You need to set a password. So, do this:
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu. Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow instructions in the dialog window that will appear.

It is an old macbook pro probably 6yo with the back lit keys - not under applecare anymore obviously. I downloaded the upgrade last night which took quite a while longer than it should have.

Hello, I imported song from a CD onto my Macbook Pro and now I would like to transfer the songs onto my IPhone 5. I can't figure out how to do that, does anyone know how I would be able to do this?

When you set up a Smart Playlist, it automatically populates the list with songs. You don't have to do anything. Now, you may not have set it up properly, meaning your set up fails to recognize any songs.
If you just want to put music in a Playlist, just create one, give it a name. Then drag the music from the "music" list to the playlist. It copies the information there. And when you sync the Playlist to your iPhone, all the music goes.
It's truly easy, but there is a bit of a learning curve until you're good at it. Keep asking questions here, everyone will help you. But do read the Apple documents, they lay out pretty straightforward. -
I just attempted to update my apple iTunes to 11.1.4 which resulted in the msvcr80.dll error message. I followed all of the instructions to move the .dll's to the desktop, I removed iTunes via the control panel, and now I can't get past the Service 'Apple Mobile Divice failed to start. Verify that you have sufficent privilidges to start systems services. I now have no iTunes on my laptop, can't reinstall iTunes, and I am pulling my hair out because I can not figure out how to send an e-mail to Apple because I bought my iPad just over a year ago. PLEASE HELP!!!

i upgraded to IOS 7.0.2 on my ipad and now I can't get past the terms and conditions page to finish the setup. I click agree and then a small box appears to click agree again and I can't choose agree or disagree. I just need my ipad to work... help

I was in the middle of installing the new update using the wifi at a local restaurant when I lost the wifi signal and my iPhone shut down, and now I can't get into the phone. I only get the iTunes logo with the cable pic. What are my options now?
Your only option is to connect your iPhone to your computer via USB (as the diagram indicates) and restore using iTunes.

I have an iphone 5. It has a "no sim" in upper left corner. I removed it, placed it back, restored the phone and now I can't get past the "activation" part. It's telling me to insert a SIM w/out a PIN lock. HELP!!!!!

Please help. I recently bought my first Mac (a Macbook Pro 15-in Mid 2012) and my iPod classic will not work properly when I plug it into my computer and open the newest version of iTunes. It played just fine on my old PC with iTunes 10. I have not updated the software on the iPod since I bought it a few years ago and even if I wanted to update it I couldn't becuse once I plug it in it gets stuck saying "syncing with iTunes." Well, I have it manually set so that I can add/delete whenever I want. So I don;t understand why it is giving me this message and getting stuck. I've looked around the web and tried to install iTunes 10 but because I have the newest version already installed it will not let me replace it with 10.
Does anyone know how this can be resolved?
Thanks.Apple doesn't call its portable machines 'notebooks' instead of 'laptops' for nothing - using a MacBook Pro in your lap can cause some burns on your skin, poor ventilation, etc. So use it on a hard flat surface - not your lap, pillows, bedclothes, etc.
As for burning a hole in your screen, you'll have to revisit the Apple Store and see how much they would charge for a new screen. It's likely to be a bit expensive.
And if you've Safari set to re-open tabs when you restart, you can disable this feature -> Safari-Preferences-General.

I had to restore my Macbook Pro from Time Capsule yesterday and now when I go to log in as my usual Admin, it says there is a FileVault error and my access is denied. I created another temporary Admin acct, but everything I had on my desktop, etc is "gone" I can look up the "drive' or wahtever it's called, but I can't access any of it. In the Directory Utility window, click the lock icon and authenticate. Select the Directory Editor tool in the toolbar. Select Users from the Viewing menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Select the affected user account in the list. On the right is a list of properties and values. Select the property "HomeDirectory" and delete it by clicking the minus-sign icon directly below the property list. There are two such icons in the window. You want the one on the right, not the one on the left.
CAUTION: Do not click the minus-sign icon on the left, below the user list.
Then click the Save button in the lower right corner of the window. Quit Directory Utility.
CAUTION: There is no "undo" in Directory Utility. If you make a mistake and delete something in the Directory Editor that should not have been deleted, restore your whole system from a backup and start over. I have no other help to offer in that case.
Try again to log in as the affected user. If you can log in, you should find a file in the home folder with the name of the user and the filename extension "sparseimage" or "sparsebundle". Double-click that file. A disk image should open. Copy your files from that disk image to restore them.
I strongly suggest that you deactivate legacy FileVault in the Security & Privacy preference pane, then log out and log back in. Consider activating FileVault 2 if you want that kind of security.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above. -

I installed Libre Office on my Macbook Pro. It displays on my desktop the same as a USB would, offering me to eject "Libre Office". I am having trouble trying to get rid of it, as im not even sure I know how to uninstall stuff on here!
Please help meYou haven't installed it. You've just downloaded it to your computer. Double-click on the .dmg file to mount it like an external drive. Double-click on the disk icon, then drag the Libre Office file into your Applications folder.
You can then eject the disk icon after which you can delete the .dmg file.
Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications. Here is a selection:

I upgraded to 10.0.1 on my macbook pro and now I can only open a single window -- what happened?
Since upgrading to 10.0.1 I have not been able to open more than one window in firefox. If i have a window already open going to "open" does nothing. This is extremely frustrating. I'm using a macbook pro.
I remember this happening some time ago and the fix involved setting an option somewhere ...It's been so long since I bought my macbook pro in August of 2010, but I do remember the iwork disk that had pages, numbers, and keynote on it, but I can't find the disk in my closet. I did not realize that when I took my computer in to the genius bar to upgrade to Snow Leopard, and then to download Yosemite, that I would lose these applications. I had no reason to open pages when I emptied my hard drive to upgrade to Snow Leopard, so I don't know if I kept iwork when I upgraded to Snow Leopard at the Genius Bar. I had file vault on with my external drive on, and since removed it before the upgrade, but now all my documents are unable to open on my external drive. ****. So now the new problem is how do I undo file vault in a new OS 10.10 when encoded in 6.8? Can I take my external drive in to Genius Bar?
