HT2954 Mail inbox created but no file folders

Can anybody help me?

WARNING
Having thought I'd got this sorted I now have a big problem.
By using the IMAP settings on Yahoo website for 'mobile devices' I did manage to sync all mail folder with MBP.  However, following this, on Monday I then noticed that I only had 50 emails in my Inbox out of over 5000.  I checked my Yahoo account via web and the inbox there also only had the last 50 emails.  Over 3 years worth of emails had somehow been deleted!  Disaster. I had only just bought MBP and new backup disk had not then arrived so I had no local backup.
I contacted Yahoo on Tuesday morning and they instigated their recovery procedure.  No joy.  They also insisted that they only support POP for mail clients and not IMAP.  Obviously they do support IMAP for phones and as my iPhone pulls down 50 emails at a time I guess what I have done was to use settings only intended for phones and this has somehow caused the rest of my Inbox to get wiped at Yahoo.  Interestingly I do still have full Sent Items and Drafts folders. Yahoo rep was not very helpful and was unable to confirm exactly what had happened.
I do not hold out any hope now but as, prior to deleting the emails, I did at one point download all of them onto MBP Mail before subsequently deleting them, I thought it might be worth trying to run Data Recovery 3 to see if it finds anything on the MBP.  If anyone has any other ideas please let me know.
So - to anyone reading this thread and looking to fully sync Yahoo Mail - you can't.  It is only a POP account and will sync Inbox only.
Do not apply their IMAP mobile device settings or you will lose your emails.

  • 'mail event' creates empty calendar file

I can send ical events by adding invitees, but when I use the control-click 'mail event' method, the ics that gets attached to the mail is empty (when you try to add it to ical it errors with 'This calendar file is empty. No new new events have been added to your ical calendars'. This has worked previously, and works on other macs, no problem.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I'm having this problem too, and I have all the latest updates installed. Not sure where to go next.
    Any ideas?

  • 8dot3 filenames not created for Program Files and Program Files (x86)

Interesting issue we are realizing on Servers deployed from SCCM 2012. 8dot3names are not created for Program Files and Program Files (x86). they are created for other files/folders at the root of C and below Program Files and Program Files (x86). This is
causing issues when programs are installed and the path is then created with 8dot3 filenames for program files and program files (x86)

Arg. we just got bitten by this "feature", and it's affecting our security software stack (name starts with M and ends with ee), and some ancient crud too.
And found this, which suggests a logical reason for 8dot3name to not be present on servers, but, on clients, I think it's a rather gross assumption...

  • How Do I Hide Program Acessible Files/Folders?

Hi, lots of times when I install programs, it places useless files and folders in my most frequently used locations (e.g. Documents). This has resulted in loads of clutter and frustration. I have used programs such as Apimac's 'Secret Folder' and Altmomac's 'Hide Folders' but once files/folders are hidden they cannot be accessed by their associated programs thus inhibiting their functioning.
Is there anything I can do to hide these files/folders while allowing them to be program acessible. Thanks alot.

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and run the following:
    tell application "System Events"
set visible of (choose folder with invisibles) to false
    end tell
The folder targeted will then disappear from the Finder; the change may not be recognized until the Finder is relaunched, which can be done by pressing the Control and Option keys while clicking on its Dock icon and choosing Relaunch. Folder can be replaced by file if needed. Your account needs to be the owner of the file or folder in question.

  • Inbox folders not being created from msf files

Last week, I noticed that my Inbox folder files weren't appearing in my profile. I posted a generalized question here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/996903
The response I received didn't help that much. The folder I created appeared on the remote mailbox as empty folders.
My mail account is synced via IMAP to a remote Zimbra mail client using STARTTLS. I can view my Inbox. The other folders in my Inbox account are not visible. I can send and recieve messages from my INBOX.
When I select "Manage folder Subscriptions" In the account options, I can see the folders. When I select them, and click the "Subscribe" button, nothing happens.
Inspecting my IMAP directory, I see the following structure:
    ~/.thunderbird/13zr0oo0.default/ImapMail/mail.<zimbra_account>.com:
    -rw-r--r-- 1 matthewe matthewe 1238 May 2 10:38 Archives.msf
    -rw-r--r-- 1 matthewe matthewe 1235 May 2 10:38 Drafts.msf
    -rw------- 1 matthewe matthewe 47500385 May 2 09:56 INBOX
    -rw-r--r-- 1 matthewe matthewe 375885 May 2 10:36 INBOX.msf
    -rw-r--r-- 1 matthewe matthewe 25 May 2 08:58 msgFilterRules.dat
    -rw-r--r-- 1 matthewe matthewe 1233 May 2 10:38 Sent.msf

