HT3231 Migrate wireless from mac air (october 2008) to new  mac air

The wireless migrating from my old mac air to my new mac air stops after some time. It says that some ducuments cannot be copied.
What to do about it. And is that the reason for the stopping? Thanks in advance, AnneSophie

There's two things you should try first - even if they don't help, they won't hurt. Please start disk utility and repair the file system and then repair permissions on the old MBA.
Then, retry the migration. Does it still stop? Does it give you the name of the offending file? Please report back and we'll take it from there...

  • How do you migrate software from a dead PC to a new Mac

PC died. Bought iMac without DVD drive. How do I move Dreamweaver CS5.5 academic, Photoshop Elements, & Photoshop to the Mac?  Will I ever be able to find the answer on this obfuscated company website? Unlikely.

I don't know of any companies that would offer a platform swap on a program 4 versions removed from current. Adobe used to do it for "current version" software until the Creative Cloud delivery method did away the necessity for it (you can have it installed on both without issue)
Since you are a previous owner of the Creative Suite, you do qualify for a decent discount on the first year's subscription: Creative Cloud pricing and membership plans | Adobe Creative Cloud
Or you could just load Windows on your Mac and install it from your existing disks. Windows runs exceptionally well on the new Intel Macs from what I hear.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
That's the classic behaviour after using Migration Assistant and that's normal.
To transfer the data from the new user account to your old user account, you can follow some steps. Here is all the information you need to do this > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5472

I used the Migration Assistant to move data from my Time Machine to my new Mac.   Most data seems to have been transferred successfully but none of my iPhoto pictures have been transferred.
My Time Machine now shows the earliest available Back-up to be after the Migration Date.   My iPhoto pictures seem to have either been lost in the migration process or are locked in my Time Machine prior to the earliest back-up date now accessible.
Any advice on recovering my old iPhoto pictures would be greatly appreciated.

First go to iPhoto Preferences, look in both General and Advanced tabs to make sure that things are set to import from camera into iPhoto.
Then if that doesn't help, connect the camera and open Image Capture in your Applications > Utilities folder and see if you can use Image Capture to reset the import path from the camera to iPhoto.

  • HT4889 I just complete a migration from my Mac Book Pro to my new Mac Book Pro but none of the files on my desktop appear anywhere. Suggestions please.

I have just completed a lengthy migration of all  my files from an old Mac Book Pro to my new Mac Book Pro and I find that none of my files on my desktop have been transferred. So, I do not have the confidence that all my files have been transferred. What did I do wrong and what can I do to fix this matter. Sugggestions welcome. Thanks

Open the Users folder, drag the migrated home folder to the desktop, provide your administrator password, and retrieve the files from there. If desired, you can then use the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences to delete the migrated account. This can be done in reverse if you only want the migrated account.

I have tried Thunderbird to migrate all my Outlook mail, contacts and address information from Windows to Mac but it didn't work.  It didn't give me an 'sbd' extension even though it recreated allmy information in Thunderbird.  There was no way for me to export the information from my Windows PC to my new Mac.  Can anyone please help me.

O2M (Outlook2Mac) is the only migration app that I have ever found that works to migrate Outlook pc mail, contact, and calendar data to a Mac.   At $12.95 it's a steal.
It sounds like what you actually did was import your Outlook mail on your pc to Thunderbird on your pc.
Note 1: O2M runs on your pc.  It converts your Outlook files to a format that can be transferred to a Mac.  After you export your Outlook mail & contacts you still need to move (copy) them to your Mac and import them into whatever mail/contact application you are using on your Mac.
What mail/contact application are you planning to use on your Mac?
Do you need assistance with copying files from your pc to your Mac?
Note 2: .sbd files are Thunderbird files.  They are optional and are associated with Thunderbird mail subfolders.  They have no bearing on migration from a pc to a Mac.

  • Migration Assistant from PowerBook 10.3.9 to new MacBook Pro?

A friend has just bought a new MacBook Pro. His previous Mac is a PowerBook (G4 1.0 GHz 15" FW800 - Aluminium) still running Panther 10.3.9.
He's asked me to help him migrate his files, settings, apps etc. to the new Mac. I had thought to use Migration Assistant/Setup Assistant to do this, but the manual for the MacBook Pro says:
+"Before migrating, use Software Update on your other Mac. The other Mac should have one of these versions of Mac OS X software—either Mac OS X v10.4.11 or Mac OS X v10.5.6 (or later)."+
Does this mean you can't migrate from a Panther Mac to Snow Leopard using Migration Assistant?
    TIA,
    Chris Adams.

You use Migration Assistant from the new machine. The old machine needs to be started into Target Disk Mode. Both machines need to be first connected via Firewire cable. See the following:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking
will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)

Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft

If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • What is the best way to transfer my music library from my windows pc to my new macbook air?

what is the best way to transfer my large iTunes library from my windows pc to my new macbook air?  Not all purchased, many from CDs I owned

Moving a library: Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its sub-folders and files) intact to the other drive.  Hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) and open iTunes.  At the prompt to create or choose a library choose the copied iTunes folder.
If this is to a new computer and you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

  • Is there a way to migrate files from 10.4.11 to a new Macbook Pro?

I want to buy a new Macbook pro, and want to transfer important files from my old iBook G4.  The folks at our Apple Store tell me I cannot migrate data from 10.4.11 to the new operating system.  Is there any way to do it?

    Hello,
A new MacBook Pro may not allow the same applications to be installed (if they are PPC specific applications)
Other applications will be updated to the current release.
The easiest way for you to transfer your personal files (not applications) is to use a USB pen drive or USB external drive.
Copy all your content to the USB drive and then from your USB drive to your MacBook Pro.
There are other ways to do this without a USB drive.
If your on the same wireless network you could setup file share between the two Macs and then copy files from one to another. (I've done this between my MacBook Pro and PowerBook) then it would be a simple case of dragging files from your iBook to your MacBook Pro over the same network.
You could use a cross over Ethernet cable and run a cable between the two macs.
Your new MacBook Pro may need an thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter to do that.
USB Drive would be easier and they don't cost a lot.
    Best of luck

Now my question is how do I transfer the iTunes folder.  I have authorised the new macair for iTunes and am within the 5 computer limit.

  • How do I move all files from an old PPC to a new Mac Mini?

How do I move all files from an old PPC to a new Mac Mini?

The new mini has a Firewire 800 port. Likely the PPC version only has Firewire 400.  The OP will need a converter cable which is why I was asking first about what hardware is available and how much is being copied.
Probably go with using the external hard drive if you decide all you want are data files.
