HT3209 Movie rental that won't play?!

Irented a movie from the iTunes store and it said it was ready to watch even though it hasn't completely downloaded and this is usually not a problem. But it won't play. If I move the button on the time ie to 10 minutes into the movie it shows the content is there, but it just wont play. Ive tried restarting my computer and re connecting to my wifi and force quitting the program but nothing seems to work!

If you used AppleTV while it was bufering say to browse movies/trailers or anything else it will often clear the dwonload to use the memory for other things - not good if on a slow connection.
Your options are:
1 - Reduce quality of rental to SD in iTunes store section of Settings.
SD needs 2.5 Mbps for near instant playback, 720p HD 6 Mbps and 1080p 8Mbps.
2 - Rent in iTunes on a computer then with iTunes running on the same newtork play the rental under the Computers icon where your Home Shared iTunes library appears - a rental category appears when a rental has fully downoaded.  iTunes keeps a download for up to 30 days or until the view period has ended once you start to play.
3 - faster internet - probably not possible
4 - rent on an iPAd or iPhone and Airplay to AppleTV
The 24/48 hour view period only starts ticking when you actually view the film - you may be ok, but if not contact iTunes Store support and explain the problem/request a refund and try again.

    hi
download perian from internet, it'll solve your issue.

  • I have a .mov file that won't play in Quicktime - do I need to download a decoder?

Found out via Movie Inspector that these .mov files have DVC Pro HD Codec - which I believe has to do with Avid Editing software? Anyhow, I need to find out what I need to download in able to see these video files?  Do I have to purchase a decoder of some kind?  Hopefully not?  Is there any other way to view these files on my imac?  I am running OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.5 and have both Quicktime 10 and 7 installed.  Thanks for any help/advice!

Would you suggest I put them through something like Toast and try to convert it to an .mp4 or .mov file again?
Right idea—wrong application. You still need to be able to acces the a "pro" set of codec components. Basically you can purchase and install FCP X ($299.99), Motion 5 ($49.99), or Compressor 4 ($49.99) to gain access to the ProApps QT Codecs package. Once you install any of these apps, you can run the Software Update utility to download and install the "Pro" codecs package as described in SUPPORT ARTICLE HT4714. Once the codecs are installed as part of your system's QT codec component configuration, they will be available to all media apps that can access your system's codec configuration—e.g., QT 7, QT 7 Pro, QT X, iMovie, GarageBand, MPEG Streamclip, etc. Since you mentioned clients, I assume you are providing a profesional service and might find $50 a fair investment for access to the entire ProApps QT codecs package which also includes other professional editing codec families. In any case, this workflow does provide a low-cost, easy way to leagally install the "pro" codecs on your system(s).
    P.S.
You can read DOWNLOAD ARTICLE DL1396 to see which "pro" codec families are included in the ProApps QT codecs package. This may help you better evaluate whether or not you wish to go this route.

+I've tried some suggestions online, but most suggest that the problem is with available media--I don't think that's my problem. Any suggestions?+
    You don't have enough media.
Move your IN point a few seconds into the clip, and then drop it into the timeline.
    Now apply dissolve

  • Here's a fix for uploaded files that won't play.

Is this you?  You've found a lot of files were uploaded, instead of matched.  Some of those files might even be on albums where other tracks matched. Sure you want them ALL to match, but meantime, it would be nice if uploaded files would actually play!  Sure, you can see their names, track durations, etc. but if you try to play them directly, nothing happens and if you try to play an album through, when it gets to an uploaded track, it stalls or skips past it.  You've checked the file type and it's an AAC so you figure it can't be a file encoding incompatibility problem and besides, whatever the file type, Apple is red-flagging anything incompatible, tells you it's ineligible, right?
Guess Again - not all AAC files are produced with the same encoder and some of them, while they'll get past Apple's eligibile/ineligible screening process, probably shouldn't.
I routinely record vinyl using Audacity and at various times I've used different encoders (not that I knew it until now).  As a result of checking which uploaded files play and which do not, I'm pretty confident of the following. While some AAC files created outside of iTunes might work, those encoded using Lavf52.36.0 will not.  Neither will files encoded using Lavf52.64.2.  There may be others.
So what's the fix?  The same one recommended for getting files flagged by Apple as ineligible to pass muster.  You need to make an AAC copy in iTunes and swap that for the uploaded files that won't play.
Here are the steps I use to get it done. You may be able to streamline the process though.
    (1) Turn off wi-fi to prevent iTunes Match from attempting to match any new files until you're good and ready.  If you don't to this, you may end up with files you've just created being flagged as duplicates.
    (2) Select all files in an album that has some bad uploaded files. Select Advanced > Create AAC Version.  (NOTE: I don't bother trying to separate uploaded from matched, just too much hassle.)
    (3) Select one of the files, so you can File > Reveal In Finder. Generally this will get you to the album folder that includes both sets of tracks.  The ones you just created will have a "1" in the file name.
    (4) Create a folder on the desktop and move all the newly created files to it.  Delete the "1" from the file names.  Name the folder based on album title.
    (5) In iTunes, delete the listings for the newly created files.
    (6) Turn on wi-fi and wait for iCloud to reconnect.  Watch the cloud icon - it'll tell you.
    (7) Delete the album from iTunes (You're now getting rid of the copy that was originally uploaded, so be sure you've really got the new AAC files handy to replace them with).  Note you will see an option to delete from iCloud too.  Check it.  You want these files GONE!
    (8) Select Store > Update iTunes Match. If you do a search for the album from an iCloud enabled iOS device (I use Apple TV) after the update is completed, you shouldn't be able to find the album.
    (9) Select File > Add To Library and go get the folder of tunes you created.
    (10) Run Update iTunes Match again.
    (11) Watch the iTunes progress bar. Once the matching process has checked to see if you've added anything to your library, you'll see fresh copies of your songs uploading.
    (12) As another means of confirmation, once several of the songs have uploaded, do an iOS device search for the album. You should  be able to get the album to appear before the upload is complete. You may have to back out of the search and back in to get it to work, but chances are when you first see the album, the song titles will all be grayed out.  Once the update is complete, give it a minute and everything should become available to you.
    (13) Pick a track that wouldn't play before and watch to see if the timer starts to move, followed by music! It is now time to do a little happy dance.
I know this is a far cry from figuring out what it takes to get songs that should match to actually do so, but that's a whole different ball of wax.