    -rw-r--r-- 1 matthewe matthewe 2275 May 2 10:33 Trash.msf
The msf files are created when I click the "Subscribe" button but subsequent Mail files containing the mail data are not (note that non-msf files exist only for "INBOX".)
Removing .msf files and restarting Thunderbird has no affect.
When I launch, the errors console reports the following three errors:

This is reported as https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=883621 and has been resolved at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=895964 but my system still throws the error. (I have plenty of disk space. Permissions perhaps?)

Is your question about files not being created, or because you cannot send and receive mail, or both?

  • The file folders I created in my Inbox have disapeared, how can I retrieve these emails?

I'm a new user of thunderbird. I used to label my emails, but was finding it hard to find them again, so I decided to create file folders in my inbox, I created 4 and now I only have 1 of those. Now I can't find those emails, and even searching for the labels, I can't find them in my inbox. Can I retreive those emails?
    Thanks!!

Thanks for the information. Is there any way to undo what I did and be able to see the mails that were in those folders in my inbox? Also, in the link I didn't see how to create these other folders you mention. If I try to crate a folder it asks me if I want them in the inbox or local folders.
    thanks again.

  • How do you create a rule to forward/redirect emails to another account (eg: gmail) BUT, I DO NOT want emails to then appear in Mac Mail inbox?

I cannot close down my primary email account as it's attached to my current modem.
So it will have to remain open BUT I don't any emails going to this address.
I have created a gmail account and want any emails redirected to this account but wanted to ensure they don't also appear in the original Mac Mail Inbox.
    Any suggestions?

Changing the password as you describe only changes the password that your Mac sends to the mail server(s), not the password that the mail server(s) expect(s).
If the email account is "attached to [your] modem," it is supplied by your ISP (Internet Service Provider), and you must change the expected password through your ISP. Depending on your ISP, this may involve calling them on the phone, visiting a web site, or even using a special app. It may also require proof of your right to administer your email account.
After you have changed what your ISP's mail server(s) expect(s), you will need to change the password(s) your system sends in Account Information (for receiving) and Edit SMTP server list (for sending).

only my hotmail inbox appears in Mail.  How do I get my file folders to come over?

It sounds as though you have set Mail up in POP mode. POP only sees and downloads from the server Inbox.
To see or download any other server folders you need to set it up in IMAP mode.
    Good luck.

  • Mail keeps creating inboxes

I use Apple Mail on both my MacBook and iPhone to sync with my IMAP account and have recently acquired a problem:
Although I don't use the To Do function in Mail, Mail has been creating an Apple Mail To Do folder in my iPhone/MacBook folder list. At first this was at the top level of the hierarchy, same as my other mail folders. I deleted it when first noticed and have attempted to delete again since (perhaps foolishly), and now Mail keeps creating new copies of the "Apple Mail To Do" folder, only… each time it is nested inside two, three, four, five(!) "Inbox" folders.
    Looks like this:
    - INBOX
    - ....INBOX
    - ........INBOX
    - ............INBOX
    - ................INBOX
    - .....................Apple Mail To Do
This set of folders sits in alpha order within my main list of folders, it's separate from the real Inbox that sits at the top of my folder list.
When I attempt to delete all six folders I get a message saying that the various INBOXES don't exist. When I delete just the To Do folder, the INBOX folders are deleted as well. (Until the whole thing is recreated!)
Incidentally, my IMAP Path Prefix in Mail.app's preferences is set to: INBOX
So I suspect if I were to change that to blank, then the nesting would (maybe?) stop.
All the same, can anyone explain this behaviour (it's fairly recent, following a decent period where I wasn't plagued by To Do folders at all)? Why would it be nesting multiple "INBOX" folders, rather than just one?
What can I do to get the To Do folder to stay away?

