  • HT2963 How can I fix permissions problems now that I have changed permission on my HD and have error code -8076, locked disk or ....?

iMac v10.7.4. Error message says disk is locked. Permissions set for read/write admin (me). Can't open iTunes, Mail, photoshop, adobe bridge [you do not have permission!]. Fonts in Word are unexpected, not cambria. Used Disk utility to repair permissions (ran it twice, once before reinstalling photoshop from DVD; once today). Situation worsening.

Permissions problems occurred after I downloaded Lion update on 6092012. I believe the  problem originates with  Lion (see the 19 pages of posted problems in the community). I have now talked with Apple Support rep and an Apple Genius. Have reinstalled Lion from the HD Recovery disk. I see some improvement but also at least one  new problem: TimeMachine apparently has lost all backups, don't know how or why. Will have to take machine to a mac specialist or wait for Mountain Lion to arrive. Lion is a bad cat.

  • HT2963 Can't set JPGs to open in Photoshop not Preview- forum suggested this is Permissions issue

I've repeatedly used "Open with" > "Other" > "Adobe Photoshop CS4" > "Always Open With" and it works only with that particular JPG. In a Photoshop forum, someone suggested this is a Permissions issue. Is it? If so, how do I fix it? (I have no UNIX-type experience. This is Mavericks OS X 10.9.2.) Thanks to anyone who can help!

Control (right) - click on the file and select Get Info from the contextual menu:
In the Info window select Photoshop as the app to open it with and click on the Change All button.

  • HT2963 Warning: SUID file ------will not be repaired.

    Hi:
When trouble shooting some difficulties in a game I was directed to run
Disk Utility Program ---Disk Utilities Repair Disk Permissions
I ran the program and got this Warning.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Should I be concerned? Will it cause difficulties? Have I been hacked?

That's a permission you can ignore, so don't worry about that > http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1448

  • HT2963 File sharing between users

    What is the "Wheel" user?
Does this user need to have RW access to a file in order for that file to be shared between users on the same MAC?
I set the file permissions to RW for each user but they remained read only for all users except the user who created the file.
Then I change the "Wheel" permission to read write and then the file became write enabled for the other users.
In the same direction ... what is the point of having a drop box if you can only write files to it but it is not possible to read any files from it.

Finder > help menu. Enter file sharing!
"Sharing files with others who use your computer
You can share files with others who use your computer by placing the files in the Public folder in your home folder. Anyone with an account on your computer can read or copy the items you put in your Public folder (except for your Drop Box folder, which only you can open).
To share files using your Public folder:
Copy the files you want to share into your Public folder, inside your home folder.
To give a copy of a file directly to another person, copy it to their Drop Box folder (inside their Public folder), where only they can see it.

  • HT2963 Catastrophic permission issues ....

I have done a foolish thing - I was having issues with permissions with OS 10.7.5, so I decided to make them all read/write for all documents on my hard drive (using the get info dialogue) - Big mistake - now I cannot use any software or documents and the disk utility software cannot help... e.g. - I ty to activate iTunes and I get "The folder iTunes is on a locked disk or you do nt have write permissions for this folder" -  In effect, I have lost my computer.... HELP?

Okay - a bit of self help...  This is what I have done in my struggle to correct - the reason I reset the permissions in the first place is, rather than having to modify the permissions of each file individually, this command simultaneously changes the permissions of all the items in the selected folder—to match the settings listed the Sharing & Permissions section of the folder’s Get Info window. Assuming the folder has the desired permissions settings, this command can quickly remedy your problem. For starters, the command doesn’t actually change the ownership of files, just their read and write permissions. This means that, if you were not the owner of the file before using the command, you still won’t own it after afterwards—even if you are the owner of the enclosing folder. The miracle is that having done it for the hard drive, that it didn't shut down my systems folder.
Disk utility, which then kicks up a huge list of errors, which we are urged by Apple to ignore because there's nothing we can do about it so don't worry (yeah)...
So in despair, I reloaded the OSX using the ctr-r command - it successfully rebooted but failed to change any of the settings.
I tried fixing folders individually - don't - it ignores you - however, when I went in to iPhoto - the package recognises the problem and offeres a fix for the folder in question - and succeeds (for that particualr library - I have 4 and they were all fixed by the script that iPhoto is using - so there is a fix out there, it's just I can't find it (and it isn't in the disk utility)
In despair, I went to root and entered sudo chmod -RN ~ in Terminal and rebooted ctr-r again and used the disk utility in the reboot - it did it's job and this time with no error returns!  Sadly, it made no difference - but I reloaded the operating system again - zilch - back to square one.
I think I have done enough self-help damage...
At least now I know there is a fix out there (a script imbedded in iPhoto) - the question is, what next?  Do I go out and buy 10.8?  Apparently the issue has been with us since 10.4 - so why would 10.8 be any different?  Pease someone - I want my Apple back :-(

