recognized as being on a compatible camcorder and converts the content to an "edit" compatible compression format or you must manually convert the multiplexed MPEG-2 content yourself for import at the "Finder" file level.

If your VOB files are not encrypted (i.e., on a homemade DVD), then they can be copied to your hard drive. Once on your hard drive, you can use any of several applications to perform your conversion. Cost and work flow depend on the application you use. I normally recommend a new user try something like iSquint for their initial attempt. It is free and simple to use. Simply drop the copied VOB file containing the video you want to the application work area, set the "Optimize for TV" option, and press the "Start" button. This will produce an MPEG4/AAC file that can be edited. Other applications can produce alternative compression formats for editing but are either more difficult to use or are not totally free. My preference would by MPEG Streamclip here, but it requires a $20 QT MPEG-2 Playback component and s much more difficult to use since it has many more options and capabilities. Visual Hub (iSquint's "big brother") is as simple to use, but is a "pay-ware" application. In any case, the free application should allow you to do what you want and then you can decide if you need/want to invest more in the way of cost, time, and/or effort in a better application.

Unfortunately, QT Pro will not work in this case since QT Pro is not conversion compatible with multiplexed MPEG-2 formats. Even if you add the $20 QT MPEG-2 Playback component, it will only convert the video portion of the file. Use an MPEG-based, third-party application like those mentioned above or FFmpegX (donation-ware/difficult to use) or MPEG2 Works (Pay-ware that also requires the $20 MPEG-2 component, etc.

You'll need to Import them into iTunes, and sync them through there if they aren't in itunes already.
Yoiu may need to convert them to a playable format for the iPad. If its a video format itunes support, you ncan make playable versions for iPad from within iPad.
Alternatively if you find a Video App such as Moli Player you can import them into the App through iTunes File sharing as well without having to change their format. Moli player is capable of playing many types of videos and audio formats.

How to get movies from laptop to ipad mini

I have roughly 100GB of movies (mostly AVIs) on my laptop. They are not purchased via itunes. I am getting an ipad mini 16GB. How can i best deal with movie transfers so i can watch movies on the ipad mini. I know there is little storage on the mini, and i know i will probably have to convert to mp4s, but can i use an alternative storage that would both store movies and enable me to watch them on the mini??

You can't import movies from DVD directly into iTunes like you can with a CD. The process is much more complex and will require the use of third party software.
You'll first need decrypting software to remove the encryption on the DVD.
Then you'll need conversion software to convert the decrypted files into an iPod friendly format.
Sometimes, both of those tasks can be accomplished with one piece of software. (Before anyone mentions it Videora iPod Converter is NOT an all-in-one package. It does NOT decrypt DVDs.)
PQ DVD seems to be popular for Windows users, as well as ImTOO.