This solution does not delete the AppleMail Todo mailbox but provides a workaround that keeps those annoying subfolders out of your inbox and prevents them from "breeding."
(Note: In my case this issue began only after I started using an iPhone. I am using a 3rd party IMAP server provided by Network Solutions WITHOUT SSL. I cannot say the following is a universal workaround.)
The wage-donkey I spoke to at Apple Tech support- "Tier 2" no less - INSISTED this is not a problem caused by mail.app, but rather it was a server-side issue. He said the folder in question MUST exist on the server and is being pushed to the mac every time the IMAP mailbox is created in mail app. Rather than attempting to trouble-shoot the issue, he adamantly argued his point until I hung up.
You can attempt to prove his point for him by trying the following:
    1) Log on your mail server via web browser and delete the offending folders.
    2) move ~/Library/Mail and ~/Library/Preferences/apple.mail.plist to the trash.
    3) Disconnect computer from the internet.
    4) Set-up IMAP account manually.
    5) Relaunch mail.app.
The application will request permission to create an Apple Mail ToDo folder in the newly created Inbox.
(It would seem Mail.app is designed to automatically create the ToDo mailbox and place it on the server, which it cannot do without an internet connection. One would assume a "Tier 2" Apple Support technician would know this. He didn't.)
    6) Hit cancel to deny Mail.app's request.
The server-side folders that should normally appear in a mailbox OUTSIDE of your inbox should now all be contained WITHIN the mailbox. This should include a Gray folder called "ToDo" with a subfolder mbox (youraccountname)
    7) Quit mail.app
    8) Restore your internet connection.
    9) Relaunch mail.app. It will make the same request as step 5. Click ALLOW.
Mail.app should move all of the folders from your inbox to a server-side subfolder containing the Gray ToDo folder and the subfolder "mbox (youraccountname)."
DO NOT delete this folder. You can open it without consequence. You should no longer have the issue of subfolders breeding in your inbox every time you reboot.
To further test the mai.app-side/server-side argument, I deleted the entire mailbox from the server and created a new one before trying the above steps. Same issue. The folder in question is almost certainly created by mail.app and not residing on the server. Though I cannot isolate the cause, I'm confident it lies somewhere in the combination of SSL settings, iPhone integration and mail.app.
In my experience, Mac Tech Support has not helped solve a real problem since OS 9. In one instance a mac "genius" suggested my mother wipe her drive and reinstall the OS to solve her airport problem. It turns out all he had to do was turn off Interference Robustness in her airport settings. User message boards know more collectively than any Tech Support Associate I have ever encountered. Apple doesn't want to take your call so take the hint and stop calling.

  • When using Time Machine in Mac Mail, everything works fine but restored files do not appear in MM - On My Mac, and I cannot find them anywhere.  Thanks

Time Machine Problem: Mac Mail.  Cannot Find Restored Files in Mac Sidebar where they are supposed to go.
I am using Mountain Lion on my MacBook.  I have successfully used Time Machine in the past, but I have incurred the following problem that I am requesting help on.
I am attempting to recover Sent  and Inbox Mac Mail sent.  I go through all the steps properly and locating what I want to recover, and after hitting Restore everything seems to be working and I get a message "Restoring 207 files".  The guides say that then I am supposed to find the files in Mac Mail sidebar under   ON MY MAC.  But they are not there nor anywhere else I have looked.  In other words, everything appears to be working fine except I cannot find the restored files.
    Thank you for you help.
    Jerry

Although you can restore messages from a Time Machine snapshot within the Mail application, it generally won't work with messages that were saved by an older version of Mail. In that case, you have to use an alternative method.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a folder selected. Inside that folder are subfolders representing your Mail accounts. The names refer to the email addresses you use. Decide which ones you want to restore messages from.
Enter Time Machine and scroll back to the snapshot you want. Select the account folders you want and then selectRestore ... to... from the action menu (gear icon) in the toolbar of the snapshot window. Restore the folders to the Desktop, not to their original location.
From the Mail menu bar, select
    File ▹ Import Mailboxes...
Import from the mailboxes in the folders you restored to the Desktop. The imported messages will appear in a new mailbox. Move the ones you want to keep wherever you like and delete the rest. Then delete the folders on the Desktop.

  • Files/folders created in Windows share are read-only... why and how to fix?

