They're in a new user account created by the Migration.  When you next log on, you should get a prompt to assign a password for the new account.

  • I used migration assistant to transfer files from my old compaq laptop to MBP but I have no idea where they are??

I used migration assistant to transfer files from my old compaq to Macbook pro but I don't know where to find all my pictures and music in the MBP. Where do they go?

I have now migrated my stuff again - I think the problem is that I clicked skip this user on previous attempts. Now I have 4 different users, one has my photos, one has my music and another has my documents as well as the one that is my usual one. I just need to figure out how to get the pics and music into the one I'm using day-to-day and I'll be sorted.

  • I'm trying to use migration assistant to transfer applications from my imac to macbook. Using either a firewire or network, as I'm waiting to select items to migrate, I receive an error message that "the application quit unexpectedly". My imac is newer.

I'm trying to use migration assistant to transfer applications from my newer imac to an older macbook (10.5.8).  I keep getting an error message "application quit unexpectedly" as I'm waiting to select the items to migrate.  I've tried using a firewire cable as well as just a network connection.
    Thank you.

    Here is some information:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889
It mentions that migration is not supported with 10.4; now you said you have 10.5 - it may be the same problem. Besides, migration assistant will recognize an older system and move apps etc. over to a newer system - I'm not sure it will do the same thing in reverse.
And, there are a couple more problems: one is that your newer versions may not be backwards compatible with the old 10.5 and the second is that is you are trying to copy apps so you can use them on both, it most likely violates the SLA (unless you purchased them on MAS).
So, if none of those two apply, I'd simply try target disk mode (without the assistant) and drag over the apps.

  • Using Migration Assistant to move files from old PC laptop to new MacBook Pro that has Windows 8 installed containing Outlook

When using Migration Assistant to move files from old PC laptop to new MacBook Pro, that has Windows 8 installed containing Outlook, will emails, contacts and calendar entries be moved to Outlook on the new MacBook or into Mail, Contacts and Calendar?

I doubt they will. But then I'm not sure as I used a migration program once about 18 years ago and totally FUBARed the system I had at that time and I've never used one again.
For me the reason to have a new system is to start fresh. Installing only program that I now use and manually copying data over from the older system.
Not sure your older version of Outlook, and the outlook mail boxes, are compatible with Office/Outlook for Mac 2011.
A better place to ask this question would be on the MS Office for Mac forums.
Hope it all works out for you.

  • HT204350 Can I use Migration Assistant to transfer data from macbook running 10.7.5 To a macbook air running Mavericks? On first attempt destination machine says that os versions are not compatible for Migration Assistant.

I am trying to transfer contents from old macbook running os 10.7.5 to a macbook air running os 10.9.1 using migration assistant but the destination macobook air says that migration cannot proceed (yellow triangle) because the os on the macbook is not up to date (assuming that eans 10.9.1).  However old macbook cannot be updated to 10.9.1.
Can anyone suggest a way around this please?

Try looking at this section in the Migration Assistant article.

  • Using Migration assistant to transfer data from one disk to another

I will install a new SSD disk but I would like to make a clean install with Mountain Lion but after that migrate data from the old HDD, that it is now installed in the place of the optical drive, to the new. I would like to know how to do that correctly and also if there is any advice to do this better.

I agree the best solution is to install clean then install programs then copy data over for a true new clean install.
But I still don't understand why you said setup assistant isn't a option either. It certainly is a option and in my opinion a much better option than migration assistant. Which is what the original poster was asking about.
As for cloning I have read it is best when going from standard drive to ssd it is best to do a new clean install instead of cloning. So I wouldn't consider cloning a option in this case. But that is my opinion from the reading I have done. I was thinking about installing a ssd in my mac notebook.
    Thanks.

The simplest or most efficient way is to clone the new SSD.  If the OP chooses to be selective about which data to retain, drag and drop is the simplest and most efficient.

  • Cannot access desktop to shoe files or folders since using migration assistant to transfer data from my old iMac to my new one.  What do I need to do to access the desktop?

    Cannot access desktop

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