Thanks this was useful. I have been ripping my audiobooks and I was finding that they would get uploaded to iCloud in the process, which in itself was fine, but then iTunes would not let me change the media type to Audiobook, which is annoying as it effects how iTunes treats the media. Like showing you the skip back 10 seconds button.
The general outline here helped me work around the issue and change the media type before the media was re-uploaded to iCloud.

  • "Updating movies so that they can play in Keynote"

I'm getting the following message on almost every presentation I open in the new Keynote:
Do you want to update the movies so that they can play in Keynote for Mac? You can also optimize all movies for playback on iOS.
Note: Optimization may affect video quality.
Any idea what video formats Keynote supports and why it's asking to covert all my embeded .mov files?  If I allow it to "optimize" my video files, what does it turn them into?

Yeah, same here.  Every presentation I've opened has had this issue.
I made copies of some files and let Keynote 6 do its thing with the movies.  I noticed two things:
    A.  The movies that did convert look worse.
    B.  About 25% of mine didn't convert and simply won't play in Keynote 6.
So yeah... thanks Apple, but no thanks.  I'll be going back to version '09, which thankfully is still on my drive and appears to run ok.
Very happy I didn't pay for these iWork "upgrades".  Such a bummer because I always look forward to iWork/iLife updates.

  • I've rented a movie, but it won't play on my computer. How can i fix this?

I rented "Django Unchained" and after getting through half of the movie, I cannot get it to start up again no matter what I click on. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

I burn a disc the same way I always have using the same brand of discs that I have always used
Describe both your usual disc-burning technique, as well as the brand of discs you're using (as well as whether they're +R or -R).
Are you burning with an internal SuperDrive, or an external burner?
If the disc won't play on your computer and "won't play on any other player either," that sounds like an overall bad disc, not just one that "won't play on my computer."

  • The movie i rented won't play

The movie I rented won't play, all it says is that Itunes is not available

Try closing the Videos app completely and see if it works when you re-open the app : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Videos app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Videos app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't fix it then try is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • I received an ipod touch 5th gen for Christmas.  The first songs i've downloaded and synced with my touch have created ghost songs.  They are only on my computer in itunes once but appear on my ipod twice, one copy that won't play.  I can't delete them

The first songs i've downloaded and synced with my new touch have created ghost songs.  They are only on my computer in itunes once but appear on my ipod twice, one copy that won't play.  I can't delete them.  I've tried unticking all the music that was on the ipod via itunes and re-syncing, which in theory should delete all music from my ipod.  It does except for the 5 ghost songs.   So at present I have no music on ipod except the 5 ghost songs.   Has anyone got any ideas how I can get rid of these?
I had no problems with my ipod touch 4th, which I had for years.   Any help would be great.

  • Songs that won't play

One song in a complete album that won't play, all others play, but this one says that it's not authorized to play on my computer and to enter password for apple id, which when done, says it is authorized to play on this computer and 2 others, but still won't play? What gives?

    Hello there, c_costa.
The following Knowledge Base article provides some great steps for troubleshooting issues for repeated prompts for authorization from iTunes:

Alternatively, if you are sure the same Apple ID purchased the content that's not playing, you can delete the song from your Mac and then download it again from your purchases:

  • I'm burning dvd's that won't play on a regular dvd player.  What am I doing wrong?  Are there some simple things to check to figure this out?  (Sorry, I know this has been asked many times)

I'm burning dvd's that won't play on a regular dvd player.  What am I doing wrong?  They play fine on computers but not on dvd players.  Are there some simple things to check to figure this out?  (Sorry, I know this has been asked many times).  Created in DVD studio pro.

    Hi
Just my thoughts to add to the excellent answers above.
    • BRAND of DVD used - Matters when doing Video-DVDs
Memorex, NoName etc cheap brands usually do NOT work
I only Use Verbatim (more organic dye in these)
    • Type of DVD - matters
    - DVD+/RW - usually results in problems
    - DL-DVDs are more problematic than SL-DVDs
    - DVD+R are a more modern sort - BUT PLAYS BADLY or not at all on older DVD-players
    I only use DVD-R
    • BURN SPEED - matters
    - Best in iDVD app - IS NOT BEST at all but results in lot's of Burn Errors = Doesn't play well or at all
I set this down to x2 or x4 max.
    Yours Bengt W

  • I rented an iTunes movie, but it won't play on my MacBook

I rented an iTunes movie, but it won't play on my MacBook. All software is updated and current.

Hi I had this problem and tried all the usual deauthorize and the mini player fixes but they did not work for me. What worked in the end was I reset the play count on the movie (right click on the movie under the rented section of your library). I have no idea why this worked but it did.