    Client: MacBook Pro running 10.7.5
    Server: Windows 7 desktop
I'm sharing a folder from the Windows 7 machine and mounting it on my Mac using Finder's "Connect to Server..." and an smb:// URI. I'm providing a user ID/password for an account on the Windows 7 box that has full control over the shared folder, via smb://userid:password@server/share.
The volume mounts properly on my desktop, can I can see files/folders there as expected. However:
If I create a folder, it's read-only. I cannot create any files inside (or even see inside), rename the folder, or delete the folder. The folder has a badge: red circle with bar.
If I create a file, it's read-only. I cannot rename it, delete it or edit it.
If I examine File Info via Finder on any of these files or folders, under Sharing & Permissions it says "You have custom access."
If I try to delete these files/folders, I get error code -8072. I can delete them from the command-line, but I can't otherwise manipulate them.
I've verified on the Windows box that the user ID I'm using has full control of the folder. I've also set it so Everyone has full control, with no difference.
This seems to have been a recent change in behaviour (a few weeks ago I was copying data to this drive, no problem), and it's driving me crazy because I can't figure out how to fix it.

    L145:
It is always good counsel to Repair Disk Permissions (from the internal HDD) before and after any new installation.
To change permissions in our Applications Folder:
    Select Applications Folder.
    Get Info (Command + i)
Go down to Ownership & Permissions
Click on arrow next to Details to expand.
    Click on lock and authenticate
    Owner is system
    Group is admin
Change all permissions to Read & Write except Others
    Other can Read only.
Please do not hesitate to post back should you have any further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • How do you drag and drop/move multiple emails from the inbox or mail archive folder to a file folder in your finder?

I would like to archive hundreds of my emails that currently exist in my apple mail email filing system by moving them into file folders in the finder. I can do this easily with a single email but it wont let me do it with multiple emails or a complete folder. Is there any way of do this easily?

Thanks very much for this. However, I understand how dragging and dropping files normally works. It just seems the it wont work when you do it with emails when you are transfering them into a normal finder system folder. If you highlight one file and drag it to a finder folder it works, but when you drag multiple, it just wont let you do it.
Is there any work around for this? Thank you once again for  your time.

  • Change "Date Created" on File Folders

What is the easiest way to change or alter the "Date Created" on file folders - To a date that is 6 months older? (OS 9.1)
I need to store my photos in a single large chronologically ordered file. Some of them are sourced from scanned photos and some are received in emails from folks.
I want to store them in the same date order as the day the photos were taken and NOT the day I filed them.
    Thanks.........Robert

    Neil and Don,
I figured out a way to allow me to change the "Date Created" to any date I desired.
    1. Open "Date & Time" file in "Control Panels".
    2. Set the date desired (i.e. 6 months earlier.)
    3. Then Close "Date & Time"
    4. Now in (finder) click on "Command + N",
This creates an "untitled file folder" on the desktop
with the newly selected "Date Created".
    5. Give the new file folder the name desired.
    6. Drag the desired files to the newly created file folder
    and drop them.
    7. Trash the OLD Date Created Folder.
    8. Remember to go back to "Date Created" in "Control
Panels" and change back to the current date.
The above took care of my original question; But, I decided to use the same technique to change the "FILE" date created,
    rather than the "FILE FOLDER".
I opened my digital camera software and took a ".jpg" photo file and did a "Save As" while "Date & Time" were in the altered state. My .jpg photo file now has the new "Date Created".
I know that Niel and Don are completely aware of such a technique, But, I figured other forum members may find this method useful.
Thanks for all of your continuing help........Robert

  • I have a new ipad and want to create files for my documents I brought over from my Mac. How do I create file folders?

I would like to create file folders for my documents I brought over to my ipad from my desktop Mac. I downloaded pages and neu.annotate. My files synced without a problem. PDF articles I put in neu.annotate and pages documents into pages but I would like to organize into folders like on my desktop. How can I do this on the ipad3?

Unlike a 'normal' computer the iPad doesn't have a file system and everything on it has to be stored/associated within an app, you can't have separate folders of documents/files on your iPad's homescreens. If the apps that you have support it then you could possibly use Dropbox to store your documents within a folder structure, but you'd then need internet access in order to access them.