  • HT2963 I have a 1 TG external drive that is formatted to Windows NTFS and is read only, how do i get it to read and write on my Mac OS X 10.6.3?

I I have a 1 TG external drive that is formatted to Windows NTFS and is read only, how do i get it to read and write on my Mac OS X 10.6.3?

Install software such as Paragon NTFS, or reformat it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32. Mac OS X 10.6.5 and newer can also read and write exFAT partitions.

  • HT2963 When I repair permissions, get one reading that can't be repaired.  "Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired."  What does this mean?

When I repair permissions in disk untilities, I get one result that cannot be repaired:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I recently had a new hard drive installed by Apple, after mine failed.  The permissions seem to get out of whack quite often, and I get the message above.
Can you please tell me what may be going on?

  • HT2963 The folder "Documents" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents.

After running Apple Migration software from Win 7 to Mtn. Lion, the folders (now on the Mac in the "brokerbrian" users folder) have a red-dash-icon and upon attempting to open them, message box pops up stating: The folder “Documents” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.  Any suggestions or encouragement?

When you setup the Mac, you created a Admin user account with say name X
You ran Migration Assistant and it migrated user Y from the Windows machine.
User Y has different permissions than User X.
User X can't normally access User Y's account.
So what you do is log out of User X via the Apple menu and into User Y, this way you have permission to access the files.
If you want to transfer files from User Y to User X account
Transfer files between user accounts on the same machine instructions
Finder > Go menu > Computer
A window appears with your boot drive, double click on it to open
Inside is Users folder, double click to open it
Inside is your User accounts, double click on the one you want to send files too
Double click on the Public folder drop the files into the DropBox folder,
The permissions will change and can be used in the other user account when you log into it and moved to the appropriate folders.
Applications are typically installed and kept in the Applications folder which is a global access folder all users can access to run them from, but not all users can modify unless they are a Admin user.
Windows programs won't run on a Mac, but they can be instaled into a virtual machine program that is running Windows.

  • HT2963 why does OSX 10.9 decline permission to run software that is says comes from "an unknown source"?

See the heading "How to open an app from a unidentified developer" on this support page. The instructions apply to installer packages and other installable items as well as applications.

  • HT2963 What is msvcr80.dll?

I was not able to upgrade itunes, I keep getting a response that says I need to install MSVCR80.dll. I am not sure and don't have a clue as to what to do.

Click here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.

  • HT2963 Just jumped from OX 10.6.8 to OX 10.8.3. My AppleWorks & MS Office Suite are now kaput.  How do I salvage my existing documents?

Just jumpled from OX 10.6.8 ti IX 10.8.3, May AppleWorks & MS Office Suite are kaput now.  How do I salvage my AppleWorks files?

As you have discovered, you can't run PPC programs such as AppleWorks on Mountain Lion. I assume your Mac previously had 10.6.8 on it: if so you can deal with this by buying an external hard disk and installing Snow Leopard on it from your install disks. Then you can start up from it and run AppleWorks.
Alternatively, success has been reported in running Snow Leopard under emulation in Parallels - the method is described here: it seems complex; however Snow Leopard Server is available in the Apple Store (by telephone) at a reduced price (the last time I checked) and this makes the process a lot easier. I haven't tried either method: use at your own discretion. You can then run AppleWorks as an emergency measure.
However depending on the file types you can open certain of them in programs which will run on Mountain Lion:
Word Processing documents can be opened directly only in Pages (AppleWorks 6 only).
Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store, and you will need v4.0 'Retro' not the most recent version) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings).
Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in Numbers.
Presentations can be opened directly only in Keynote.
Unfortunately nothing whatever will open Databases or Paint documents.
